People that wanted the regulation is because they couldn't catch a gator trout. Last year I was at Padrea Island at one of the international turn around and caught a total of 9 specks and 5 of them were pushing about 30 inches. That was during sharkathon.

5 30" Trout is insane, I've seen the pictures of the stringers they used to catch back in the day. We probably won't see any legal stringers like that any time soon.

there should be different guidelines for recreational and fishing guides/ Nobody should be allowed to keep a speckled trout over 30" , not at this time there being overfished. Also, they should be a set number of guides based on a lotto system and increase the fines.

Interesting take on the set number of guides. It seems these days everybody and their mother are fishing guides, I wonder how many of them actually have their 6 pack. lol

That new regulation is terrible! They should of moved it down to 3, but leave the size at 15-25.

Yeah, I agree the chances of catching a 30 inch trout are very slim for most recreational anglers. As I've been trying forever for a trophy over 28 inches. I've had the opportunity to land one that was 30,but lost her at the boat and that was only once. I think this regulation should have been modified to 28 inches like the redfish reg I think this is realistic. Most anglers don't even come close to catching a trout over 24 inches normally. I think we should ban croaker for trout fishing for a couple of reasons especially now with the new reg and replenish the Croaker population. I think we should be resourceful, but I think this reg. Is not. I question where is the scientific data behind this? I think a trout that's over 28 inches is an old fish and not that much younger than a 30 inch trout.

They had an open forum where everyone could go voice their opinion on what the new changes should be and a lot of fishermen were in favor of the new size and bag limit.

They do plan on implementing a tag system similar to the Redfish. I've been fishing the jetties the past few months trying for Jack Crevalle and at least the times I have been there, I have yet to see a person catch a Trout while everyone is using live shrimp and catching Sheepshead and Redfish. I'm not saying there are no Trout, but that is just some anecdotal information. This time of year the Trout are usually stacked around the jetties.

Well, I understand that targeting Trout is harder to do at the Jetties and most people are not really targeting them there. The thing about bigger trout is that most trout over 23 are mostly solo and as a result are harder to catch over 25 inches. It's been easier for me to catch trout at most places where most people don't. I think with fishing it's all about presenting your bait( presentation) or artificial and knowing your target species. For me I always manage to catch keeper trout and do not struggle trying to catch them. The surveys they do at the dock when you come back to the dock usually does not result in a limit of trout except during Croaker bait fishing for trout in the summer. But this is usually a slaughter for most fishermen using Croaker and they do extremely well. I'm surprised that this wasn't considered or on the table for discussion to eliminate this method because it really is a slaughter once you have found the trout. As a whole, trout are harder to target at most fishing spots. But during Croaker trout fishing (summer) season it's like taking a lamb to the slaughter table. For me I never come back with a full stringer of anything even if there for the taking. Yes, I do Believe in conservation, but I think this proposal needs major tweaking.

@marcusramirez8486 In my experience, I have seen it both ways. Sometimes, there is a lone big trout swimming around, and then other times, you get into a little school of 25-28 inch Trout. They do use the doc surveys but they also use Gil net surveys, which they have been doing for about 40+ years so they use those numbers and compare them to previous years Gil net numbers in the same location as well. That way, they know whether the numbers in a certain area have either increased, stayed the same, or declined. Personally, I haven't kept a Trout since even before the big freeze. I prefer eating any of the other local fish, whether it be Redfish, Flounder, Pompano, Black Drum, and Sheepshead. But like I said I haven't been targeting Trout, they could all be stacked up in the bays.
