Exactly. And thise licks in Freebird ... they were HEAVILY INFLUENCED by Rickey Medlocke (leader of Blackfoot ) They all grew up together. Rickey and Skynyrd's history intertwine many times over the years. Hell, he's their first guitar player, and has played guitarvfir them for about 30 years now.
I mean, he's their second drummer, and current guitar player of last 3 decades.
That's southern rock.... Now you have to do "Train, Train". and don't wait 6 months to do it...lol

You picked it apart too much. Some driving songs you have to just listen to and enjoy the feel of the song and the mood it creates. I was a 19 year old girl listening to and enjoying it in my old muscle car in 1979🥰. And yes, you need to hear Train, Train by them

Im just now seeing this reaction. Too much analysis for my taste. I can tell you exactly where I was the first time I heard this. I actually pulled over to the side of the road. I was gripped immediately. I never considered any of the points you were making, it just felt so goddamn good. Just listen and enjoy, damn.

“Train Train - with intro” is the Blackfoot song to review. BTW: Did you know this is a band is made up almost entirely of musicians with Native American ancestry? Jakson Spires (from Oklahoma) had a Cheyenne/French father and a Cherokee mother; Rickey Medlocke's father was Lakota Sioux and Blackfoot Indian, and his mother's side is Creek/Cherokee, Scottish and Irish; Greg "Two Wolf" Walker is part Eastern (Muskogee) Creek, a tribe recognized by the state of Florida, but not federally. Charlie Hargrett was the only white man of the original, classic line-up.
If memory serves, Jakson Spires was a Blackfoot. 2 members of the band were Seminole, and of course, Ken Hensley is British and formerly of Uriah Heep.

The leader of Blackfoot, Rickey Medlocke, has been in Lynyrd Skynyrd for years and was in an early version of Skynyrd.
Both bands are from Jacksonville.
Rickey was in Skynyrd when they recorded their Muscle Shoals demo, before their first album - he was on drums. He has been in the revived Skynyrd on guitar and vocals for many years now

Classic southern rock from a band with many close ties to lynyrd skynyrd (brothers and cousins and band mates, the similarity is no accident), definitely train train from the same album... I don' think you've done 'Can't You See' by the Marshall Tucker Band - another wave top southern rock classic -- with flute.

Absolutely. I've been meaning to tell these guys they are really missing out on one of the very best bands of the 70s - Little Feat. And my suggestions were going to be Dixie Chicken, Fat Man In the Bathtub, and Two Trains Running. But they can't go wrong with any Feats song with their sometimes surreal lyrics, incredible musicianship and funky ass deliveries. Great band; great playing and jamming; and deserving of a place in the R&R HOF. Try them out guys, you'll love them.
I love Waiting for Columbus, but I'm not sure it's the best place for LF newbies to start. Fat Man in the Bathtub in particular I'd probably start with the studio version

This is one of my favorite songs of all-time. This band was formed by Rickey Medlocke who drummed with Skynyrd in '71-'72, then formed Blackfoot and picked up the axe as lead (he was also the vocalist). In '96 he rejoined Skynyrd in the same capacity(except now doing backing vocals), and has been with them ever since. A very talented dude. GREAT CHOICE here, men!
I totally understand the "Free Bird" comparison by newcomers, but I think it has a totally different vibe/tone/feel/intent - call it what you want. I never drew that comparison, myself anyway, from Day One of listening to this at age 12 in '79.

Like when Bob Seger first came out with Ramblin' Man, people in big part of U.S. never heard it until years later. But, he was Detroit man and it was played non-stop. Probably a dozen times a day in Midwest.
Idk about regional. I'm in PA and this was one of the first songs i learned on the the guitar. The intro that is. The rest would come much later.

Never heard this song before in my life, and I'm in my 50s....definitely agree that it sounds like a "let's do a Free Bird too" kind of thing
actuarial lurker - I'm scratching my head!! I'm 64 yrs old and I didn't recognize title nor the band name. But knew if it's THAT popular, I'd know it from first few notes. But, was as foreign to me. Now, I'm just left here trying to figure that out. It's not possible that a "Great song" of 60's or 70's got by me. Was it a song or entire band that just couldn't get radio airplay?? I'm lost cuz not even a 60's or 70's Pop song I hated didn't swoosh past me. And when FM Underground Radio started, that's how I got to know great bands like Humble Pie, MC5, some Frank Zappa, etc. Do you know the band??

A lot of bands tried to replicate the Skynyrd sound in the era. Some good songs came out of it, but often it was way too obviously derived
Someone above said this song was a tribute to Lynyrd Skynyrd- therefore, some similarities. I knew they were both FL, but I thought Blackfoot was Jax and TP and LS were Gainesville. Molly Hatchet, met 'em years ago in ORL but didn't look up...I'd guess Gainesville again. Po-dunk town like Athens, GA, but popular colleges.
Someone already mentioned "Train, Train," so I will add "Wishing Well" as another you ought to sample from these guys. (Personal disclaimer: I never heard the original by Free, so the purists will have my head for the suggestion -- sue me, it's still good, as is Gary Moore's version. 😁)
If you guys do "Train, Train" make sure you get a version that includes the harmonica solo intro.

This song is one of my favorites, just because of the mood and tone. Blackfoot has some really cool songs, and the lead guitarist for blackfoot is now with Lynyrd Skynyrd, and has been ever since the plane crash in the late 70's. His name is Rickey Medlocke, and he is amazing. They have another song and I don't think yall have reacted to it yet, because I can't find it on your channel. It's called Train, Train and it was written in I believe the 1920's by the lead singer's grandfather. Correct me if I'm remembering incorrectly, those who may know. In any case, it's a short but sweet song, like Black Betty.
He returned to Lynyrd Skynyrd. He was with them in 1971-1972.

That sounds amazing! I wish I could have been there, but I was born in 2000, so I haven't gotten to see much. I did get to see Bad Company with Lynyrd Skynyrd back in October of 2018 in Nashville, and it was amazing. By far the best show I've ever seen. I have been to a few, but none compare to that one.

Haven`t heard this in years. Good choice. You must give a band from California called Spirit a listen.Their album "The Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus" is amazing from beginning to end. Espcially "Mr. Skin", "Nature`s Way" and "Animal Farm". "Mr. Skin" should be your first pick. I like the way you listen and talk about the tunes in an intelligent way just like we did. Great having you guys around.

This entire album rocks! For my money, easily Blackfoot's best from tip to tail. Another great sort of obscure track off the Strikes album that I think you two would really dig is "Left Turn On A Red Light." Check it out.
Great song. I had a morning show on a classic rock radio station back in the 90s for a few years. Every Tuesday was "Two-fer Tuesday," and "Left Turn..." was always one of the two Blackfoot tunes I would play.
I wore this album out back in the early 80s. I would also suggest the cover of Spirit's "I Got A Line On You" from the album.
Songs off later albums include "Fly Away" and "Teenage Idol".

I saw the critique coming a mile away. As for as it sounding like Freebird, that is what record companies wanted out of Southern rock bands and Ricky Medloke being a founding member of Lynrd Skynyrd this was absolutely unavoidable for him. Every Southern rock band after Skynrd has their "freebird". Blackfoot fully put their own stamp on the genre, going a more hard rock (almost metal sometimes) direction after satisfying the masters.
So glad you guys did this. You guys keep me inspired. So does hearing all the great .music I grew up with. Rock on brothers.

The singer and guitarist actually played drums for Skynyrd at one point. This song was a tribute to Skynyrd after the plane crash ( I believe). Medlocke is now a guitarist for Skynyrd
I can't agree with your rating of a B or a B+, as I love this song and this band. Blackfoots Strike is a very cool album also has the banger Train, Train on it. Great Southern rock band. My Rickey Medlocke story -- We're sitting in one of the loges at our local concert venue to see our first Joe Bonamassa show. My wife notices the guy in the front row (just in front of us) and figures he's an old rocker based on his hair, his lady friend, whatever. Didn't say this to me at the time but when he got up in the middle of the show and disappeared through a side door only to appear on stage as a guest artist she said "I knew it!" Turned out Joe was returning a favor from years before when Skynyrd invited a much younger JB up on stage to play with the band. I guess Mr. Medlocke lived in Naples, FL at that time and made the short trip north to see the show as Joe's guest.

Blackfoot was a solid mid-level Southern Rock band. They weren't elite and leading like The Allmans or Skynyrd, but they were solid in concert and reliable. You knew exactly what you were gonna get, no surprises or party tricks, just good ol' Southern Rock. Like many have noted, Train Train is their main track, haha.

Being in High School in Jax when Skynyrd went down, it was heartbreaking and we were looking for something to help us get over the loss. Here comes Molly Hatchet in '78 and Blackfoot got popular with this album in '79 and we were in southern rock heaven. We said this is their FreeBird but really an homage to their southern friends. They were all killer in concert. Lot of great music from Jax in the 70s.
I've been seeing an increasing number of hateful comments recently about song choices. For those that may not be aware, the choices that A&A pick to react to are nearly all based on song suggestions in these comment sections -- the ones that get a lot of thumbs-ups get thrown into the weekly Community polls. Although this song did not win the weekly poll, it did get a lot of original thumbs-ups from viewers.
A&A doesn't always review my favorite pics, but in my view commenters need to stop criticizing how certain songs get selected unless you can suggest a better system for selecting songs (and no, they should not just react to what YOU think is worthy). Seems to me the complainers' two options are to either rally other viewers to thumb up their suggestions or to stop watching. End of rant (as someone would say).

The goal is for everybody to at least have 1 pick they like each week, we try to have each pick cover a specific ‘region’ in terms of people’s taste, this one obviously going for the southern rock feel, either way appreciate ya! Blackfoot was one of the loudest concerts I ever saw.

Yeah the best Blackfoot song ever recorded. Lots of influences coming straight from the grave made that happen. This is the song in the era that for a minute turned every southern rock fan head. So well done and respectful to Lynyrd Skynyrd. I'll never forget how badass this was when released.

Your comments about the drum intro jogged my memory because now I remember thinking the same thing when I first heard it years ago when it first came out, i.e., that it seemed awkward and could have been better, and the timing seemed a bit off too. After hearing it a hundred times since then, I don’t really notice it that much anymore - my brain detours around the flaws. But now that that you’ve called attention to it, now I can’t unhear it - again. 😄
I think you nailed it, it is “OK” to do a song like free bird. But their song package was only “OK” and resulted in an OK production. I bet they got a lot of live-performance-miles out of this song though. I much preferred Train Train (with intro) a more gutsy, gritty production. Keep Rockin’!

I don't think I've ever heard this song before. Seemed kind of cliche to me. Not my thing. I'd listen to something else from them since I know next to nothing about Blackfoot, but this one didn't do it for me. Rock on, dudes. 😎🔥🤘
Greg Walker and Rickey Medlocke both were in Skynyrd in the early days. Rickey wrote and sang songs on Skynyrds first and last album. Another bit of trivia. Rickey Medlocke, the lead singer, only has one lung. Big fan of both skynyrd and Blackfoot.
Even though I had this album in high school, I genuinely forgot how it is. What was 'Freebird" before Freebird? I don't think there really was one. Part of Freebird's success is it came out when album oriented rock radio came out. IMO I don't think Freebird would have been as popular if it chopped down for top 40 radio. I'm probably forgetting something, bt I'll attribute that to whiskey.

I used to work at an AM\FM station in the 70s and you are correct. When albums like Zepplin came out, we could debut a whole side at once. Some songs were only made for long format. Some examples of songs ruined songs on the AM format, almost every Doors song, In.a.godda.da.vida was much better long version. FM really opened up a lot of groups who were able to explore a song more. Probably the biggest winners in that would be Pink Floyd or Rush.

This band is from my hometown Jacksonville Fl.....also home to Lynyrd Skynyrd & Molly Hatchett. “Train,Train” is their biggest hit.....mean electric harmonica playing in this song
Yes! This is really good Southern Rock. Thanks for circling back. I only know a couple songs from this band, but they are sooo good. Always reminded me of Skynyrd, as brought up. You are correct about hearing them live. Saw them in a small venue in '81. Def Leppard was the warm up band and Blackfoot made them sound like a garage band. They were loud and the guitars screamed the whole show. My friends and I just stood speechless at the end, trying to process what we had just seen.

Rickey Medlock, the lead guitarist was an original member of Skynyrd and played on their first recordings that were released after the plane crash. He was the second drummer at that time. He is now a member and plays the Alan Collins part on Free bird in their shows.

One of the many issues I have with today's music is most songs are in maximum volume, maximum energy with no dynamic range. Just because a song is loud and fast doesn't mean it's not boring.
"train train" by Blackfoot is a must. If you want to hear some great harmonica react to it. To me"freebird" is the ultimate southern rock jam, the others just used it as inspiration ☮️
It’s been more than 20 years since I heard this album and still listening to it. This song is one of the best one with diary of a working man for me.
