    Great videos! Awe this brings back so many memories. The talent that Montana had at remaining calm and basically knowing how to dissect a defense with the precision of a surgeon. Ask anyone who played against him during this time. Teams hated him and he became a marked man. There really is no other and to compare him to Brady is useless. I have watched both these 2 quarterbacks over the last 25 years and by far, hands down, Montana is calmer, more patient and a true leader on the field. Brady is an excellent QB in his own right. But in the end, if I had a team right now going to the Super Bowl and had the option of having Montana (in his prime) or Tom Brady (in his prime) as my QB, I would take Montana, hands down, there is no doubt.

    Joe Montana; All-Time Hero. Montana was impressive, squirreling his way out of the pocket and his precision fire-bombs, unmatched. His greatest achievements include some unimaginable comebacks, over, and over, and over again. Luck? I think not. His amazing comebacks and pre-date his 49er era into Notre Dame and high school games.

  • @czechraiser
    @czechraiser 11 лет назад +1

    I was lucky enough to be a Niners and Notre Dame fan just before Montana came on the scene with Notre Dame. He gave me the best years a football fan could ever dream of having. The comebacks he made for both teams were astonishing in their variety and frequency. He threw a perfect ball, made great reads, threw on the run incredibly well, and was just sick throwing the fifteen yard out pass to Dwight Clark that stopped the clock on last minute drives. Joe Montana - truly awesome.

    Well said. There are many regular season stats QBs out there (Peyton Manning & Tony Romo are great examples of this) who can't handle the increased intensity of the playoffs. As Al Pacino said "when squeezed, some focus, and some fold". Montana focused and shined brighter than any QB before or after him. Timing is everything when it comes to measuring the greatness of an althlete. It's not so much what he did was great, it's that what he did was greatest when it counted the most.

    I know his numbers in XXIV were technically better, but XIX is my favorite of his SB performances, outside of The Drive. He showed everything he could do and had the opposing defense talking about him afterward like he was a cross between a ghost and a god. Everyone went into the game talking about Marino, and everyone came out of the game bowing their heads to Montana. Marino was a truly fantastic QB who deserved a SB win, but Montana was something special in football history, imo.

    I did a college report on why Montana was the greatest QB of all time. At the time (1996) he had 9 division titles, taken his team to playoffs 11 times (SF, KC), and 7 Championships games, all records. Even Otto Graham only went to 6 nfl championships (the other 4 were in the aafc. So Montana is truly the man.
    And when you consider that in his 16 seasons, he was a starter for only 11 full seasons (1982 was a strike year) and he went to the playoffs all 11 times!!! No QB but him can say that.

    If I needed one drive or just one game I'd put my money on Montana.
    People forget he was KOd late in the 90/91 NFC title game with the lead with Rice open on the pass he almost got off.
    He goes down, Young comes in cold. so just trying to run out the clock, Roger Craig fumbles, Giants recover and drive to kick the game winner.
    Montana closes that game out, probably goes 5-0 in SBs and with a 3peat.
    Plus, he lost all of 91 and 92 due to that injury.
    Imagine what SF could have done during those seasons with a healthy Joe. Then he returns after 2 years and leads a so so KC team to the playoffs twice and an AFC title game. He played when you could kill receivers over the middle, get away with contact past 5 yds down field and when QBs got crushed.
    He won 2 SBs before Rice was even drafted.
    If Montana stayed healthy and had Walsh for 18 years as Brady has been healthy but for one season and had Belichick 18 years (I excluded 08 when Brady was out) it's unfathomable what Joe coulda done.
    In only 7 full seasons as a full time starter with Walsh (82 was strike shortened and he didn't start in 79 and not all of 80) he won 3 of his 4 SBs with an 18-1 season in 84 and he also got screwed in the 83 NFC title game by the refs. 4-0 in SBs, zero interceptions and 127.8 SB passer rating. Joe Montana is the greatest QB of all time.

His 64 yarder to Swann in SB X is called by NFL Films Best Ever TD pass.

  • @mr.a3324

    Great as Montana was, I think Unitas was the best ever. He played in an era in which the defense had the upper hand. He called his own plays. Could Montana have called his own? I bet he would have been great at it, but not so great as Bill Walsh and Mike Holmgren were.
    Unitas' 1959 season is, in my opinion, the greatest passing season ever. He threw 32 touchdowns in twelve games (just under 43 in a sixteen games) at a time in which defensive backs could make contact with receivers anywhere on the field, provided the ball was not in the air (even then, they had a lot more leeway back then). His record of 47 consecutive games with at least one touchdown pass is one of the great feats in sports history.
    Montana didn't really have a weakness. Sure, his arm wasn't the strongest, but that was never a problem; he threw with great timing and accuracy. He played great postseason football, especially in the Super Bowl. Among post-rules changes quarterbacks, I count Montana as the best. Pre-rules change guys, Unitas. Both were great.

    I find it amazing how every time Montana is mentioned as the best ever they bring up today's rules. The fact is the rules changes that benefited the offense happened in 1977 and 78 before Montana was drafted in 79 or started in 81.
    I agree they are more heavily enforced now but fact is Montana benefited from the no touching the receiver past 5 yds and no head slap to the O lineman and O lineman being allowed to pass protect with their arms extended and hands opened as much as any QB did.

    "Some of the guys seemed more than normally tense," Montana recalled, "especially Harris Barton, a great offensive tackle who has a tendency to get nervous." As usual, Montana was just focusing on the situation...Just then he happened to spot the late actor John Candy in the stands. "Look" he said, 'isn't that John Candy." It was hardly what his teammates expected to hear in the huddle with the Super Bowl on the line. But it definitely broke the tension.

    I think that Brady's in the pocket presence comes close to Montana, but Brady isn't very good when pressure gets to him (he isn't a good scrambler). Aaron Rodgers may be the closest overall QB to Montana. Rodgers is devastating on the run, reads defenses, doesn't mind broken plays, and is calm. Montana was a combination of Brady and Rodgers.

    The older I get, the more I realize just how amazing this man was. Imagine a QB today who just won his 4th superbowl, 3rd superbowl MVP, and had a SB QB rating of 127.8 with 11 TDs, 0 INT, and a superbowl average of 300+ yards. He would be the undisputed GOAT and the NFL analysts would be salivating all over themselves. Aside from all of the physical abilities he had, it was his ability to raise his play in the clutch that set him apart. Marino was a great QB, but I don't think he was as versatile as Montana. Yes, Marino had more mustard on his passes and was probably the most dead on accurate passer in history, but he could not scramble (90 yards rushing for his entire career). Also, as Bill Walsh stated, Joe could see and anticipate a play develop and react to it faster and more precisely than any QB in history. Joe earned 4 rings with his brains and his ability to raise his level of play when it counted most.

    I concur, Shafter. The Steeler defense bailed Bradshaw out - for the umpteenth time, in the second half against LA. Don't forget the previous Super Bowl where Swann and Stallworth also made sick acrobatic grabs, and Jackie Smith of the Boyz muffed what would have been the game winning touchdown. Staubach would have been MVP.
    When they played Minnesota, it was all Steeler defense. Bradshaw had about 90 yards passing. That whole defense practically is in the HOF.

    I think it's misleading to just look at 4th qtr comebacks. You can make the argument that Montana had fewer comebacks because he had the Niners up by so much in the 4th that he didnt need to make a comeback. You gotta look at the total package when it comes to QB. Montana has stats, comebacks, longevity and rings. You add ALL those up and there's no doubt. Montana is the man.

    @TheRgordon16 Dude, I agree. There is no one I'd rather have QBing my team than Joe Montana. He's been winning big games his whole life ('78 NCAA Champ & SB '81'84'88'89) The guy had it all, including the "Cool name" As for 49ers Tm of 80's... definately.But you can argue they were also Tm of 90's... From 90-99, they won the most gms, played in the most Conf Champ Gms, and seeing as the SB is played in Jan, they do in fact have 2 SB's in the 90's. Strong claim for Tm of 90s...just a thought

    Tom Brady's legacy is all shady. Tuck rule, Spygate, false injury reports, deflate gate and the luckiest break to end a championship game in sports history. Compare that to Joe's signature moments. "The Catch" The 92 yd SB TD drive, beating the Bears 46 D in the 84 NFC title game, 2 SB blowout wins with Elway and Marino as his counterparts, no ints in SBs. Plus it was a highly controversial interference call that prevented Joe from not going to the SB in 83 NFC title game and only his injury late in the 90 NFC title game with that stopped him 3peating. Joe could easily have 6 rings if not for refs n injury in NFC title games. Or at the least played in 6. plus his ability to throw outside of the pocket and to run was amazing.

      Tom's legacy is all shady because you want to look at it that way. You are turning a blind eye for the rest of the league and pointing the finger at the Pats that fucking kills because it is a double standard. It is like saying George Bush is legit because he never got caught but Bill Clinton is bad because he broke his oaths and got a blow job. You need to redefine what is real and what is not.

    • @Price70
      @Price70 9 лет назад +2

      Micscience No, Brady's legacy includes video taped signals that went back to 2000 that Goodell burned so we couldn't see how bad they were. The Tuck Rule which was not even called right because his arm was no coming back any longer when he lost the ball and his coach lying on injury reports to alter the way the opponent prepares. These are things that directly affect the outcome of games.

    • @Micscience
      @Micscience 9 лет назад +1

      Price Pittsburgh
      First off it wasn't Brady, second the entire league was doing it the NFL said you couldn't do it from a certain angle anymore. The Tuck rule was a lucky call I admit that however TB isn't the first person to get a lucky call they still had to score and win the superbowl. By the way his arm went down intentionally going back is debatable.
      "These are things that directly effects outcomes of games? "
      you fucking kidding me? Why then do you ignore when other players and other teams do it? why? tell me? because you hate them. you are a hater that is your roll in life.

    • @Price70
      @Price70 9 лет назад +2

      Micscience Brady barely played in the 01 AFC title game, he was KOd and Bledsoe gets him 10 points and and special teams gets him 14. Then he needs a miracle BS call by Carrol to win this last SB. The 2 he lost that Pats ans say were fluky, he only got them 14 and 17 points in those games. The memo sent out in 06 was not the new rule, it was a memo reminding all coaches not to do it and specifically not to tape signals. Not everyone was doing it because only Belichick had tapes to give up to Goodell going back to 2000. No other coaches had tapes or notes then Goodell destroyed the tapes because he knew not everyone was doing it. Joe only started 10 full seasons as a starter with SF and was knocked out, in the 4th, late, with the lead, of the 90 NFC title game, on his way to a 5th ring and 3peat. He then misses all of 91 and 92 and spends his last 2 years in KC. If he stays healthy he rolls with SF into the 90s with the team Young couldn't get over the hump for 91, 92 and 93. Brady missed 08 but started his second season. Montana missed 91, 92, didn't start til his 3rd season and 93 and 94 we can't compare because it's not the same when you're not with your squad, but he made them darn good, going to an AFC title game while he was old. Plus not only did he only lose the 90 NFC title game because of a late injury but it was a highly questionable pass interference call that prevented Joe from winning the 83 NFC title game vs the Skins.

      With other teams teams he could have had much lesser QBs too. Plus, even his great short catch runs had disciplined blocking that other coaching staffs may not have had. He's got 3 rings, 2 with Joe and one with Steve and caught the game winning TD in a SB. Don't feel sorry for him. Feel sorry for the HOF WRs with no rings.

    @TainoMantis Well I can't argue with your logic....I also have to add that it's kind of in vogue to say Montana had a weak arm. Which is really stupid when you look at those 30-40 yard strikes.
    I'd dare any clown saying Montana did not have a strong arm to try and throw ONE 30yd pass on any NFL corner and see if he doesn't close it out and make a pick. Much less throw one while on the move.
    It wasn't an Elway cannon or Fouts/Marino lightning trigger but it was by no means average either.

    Joe Montana played on a lot better teams than other QB's?
    BS. He still had to make the throws, hit the open receiver, and he did that time and time again, effortlessly. No one still to this day goes through his reads like Joe Montana did. He's the natural; he's the standard.
    J. Unitas or J. Montana? I go with Mr. Montana.

    @Tiberius0001 Cards of 07 beat 07 Steelers then lost 08 SB to Steelers, so what's the point?
    I'm not saying the Steelers D didn't help Terry but it went both ways.
    Jack Ham who is a first ballot HOF LB said "If it weren't for Bradshaw I wouldn't have 4 Rings" and All Pro DE Dwight White agreed with Terry's comment "You can lose with me but you'll never win without me"
    Marino threw for 5,048 yds and 48 TDs in 1984 the SF D crushed him in the SB as they did Elway, 2 of the best QBs ever.

    No, I meant the defense bailed Bradshaw out. If not for the defense stopping L.A. every time Bradshaw was picked, LA would have put that game away. They sacked Ferragamo how many times? That Ram team was decimated with injuries that year, they were just getting guys back in the playoffs and Youngblood played the SB with a broken leg, thus LA's pass rush was severly hampered and Bradshaw had all day to throw
    That same Ram team shut the Steelers down to 7 points a year prior with a healthy team
