As a comic illustrator, I can definitely say that when you find a hand gesture that you like, it works its way into practically every panel. MY personal hand gesture is an open hand with the fingers splayed but the two middle fingers pressed together. It's very hard to do in real life, but it's easy to draw and ... I just like the look.

Thanks for the tribute to this artist, even if (like me) you don't agree with anything else he had to say. This was well worth the watch.

Marvel. Thalia as a child, I always assumed his boots were just socks and he kept them on under his argyles (or whatever socks metropolis reporters usually wear). It is a good job keeping the cape neatly tucked in when wearing his suit. I wondered in the opposite direction: how does he fluff it out so well when he takes his suit off, and wear does he put his clothes, especially his hat?
It’s the opposite for me, hands, feet, and basically everything isn’t hard for me to draw, but it’s hard to put it all together. Other than that tho pretty easy.
I admit I cheat when I draw hands, i have a file in my computer of just hands in difference angles and poses and just paste them into the drawings with photoshop.

Just when I was growing tired of videos explaining the nuances of comics' storylines to me audiences, cover a video with an original and interesting premise. Loved it!
They are both accessing the root chakra through this hand gesture, allows them to connect the hand energy vortex (chakra) to the root power node (red or base chakra). It is really remarkable how often comic books make explicit references like this to spiritual disciplines. They are 'super' heroes after all.
From someone who strictly enjoys comics for the nostalgic and entertainment aspects, you've given me a lot to think about and a new perspective on the artistic side of comics. Thoroughly enjoyed the video.... keep it up!
See I never have a problem with drawing hands, I have more of a problem with faces honestly. I can draw a face, but creating unique face shapes that can make a character easily recognizable are harder for me
The gesture Spidey does makes sense if you think about the double tap he has to do to shoot the webs, heuses his ring and middle fingers at slightly delayed timing so he doesn't have to do an actual double tap. One taps slightly behind the first and the index and pinky are used sort of like sights on a gun.
Great vid! Always knew about Spider-Man’s finger gestures, but not Dr. Strange. I think it’s awesome that you spent time focusing on what seems a trivial point of comic artistry, but we often see how small details make the whole image come together time and time again.

I just had to stop by and comment that I really LOVE your detailed analyses on comic book stuff to let you know. The video edition is always top-notch but the content of your studies on superhero are even better.
Ronnie James Dio claimed to be the person who introduce the horns gesture to heavy metal. He said that he got it from his grandmother, who in turn got it from the old country, where it was used to ward off the evil eye (demons, sickness). I usually think of it with the back of the hand to the viewer, but when he did it, it was palm forward, like the Hindu gesture that Scott comments on. And now that's a thing you know.
Ditko wasn’t Jewish, he was of Slavic descent, and the symbol associated with rock music (which has the thumb placed over the middle two fingers, not extended away from the palm) can be traced back to Ronnie James Dio taking over as the second lead singer of Black Sabbath. Dio wanted something to do with his hands during concerts that would fit the darker tone of the music they performed (compared to what he was singing as the lead singer of Rainbow) so he drew on something from his Italian (Sicilian?) heritage. In the folk magic traditions of the region, that gesture was thought to both ward off and control the Evil Eye.
Ronnie James Dio did the same hand gesture ultimately creating the devil horns as we all know it in the rock and metal world. He said his mother did it alot when he was young to ward off evil spirits and thought it was something that went well with the music he was singing.
It makes sense when you actually think about it: Spideys spidergesture resembles a spider. Dr. Strange's hand gesture resembles the Satanic/Wikia symbol for devil, Devil of course being associated with *magic.*

Ronnie James Dio claimed to be the person who introduce the horns gesture to heavy metal. He said that he got it from his grandmother, who in turn got it from the old country, where it was used to ward off the evil eye (demons, sickness). I usually think of it with the back of the hand to the viewer, but when he did it, it was palm forward, like the Hindu gesture that Scott comments on.

Ditko wasn’t Jewish, he was of Slavic descent, and the symbol associated with rock music (which has the thumb placed over the middle two fingers, not extended away from the palm) can be traced back to Ronnie James Dio taking over as the second lead singer of Black Sabbath. Dio wanted something to do with his hands during concerts that would fit the darker tone of the music they performed (compared to what he was singing as the lead singer of Rainbow) so he drew on something from his Italian (Sicilian?) heritage. In the folk magic traditions of the region, that gesture was thought to both ward off and control the Evil Eye.

Ronnie James Dio did the same hand gesture ultimately creating the devil horns as we all know it in the rock and metal world. He said his mother did it alot when he was young to ward off evil spirits and thought it was something that went well with the music he was singing.
It makes sense when you actually think about it:
Spideys spidergesture resembles a spider.
Dr. Strange's hand gesture resembles the Satanic/Wikia symbol for devil, Devil of course being associated with *magic.*

I don't know, I feel you can idolize Steve for his art and still disagree with him on his moral/political beliefs.
Musee Rodin was also a big proponent of how hands can be sometimes be more expressive than faces. He did a great deal of sculptures that were just hands.
