    It was later revealed that the entire 1988 final line up except for the lone Brazilian were on PEDs including Carl Lewis. Ben Jonhson was made the escape goat.

    My opinion, the USA had a problem seeing their golden boy, Carl Lewis lose. Ben Johnson was not the only guy or girl on drugs. Ben ran a 9.79 in the finals, that was a shocking time then, and a time now that is better than all modern sprinters, except Bolt, Powell, Blake and Tyson Gaye.

    I remember like it was yesterday, and the unbelievable build up and tension. Ben Johnson’s final win was for me the greatest eye boggling sprint I’d ever seen up until Usain Bolts lightning win in Beijing 2008.

      @@juckimal You missed the point, my eyes were boggled and the mind was blown - that doesn’t change, regardless. I didn’t know he was a cheater until the Stanazalol bombshell hit a few days later. I was absolutely disgusted and embarrassed. It was an eye opener and ruined my trust in all athletes. I even stopped going to the gym for 2 years. In 1988 only few people knew about the slimey world of PEDs until the Johnson story broke. Youngsters like myself at the time looked up to Jamaican ex- pats like Johnson to boost image and smash baseless stereotypes. The man broke the hearts and goodwill of believers.

      @@Pulsonar More than 80% of top athletes today are on some form of PED's. The temptation is there, the science is always keeping up with it, and there is simply too much money for all parties involved. Most organizations even permit some level of it because they know these athletes are the most entertaining. It is naive to think that athletes today have "evolved" or worked on better techniques. Especially when men are producing 33% less testosterone in their systems naturally than they did two generations ago, and are 2.5" shorter on average. They are all on more advanced forms of juice.

    And here in the UK, Linford Christie is still seen as one of the best -if not the best - sprinter, and he was doped up here in '88 and throughout his career. question marks over Carl Lewis too.... the difference in this era is between those sprinters who were caught.... and those whose reputations escaped free from doping.

    Watching these races, sprint mechanics have come a long way. Ben's technique was sound and transferable to this era though and Carl has always had the so photogenic prototype style.

      I remember this race very well. I sat with family and friends who watched it with great anticipation. Ben Johnson was subsequently disqualified for taking the banned steroid stanozolol. His name lives in infamy like other drugs cheats who were caught.

    that second false start was not a false start. Under 0.25 speed, you cannot tell anyone broke prior to the gun. That was an error by the officials.

    I met Ben at the theater in Scarborough. He was on a date with a tall blond. I had to go up to him. Je was so nice. I could tell he was apprehensive at first because hes probably still going through hell from IGNORANT and ride people. I had a tear in my eye because of that. I had a big smile and shook his hand and told him how amazing he is!!! He lit up like a Christmas tree and thanked me. It was a great and spontaneous moment.

      I had a similar experience twice he was not well recieved at a bar in Sudbury...I had to go tell him I thought he was the best...made his day and mine...then 5 or 6 years later in Jamaica he was at at the resort bar I was staying at...he recalled my kindness amongst the hostile crowd in Sudbury. He's a good soul.

    It’s crazy how in 34 years the 100 meter record has gone down only .21 seconds. Ben was the greatest. This is the most historic 100 meter sprint race and one of my favourites to watch

    Desai Williams in that first race would've had the fastest 40yd dash time in that race yet he finished 4th. I reference this for football fans who think the runners with the fastest 40 times are the actual fastest on the field all the time

      You never run 100m in a straight line in football. And it's no good having a slow start then gliding through at 60m like Lewis does, because in football that slow start will have got you tackled within 2 seconds.

But guys like jerry rice who had a terrible 40 time would find ways to wrong foot dbs which bought him enough time to build momentum and speed and once he did that he often ran away from DBs(who probably had better 40 times) for 60+ yard tds. Sparky is right having a fast 40 doesnt always mean you're the fastest on the field.

La totalité des sprinters de cette course étaient dopés, mais seuls ceux qui faisaient de l'ombre aux athlètes de l'oncle Sam sont tombés ! Lorsqu'on a retiré le monopole de ces instances de lutte anti-dopoge aux Américains, de nombreuses icônes made in USA sont tombés (Denis Mitchell, Marion Jones... , aussi dans le cyclisme L. Armstrong, G Hincapie, T Hamilton... ) mais pas toutes ! En effet, un certain André Agassi a reconnu dans son autobiographie s'être fait contrôler positivement (en 1997 je crois me souvenir... ) sans être sanctionné officiellement, aussi nous savons que Carl Lewis fût contrôlé positivement lors de cette course, à d'autres courses aussi et sans être rattrapé par la patrouille !
