I am hispanic(Mexico, Spain) on both sides, but when i hear Irish traditional music, my soul attunes with it, in a way i cant explain, i feel longing for something or somewhere else, and a "sweet" sadness, yet, a certain peace. I dont understand it but thats okay. I dont need to understand, just to live, and enjoy it. I was a celt in a previous life, i swear, and if not, god gave me the heart of one for some reason. Please ireland, persevere, for your people are a jewel in the crown of mankind. The beauty of your music speaks to the content of your hearts, and souls. Persevere, so our world can continue to endure what we must, with at least some measure of comfort, that your magical music provides. Long live the Irish people, to the end of the earth!
Maybe your roots are Galician,," the land of the witches" , and if so you have a deeper connection to us than most will ever have,, for the celts exist in 7 nations, and Galicia Spain embraces better than most.
well said my compadre!! I feel the same as an american with irish roots.
Massive respect for this comment. Every Irish person will agree too. Legend ❤
Wow! You make me feel proud Huskie!
Beautiful written!
On a quiet street where old ghosts meet, I see her walking by ! Love this line so much
It's memorable x
I'm from Newfoundland Canada... 56 years old... thanks to both of my parents, my first love of music was Irish and Celtic Music. I'm now living in Ontario and I'm homesick for Newfoundland... I'm constantly playing Irish music... there's something about it that really hits your heart ❤️
I know exactly what you mean. I really just discovered it about 5 years ago. For me, the songs really hit home because they are real. No glamour. No over the top poetry or prose. Just simple stories set to music that conveys the emotion of what is being felt. Have you ever heard of Derina Harvey Band? She has a fantastic voice and the energy of the band. I’m learning Northern lights.
You can take the man out of Ireland, but you'll never take Ireland out of the man (woman too naturally). Ireland will always be there to welcome you back - temporarily, or if you choose, permanently.
@CitizenIreland I just gave it a listen. Great music. I love the bodhran solo. Thanks for the referral. I really need to take out mine out and learn it.
73 years old and left Cork when i was 10, I am as Irish now as I was then and the music is a root that I don't want to lose, nor ever will. We were in Nova Scotia a few years back and the experience for myself and my wife, who is Scottish, was indescribable. There is a link that I will never lose but I find very hard to define.
Because originally Newfoundland was inhabited by Irish. There’s a strong chance you have that Irish blood 💪🏻🇮🇪
I am a Czech but i must have been an Irish in my previous life
Why
Not in a previous life , in this life, you are a celt, the celts came from a valley in the czech rep many years ago, you are the same as me, we are both celts - Czech and Irish, best regards from Dublin
Doesn't matter were your from somewhere there's a bit of Irish in all of us except the English even I have friends that r from there they no my beliefs respect to everyone
Welcome home pavel.
@@Tstdycgyr ... Catch yourself on, talk a bit of sense.
This is what the Irish do so well. Full of feeling. Proud to be the son of an Irish Mum and Dad
I grew up in the 60s and 70s in a house full of Irish music, both my parents were Dubliners. We played Luke singing ‘ The Rocky Road to Dublin’ as my dad was carried out of the church. We took both their ashes back to Dublin and spread them on the beach at Portmarnock whet they had their first date ❤️☘️
That's lovely... God bless
So Beautiful that is where I would like to be Sprinkled to rest 🍀 Your folks first date so Beautiful 😇💚🍀
Heartbeat
Lovely 🍀
Total respect, for you.☘
Arguably the best song ever written about unrequited love .
Agreed!
There is no argument !!👍
Poem!
From holland born in drogheda ❤ so so prode to say i.m irish. ☘☘☘☘☘
No other type of music in the world makes me feel the way Irish ballads make me feel, slainte ☘️
Me too. Just touches something deep in the soul like no other
I completely agree 💚☘️
You're right there ☘️
67 and crying, calling for Catherine who is sadly on another shore. What a wonderful version this is.
THIS IS THE ONE!!! ..This rendition of Raglan Road has a slower tempo, which I believe the writer of this tune intended. ...This rendering of that song speaks deeply as it falls ever so gently on the love-strings of the heart. ...Wonderful!!! ...This is the one.
Very well said. A celebration of a deeply personal journey Patrick traversed, sharing poignant melancholy at once profoundly personal yet inescapably relatable. Gratitude to Luke for his humility in marrying this poetic brillance with his subtle legato engaging and inspiring those blessed to experience.
Luke is the one and only friend. He created magic with this song.
This is a good version but Lukes version is impeccable, no argument.
The Irish are a truly beautiful people, what a gift to the world.
Your in, with a name like Colin
@@pmck101 It would be an honour.
We're not all that, to be honest...!
The Irish suffered a lot.
Thank u
Came here from the movie In Bruges...a special song made for and by special people...love from India
As an Irish man living in Cape Town this song stirs my soul to the very core....

I'm sad to here about ur granda May he rest in peace he lives on in you and luke kelly, singing in heaven together 🙂
@@michelllawlor3911 where all ghosts meet!
Any chance that you still have that tape and can upload it to RUclips?
Would be nice to see
My first reaction when I find someone has covered this song is maybe they should have left it alone .. but not this time .. this is truly beautiful, and a fitting tribute to Luke Kelly .. ❤
Mark Knopflers cover is special, too
What a tribute❤❤❤
Agreed! I had the same eyebrow raised. I tend to be that way with anyone doing a cover, they really do need to bring a little bit of something extra…But maybe it took the two of them to match Luke’s soulfulness? But yes indeed I agree it’s a truly beautiful tribute.
I long to go to Ireland and just sit and sing like this while having a drink… someday sooner than later…
From an Irish man living in Australia you guys make me happy and very home sick. God bless
Same here Michael. I hear ya
Same as you guys ya may leave Ireland but Ireland never leaves you.🇮🇪☘

Glen Hansard has a beautiful voice as well. A great singer
Yep! We too grew up in England with Irish parents and Irish music playing - so beautiful 🍀🇮🇪
Beautiful version and Luke would be so proud of it too I’d say 😢😊
Found it:
LUKE KELLY ON HIS 36TH ANNIVERSARY
SONNET FOR LUKE
(Poem by John Sheahan)
A fiery halo crowns your lived-in face,
You shine forth like a beacon from the throng,
Among your fellow peers you set the pace,
And soar above the crowd on wings of song.
Committed to the cause of human rights,
You hold aloft the flame of Amnesty,
When striking workers seek you in their plight,
You rally with your songs unstintingly.
A minstrel boy, you charm your way through life,
Enriching all who chance to pass your way,
You shelter wayward spirits from the night,
And raise them up on wings till dawn of day.
Though links with us alas too soon are severed,
Your spirit and your song will live forever.
I (English, living in France) was asked by a young lady if I could sing this for her. I had never heard the song before, but now I can't stop listening to it. So many versions from Luke Himself to Dick Gaughan, each with their own voice and timbre. I would not presume to say which is better than the others, but a month from now (the next open mic night) I shall sing it for her. I know I won't come close to the lyrical beauty of this, but when I sing I shall be proud to be a (so small, so fleeting) part of this community. God bless Ireland,
Go for it...
Indeed, go for it. Not being Irish, its just a technicality. Ur Irish at heart
Well done
❤💯🤝
Cut it by half and she’ll love you. Go the full distance and you’ll send her to sleep for the rest of the night. Plus you’ll have to leave enough time for the other performers to squeeze a number in.
Close your eyes. Turn up the volume. Float away.
Just seen the Dubliners story the music and cast were amazing being a Scotsman I’m glad the Irish are my close cousins long live the Irish ballad so beautiful to listen to along with my lovely Scottish ballads long live the ballads

Happy birthday John and thank you and all the deceased members of The Dubliners for all the joy you brought to people. This rendition was beautiful, very emotional. God Bless you John. Nr. Ireland.
Oh my heart is way back in the sixties when my darling deceased brother Sean so loved this ballad
every time i see this clip, i play it all the way through withou interruption. i make sure i pay proper tribute to Luke Kelly, John Sheahan and these musicians!
i am not an irish man. But being an boy, he taught me what music is all about. It is life we give to another. HE told me to sing, just be . So simple, and so dam difficult. Well , now he is in heaven, but i do think he has the been one of the greatest singers , an humorus , generous gentlemen, even not of noble birth.
Irish folk music 🎼 is the most beautiful music known to man I’m Scottish with Irish blood as my great grandparents on my mothers side came over to Scotland so I have the best blood running through me Scottish and Irish dna 🇮🇪🏴💚
BEAUTIFUL IN EVERY WAY, A CLASS SHOW ,, I HAD A DRINK WITH THEY DUBLINERS AFTER A CONCERT , I WAS STAYING IN THE SAME HOTEL THEY 5 OF THEM WERE THERE , A NIGHT I WILL NEVER FORGET
In 1978 my then boyfriend and I went fishing with Barney and spent the night drinking and singing with him, his brother and mates at the Lighthouse pub in Howth. He was such a lovely man.
Thanks to everyone who contributed to this. In honor of Luke Kelly. I would not have believed that his memory would be alive like this. Thanks again everyone!
Declan ORoutke very under-appreciated amazing voice
Totally agree, his voice is right up there with the best. Excellent performances all round, magic passion for this great song in spades!

Incredible
Incredible
Yes
Love the irish so natural and so down to earth " real people are hard to find "
I am getting homesick to ireland
I think i lived there in my former life☘️
The Dubliners were honourable men.
I think it's a universal song, most of us have experienced the things in that song.
Thank you John, and your fellow Dubliners for the joy you have giving me,and still are giving me over the years.
John a loyal true friend forever. We all need that friend in our lives.
I remember going into The Boat Inn one night in Oughterard Co Galway after coming from a Saw Doctors concert in Galway. A young girl sang this song ,there was no one else there but her parents and my family ,no music either. she sang this song so beautifully. I never forgot it.
I saw The Dubliners in a pub in Tasmania in the mid '70s. Such timeless, beautiful music and thanks for all the good memories.
Wow, that's such a long way for them to travel! Could hardly be any further away!
Bet a wonderful night was had by all!
@@Lee-nh5bb Yes, really enjoyable thanks!
Hi Rob.. such a long time ago .. only shows the great family connection between us.. Jim Neill limerick
i found this song when i was in search of italian poetry, buried in many other texts, the lyrics of this song catched my eye and, after i read, also catched my heart. Later, looking for more poems of the writer i discovered it was the translation to a song, so there i was, listening it for the first time, yet already enchanted by it, and the cords did not fail to amuse me and live up to my expectations. Now i am listening differents covers, and each and sigle one of them gives a new little touch to the song, keeping its essence and adding it some more. Simply beautiful song, im so glad that for some tricks of the universe i was able to find it!
I was there, flew in from Germany for the concert. Absolutely worth it!
💚🤍🧡
Same here from Switzerland
Myself also from Sydney 🙂
@Reggaeman YO This concert was 2 years ago. Keep up.
@Reggaeman YO Fair comment so apologies for my flippant reply.

Listening to this you can just imagine Barney plucking away on his Banjo. Just so marvellous music.
What a great song and Declan did a fantastic tribute to Luke, Declan is a huge talent and fabulous musician, i have a couple of his albums and they're superb.
Please don't forget Glen, he inspired me as a young man with the frames! Proud to be irish when you hear these lads

I have eldest son, Luke and youngest son, Kelly, superstitious, or not, they were born and named, before I got into my Irish side, and now, I have recently discovered where my Great Grandfather was born in Ireland, and what began as a couple of weeks in Canada and USA for Stampede and Horse trek, has suddenly turned into a voyage of discovery, My Irish and Bohemian heritage

Who cares
Is this where Appalachian music came from?
@@leahflower9924 not much southern Irish influence on Appalachian music, mainly lowland Scots through Northern Ireland and English

Beautiful song, sung beautifully.. As much as I love Luke’s original rendition, I adore this version.
Wonderful that Kavanagh asked Kelly to sing this lovely song.
This rendition will live on for a long many years as a epic version of a historic song!
Amazing performance!!!
