You seem to have quite the collection, I hope we get to see it in the near future !!

I just picked up a 5J with a fender tank. I agree, I makes a nice arm rest. It had hydraulic controls on the right fender which makes it very hard to get on and off. My other two J series have seat tanks.

Glad to see you revive/save one from the recyclers.
I think you need another J. I have one I would sell, but you might not want it, because it runs and steers!
Hope you can come out to Tulare April 19-21 and see all of the D4s and #40 scrapers in action. Even better if you could arrange to have your dads(yours) there too! We even have Glen Gs coming out to play! Seat tanks seem to have less leg room; side tanks great for implements. Everyone has their preference.
Great videos. Thanks for sharing! “Gee”

Nice meeting you (May 2024). I'll have to find the time to get a machine or two out to the shows. Perhaps next year.

I farmed with a fender tank D2 5U for over 20 years, it was fine because I knew no different.
Now I have 2 D4's with seat tanks, I got a 7U with fender tank and 4S blade. I find it complicated to get on and off. I put a seat tank on a 5J D2 mostly for mowing and raking. Now in old age I have trouble boosting up off the seat to get off. With no U series air cleaner to grab the fender tank might provide help. All in all I think I prefer the seat tank, 75% appearance and 25% function.

Yes, I think a seat tank would be a better choice with a blade. I’ll probably go with a fender tank simply because the existing seat tank has so much damage. I’ll need to swap fenders as well to accommodate the side tank.

I like a side tank for precisely the reason you describe. If you are going do drawbar work, as opposed to mostly dozing, the visibility is beneficial.

It will be a drawbar tractor. However, I have two other options.
      1) PTO with paper pulley for the rock crusher.
      2) rear mounted BeGe hydraulics for the little Murray scraper.

My d2 has the fender tank, at first I wanted to change it, but it has really grown on me after I drove around with it. I see a lot of seat tanks crushed in because of backing into things. My d2 has the battery box, fender tank and tool box, there is barely enough room to step into it! One disadvantage of the fender tank, the pony start rope is a bit more difficult to wind up in the little space.

Difficult to juggle three items on just two fenders. I really like the fender tank and toolbox combo. Add a battery box and that pushes one to a seat tank solution. Best of luck with yours.

Looks like I'm all set. I was able to find a good one from Florin Tractor with the correct 4B666 block. Thank you.
