Shane Gould is so underrated. At these Olympics she won medals in five individual events (3 gold) and she held every freestyle world record from 100 metres to 1500 as well as 200m IM and she was only fifteen years old.
She's not overrated by me. The greatest female swimmer of the 20th century - probably of both the 20th and 21st century. Had the absolute privilege of meeting her quite by accident and she was gracious and charming and it was one of those occasions that disproved the maxim "never meet your heroes." Simply the greatest.
@jamesnickoloff6692 yes. You're right! I could go back in and edit correctly, but then your comment would make no sense, so I'll leave it. But yes - I meant "under rated" - and yes, I am an Aussie.
Shane Gould held all freestyle world records ie 100,200,400,800,1500 concurrently an incredible feat that will surely never happen again- all without goggles!
The 1972 Olympics are the first I remember and I remember Shane doing so well for Australia. Amazing stroke with 2 beat kick for the majority of the race. A steady build to maintain and then increase her lead. Unlike Ian Thorpe who blew opponents away when his kick kicked in at the 300 to 400 metre part of the race. For a 16 year old she must have had amazing upper body strength.
I remember being in awe of Shane (and Mark Spitz) at the '72 Olympics. Watching this again, I remember why - she was a bloody machine. Not unlike Ledecky - 2 beat kick, all upper body, and ruthless. Ledecky glides more with her left arm, while Shane is more rhythmic with her high stroke rating ... but both of them are relentless.
I transferred 16mm film for Harry of Dawn from film to video 25 years ago. Stuff that has never been seen. Harry's private videos from Melbourne 56 and Rome 60. Wish I had kept a copy for myself.
I don't know if you heard the story about Mark Spitz's comeback in '92? He was offered a lot of money to qualify for the 100 'fly. He trained with a squad in LA. After one hard session he was asked by a twenty year old how he felt. Mark replied "I feel like sh$t" The young guy turned and shouted to the rest of the squad. "Hey, guess what? The great Mark feels just like we do!" I think that is so funny.
Yes, it's amazing to see Shane Gould swim the 400 in 4:19.04 in 1972 (and with such strength). Only 8 years before, this event was won in 4:43.3 by Ginny Duenkel. Equally astounding: only sixteen years after Gould's performance, Janet Evans won the event in 4:03.85--a 40-second drop in 24 years! Fantastic progression by women.
Watching this makes me wonder how she would have done against the East Germans in 1976. She was dominant in 72, but in 76 she would have been competing against the roided up swimmers like Ender and Thumer.
Yes - typical Australian swimming officials at the time. Little Hitlers who routinely harassed our best swimmers out of the sport. Also - Forbes and Ursula Carlisle tended to heavily overtrain their swimmers. They had a lot of success, but their swimmers - the girls especially - tended to retire early. Between Forbes's spartan training regimes and Australia's stupid swimming officialdom of the time, Shane was literally burnt out of the sport.
@@Fuzcapp Forbes invented interval training. That's what did it. That's an illegal start now BTW. She certainly does not get true credit for her feats.
She was big poo back then. It was like, " You drive through Balgowlah, turn left on the Punchbowl Road, heading for Chatswood, and you pass the Narrabeen Swimming Pools, and Shane Gould trains there.". That was what it was like.

Wow - Shane in lane 2 and Babashoff in lane 8!!! A bit of foxing going on in the heats!
The best of all time (no need of doping)

If Ledecky learnt to actually use her legs she probably would go faster. May be a bit late for her to do so. Still, she has just changed coaches.

At a time when female swimmers were barely breaking the minute for 100m, Shane swam the first 100 of this 400, in 61 second!

Evans is another legend. 🙂
She was a spectacular swimmer who could see the writing on the wall...
Happy birthday 65 today 🍿🎉🎈🥳🎁💖👏🇦🇺
Amazing
Stephanie Rice could have swum this as a medley and still come in 6th!
Daylight! Daylight between 1 st and the rest
Where's the commentary not this poxy music. How hard could it be?????
I can't think of a soundtrack that would feel more displaced for this footage, as this one...
Hear, hear!
What’s with the music???
I will wear yellow ( gold) anytime of the week, every day, at any minute
Mozart concerto?

Did she retire at 17 years old ?

@@groberts2618 I used to swim with a Graham Roberts .... ?????
@@Fuzcapp No. I was with Harry Gallagher on the Northern Beaches.
@@Fuzcapp RIP Harry. He passed away earlier this year. Three times Olympic coach, Dawn's first coach.
Better lane guards would have chopped off a minute
Goggles would've chopped 30 seconds off it as well!

Seriously?? Have you ever been to Sydney? She trained at Ryde pool anyway.
first
Bloody crap music, just wanted to watch and "Listen" to the race. 👎
Maybe in homage to Lorraine Crapp - the previous Australian swimming legend who also held every freestyle world record concurrently.
awful music.........
Why this awful music? Commentary would be much better.
