  • So we did a thing - The Mighty RZ vs the totally uneconomic GW.
    120mm battle of the beasts with Madison at Rabbit Island, Nelson, New Zealand.
    We both used Fuji Pro400H and although the focal lengths were different it made for pleasing results.
    Filmed with Fuji X-H1 using Fujinon 16-55mm f/2.8 and Asahi Pentax Super Takumar 50mm f/1.4
    Edited in FCPX.

    yo this video was kinda funny. "appitcha" 😂 - also 5.25 per photo on the GW is nuts!

      @hypecamera  4 года назад +1

      Haha thanks - we were poking fun at our kiwi accent 😂😂 And yep - quite expensive down here at the bottom of the world - I bet you could do it cheaper in the US at a commercial lab. And even cheaper over bulk processing if you do it yourself.

    Nice to see the GW690 system getting some love. 8 shots sounds expensive at first but it has helped me with being so much more intentional with my photography. Great video!

      Yeah I absolutely agree! It's definitely got me being more intentional with my shot selection and I've even noticed a trickle down effect to my every day commercial work and how my mindset is changing towards it. Always a good thing - Thanks Justin!

      Thanks man!! The extension rings for the matte box didn’t arrive in time for shoot day - would’ve solved the harsh purple lens/nd filter flaring near the end of the clip on the beach. Whoopsies 😂😂

    A few alternate conclusions.
    The Mamiya 67 is not ideal in the field but lenses can be very sharp and contrasty and the kit excellent for meticulously framed images particularly in conjunction with a tripod where dealing with the rotating back, the dark slide, independent shutter cocking, manual film advance, manual metering , and waist level focusing method are potentially less intrusive than when walking around taking quick (relatively) hand held shots.
    The Fuji is not the least bit beastly. Lighter than a Nikon 810. Shooting with it offers the identical framing as a 35mm SLR and it is a fixed lens so quite straightforward in use, a MF RF point and shoot. 8 (69) vs. 10 frames per roll on a 67 is not that big a deal.
    400ASA film in full sun is not only unnecessary but inconvenient when a larger aperture is desirable to control DOF and the max shutter speed is slow- 1/400 for the RZ 67, 1/500 for the GW 690 ll - glacial compared to modern cameras. ASA 50 or 100 would have allowed for increased IQ and more subject separation. At least you were not using 800 Portra, the RUclipsr's favorite.
    Metering off the content is highly problematic when shooting film unless your content is 18% grey. At the price point for film these days pick up a small light meter -I use a simple Sekonic L 308 model- and a grey card and every frame no matter what the content , will be spot on.

    • @hypecamera

      Wow - Thank you Dennis, wisdom abounds.

    Hi from Sydney... GW has been my favourite for years now, loved your personalities guys and i am big fan of your kiwi accent (esp. the guy shooting with the 6x9) well done both...liked the colour grading of you video too... I have the Sekonic L358 but I am guessing the light most of the times and also use my phone for metering BTW what app do you use ?...

    • @hypecamera
      @hypecamera  3 года назад +1

      Haha - thanks man! You can probably hear us across the ditch lol! Phone metering is underrated - I used one from the Apple app store called 'Lux' but I haven't been able to get it working in the last few months, unsupported now maybe? I've since switched to one called 'Lightmate' - free on the app store. Does the trick for me (Luke - GW user). Dean (Mamiya guy) uses 'Pocket Light Meter' - it's $18.99 NZD though. After filming this clip I managed to find and buy a Minolta Auto Meter IV F. They're super good and easy to use - apparently a pretty solid reputation too. Accurate enough! Check out the Leica vs Leica clip. We use it solidly in that one.

    • @hypecamera
      @hypecamera  3 года назад

      @@mnickdell8104 Hahaha - thanks man. Yeah I'm experimenting with different soundscapes around perceived 'camera vlog' style tracks. I want to add my own flavour to it, music I like and tunes I'm drawn to vs what you'd expect to hear in a Leica or Leica-esque clip. I mean, I'm a massive fan of synthwave and 80's inspired movie soundtracks but even then I think it may push the envelope a little too far lol!
