Macklemore has struggled with sobriety, had a relapse a few years ago, wrote about it. Very involved in the recovery movement. Now you have to checkout the song "Kevin" he does with Leon Bridges. Perfect follow up and Leon Bridges' voice will break your heart in the most beautiful way. Love to the Third Fam. 💙
Mackelmore is in recovery, living a sober life. im an addict in recovery and he's huge in our community. headline a sober festival here in Massachusetts. his music is always storytelling its not just fun poppy stuff. he has a lot talking about his addiction, and his sobriety and relapses
You gotta do more Macklemore bro! Dudes slept on because of Thrift Shop, and it's a damn shame. Do a whole reaction to The Heist! (His best album and a masterpiece)
Macklemore is the most underrated storyteller. He is so good! Been a huge fan for years, thank you for reacting to him...you should def do more Macklemore
I remember watching this when it came on. From wikipedia...On 14 May 2016, Macklemore appeared in Barack Obama's weekly address to talk about the dangers of addiction to opioids and prescription painkillers. Macklemore talked about his own experiences with abuse of painkillers, stating "When you're going through it, it's hard to imagine anything being worse than addiction. But the shame and stigma associated with the disease keeps too many people from seeking the help they actually need. Addiction isn't a personal choice or a personal failure
I realized this is his story when I saw him live a few years ago and he changed the lyrics to reflect his experience instead of saying 3 friends he went to watching 4 friends die just hearing the sudden change sent chills down my spine
We need more Mack! From this serious stuff, to his wild fun tracks. I think he is a great artist with a broad variety of tracks and messages. I couldn't think of a better reactor to understand Mack and give him the time he deserves.
Very powerful storytelling ...enjoyed that thanku an such an amazing reaction ..Rip to.lost loved ones to addictions ..thanku much love and god bless x
Macklemore is severely underrated due to what people hear on the radio. He’s a true artist. I really hope you do more! Drug Dealer Bolo Tie Buckshot Let’s Eat Growing Up(Sloans Song) Ten Thousand Hours Gold Wing$ My Oh My Willy Wonka The Town Intentions
Please do more Macklemore man, I really recommend Drug Dealer, Neon Cathedral, Light Tunnels, Wings, Same Love and White Privileges. He has great messages and storytelling
By far my favorite Macklemore song right here. Got me through some tough times for sure. It is funny when people who have only heard his album releases listen to his mixtape songs becuase they're such a completely different vibe Also the guy singing in the Chorus isn't Ryan Lewis. The singers name is Fences. Ryan Lewis is Macklemore's personal DJ/Producer/Beatmaker etc. But yes Macklemore is very open about his addiciton. He's got a lot of songs about how much of a struggle it's been in his life and how many times he's relapsed
Macklemore is super dope. Drug Dealer and Kevin are great songs related to this subject. Light Tunnels is amazingly introspective with a different topic. Hope to see more!
Definitely had to check out his Drug Dealer song...its amazing. He does & says so much for the recovery community. I'm in recovery & artist like him& Eminems music literally saves alot of us. The water I think represents drowning...in active addiction that's what it's like just barely keeping yourself afloat
What happened at the grammys really affected his career. I hope hiphop gave him more respect, so people can still listen to him without remembering what happened at the grammys before. Or idk.
Yo I love how you realize what potential other people can hold and help relay their expressions. What caught me off guard was you saying you’re going to take a look at the “Otherside” don’t know if you meant to but that was 🔥
I’m at day 516 of being sober and it’s still a battle. Some days are way easier than others, but it’s not something you just wake and forget one day. To anybody struggling, or still struggling, just slow down and take things one hour at a time instead of the “one day at a time” way. At times I had to go one minute at a time. Stay strong and keep moving forward. It does get easier, but it will never disappear.
If you've only heard his radio songs, you seriously need to check out his non radio songs. From "The Heist" i would recommend Wings and Neon Cathedral. And most of Macklemore's songs are storytelling.
Great Commentary Reaction. 🔥💯So hard when we go to addictions, unconsciously, with the purpose of numbing the pain while so much of that pain is/was created by, or unaddressed through the addictions (like false solutions) themselves. Their compelling power to paralyze movement beyond the confines of myself, while proposing excuses/feelings of co-dependence to continue joined with the problem, is underestimated. Bet something like 99/100 times it's underestimated until it has been encountered.
SUPER refreshing to see someone react to macklemore!! i love him, but i always have to give a disclaimer when i talk about how i like him like "i know so cringey" type of deal, but he actually has a LOT of songs that show of the lyricism that he's capable of. unfortunately the radio has mostly only played his lighthearted stuff. you caught a lot that most wouldn't, and i am excited to check out the rest of your videos now! i would really recommend "wings", "over it ft donna missal" (the green room room sessions version ((omg donna is unreal in this)), "neon cathedral", "white privilege ii" (very shocked more people haven't reacted to this), and "starting over"
This is a remix with fences. (The guy in the video). That wasn’t Ryan Lewis. The original uses the red hot chilli peppers song otherside as the sample. I do like both versions. You should really check out “Life is Cinema”, Same Love”, “Glorious” - radio song but cool video and “Wings” - that one might piss you off. Lol
I always thought that reactions are low tier content on RUclips. After I watched and listened to you I realize that it was well spended 14 mins of my life and there might be great content everywhere. You pointed every thought perfectly. I Appreciate that, sub!
This is a video I'm going to show my kids when they're older. I have 11 year old twin boys, and they're really good kids, but I don't fool myself about what they're going to run across in their lives. I'm an ex-addict myself, and I think when they come to me when they're older about this shit, this will be a good lesson. I had a friend die myself, not from overdose but from being in the wrong place at the wrong time because of drugs, and I want my kids to have all the information they can possibly have about it. That's one thing alot of us didn't have growing up in the 80's with mothers that had never done any kind of drugs. Southern Baptist parents in Mississippi back then were very naive, and we got away with alot of shit back then. It's a new world now, we have so much more information that really needs to be shared.
If you also listen to some of his album from 2005 the language of my world you’ll hear him touch on his addiction/ dependency to drugs and alcohol before he ever went to rehab/ got clean
One day I'm gonna start getting on patreon but hopefully you see this, but macklemore is absolutely one of the artists that helped me through some tough times. He is definitely worth the listen my man 💪
Man shout out to whoever requested this! People look at me crazy when I say maclemores dope. He only made radio songs to get on the radio he has a ton of real shit!
Yeah, I remember being surprised by hearing his Heist album to find some decent tracks on it, and despite the controversy of the awards to it and everything.
Yeah he struggles with addictions. His tracks like this are more like spoken word or poetry and less like a full on rap song. I know that’s a difference without distinction, but it makes sense to me 😂
Dude I will pay you any amount of dollars to listen to more of Macklemore. Especially the powerful songs. He is in that, 21 pilot, NF vibe. But he's got this vibe to him that hits in a different way. He's amazing
Bro. Macklemore has tons of other songs like this. You should definitely look more into his discography. Starting over, drug dealer, neon cathedral, wing$ and plenty more. Give those a listen.
Ernest, Macklemore has a lot of deeper songs. There are of course the fun Thrift Shops but also so.e that really make you think. Wednesday Morning is for some reason the first one that comes to me.
So im a former addict from washington (aberdeen specifically) and most of Macklemore's music is what helped me through it. He is a former addict and most of his older music walks through his struggle with it. If your looking for another song, i highly recommend checking out Hold Your Head Up, its from his first album and the metaphor's are amazing!
“Kevin” is another great song to react to where he talks about drug use. Macklemore has a lot pf songs about drug use since he himself struggled with addiction, and even relapsing. He for sure gets slept on because of thrift shop. Glad you enjoyed the request!
Honestly, macklemore seems to get clowned a lot. And like, fair enough, and there's a good amount of stuff he's done I haven't liked at all. But he definitely has some solid stuff, and I vibe to a decent amount of what he's done, especially the more serious stuff
Did you name the video wrong? Because if I'm not mistakened, this songs name is "Otherside" (you should of done the original one with the red hot chili peppers instrumental instead of the fences remix) (regardless, still good)
The way I see him in the boat in the water is a sign of him going from one side to the "Otherside". From being sober to addicted to hitting the edge and getting sober again. If that makes sense.
How did I miss this reaction? I think that second verse is the most powerful verse on addiction I ever heard. I have tried to get into other Macklemore but it's just not for me but this song and his song drug dealer are amazing. I love when a artist makes a song about addiction being a addict myself it's comforting Knowing your not alone in this never ending war.
Can’t believe you just reacted to mac, this song is supposed to be semi biographical although it is also for his best friend that died from od on lean. Mac in my opinion has a very different side to the one who passes on the radio I don’t believe this is the original song though
The original album was great, two songs were changed that i still have to look up, just because the features were changed. Both were great in their own right.
You are right. The original samples "Otherside" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Hence the title and the line "This is not Californication," which is a reference to another one of their songs. I always preferred the original version myself.
Addiction is crazy. It takes control over who you are..Anyone can become an addict..I always prided myself on never having any addiction..never drank or smoked or did drugs..2017 ended up with chronic pain(long story)..when you have pain all the time and your life changes over night and you take pills and for a short period of time you feel happiness...I can't explain it🥺 anyone can become addicted..I had no issues with drugs till I was almost 40..your brain changes..Macklemore is actually really talented and his songs that were popular were upbeat but nothing wrong with that lol..sometimes we need that kind of music to take you away from the constant sadness and whenever I listen to the song Downtown by him(I think thats the name)me and my kids just act goofy for that 5 min lol
Macklemores "Wings" is goosebumps everytime
My Oh My gives me goosebumps too.

Macklemore has struggled with sobriety, had a relapse a few years ago, wrote about it. Very involved in the recovery movement. Now you have to checkout the song "Kevin" he does with Leon Bridges. Starting Over is like a sequel to this song, so I'd recommend checking that one out
Such an amazing song!

This song saved my life, along with Starting Over ... I’ll always thank Macklemore for making this thank you for reacting to this
I realized this is his story when I saw him live a few years ago and he changed the lyrics to reflect his experience instead of saying 3 friends he went to watching 4 friends die just hearing the sudden change sent chills down my spine
Macklemore is one of my favorite artists. So many amazing songs. I’m so happy you’re reacting to him

Really ought to check out "Other side" and "Starting Over" very great tracks with a powerful message
Lol this is otherside - hadn't even gotten to the reaction haha - but starting over is the next you must listen to!
Yeah, i miss the original otherside... i don't like this mix. But then...

"Neon Cathedral" is another Macklemore song that just gives chills, man. SO good. And it hits similar themes.
Very powerful storytelling ...enjoyed that thanku an such an amazing reaction ..Rip to.lost loved ones to addictions ..thanku much love and god bless x
Dude love your openness to new things. He does have some great tracks. Love your channel since the first day I found it.
So glad you finally checked this song out! Def recommend starting over next.
He's amazing. He's very honest in his music. His songs about addiction, rehab, and his relapses. He gives the actual dates of his relapses
Macklemore is severely underrated due to what people hear on the radio. He’s a true artist. I really hope you do more!

I can't actually believe this reaction is happening.
Ice always loved your channel. But this is a new level
I loved Macklemore in college!! Loved the reaction.
By far my favorite Macklemore song right here. Got me through some tough times for sure. It is funny when people who have only heard his album releases listen to his mixtape songs becuase they're such a completely different vibe

But yes Macklemore is very open about his addiciton. He's got a lot of songs about how much of a struggle it's been in his life and how many times he's relapsed
Somebody made a mashup of this song and the chili peppers "Otherside" it's absolutely insane
That was his original song, this is a remix
Macklemore is super dope. Drug Dealer and Kevin are great songs related to this subject. Light Tunnels is amazingly introspective with a different topic. Hope to see more!
Macklemore is a very underrated artist imo some of my favorites that you should listen to are neon cathedrals, Kevin and drug dealer

ı have seen ur reactions bro , after this I clicked subscribe button!
mackleMORE!
Macklemore was an addict. If I’m not mistaken this song was about him. You should do more from him.
Is an addict* even in sobriety you'll be an addict till the day you die.
What happened at the grammys really affected his career. I hope hiphop gave him more respect, so people can still listen to him without remembering what happened at the grammys before. Or idk.
Wow, I’ve never thought I would see a review on this song, it’s deep. I absolutely love your channel.
Yo I love how you realize what potential other people can hold and help relay their expressions. What caught me off guard was you saying you’re going to take a look at the “Otherside” don’t know if you meant to but that was 🔥
Starting over would explain a lot about him/a great reaction!!
The Heist, Bro! Whole album is awesome
I’m at day 516 of being sober and it’s still a battle. Some days are way easier than others, but it’s not something you just wake and forget one day. Starting Over is basically this song’s sequel
The battle of my life 😞 Off all opiates and down to 38mg Valium on my benzos hopefully just 31 more weeks 🙏💓
Much love peeps ✌
This song totally described me right down to the parents basement...10 years ago, please forgive yourself and know you are worthy of love 💘
The depth of your reactions are impeccable. Great video sir 👍
Bro you channel is so underrated, keep grinding🖤🤟🏽
You should really dive into his catalog...I think you'd be surprised, as you were with this song! Macklemore is pretty dope
Being from Washington I have been a fan for a while, he has some really deep tracks. He's also making golf gear now.
I know that he got some help but I'm not sure what demon he fought.
you HAVE to do Starting Over, it follows & talks about this song
Neon cathedral is another badass track! Some bars you'll like too!
Mack's earlier work had me enthralled. One of my favorite lesser known songs of his is "The Town" Sabzi remix.
Damn you need to do more Macklemore !!! 💥💥

Sooooo glad you reacted to the remix! Great tune. Most people can relate.
Hes got a couple fun songs but a lot of it is stuff like this. He has multiple songs going deep into his personal addiction

Hey I’m glad this song was picked. This was my favorite song back in the day. It’s still good and still gets me!

Starting over, neon cathedral, Kevin, drug dealer, and shadows are great songs to listen to after this, all go into his addiction a little deeper
If you also listen to some of his album from 2005 the language of my world you’ll hear him touch on his addiction/ dependency to drugs and alcohol before he ever went to rehab/ got clean
Yessirrr Macklemore representing the PNW as a fellow Washingtonian
One day I'm gonna start getting on patreon but hopefully you see this, but macklemore is absolutely one of the artists that helped me through some tough times. He is definitely worth the listen my man 💪
You gotta do macklemore wings great great song.
this is a good one
Sorry, second comment. The last "concert" version I heard of this song, he says he's watched 4 people die, because he lost another friend.
:/ damn ❤
When I saw him live in 2017 it was up to 7 lives
Neon Cathedral next! Please!
I’ve never really been a Macklemore fan but this has me wanting to give it another try. 🤔 it’s been years since I gave it a genuine listen.
100% should 🤗🤗 the majority of his songs lean closer to this!
Man shout out to whoever requested this! People look at me crazy when I say maclemores dope. He only made radio songs to get on the radio he has a ton of real shit!
New video? I'm hyped. Let's gooo
Yeah, I remember being surprised by hearing his Heist album to find some decent tracks on it, and despite the controversy of the awards to it and everything.
YESSSSS MACKLEMORE
Yeah he struggles with addictions. His tracks like this are more like spoken word or poetry and less like a full on rap song. I know that’s a difference without distinction, but it makes sense to me 😂
If I'm not mistaken, this is semi autobiographical
Dude I will pay you any amount of dollars to listen to more of Macklemore. Especially the powerful songs. He is in that, 21 pilot, NF vibe. But he's got this vibe to him that hits in a different way. He's amazing
Bro. Macklemore has tons of other songs like this. You should definitely look more into his discography. Starting over, drug dealer, neon cathedral, wing$ and plenty more. Give those a listen.
favorite macklemore song of all time
Kevin is a great song for you to react to, Ernest. Macklemore has some great stuff
Do Macklemore "FALLIN" if you want more deep songs by him.
Great reaction channel! 🔥✌🏼
If I remember correctly he wrote the original version of this song while living in his parent's basement while trying to get sober
Ernest, Macklemore has a lot of deeper songs. There are of course the fun Thrift Shops but also so.e that really make you think. Wednesday Morning is for some reason the first one that comes to me.
His words are his truth. Macklemore risked a lot to put this all out there. Hoping recovery stays with Macklemore
Check out Neon Cathedral by Macklemore.
There is also the symbolism of water in many cultures being a transition between life and death aka the Otherside.
Because if I'm not mistakened, this songs name is "Otherside" (you should of done the original one with the red hot chili peppers instrumental instead of the fences remix) (regardless, still good)
The beat matches the delivery better on the original version as well
I love RHCP but I do prefer this version over the other any day.
Like your reactions!!
Oh hell yesss we on macklemore!! I love all his music, but the Heist album especially! React to Neon Cathedral!!!
Mac in my opinion has a very different side to the one who passes on the radio
I don’t believe this is the original song though
The original album was great, two songs were changed that i still have to look up, just because the features were changed. Both were great in their own right.
You are right. The original samples "Otherside" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Hence the title and the line "This is not Californication," which is a reference to another one of their songs. I always preferred the original version myself.
You should definetely react to White Priviliges 2, one of his best songs with a deep meaning.
right!! so shocked there aren't more reactions to this song, considering everything!
Aww I was waiting for that RHCP sample to kick in. Didn't realise there was a different version :(
Addiction is crazy.
Mack has struggled for a long time. Been clean, fallen away, come back. He knows he will always struggle.
The version with the Red Hot Chili Peppers beat hits different.
Macklemore is a recovering addict as am I so yeah this song hits
I second everybody saying Starting Over but Neon Catherdral is also in the same ball park and probably my favorite
we need more macklemore here
Chemical dependancy isnt really a thing with weed but its so easy to become codependant on it and used for a coping mechanism
10/10 check out the original non music video version of this song as well as Neon cathedral for another deep song.
Neon Cathedral is also a deep song about addiction by Macklemore thats super dope man
