- I dive into how the Spider-Man villain Mysterio changed my life! No, but seriously. Quentin Beck's role as a movie special effects artist inspired me 15 years ago to study film, and eventually led me to your faces right now, and I'm thrilled he's making his Marvel debut in Spider-Man: Far From Home! SPOILERS FOR FAR FROM HOME:
Did anyone else think the speech given by Quentin in the bar to his friends was similar to an award acceptance speech where he's finally giving the effects artists the credit they deserve???
Yes, completely agree, can you give a review on it?!
Actually yes, he thanked (almost) everyone and credits their name
Please make a review of it, the whole movie and movie version Mysterio.
HOLY SHIT, sorry, but that’s a really cool thing to think about. I really hope it is
Your video made me realize it during the movie, I'm writing an analysis about it right now ^^
"I didn't wanna go into an unstable career so I chose RUclips instead"

Dude, the Mysterio illusion in Spiderman Far From Home where they first battle, is literally hands down the single best scene Ive ever seen in a Spiderman movie. It was almost Christopher Nolan-esque. Truly mesmerizing. That one scene alone was worth the price of admission. Just incredible.
Yeah it was absolutely amazing, it's exactly what I was hoping Mysterio would be like.
Had my jaw dropped the entire scene
Absolutely it was incredible
Oh yeah that scene was perfection. Mysterio clobbered him. Then when he blamed Peter for the death of Tony Stark and had “zombie Iron Man” appear. That was incredible
Literally whenever I think spiderman far from home I
Think of that fight
Specifically the part in the dark messed up school hallway
I think the new Mysterio captured the message of a VFX artist who didn't get the recognition he deserved, perfectly.
In my opinion, Mysterio is one of the best MCU villains to have ever existed.
Yes! I love his chestplate on his suit, makes it look badness:D
But then marvel gives no respect to the vfx
Your grandparents are awesome.
They were!
Legend has it they are still playing that Xbox to this day.
@@NerdSyncProductions aren't you his grandfather though , jay?
@@munjee2 I can neither confirm or deny this charge.... but I do own an orginal Xbox.
That's proof enough for me
They did Mysterio so right in Far From Home. He stole the show. I guarantee you'll love it
He didn't _steal_ the show; he _was_ the show.
Eh kinda predictable but his prformance made me forget it it and i was still suprised when he ended up being a villian
Joshua Hamilton i wasn’t surprised _that_ he was the villain, I was surprised _how_ he was the villain
@@angelaphsiao you lost me
@@cludjckt_9844 he was a great villain even if the twist wasn't
Daredevil, the Netflix show changed my life. I probably wouldn’t be a writer if I never watched that show. That show literally made me the person I am today. It’s crazy how small things like a show, or a character can have such a profound effect on your entire existence.
That is great. Do you remember the moment watching it where the light bulb went on for you?
Mad Mario Watching season 1 was one of the most fun experiences of my life. I wanted more Daredevil goodness in my life, so I started watching interviews with the cast and crew. It really made me realize how much work was put into the show, but also how much fun it must’ve been to make it. I said to myself: “this is what I want to do. I want to create stories.”. It would be so cool if I could have a job that I’m excited to go to every day. One day, I decided to start writing, and it just clicked. Pretty soon writing became my go-to hobby. It didn’t matter how hard school was, or if I was having a bad day, writing always made me feel better. It amazed me that I found a way to improve my mental health, but I was actually getting work done AND having fun at the same time. That’s probably when I knew I wanted to become a screenwriter. I’ve been writing for years and I’ve only grown to love it more!
for me, it was percy jackson
Pretty sure that a Princess Bride influenced my sense of humor.
I'm the same with Man of Steel. I loved that movie so much I wanted to know what others had to say about it, so I went on RUclips to look at reviews. This led to me subscribing to a whole lot of film pundits, and now I'm in film school!
It's just so sad what they did to those VFX artists.😢
Hollywood is an ugly ugly place covered in a shitload of glitter
It was disrespectful and dismissive on multiple levels, and reflects the true attitude of the industry regarding the people who work the hardest to make movies come to life....
What did they do? Im not on the track of the oscars.
It actually made me so angry to see such disrespect. I can't believe they did that but sadly, that just seems like par for the course at the Oscars. I've seen loads of other messed up, unfair, and insulting things in the most recent Oscars (and that might just be reflection on Hollywood as a whole).
@@Argi1000 if u arent good at business u will die
Hey, so I know this video is extremely self-centered and kind of chaotic, but I thought it might be fun to see how a fun little character inspired me to be who I am today! Like I'm always trying to preach here on this channel, comics are serious media and superheroes are important! I hope this was a fun watch!
@Jayden Marvel Thanks!
Just wanted to let you know that you're not alone in thinking that the Mysterio levels are the hardest in the game. As a kid I had so much trouble in the exact same areas, and while I'm much better at the game now, due to about 100 repeat playthroughs, I still occasionally have trouble on the Statue of Liberty
(Pro Tip: When doing that section, don't jump off your web line. Just keep using the trigger to create new web lines without leaving the old ones. It's slower, but at least you won't fall 50x before you get there)
Also, I have a tradition of using the Hero Punch on the Mysterio 'Boss Fight.' Makes it much funnier in my opinion
I love this video! Everything is top notch! Your videos are the best!
That UFO swinging section is why I have never won that game, you are a far greater gamer than I. Huge fan, btw, great video!
So this is kinda a bit of 'origin story' ain't it?
So during Spiderman Far From Home *minor spoilers* when Mysterio just obtained the glasses in the bar, he launches into this bizarre expository scene where he stands on the bar counter personally thanking and giving recognition to each person that was integral to the Mysterio character. From a story/cinematic standpoint the scene feels awkward and a bit too long, Gyllenhaal's character keeps naming every person while visually we see a flashback or recollection of that individual's role. But given the meta-significance of Mysterio and how he relates to the movie industry irl, not just the in-universe spiderman, I now understand why this scene was in the movie- it was finally giving justice to the people truly making the movie magic happen, at least vicariously through the fictional Mysterio team. It was an awards ceremony, hiding within the confines of the plot. This movie was an ode to special effects artists within the industry.
And you'll also notice Gyllenhaal's character never treats any of his crew as less important than himself... even the woman that irons his cape is a role he treats with the upmost importance. And when the drone guy messes up, he gets angry. I forget the exact words used, but he explains that everyone is needed at their best performance to pull off this grand illusion. Because Mysterio (the actor) is only as real as the rest of the crew makes him to be.
Great movie.
EDIT: I also just realized one of Mysterio's first lines in the movie is "you don't want any part of this", could this also be a line subtly directed at the audience? Warning movie goers they don't want to get involved in the special effects industry? lol
but beck does actually threaten everyone in the room with death because of the one guy's screwup of not mentioning the lost drone soon enough. So he only treats them with respect when it suits him but quickly turns on them when his personal life is affected which actually could be even more meta as we see with that awards speech trying to get cut off. They appreciate the team when things go well for them but don't really care deep down. He even walks around in a damn mocap esque suit and everything is created by computers like the actual film.
"Utmost", not "upmost". Regardless, excellent comment.
Quentin.
previously I viewed that as just a way the film was showing him as manipulative and narcissistic, like they were important because they were doing things for him.
interesting to wonder which was the intention of the writers.
The Mysterio stuff is the hardest in the game. I'm good enough at games to say, no, it was not just you.
Word. I struggled too.
LOL I quit after trying those missions:p
That damn Statue of Liberty level!!

After learning what happened to the Life of Pi VFX team from this video, Mysterio now makes much more sense to me as a villain. Thanks for that.
I remember watching a ton of RUclips videos around the time Spider Man 3 came about focused on rumors of Spider Man 4. At one point I found a video where a bunch of kids were making their own Spider Man videos with action figures, and that allowed me to realize I could make videos of my own too. My love for Spider Man and his stories lead me to RUclips as well. Thanks for sharing your story, Scott.
Spider-Man is inspiring all kinds of cool people! Haha
What!? There couldn’t have been many Spider-Man videos in 2007.
Mysterio is one of my favorite villains ever, specially since he is just a normal dude with no super powers that can fool Wolverine into killing the X-Men by simply using smokes and mirrors. It is amazing. Such an underrated character.

Telling the world about the ways in which comic book characters had real, lasting impact on our lives is a worthwhile endeavor. (For me, a stuttering teenage dork, that character was Cloak...but I digress). In my youth, we comics nerds had to keep our heads down, lest we be pantsed during lunch or beaten up after school. Now, superheroes are box office gold--and some of us (like you, Scott) are left trying to explain to a surprised, confused, and curious audience how we got here, who these characters are (or were), and WHY THEY MATTER. Thanks for another great video, Scott!

When I was a child, roughly 22 years ago, I was at the grocery store with my mom. As we were shopping, I asked for a small (roughly ten inch in diameter) frozen pizza. She said yes, and I pulled it off the shell in the freezer isle. On the back of that mostly yellow box, were four rectangular (playing card sized) cut out 'cards' made into the back of it. On each 'card' was a different comic book characters. Each character picture had a brief (just a few sentences each) description of said character. And one of those pictures was the exact same as the thumbnail for this video. And, from that moment on, I have loved comic books, their characters and the animated/acted tv versions of those characters. So, in similar fashion Mysterio also changed my life. Happy to see theirs someone else, also effected by such things.
PS. l love your videos. Keep up the good work. 😁
scotty rose yeah Lunchables is what got me into Transformers

This spoke to me more than you know. Thank you. I actually got misty eyed. Because dude, I was there too. And Mysterio is my favorite Marvel villain of all time for that very reason. And many more.
It's incredible how you're able to seamlessly transition from a supervillain to topics that, on the surface, are completely unrelated and just as I forget that it's a video about a comic book character, you effortlessly call back to the villain you mentioned at the beginning. I'm always amazed at your storytelling chops, and how you can blend stories together so effectively. Keep up the great work!
This was a very real video... despite the subjects of special and visual efforts. Seriously though, I could feel how this video was very grounded to you personally, and that gave it impact.
...Also, do you have a Snorlax imprisoned behind your sofa?
Are you tellin me its not normal to keep a snorlax imprisoned behind my couch
I always loved Mysterio as Spider-Man's most reoccurring menace that I can now call a "troll". He was the bad guy between bad guys. Thanks for giving me a new perspective.
I love your videos, the quality spikes up every time! I can't binge watch them enough! Have a great day Scott!
Your web shooter's vfx is too real, I thought it was special effects at first glance😂
I've been a fan since 2013! Lots has changed, and I'm proud to see your work getting better and better. The more introspective commentary brought to the front allows a unique look into how comics affect people and why they are important culturally.
My lecturers were working for rhythm and hues for a few years before they went down.
A quote I remember one of them said to us
"no matter how big or fail a movie become with the breathtaking VFX that you give your all, you won't get any bonus or extra nor does the company that employs you. The box office number or sale won't change anything, we get paid when the jobs are done and won't be contacted until the next job, as does the cycle continue."
Really hope FFH reveals he has a backround in film. If he doesn't, that would be kind of upsetting, as it's a really important part of the character for me.
*cough* Mandarin *cough*
I feel like they would, what sounds more like a badass film idea than a lone wanderer from a dead alternate earth teaming up with one of the greatest heroes of this new found land? Mysterio would totally do that
Niop Tres
*cough* still an inaccurate version of the mandarin that didn’t fix anything *cough*
Niop Tres
Rewatch all hail the king. The description of the Mandarin they gave us isn’t even an accurate version of the Mandarin. “A 500 year old war lord” come on dude.
Niop Tres
Ok? So you don’t want comic accurate adaptions of characters? I get that it’s kinda early to judge, but you shouldn’t expect me or anyone else to apologize to Marvel or somehow stop complaining about a big misstep they took with Iron Man 3. Fan service won’t really fix their mistakes.
This was a really great video and amazing to get more backstory on your path
Thanks, Roberto! ❤️
Didn’t know you would be here Roberto
And that’s why this channel is one of my all time favorites on RUclips. The writing, presentation and topics are just so interesting and well put together!
EXACTLY! I know im 2 years late, however I love Mysterio and his whole character, backstory, and everything about it. I found you out by your Scooby-Doo videos, however I'll definitely know you now as the guy who additionally loves Mysterio.
This channel is EXTREMELY underrated. You deserve more subscribers. Great video as usual Scott. 👍
I totally agree that VFX artists can (and do) put so much into their work, so also saying that no future Doc Occ will have as expressive robo-arms if done digitally is kinda dissonant to that ideal. Digital animators have been able to create incredibly expressive and realistic characters and elements. It bothers me that so many people think that a digital effect is somehow lesser, non-artistic, or cheating...
This isn't to say that practical effects aren't incredible as well, but one isn't inherently better than the other. Let's give props to all effects that bring fantastical elements and stories to life like never before.
Always love seeing an underrated villain have such an impactful impression on real people. Especially if its my boy Quentin Beck! Awesome vid!
Mysterio is just such a cool character and I'm so happy that hes finally getting the recognition he deserves! The closest thing we ever got was Spider-man 2 the video game, but even then that was mostly played up for a couple jokes.
I loved Mysterio in far from home, before that he was kind of a joke, but after that he is one of my favorites
Don't get it twisted, his powers are a joke, but he has been the final boss in three SM games and all those games had Carnage in them, which indicates that he's a dangerous villain.
_I came for the video on a Spidey Villain, Stayed for a mini lesson onn VFX Effects Industry._
P. s. Scott you should work on you accent more 😏
I don't know man, I thought that accent was pretty good! If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
That opening got me I loved it the cinematography is amazing
I'd love to see a video on your thoughts on Mysterio in Far From Home! Jake Gyllenhaal was absolutely amazing in the part, which makes the entire movie for me, and hopefully you!
Your grandparents are awesome!
Mysterio also had changed my life for real. I was a Magician who watched Black Panther last year just for entertainment. And just after watching that i wonder what do superheros i watched in the MCU actually looked like in the comics (For real i never thought that before in my life). So then i searched that on youtube and i realize that they really looked different even their origins too. And while i was searching origins of superheros i saw in the movies i suddenly found Mysterio's origins in the recomendations. I never heard him before, but i was interested with his weirdly satisfying costume. And so i watched it and i fell in love with Mysterio right at that moment. It was because of his unique origins and the fact that he don't have any powers but used practical effect to make him look like superhero that got me. It was amazing that he is basicly a magician just like me and it made me realize that magic is not just a form of entertainment, it could be anything you want. Mysterio also changed my magic performance a lot in a better way since then. And it also made me search for more comic book origins untill i finally become a superhero fan. But it didn't just stop there, after that i watched a lot of superhero movies even those outside of MCU and DCEU, very much that i think i only watched superhero last year. Untill i finally found a video from a moviegoers channel that stated BVS is actually a good movie (back then it was the worst superhero movie in my opinion). So i watched it and it sudenly changed how i think about that movie and other superhero movies that i had watched. I become hooked with that channel untill it changed my view of movies in general. That channel changed me from only watching superheros to other genres even that i never heard before. And it also changed me from watching movies just for entertainment to watch it as a hobby and made me apreciate them more as an art and also leraning more about movies and filmaking till i become a moviegoers myself. By watching this video it made me realize that if not for Mysterio, i will never become a Moviegoers at all. So thanks a lot for making me realize it
This felt more personal than usual. Thank you for being open.

As a fan of the Spider Man 2 game and an avid gamer I can tell you that the Mysterio section was really freaking difficult. A part of me thinks part of the comedy in his defeat is how difficult his challenges were. It feels so cathartic to knock this being who has been such a thorn in your side through some of the hardest levels in the game in a single punch. Such a good game.
So after Far From Home, I thought they pulled off Mysterio really well! What are your thoughts on how Mysterio was in FFH?
On Twitter he said he was incredibly happy about it. He also called it the Mysterio movie lol.
This was also my first exposure to Mysterio. One of the many cool parts of the game. Loved that game. The Doc Ock final boss felt impossible at that time lol.

The part in Far From Home where Mysterio's working with his VFX team is one of my favorite scenes ever. It reminded me of working with Miguel Sapochnik.

You know, I actually been wanting to see you revisit the prop and effects videos. I'm sure you can find a way to have them "tie in" with whatever comic book property at the moment.
Perhaps have them as patreon goals!
Mysterio is one of my favorite villains too! I fell in love with the character while watching the spectacular spider-man cartoon.
am i glad you talked about the best spider-man game ever, to this day i still play it from time to time, and still find new stuff in it
Mysterio is my favorite villain, absolutely loved this video man.
Thanks for the super informative bit about Rhythm and Hues. I used to simply be a fan of Mysterio because I’ve always been into drama and acting and thought that a villain who just outsmarts Spider-Man with his illusions was super cool! But hearing about that VFX company, it makes sense why he does what he does. It’s wrong that Rhythm and Hues went down the way they did. It’s unfair.
Anyways, I’ve subbed. Always willing to support a fellow Mysterio fan who also happens to be a great RUclipsr who makes good content. Keep it up!
Honestly man, you've been doing great recently with the writing and general feel of your videos. Keep it up
When you said about a man in a fishing bowl I don't know why I expected it to be about your love of aqua man and not your love of mysterio , well anyway been anticipating this one for some time now
Even though it's right in the title?
From Mysterio to Visual Effects to Film School to RUclips. What a journey it has been and it was amazing to watch in this video! Thanks for telling it to us Scott and thanks for bringing up what seem to be serious problems in the visual effects industry, I never realized there were so many problems.
But one of the coolest things you did was highlight how a single comic book character had a chance encounter with you and then changed your life forever, leading you to where you are today. If I weren't a Jedi, I might say this was the result of a coincidence. But I am a Jedi and know all too well that there are no coincidences. You are exactly where you are meant to be and Mysterio showed up at the exact right time and place to set you on that trajectory.
So thank you Scott taking the path Mysterio set you on and thank you for making these video I always love watching. I can't wait to see what else you've got in store for the future. (And keep these personal stories coming my man, this was amazing to listen to!) :-)
I feel you, Scott. I started in VFX and ended up in radio production. Which I love but I do miss VFX.
I love all the visual effects you put into your videos nowadays, keep it up man, love the videos
Great video. Mysterio is awesome. He was handled beautifully in Far From Home

I have noticed your cinematic touches in recent videos and they definitely add to your already amazing story telling, whether about comics or yourself. Keep on making them and I’ll happily keep watching.
Mysterio's plan worked on me kinda. It took me forever before I actually knew anything about him and realized he wasnt magic or all powerful.

You should be proud of your past videos. They are the reason I subscribed to this channel. You do a wonderful job on the videos. Keep up the great work.
Ironic that the Rhythm and Hues Oscar speech also gets cut off by an ad in this video! :-D
Great video. You really made me appreciate Mysterio more than I ever have. I hope you liked him in Far From Home.
Well don’t worry, Far From Home Mysterio’s defeat was just as easy without the holograms
My god the far from home movie encapsulates so many of the ideas covered in this video, I hope Scott makes a review of that movie, this video really heightened the movie experience for me
I appreciate personal stories like this, it's nice to know how others are inspired by fictional characters, even by supervillains. And I enjoy the more cinematic quality the channel has now. Personally the only reason I am still alive today is because of Bane. This is a bit dark, but I feel it's worth sharing. I have CFS/ME, I am only awake for a few hours a day and I am in constant pain, I also sometimes experience paralysis and convulsions. Oh and my mum was abusive, so I left and I was homeless for about six months at a time when I was so sick I needed a wheelchair just to get around. I was going to kill myself, I wasn't even depressed, I just didn't see a reason to keep going. I was a burden, a waste of space, and I may be like this for the rest of my life. It may even get worse, some people with CFS die because their bodies no longer have the energy to keep their organs functioning. Did I really want to die that way? Was there more dignity in taking my own life? I was real close to ending it all when Bane, yes the Batman villain, appeared to me. Call it an imaginary friend, a tulpa, a hallucination brought on by a failing mind, I don't know, but he was there. And his message can be summed up in one word "endure". I had been thinking about it all wrong, I had thought of this illness as something to wait out, that pain leads to reward, I kept dreaming of a future I might never have. He made me realise that life is suffering, life is pain, and we must endure it, rise above it, because what else is there? I'm alive and that is a precious and fleeting gift. I've given up on the life I might have had and focus on the one I have right here and now and do the most I can with it. I felt no one really understood what I was going through, but Bane does. He knows pain and suffering and isolation, and all it does it fuel him, make him stronger. Every day I am inspired by his strength and willpower, he is unbreakable and so am I. Whatever else life throws at me, I can take it.
There are many other comic characters I love but I can't quite relate to them in the same way, I mean Captain America is great but he got a serum to cure his problems, Doom is very similar to Bane but he's got magic and machines, he's operating on a cosmic scale. But Bane is just a man, and one that is not as dependant on Venom as is commonly believed. When written well, it's his last resort, not his first. Maybe that's why I love Hardy's Bane the most, he was born in darkness, moulded by it, he didn't see the light until he was a man and by then it was nothing to him but blinding. He is broken but endures the pain, the mask supplies him only with painkillers, not some super soldier serum. His greatest strength comes from within.
So thanks Bane, I wouldn't be here without you.
Best channel on RUclips. You truly touch my heart with these nerdy superhero stuff.
