The historic occasion of the first state visit to the United Kingdom by the President of Ireland culminated in a special evening of music, spoken word and dance at the Royal Albert Hall.
President Michael D Higgins’ four day visit, hosted by Queen Elizabeth II, has been hailed as a huge success, with both heads of state celebrating Anglo-Irish links, the contributions to UK culture made by Irish communities and the political progress between the two states.
Members of these Irish communities and representatives of both states filled the Hall on 10 April 2014 for Ceiliúradh (Celebration), to continue the celebrations with a host of artists and musicians both Irish and of Irish descent.
Backed by a house band, special guests including Paul Brady, The Gloaming, Fiona Shaw,Elvis Costello,Imelda May and John Sheahan took to the stage to showcase the best of Irish culture and talent. A memorable moment came when Oscar-winning songwriter Glen Hansard led the guest vocalists and the 5,000 packed into the Hall in The Auld Triangle, a song made popular by The Dubliners which has become something of a modern Irish anthem, with Villagers vocalist Conor O'Brien adapting the lyrics of his verse to mark the occasion: “On a fine spring evening / we all lay dreaming / of a future gleaming / in the Royal Albert Hall”.
    (royalalberthall.com)
    A hungry feeling
    Came o'er me stealing
    And the mice were squealing
    In my prison cell
And that auld triangle went jingle-jangle
All along the banks of the Royal Canal
    To begin the morning
    The screw was bawling
"Get up ya loser and clean up your cell!"
And that auld triangle went jingle-jangle
All along the banks of the Royal Canal
    Now the screw was peeping
    As the lag lay sleeping
    Dreaming about his girl Sal
And that auld triangle went jingle-jangle
All along the banks of the Royal Canal
    Oh! the wind was rising
    And the day declining
    As a lady, I'm praying
    In my prison cell
And that auld triangle went jingle-jangle
All along the banks of the Royal Canal
    In the female prison
    There are 75 women
And among them now, I wish I did dwell
Then that auld triangle could go jingle-jangle
All along the banks of the Royal Canal

Some were... others seemed offended by the Irish singing a song about British abuse in Albert Hall... people oft forget the abuse that the Irish suffered, evening in decades not so long forgotten.

Mom's mother was from Dungannon and my father ( RIP ) was from Dumbarton Scotland. Yes I'm a Yank but f..... all if I don't feel my Celtic blood bubbling up when I listen to this song!
Mom died a week or so later. This song is so so special to me. Dec 8th will be four years.

EVERYTHING about this video makes me proud to be Irish - the instruments, the vocals, the crowd - UNTIL the end where they all look to the 'aristocracy' for approval. Sad..but unfortunately a reflection of our history in Ireland - and out present with the 'elite'. Enjoy with your own eyes and ears - forget the rest

I found out about this song from Inside Llewin Davis, and there’s something so beautifully chaotic about this performance, compared to the controlled and precise acapella from the movie.

Learning this version at the moment and wrote up the full lyrics. Thought I'd post them here:
    A hungry feeling
    Come o’er me stealing
    And the mice were squealing
    In my prison cell
    And the auld triangle
    Went jingle-jangle
    All along the banks
    Of the Royal Canal
    To begin the morning
    The screws were balling
Get up! Get up! Ya’ bausey
    And clean up your cell
    And the auld triangle
    Went jingle-jangle
    All along the banks
    Of the Royal Canal
    The wind was sighing
    As the day was dying
    As I lay crying
    In my prison cell
    And the auld triangle
    Went jingle-jangle
    All along the banks
    Of the Royal Canal
    On a fine Spring morning
    As the light were a’dreaming
    And the seagulls were a’squealing
    All above the prison walls
    And the auld triangle
    Went jingle-jangle
    All along the banks
    Of the Royal Canal
    Oh the screw was peeping
    And the lag was sleeping
    As I lay there weeping
    For my girl Sal
    And the auld triangle
    Went jingle-jangle
    All along the banks
    Of the Royal Canal
    I wish to Jesus
    They’d raise me wages
    From thirty shillings
    To two pounds ten
    And the auld triangle
    Went jingle-jangle
    All along the banks
    Of the Royal Canal
    In the female prison
    There are seventy-five women
    And it is with them
That I wish I did well
    And the auld triangle
    Went jingle-jangle
    All along the banks
    Of the Royal Canal
    On a fine Spring evening
    We all lay dreaming
    Of a future gleaming
    In the Royal Albert Hall
    And the auld triangle
    Went jingle-jangle
    All along the banks
    Of the Royal Canal
    And the auld triangle
    Went jingle-jangle
    All along the banks
    Of the Royal Canal (x2)

@@firetv2169 Yes indeed it was Kathleen Behan's brother Peadar Kearney the wrote the National anthem and Dominc was a great song writer including McAlpines Fusilers and Take it down from the mast which are 2 of my favourites. He also wrote one of my favourite plays Teems of Times which gives a real insight into their young lives in Russell Street.
