To many of us, Montana is the undisputed greatest QB of all-time. I was never a 49ers fan, but I used to tune into the SF games just to watch Joe do his zen thing... and of course to witness that almost psychic connection we called Montana to Rice. I'm from Florida, and since 1970, have been a Dolphin fan. Best QB ever? Bob Griese? Dan Marino? Nope. Joe Montana. BTW, thanks for posting this magic, much appreciated.
I used to jump up and down like a little kid when Montana would lead one of his signature comebacks. Football was never the same for me when he retired.
This video fits with my memory of seeing Montana play (on TV). Brilliant play-action (faking run, running pass) and then throwing accurately on the run without ever setting his feet (often throwing mid-air). Every game, it seemed there were 3rd down conversions that were made possible only by Montana's individual effort in that regard. Amazing. And literally no screw ups...ever. The way he moved in and out of the pocket like that defined my idea of how a quarterback "ideally" should be able to play. In his final years, even when he threw 5TDs vs. Denver etc., he still had that ability, but he wasn't so mobile: the injuries had slowed him down, made him more vulnerable and he wasn't quite as exciting to see play. But, then, he could still play clutch situations (e.g. SB23) like no other.
His receivers used to joke about how wobbly Joe's passes were but also said they were like catching feather pillows, they were so soft on the hand. Other QBs would just drill the ball, and those passes might look better in the air, but they were much harder to catch. Joe could drop it in there smooth as silk, while scrambling around like a rabbit. What a legend.
Whether you like them or hate them but that squad in the mid 80's could do more in 3 min than most teams today in 15min. I was lucky enough to watch it live as a kid when history was being made. Montana = the GOAT
You and Me Both were there to see it All!! Also, keep in mind, since 49er's Team of the 80's-90's, Every single Team in the NFL began patterning their calls and drives from the 9er's Play Book! It truly became Football science. :-)
LOL@ Brady... he got his ass kicked last night. Lucky for his team a D player saved the day. Had that been Joe Cool... he would have marched his team down twice in the last 4 min of the game and there wouldn't have been a need for a lucky D play. :-)
These are the best highlight reels of Montana I've ever seen by far. ESPN highlights use too much slow motion, this is great! Joe was the most balanced QB I've ever witnessed. He could do everything. I thought someone might come along and surpass Montana by now, but nobody has. He's still the undisputed standard bearer of quarterbacks. Brady is right behind him and still has a chance, but so far nobody can step up their game in the clutch like Montana could. THe bigger the game, the better he got
Send this to all those who claim Montana was nothing without Rice. Rice isn't even in this video! Montana was great before Rice arrived--and Rice is the first to point that out.
+Greg amato Watch the kicker win the game while Tommy is at the sideline when Montana drove down the field for the touchdown?? 0 interceptions while Brady had 4?? Montana is 4-0 in SB while Brady is 4-2?? gtfoh, I wasn't born during the Montana era, but I got the chance to see him in KC and for him to take the Chiefs to the playoffs with a so-so squad, besides Marcus Allen, that's greatness.
don't be a fool and get caught up with all the hoopla about montani, I remember vividly watching him play a game with the chiefs and he looked mediocre at best w/o jerry rice and the rest of the great supporting cast he had with sf
I think part of Joe Montana's sucsess was the offensive line, I think they were beast! And when a blitz, Joe would drag out of the pocket and would throw it like a beast, any other QB that was this beast was Steve Young
Thanks, excellent montage. The G.O.A.T. NFL quarterback. I was wondering if you could upload in the near future career highlights videos of Dan Marino & Dan Fouts?
Listen to Bill Walsh talk about Montana, according to him Montana was perfect technique-wise. Footwork, accuracy, throwing motion, throwing on the move. When he hit guys notice that they rarely have to even break stride, and yes no one threw on the move like Joe
You know what I love is a bunch of the Notre Dame clips show Montana running the FRIGGIN ZONE-READ OPTION that is the flavor of the times these days. You know, the same Zone Read that supposedly precludes college quarterbacks from being "pro ready" these days. Montana did that, then went on to become the best pure passer of his generation... maybe ever. Wow.
If I needed one drive or just one game I'd put my money on Montana. People forget he was KOd late in the 90/91 NFC title game with the lead with Rice open on the pass he almost got off. He goes down, Young comes in cold. so just trying to run out the clock, Roger Craig fumbles, Giants recover and drive to kick the game winner. Montana closes that game out, probably goes 5-0 in SBs and with a 3peat. Plus, he lost all of 91 and 92 due to that injury. Imagine what SF could have done during those seasons with a healthy Joe. Then he returns after 2 years and leads a so so KC team to the playoffs twice and an AFC title game. He played when you could kill receivers over the middle, get away with contact past 5 yds down field and when QBs got crushed. He won 2 SBs before Rice was even drafted. If Montana stayed healthy and had Walsh for 18 years as Brady has been healthy but for one season and had Belichick 18 years (I excluded 08 when Brady was out) it's unfathomable what Joe coulda done. In only 7 full seasons as a full time starter with Walsh (82 was strike shortened and he didn't start in 79 and not all of 80) he won 3 of his 4 SBs with an 18-1 season in 84 and he also got screwed in the 83 NFC title game by the refs. 4-0 in SBs, zero interceptions and 127.8 SB passer rating. Joe Montana is the greatest QB of all time.
Montana can pass, Montana can run, montana can dive, he can do anything with that ball. He`s the real magician out there just like what Steve Nash can do with the basket ball. Even if i`m from Indonesia and not really understand football, i think he`s one of the greatest football player. Cheers
Amazing, best QB to play the game. If Montana had been healthy through out his career he would have Marino ish numbers. I remember watching him play threw his entire career and he always did what ever it took to win. Accurate, mobile, cool under pressure, athletic. The guy was incredible and a class act to boot. He was not afraid to go head first at the goal line. And when your only 6'1" and 200 lbs wet that is a feat in its self. I am a huge Elway/Bronco fan but Joe has my vote for BEST ever.
This is an excellent compilation...the best out there. thank you. In my mind, the only QBs playing today that could even be mentioned in the same breath as Montana is Tom Brady & Ben Rothlisberger. Tom definitely a big game QB like Joe was, but lacks the elusiveness and pocket presence that Joe had. Ben is a budding big game QB who may carve his own nitch into the NFL when it's all said and done, but for now, Joe is the best QB to ever step on the field bar none.
I'm a life long Cowboys fan who died a thousand deaths when Montana connected with Clarke in that famous NFC playoff game. I still hate that play and the outcome but I did become a Montana/49ers fan. He's my favorite QB of ALL TIME.
Montana is the greatest. Great players make decent players around them better, and he did that. His numbers and his influence make him the best ever end of story.
to Bobsanders222, Joe won championships in HS, college and won a superbowl before he even shook Jerry Rice's hand. Yes, Jerry is the greatest receiver ever to play the game, but the QB is the single most vital element of an offense. It was amazing to watch Jerry play, but much more amazing to see how Joe could scan the field, analyze and break down a defense piece by piece with a poise, coolness and intelligence that is yet to be matched. And he did it best when it mattered most!!
today's rules benefits the Passing game so much more than when Montana played for the reason you already mentioned (heavily enforced 5 yard bump and extended hands to block) but it's also the physicality of the game back then. Now you can't lead with the helmet, you cant hit a QB below the knees, you cant touch a QB's helmet without getting flagged.hitting a defenseless WR is huge, smaller WR's go down the middle now. Back in the day they'd get lit up and never run through the middle again
Jerry Rice was drafted in 85, a year after 49ers took their 2nd Superbowl. Montana's primary receivers in 1981 and 1984 teams were number 87 Dwight Clark and Freddie Solomon who wore number 86 and 88.
wow im a brady fan, n ppl comtpare brady to this guy tom I still love u but after watching this their is no camparason, Montana does look like he was the best ever he didn't even fold under pressure
@damomand You also forget about the 49er defense which was the most underrated ever. They shutout the Bears in the 85 NFC Title game, held the Bengals scoreless in the first half of SB XVI, held them to 16 points in SB XXIII, held Marino's Dolphins to 16 points in SB XIX and Elway's Bronco's to 10 points SB XXIV. Eric Wright, Kena Turner, Hacksaw Reynolds and of course Ronnie Lott among others coached by Defensive genius George Seifert.
My point is that the major changes were the bump and run after 5 yds and head slap to the O linemen. Both were gone for Montana in 81. We agree since Montana's day P. Manning, Brady etc.have had already existing rules called in their favor more than Montana got. But my point is that even Joe's stats and rings were accomidated by those rules changes too. Best example is Bradshaw who won 2 rings before rules changes 74/75 with a ground attack offense and 2 rings after with a pass attack 78/79
I agree with those that say Aaron Rodgers is reminiscent of Montana. Let's see if he can beat the Steelers in this upcoming Superbowl. Brady and Manning are great, but neither like to scramble. If their pocket breaks down, then they're usually in trouble. Montana & Rodgers also had/have a cold blooded, methodical way of reading everything and making a decision.
The greatest thing to do to this video is watch it while listening to the NFL Primetime Song 2. (type in "NFL Primetime Song 2" into youtube search and play the song). It brings you back to the best replay videos of the golden years of the 49ers. Montana is still my favorite quarterback to this day. Go Niners!!!
#88 Freddie Solomon was the deep / speed / catch-and-long-run threat back before they drafted Jerry Rice and John Taylor, who both ended up doing the same thing only even better.
Pinning a Team back on the 1 yard line isn't as easy since they moved up the kickoffs as well. Again helps to offenses. It's a culmination of todays rules that would make someone like Montana better today. Marinos passing record stood for decades and then all of a sudden in one year like 3 or 4 QB's break 5000 yards. that's no coincidence.
montana and favre are simply the best QB ever running to their left and throwing back to the right...its crazy. if you give montana favres arm is hands down the bets QB ever and if u give Favre Montanas brain its the same
I always liked the way Joe never pounded his chest and said he was the best ,He would down play his abilities and come back from his injuries. A true team player and real champion that let his play not his mouth prove it . That's why I think he's the #1 greatest Q.B. And he had to live up to a great name for a Q.B. hahahahaha peace!!
Traditional (i.e. public domain/no author) sea shanty called "Drunken Sailor". Instrumental versions of it were a popular selection for NFL films. This sounds like a hip-hop styled remix thereof.
@Potandthekettle - Exactly, I'm glad you are finally getting the point. Comparing Ainge to Jordan is just as idiotic as comparing Moon to Montana....that's why I made the analogy.
@Zacatown Totally agree the Niners went from my team growing up in the mid 80's to late 90's to the nothing to me as a fan when they traded him to the Chiefs matter of fact I haven't followed football seriously since he retired now I am just a geographical loose fan of the Titans because I live in Nashville but no passion at all.
Ahhh a young niner fan here. Last good quarterback was Jeff garcia. If he was the quarterback in the last three years the niners would have 2 SBS. But have to support colin. Joe Montana share some magic
To all you debaters---Here's why Montana is better than Brady. He used to hold the record for rushing yards in a superbowl, until Steve Mcnair broke it in a losing effort. Montana could run, that seperates him from Brady. End of story. If Brady could actually run, then you could make a case that he is better. Same goes with Manning.
Since I was not alive before the 80's....I cannot judge the Bradshaw's,Unitas,Otto's,Staubachs etc completely...therefore to me in my lifetime 1980 and on....Montana was the best period no question...and then you can make a argument for maybe Elway,Marino,Brady,Aikmen,Favre,Manning,Young etc to fill out the top 10
Montana was great at throwing while moving to his left, which is a rare talent in QBs. Brady's strength is reading the coverage while standing in the pocket, and he rarely if ever does that.
(cont.) People like Montana, Elway, and Marino would love to trade places with Brady b/c of all the rules nowadays helping the qb's. Eddie too tall Jones was quoted on Mike and Mike saying he had over 100 sacks, and was never once called for roughing the passer. Was he gentle? No! They just weren't pussies back then like Brady is now. Montana would torch the NFL now if he was in his prime. If he played for the Pats 4 Sb's? How bout 10? Btw I didn't like Montana for beating us, so I am NOT biased
@explaintheuniverse I totally agree with you.I also can't understand why Montana isn't considered as the best ever. But please can you tell me names of the songs?
@MrIcegube I agree. Brady, in the 2007 season, arguably had the best season any QB has ever had in the history of the league. There were many times during that season when you looked at the score board and you thought they were playing Madden. I love his demeanor, especially in the CLUTCH. This guy IS A WINNER. I'd take him over Peyton any day of the week.
@johnmichael601 Yeah. Either way, it is a compliment to Rodgers. Steve Young was a lefty, VERY accurate, intelligent, and was a threat to run. Joe had a cold blooded demeanor to him. He didn't seem to get rattled by the situation and pulled off the improbable (I heard John Madden call him the Indiana Jones of quarterbacks). Rodgers has a superbowl, but only time will tell how great he can be.
@Potandthekettle Between your comments about Warren Moon, Montana, Unitas and the "douche", you have no idea how much entertainment you have provided to me and some friends at work. You should be a stand up comic or something. Thanks for the laughs bro!!
I think the biggest reason joe is #1 is not the records, comebacks, or big plays he made. Its the fact that he won a Superbowl in 81 and then won 3 more. If you look at the later Superbowls they are basically completely different teams. Who does that? between 81-98 the 49ers didn't have a losing season and could have gone to the superbowl almost every year. I mean the 9ers went to 10 conference championship .
@damomand Terry Bradshaw also won Count EM 4 Super Bowls and in 6 years and Back to Back twice. Joe won 4 over 9 years and back to back once. Joe one SB MVP 3 times but never in consecutive SB games like Terry. Bradshaw threw a TD pass in the 4th quarter of every SB including a perfect 73 yarder in XIV and a perfect game deciding 64 yarder in X called by NFL Films the best pas ever. As well as the game decider in XIII and clincher in IX. Terry called his own plays Joe was Walsh's Robot.
To many of us, Montana is the undisputed greatest QB of all-time. I was never a 49ers fan, but I used to tune into the SF games just to watch Joe do his zen thing... and of course to witness that almost psychic connection we called Montana to Rice. You were alive thena? I wasnt bron
I was in 7th grade when I first saw Montana play. It's one of those memories that's burned into you forever.
I used to jump up and down like a little kid when Montana would lead one of his signature comebacks. Football was never the same for me when he retired.
Same here, football will never be the same without the GOAT 🐐 and COAT 🥼Clutchest Of All Time on the Gridiron.
I remember when I was a kid, people said "Joe can't run." Montana ran pretty good. Man, it was my favorite time watching the NFL...... Go 9ers!!!!
This video fits with my memory of seeing Montana play (on TV). EXACTLY.
i thought Rodgers was good at throwing on the run but dang montana has him beat
4:21 He came outta nowhere, fast! Joe had a good eye & senses
+2haveitall1 Oh, way more than that, Joe was Zen and almost operated on a different plane
Whether you like them or hate them but that squad in the mid 80's could do more in 3 min than most teams today in 15min. I was lucky enough to watch it live as a kid when history was being made. Montana = the GOAT

I used to watch this everyday when I played this is awrsome I found it again
Montana is the GOAT. He brought a 12 loss team to the superbowl in his 2nd year. 4-0 will 11 td's and 0 int's in superbowls. hands down the GOAT
This Man is the greatest QB ever and he needs a 30 for 30 or updated documentary.
Joe Montana A Football Life.....where is it?
Montana the GOAT 🐐 and the COAT 🥼Clutchest Of All Time
These are the best highlight reels of Montana I've ever seen by far. ESPN highlights use too much slow motion, this is great! Joe was the most balanced QB I've ever witnessed. He could do everything. Brady could never throw on the move like Montana. There also has never been a quarterback who could make multiple reads faster than Joe Montana.
Send this to all those who claim Montana was nothing without Rice. Rice isn't even in this video! Montana was great before Rice arrived--and Rice is the first to point that out.
GOAT....Would've been great in any system....period!!!!!
Perfect passes while he's on the run for TD's. Some of those passes were almost 40 yards down field while he was on the run. JOE MONTANA.
The music on this video is awesome! I'm definitely a fan of Joe, but I frequently come to this video just to hear the music and get pumped up!
Best ever, Candlestick Park baby.
I wish I was alive when Montana was playing
sheSame here!
+Chris Ames you didn't need to , just watch Brady, he's way better
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, Brady aint the comeback kid dude

Joe montana was the Scarface of the N.F.L
holy shit dude, this is outstanding!!!
Joe is one of the best ever, and without question the GOAT clutch QB in NFL history
can't thank you enough man.
If I needed one drive or just one game I'd put my money on Montana.

BEST quarterback ever, in my opinion !
Joe Cool! Really wish I could've seen this man play. I heard my Packers passed up on him in '79. We sure could've used him during those days...
That NFC game still gives me goose bumps that was probally the best game I evr saw.
love the music in the beginning it sounds like a gladiator movie.
Hands down the best "on the move" passer of all time and in my opinion the best QB of all time period until Aaron Rodgers show otherwise.
No. He'll always be the GOAT. If Shaaron Rodgers would be playing in Montana's time, no way he'd get those passing yards, let alone be in a SB.
greatest QB ever....period. his style was amazing.
Thanks for uploading this.
I love it.
Joe Montana = THE best ever.
George Vreeland Hill
Montana can pass, Montana can run, montana can dive, he can do anything with that ball. He`s the real magician out there just like what Steve Nash can do with the basket ball. Even if i`m from Indonesia and not really understand football, i think he`s one of the greatest football player. Cheers
As has been said, great at throwing on the run and also against his body. Jonnie U is before my time but Montana is the best QB I've ever seen.

I'd forgotten what an awesome scrambler the GOAT truly was.
Thanks for posting this. My favorite player of all time and I agree the best QB ever.
Haha the pump fake towards the end faked out the cameraman XD truly awesome stuff
This is an excellent compilation...the best out there. thank you. In my mind, the only QBs playing today that could even be mentioned in the same breath as Montana is Tom Brady & Ben Rothlisberger. He's gotta have the title "Prettiest Spirals of All Time".

Eric Wright, Kena Turner, Hacksaw Reynolds and of course Ronnie Lott among others coached by Defensive genius George Seifert.
I lived in Denver and we had great quarterback. However, Joe was the best at the highest moment in all of sports.
Incredible!!! GOAT
Joe Montana is Thor from Valhalla! Peyton Manning is, well, Sylvester Stallone!
best of all time without a doubt

The best of the best.
You are right, he is fabulous, so Joe can be the best in organized team sports.

His passes are like a sniper shot!
Happy Birthday Joe Montana!!!!
@Zacatown
Totally agree the Niners went from my team growing up in the mid 80's to late 90's to the nothing to me as a fan when they traded him to the Chiefs matter of fact I haven't followed football seriously since he retired now I am just a geographical loose fan of the Titans because I live in Nashville but no passion at all.
Orchestra is awesome
The BEST EVER!!!!
Ahhh a young niner fan here. Last good quarterback was Jeff garcia. If he was the quarterback in the last three years the niners would have 2 SBS. But have to support colin. Joe Montana share some magic
🃏
Where's Jerry Rice
This was pre-Rice, Montana had been a two time Superbowl MVP before Rice got to SF.....and then once Rice got there it was on like donkey kong.
@MrIcegube
I agree.
@johnmichael601
Yeah.
Thanks for the laughs bro!!
has a winner`s heart...
@Blackhawks2010Champs You have a strong argument about the balanced offense. Fair enough
The only athlete that comes close to Joe Montana in greatness is Secretariat.
Here after watching Eyeshield 21..
So slick
para mi el mejor deportista de todos los tiempos
🐐
I think the biggest reason joe is #1 is not the records, comebacks, or big plays he made. Its the fact that he won a Superbowl in 81 and then won 3 more. If you look at the later Superbowls they are basically completely different teams. Who does that?
between 81-98 the 49ers didn't have a losing season and could have gone to the superbowl almost every year. I mean the 9ers went to 10 conference championship .
Best quarterback I ever seen...........
That is why he is the best.
I agree he is still the greatest QB of all time, and I'm a Cowboys' fan.
