Good job on explaining in detail how to operate that D2. You sure have a knack for making clear explanations of whatever it is you are discussing. I really enjoy your videos. Thanks for taking time out of your busy schedule to make them.
Back in the early 90s I had in total about 10 days operating a British Army D6D. Automatic transmission, a blade that angled and tilted, but essentially worked the same way. Some of the best fun I've had with my clothes on.
I laughed way too hard at that last sentence
You are a very good instructor, and cameraman. I have a D2 I am about to make run and use around the property here...and had no clue of how to run it. I do now, thanks to this video. Finally a decent home produced video....
I was always looking for a description, thank you!
You are an easy instructor to follow. Basic mechanical knowledge helps if you would like to operator a piece of equipment, that with these instructions should have you 'dozing in no time.
I really like those D2 Cat. Dozers. My great uncle's D2 was the second tractor I learned how to drive. I was 8 years old. The first tractor I drove was our 1940 John Deere H. Also that same year. I was almost too short to use a foot clutch so the tractors with the hand clutch were good. The fact that the D2 is so compact was just my size and I didn't have any trouble using the brakes. My uncles D2 was made during world war 2 and was used by the Army. He had been in the Army corps of engineers and operated a D2 a lot. He was a farmer in Michigan all of his life. When he returned from the war the first equipment he bought was 2 Framall Hs. I think I was about 5 when he hauled that old D2 home. It was pretty sad looking but he wanted it because it was just like the one he drove in the war. 3 years later when I first drove it it looked like new. Of course it is painted olive drab green just like it was when the army had it. My Uncle has been gone for 30 years but the Cat D2 still lives on the farm, with my cousin and still looks like the day he finished restoring it.
Mighty handsome little machine!Greetings from Quebec Canada.
Howdy!
I enjoyed this a great deal. When I learned how to steer, going down a steep hill, by doing what seemed backwards, I thought I was big stuff.
Thank you, Squatch! I am glad there is not a test! I am not really familiar with Caterpillars, so that seems pretty complex. Can’t wait to see your next video driving the D2. 🚜👍
Didn’t mean to sound negative . Just an old operator joke. I learned to operate on a HD5 Allis. When I was learning, my dad would tell me that if the manufacturer wanted you to grade in reverse they would have turned the blade around. Love your videos. Keep up the good work !!!!
Squatch, great video. Not sure why there's complaints about the audio, I thought the video looked and sounded great. Really appreciate all the effort you put into these videos that takes up time you could actually be accomplishing projects.
Best info and overview I have seen for most types of equipment, well done and thank you.
That is am impressive video. It may save thousands of dollars in clutch and brake repairs. Also I really don't see much dirt on that machine, especially for one at work. There are 6-volt LED headlights if someone wanted more light for night work. If they were installed with quick connectors like the work lights, returning things to stock would be easy. I suggest this as an alternative to a 12-volt conversion. Sometimes 6-volt systems can be beefed up instead of being replaced. I hope this helps to keep some good machines work as they were meant to, as this video does. Thanks.
I love this old kacking mistress! Great video for part 1! Good work !
I found with my crawler, when going down a steep hill, to steer right you release the left steering clutch. This speeds up the left track and the machine turns right.
Who would give that a thumbs down! Very educational!
Dirty? Thats a clean machine!
VERY clean! Sanitary!
Very informative! Can't wait for part 2
Thank you so Much ! For doing this Video, for me it is the most helpful video. I bought a D47U this summer with same set up. This video you made helped me so much understanding what to do and not to do for operation. Many thanks!
Wow, I can really tell the difference with your new camera. Nice, sharp resolution and good sound quality.
Yes that's how I remember my dads old D2 great old tractors
Happy Thanksgiving Squatch and Senior!
How2-D2. Fantastic title. Cool video on a cool topic. Thanks.
Great info, thanks for doing these videos sir!
Nice education on levers
Great explanation, thank you.
great job , I am glad you are doing this
I really like the audio cutting in an out of CB radio mode! :) Might have to buy you a lapel mic for Christmas. lol Thanks for the interesting video...I imagine I'm one of the viewers who requested it some time ago.
Cat cat meow meow meow that's a great looking dozer 😀😃😄😁😍😍😍😍😍 thanks for your restoreing that classic machine
great video and information thank you for your kindness
Great job as usual. Keep that ole iron running.
Excited!!!
a magnificent engineering innovation : ‘size and efficiency’ (quality of…‼️)🥂💫
👊🔥

Great video!
Great job explaining thank you. I just bought an Allis Chalmers HD5G loader crawler, I pick it up Friday! I'm assuming the controls are relatively the same concept. Thanks for the explanation on disengaging the track clutch then brakes. Didn't know! Can't wait to see part 2, keep up the great videos!
@@squatch253 Makes perfect sense! And always leave the main clutch engaged with the trans in neutral correct?
@@squatch253 Ok great thanks for the info and quick replies. I really enjoy you and your dad's videos, you guys do a great job!
Great video. Thanks
Great video, I have a 5 J and love it, my is a working machine, not has nice looking as yours but gets the job done
Great presentation. You new camera is working well.
Great video for someone who doesn't know how to operate their d2. Keep them coming Squatch really like your videos. When is Sr. Going to post another video on the H?
A Cat with dirt on it is just showing it in it's natural environment. It just doesn't look right without it.
Great video, really enjoyed learning about the controls. What is the criteria for choosing a gear? Do you ever shift gears?
Enjoyed the how to.
Great Video! I have been in a newer d6, D9s, D10r and D10Ts, so this is much different I have used a D2 or 3 but there was no clutches it used foot brakes to steer only.
great explanation
Great video again, was the D2 ever fitted with a forward & reverse lever like some of the later Cats?
Ok I got the controls down. Now I need the D2 to apply it too!!!!
That thing is comparably clean
Sanitary!
That new camera is quite an upgrade, that is a clear picture! On another note the clutch operation is quite similar to a John Deere,....just sayin'....LOL
@@squatch253 I always thought it was the other way around LOL
I never driven a bulldozer, it looks not to complicated but I guess one have to get used to the hand clutch before doing serious work, the air cleaner looks exactly like my 49 Farmall super A
That was great I would love to be able to come and drive a crawler one day I would love to get a d2 for back sloping ditches on my farm but that will have to wait but I have always wanted to drive a older catapiller dozer.
how many gears? Which ones do you use the most for grading etc. Thanks. I enjoy all your videos. Tell your dad he does a great job too.
That was perty good.
Hi thanks for showing how the controls work and how to make that D2 work
THANKS FOR THE MAN LESSON 😈
Thank you for the great video. At about the 1:15 point in the video, there is what looks like the starter switch for a Ford 8N tractor at the top left of the shifter gate. What is that?
@@squatch253 Thanks! I was wondering about what it could be since it is does not look like it's in an easy to reach spot to use as a push switch. 🙂
I don't know what year they started using them, but newer Cats have a key switch for the main battery. It uses a Cat 2 prong universal key.
Seems to me that only CAT dozers had the hand lever steering clutches as the front-end crawler loader aka hi-lifts did not, they had just foot operated left/right steering clutches plus center brake pedal for both tracks at once. On the 955/977/983, left hand controls transmission fwd/rev and throttle, right hand controls bucket. I started out as teenager on D2 and up dozers with both cable operated and hydraulic blade lift, and the 955/977/983 front-end crawler loaders aka hi-lifts. All CAT's I've operated had the same throttle detents and hydraulic float levers. That's the same from model to model and probably still is for today's modern machines. If you can operate one, you can operate them all regardless of size of machine. Only difference is today's modern equipment uses joy-stick controllers which mimic the former lever controls of the older equipment.
This guy has got talent On loan from God
FACT!
Thanks
I'd like to see you do a vid on what to look for when buying an older Cat. I'm currently in the market for an older D4 but unfortunately I am limited by my mechanical apptitude. Are the holes in shoes/pads for snow and ice?
Consider selling this D2 or do you have another in similar condition that you would let go? Been looking for a good one. Thanks
Where is the clutch lever detent located? Mine doesn't work, I have to hold the lever back to move. thanks
Maybe one day i might do a video on how to drive a Cat D4D
Not to worry if the unit is dirty , Fine to be clean for a show , dirty is a badge of earning its keep .
I didn't even think it was dirty 😂
@@tylercooper6888 I agree I thought it was clean
Thanks for the info!
Question: what was that extra lever on top of the blade control valves?
Thanks!
My old Ford 4000 backhoe has a similar setup, but uses a plunger valve. It’s called a diverter valve. On my backhoe, when the valve is pushed in, it diverts hydraulic pressure to the loader valves. With the valve is pulled out, it diverts the flow to the hoe controls.
New Go Pro looks good. Is that the D2 you picked up off a friend? Good looking crawler.
My Dad had a D2 for a number if years in the 50's (he had a contract with the county to push the local dumps' garbage over the edge...we had 7 dumps in the county back then). He trucked the machine on the flatbed of a single axle Chevy truck (2.5 or ? ton capacity). Pony started with a rope pull. I thought I remembered it having what he called a Johnson bar...a control lever that after you disengaged the clutch, you moved the lever to either the forward or back position to reverse your direction, without moving the gearshift...the trans stayed in whatever gear you were already in. Did I dream this memory up? Was there ever any such a thing on these? Thanks...BTW...the new camera is great and I love the channel!
Looking for advice for the husband...he's looking at 2 dozers a D2 or a D22 if I heard him right, both low hours, some tlc needed. Which would you recommend?
Same as my 70+ old TD 6 I HC.
Hi everyone Have a 2t d4 first time just learning I had right track come of at front roller while reversing up a steep hill, i noticed this leafspring thing had fallen down what is its function need a diagram to put together thankyou for any help.
PS it's a ex military poor thing looks like its been thru a few wars and back carnt believe it even goes at all still .
Wll done! Are/were D2 tractors available with rear power take-off for brush hogs or winches?
@@squatch253 Thank you, I will check the link
You think your D2 is dirty? Mine looks like it should be on its way to the scrap yard!
Great video! I didn't know about leaving the machine idle with main clutch disengaged would be harmful.
Squatch253 Thank you again for the great information! I will have to make sure I leave the main clutch engaged the next time I let her idle during warm up or cool down.
How about your remote hydraulics and pto control? Another good video. Thanks Toby!
@@squatch253 Thanks Toby! Great machine by the way!
Any ideas on how to get to steering clutches on froze without turning the tractor apart
Not much electrics on those old machines. Did they have optional electric accessories for them?
btw, the audio is clear but it sometimes gets a bit weird on the gopro, maybe some settings issue?
Did some googling and I guess it might be an automatic wind recording mode
and on a Fiat the clutch action was back to front to Cats and Inters. To move forward push it forward. I got put on a D 4 at a bushfire at night working the clutch on it after coming off a power shift was a sight to see
Thats one Beautiful d2 even if you say it dirty. Do you have any plans on putting a blade in the d6 and repainting it or restoring the old international dozer of your fathers??
Can you explain in more detail why the clutch should be engaged while idling
Where can I buy one in Alaska
Don't by chance know off hand which model had electric start pony motor, manual tilt blade?
hi i found a d2 4uc731 with 4730 hours any thoughts before i buy or refer me to a video and where do i find a parts list and pricing thank you
Looking at buying a D2 5U without a blade what is the length of the tractor?
Can you tell me where you get the hydrolic Linea for the blade one one seams to have mysize and use my fittings
Look around your area. There probably is a "hose shop" that custom makes hoses. If you have the hose end of the fittings and they're in decent shape, they may be reusable. That depends if they're screw together or crimped on fittings.
@@brucestarr4438 no shop around can my fitting are in great shape I think they just want me to use there's bc there very expensive wabt 220 for one hose and there fittings forget that last step I'll call my cat dealer and get the hoses cheaper
@@dakotak8437 do a web search on how to make hydraulic hoses. It looks scary at first, but if you're half way mechanically minded, you should be able to do it. Do you have any friends that work on this kind of stuff?
@@brucestarr4438 I was just gunna get the hose my self and press them in
@@brucestarr4438 I am the friend that does all the work I have an old cat d4 6u that I got from a ladie that it has been sitting for 25 plus years not running most the work was in the pony motor
Niiiiiiice! Can I come over to your house and play?
You are almost English in your sense of humour... Are you from Canada or something? :-) Please! Thank you!
Does anyone here know what type of oil the caterpillar D2 5U takes
Would like to no also
Dirty?? For a working machine you would need to add at least a bucket or two of grease and grime just to get to clean!! Dirty is when the first tool you grab is a shovel just to find what you’re looking for.
Is the master hard wired, or through a relay?
Where is the starter? How do you start and stop the engine?
You'll have to check his channel, I'd leave a link but I'm on my phone, he has a video on how to start it. It uses a pony motor to turn over the diesel engine. The big engine itself has no electric starter
Down south here, we don’t drive a dozer, we operate them
It looks easy but i'am sure it,s not,,great video.
Did I miss something ??? What happened to the 5J1113 rebuild?
@@squatch253 Thanks for the quick reply. My apologies I havn't watched ALL your videos, but do enjoy much of your content and by the way I got to see Big Boy up close and personal :). Keep up the great content
Looks spotless for working dirt.
I'm little over 6'3" Seem like all the older machines are made for guy that were 5'5" 😊
Who does this D2 belong to? Can’t be you since you been telling everyone you like the rough finish on the 113
Dirty?? apart from the tracks.. cant get much cleaner than it is....
"Pretty easy to keep track of"
🙄🙄🙄
If you can’t get it going forward then forget it
