    The response to this video has been amazing so far you wonderful nerds! We cannot thank you enough! The amount of people who picked up on Skrull-Scott being an allegory for my own recent battle with Impostor Syndrome without me having to be super-obvious about it has been overwhelming to say the least!
    This was the first video I have produced using the new set/surroundings/audio set up/lighting and I appreciate you guys sticking with me while we get things optimised!
    Along with you guys watching I have so many other people to thank for their help in making this video including:
    - DKlarations who did an incredible 1950s announcer! (twitter.com/DKlarations)
    - Mydumbquestion who voiced a smug film producer!
    (ruclips.net/user/mydumbquestion)
    - TristanPEJ not only voiced a couple ofquotes about Cold War Marvel heroes, but also wrote the chunk of the video summarising the Cold War! (twitter.com/TristanPEJ)
    - DaveDJJohnson for supporting on the community side of things, and helping my plot to replace all of SCB with Skrulls! (twitter.com/DaveDJJohnson)
    - MattDraper who gave me so much info on Night of the Living Dead! (ruclips.net/user/MattDraper)
    All of the thanks! Be sure to let me know what you think of the new set up, the video, the subject and anything you can think of in the comments!

    I also liked the Skrulls change up. I actually was worried because the rest of the MCU had painted the Kree in a very dark light and I didn't think I could take a story where they were the good guys very seriously.

    I feel the need to stress something: Tolkien deeply despised *_allegory,_* and that's why he strove to not use it as a literary technique; I am using emphasis on the word "allegory," because it is exactly a conscious choice, a narrative device used to make certain implications through literature. That's very different from your work being subconsciously influenced, or your ideas emerging through your narrative.

      My main complaint with Captain Marvel was i feel like there should have been more of S.H.I.E.L.D. in it, It could really set in stone why they started hunting down superheroes in the 2000s and pushed forward project Insight.

    • @dbchoobie1924

      They even said she's "feminist hero"

    • @EpouvantailMasque
      @EpouvantailMasque 5 лет назад +35

      Eh, yes and no. People still parade it about as a gem of Feminism, because the actual identity and war plots were demoted to a subplot from malnutrition. Had the writers/directors focused more on the war subplot, maybe we would have had a more substantial film instead of two hours of ham-fisted "don't need no man" attitude.
      **Spoilers Below**
      Maybe had we seen Vers share more than 2 lines of dialogue with the rest of the Star Force, it would be a little bit more conflicting to betray them. Maybe if we had an opening scene of one of these violent uncontrollable plasma outbursts, we would see how she really actually doesn't have control over her powers, as the script suggests. The entire opening act was poorly handled, as we skipped all the important character establishing moments in favor of... snark and "dnnm."
      I've seen people say that it followed too closely to the formula and I was bored by that, but to the contrary, I feel like it missed all the important key notes of a Superhero movie. We aren't given a real character flaw that Carol has to reconcile with. She has amnesia, but that isn't a flaw, it's a conflict. We are told she's too emotional, but she is stone faced for 90% of the movie, and we hardly ever see these emotions creep out at all. She is arrogant, and snarky, and hotheaded from start to end. She may be on a different side, but she is still basically the same person in the same conflict. In contrast, Tony Stark has lived as a party playboy type with no sense of responsibility. 10 minutes in and we are faced with the consequences of his negligence to his own company, and he works to clean up the mess that his negligence is responsible for. More recently, look at Steven Strange. We aren't told he is a genius, but shown it through several scenes before his accident. The accident that could have been easily avoided, had he not been an arrogant, self-serving jerk. At the climax, he was willing to sacrifice himself for an eternity to keep the world safe.
      Carol starts as an arrogant hothead and ends as one. Fury decides to start the Avengers initiative 10 years too late, sitting on technology that could have ravished the world 20 times over. Not to mention that SHIELD is entirely woefully under prepared for the events of Thor and Avengers. Perhaps if they had instead lead with general individualism or refugees, the gaps in character might be reconciled. The Plotholes/retcons are an entirely different game all together.

    Personally, I like how your channel has developed over time, partly because it has coincided with how my interest in comics has developed. At first, you provided interesting, useful background information that made stories more enjoyable and easier to follow for a newbie.
    Now, you go into depth and detail about what the medium and its stories can actually do. I prefer your videos that are about more of the formal and medium-specific aspects of comics, but that's just because I like learning about the techniques people use to express themselves. Your in-depth analyses of stories, and how their narratives fit into broader contexts, are also really interesting, and I like that you don't just do one or the other 100% of the time. As a whole, NerdSync is such a creative, smart channel, and I love that your videos don't ever really fit nicely with typical comic videos _or_ video essays. You're making your own thing, and it's awesome. Keep it up!

      @@streetough It isn't. But painting one side as innocent and the other as tyrants very much is. Captain Marvel is not nuanced. Men were portrayed as either sexist or incompetent, and the Kree are bullying imperialists for no other reason beyond the film needing an evil to defeat. The Skrulls are portrayed as innocent refugees that did nothing wrong whatsoever. Which drags the film down to a good vs evil tale with a lower budget than Antman and the Wasp. That is not how things play out in reality. Because in real life, you will find VERY few people who are cruel for the sake of cruelty and greed. More often than not, they usually have the interests of their people in mind, or simply do cruel acts because they likely wouldn't survive otherwise. We don't get that with the other side of the conflict. They want to destroy the skrulls because we need a conflict for the film.
      Winter Soldier clearly favors Captain America, but it still showed us the other side of it. Even though we didn't agree with Hydra, we can still see and understand where their thinking originates because many people in real life think in this manner, alibet to a lesser extreme. Winter Soldier didn't portray them as evil, it portrayed them as the most dangerous type of people there is. People who think they're never wrong, and subsequently think they know what's best for everyone.

I jump in and out of watching your videos when the topics seem new or interesting to me, and I've definitely enjoyed some of your previous forays into more political material. I understand you are relaying and conveying ideas brought about by the comics and material not necessarily promoting every idea yourself, but thank you for taking the time and effort to perform this deep dive.
    I must say this has been my favorite video you've put together. Thank you for being thoughtful and realistic about how art can be both a conscious and unconscious effort to describe the world around the artist. And thank you for being willing to delve deeper into the political messages of comics, because I know in this day and age and over this medium, you are opening yourself up to a lot of criticism and antagonism. But also I want to say a good job, because it is one thing to state this information, and it is another altogether to convey this information in a fun and interesting way. It reminds me of how Dr. Suess stated during interviews that he didn't mind being "preachy" he just couldn't stand the thought of being boring.
    Keep up the amazing content! I hope I'm speaking for more than just myself when I say I hope you are willing to take chances like this again in the future.

    • @Predated2
      @Predated2 5 лет назад +1

      It's literally one of the reasons why I am so conflicted about the movie. It has very heavy, propaganda-like messages to the point where the kid literally says that her mom should be a good example for a kid(like, what 12 year old kid says or thinks like that?). And Captain Marvel being very close to Mary Sue levels of story telling didnt help. Seriously, the only flaw the movie showed was that she trusted people too easily and she literally beats the "oppressive male character" by doing exactly what he expects her to do. He literally tries to teach her something and the movie portays it as bad, even though the thing he is trying to teach her could literally help her. Not even talking about all the forced humor.
      Yet there are so many good scenes. It often felt like they changed writers in the middle of the scene. The moment the skrulls were like "hold up, we're not the bad guys here" had great comedic timing to the point where even Brie Larson was able to give me the only chuckle she ever game me. And the worst part is: due to our brains having an affinity for negativity, I will always remember the details of all the bad scenes, which feel like are a bit too overwhelming and only remember the best of the best scenes. I am fairly certain someone will try to defend some of those scenes or decisions, but the money doesnt lie. The only reason it made as much as it did, is because it was a marvel movie.

    you make the content you want to make. If it's any reassurance, I don't watch any other comic book youtubers anyway so there's no competition in my mind lmao

    I love the deeper analysis this series has evolved into.
    Another good example of red scare infiltration narrative is the Outer Limits Episode 100 days of the dragon which first aired in September 1963.

    I don't see anything wrong with having a group of skrulls as an empathetic group of refugees, but it's honestly hard to tell from just what information we're given in this movie alone whether or not that's meant to be taken as all skrulls are actually good guys, or if it's supposed to be a mix of good and bad. I mean obviously every group has good and bad elements, and it doesn't necessarily need to be hammered over our heads or anything, but I'm slightly concerned that people not knowledgeable about the comics might assume the skrulls are all good guys based on this one interaction.

      But if they do assume that skrulls are the good guys... so what? It doesn't destroy the skrulls, since comic book fans can just correct: "yeah the skrulls were good this time, but they were not in the comics". Done.

      The movie literally says that not all Skrulls are saints. Talos himself admits he did terrible things during the war. So at least we can have the Skrulls as an actual race instead of just Generic Evil Especies N° 134
