Superman IV: The Quest for Peace is a bad movie, but it definitely has a lot to say about atomic weapons as DC’s Man of Steel destroys all nukes on the planet before fighting a silly villain named Nuclear Man created by Lex Luthor. And although it’s clear where this film and Christopher Reeve stand on nuclear warfare, Superman wasn’t always adamantly against the Bomb. Throughout his comic book history, the Man of Tomorrow championed the power of nuclear weapons. Allow me to analyze this topic in the form of an excruciatingly detailed video essay!

This was brilliant!
Also, imagine having to go on TV and sincerely reassure people with the sentence, "It will not destroy gravity."
you say that, but CERN people had to reassure that "LHC will not engulf world in a black hole"
@@daxiomus Well, the Large Hadron Collider could create a tiny black hole. It would just decay before it could actually cause problems.
That's a little bit more reasonable than a nuclear bomb disabling gravity.
You gotta give it to the guy, though. Nuclear bombs really didn't destroy gravity or vaporise the water or any of these imaginary feats he mentioned
@@mar_speedman
Hahahahaha, remember, those were Fat Man nukes, which were nothing new. He knew because we had already set them off.
The ballsy scientists were the ones that were worried that the first nuke at Trinity would set the atmosphere on fire. They still Set It Off
Some people will never be scientist
the Bikini Islands and the bomb going off was actually the inspiration for where Spongebob lives, Bikini bottom. you even see it in the beginning, it was used as an answer to "Why are these fish intelegent?", they're mutants.
Sweet
Yh, the fish themselves where supposed to be mutants, but they took a chill pill when it looked a little too edgy for kids
Huh interesting.
i originally wrote a whole part of the script about America's atomic culture and how the name for the bikini was taken from these tests as well. These tests inspired a lot of things in culture.
nice pfp
funny thing is, Nuclear Man is a more appropriate name for Superman. Everything about him is radiation-related.. one kind of star powers him up, another depowers him, and radioactive rocks hurt him depending on what he's charged up with..
Yes! I wrote an entire section of this video about how Nuclear Man and Superman are weirdly reversed in this movie, but I cut it out because it felt like I was rambling and the video was long enough already, haha. But yes, I completely agree!
Ahh the tyranny of pacing. God knows the Superman films experienced that.
This is why NerdSync is legit.
Regardless, each human displays the same powers such as Superman, but on a lesser scale. We do absorb Sun's energy and we are strongly dependant on it. Ka'El just uses that energy more efficiently than an average Earthling does.
I think Kryptonians use sunlight for a bit more than creating vitamin D, metal
@@KairuHakubi to be fair tho, they have a red sun, so the solar power of a yellow sun would probably affect them differently. Also, out sun will eventually turn red, so if we survive to that point and evolve and go to a yellow sun, maybe we'll have superman powers?
"Imagine one going off in a city like... Metropolis."
Yes, I sure am glad none of those super villains that have the resources to get their hands on anything for plot reasons haven't thought of this. I mean, just imagine if Joker did this! Heh heh...
Joker sings the hook "hoes mad" (x24) in the after life while superman goes insane.
Even more, imagine if he somehow tricked Superman into doing it for him... yikes
Since Superman and Nuclear bombs is the subject of this video, I urge you to go read a wonderful bronze age story from from 1984 titled, "The Day The Earth Died" (Superman # 408). A very mature take on the issue where Superman suffers night time anxieties caused by the Nuclear arms race and decides to get some air. He ponders over the question of where he should stand with regards to the matter in question. Shoud he intervene, should he take a back seat? Beautiful story be Paul Kupperberg and absolutely gorgeous art by the legendary Curt Swan.
Good suggestion! Thanks!
@@NerdSyncProductions Pleasure. :)
@@paladinPraveen Amazing suggestion bro that's just a perfect thing to check out for this video if you want to learn more about nuclear bombs.
@@Spider-Fan006 Happy to be helpful. :)
I'm not from America so I don't know their opinion of the bomb during those times but I can say that here in South East Asia it was 'a terrifying hopeless moment' to quote my grandfathers and grandmothers.
Sadly they don't have anything that provides comfort other than each other.
I'm sorry your grandparents had to live through that time. I have no idea what it felt like to anyone on either side. As someone who was born in America (I believe I'm 2nd gen?) it makes me sick and uncomfortable to think about what my country has done to others just to win what was pretty much a petty squabble within the grand scheme of things. I believe they went too far in retaliation for what Japan did, and I hope that your grandparents don't (or didn't) harbor any negative feelings towards us.
I was in Afghanistan, and I saw the night sky, the juxtaposition of the chaos around my little base and the calm sky, in a way laughing at our petty squabbles. Makes you think, why?
If only we spent more money going into space and solving climate change, we'd probably have homes on other planets and be much better off.
@Everette Bradfute -- Hey, tell me... While you were in *Afghanistan,* did you happen to see the wide, expansive fields of poppies, wildflowers, growing from horizon to horizon? Were they beautiful to behold? Did you take pictures or video?
I'm just asking because that place is supposed to be the number one source of heroine in the world. A substance refined from those flowers. For the past 17 years or so, no one has shown me a single photo of those poppy fields. Only rocky jagged peaks and flat waterless desert. Hmmmm....
You should write a poem around this idea. If you don't feel like you can, find someone to help you. It's a beautiful image that should be read by as many as possible.
The sunrises and sunsets in Iraq gave me the same feeling.
I was reinvigorated with space when I was overseas. No ambient light to drown out the stars.
The quality of these videos is so good! Y'all I'm screaming!
Hahaha, thank you so much, Kupi!
These videos are so professional, but as a teacher promoting comics to early teens I urge you to keep it clean. We don’t need the “dick” joke unless it is very clever and punny. Your content measures up without the tape measure. Keep up the thoughtful work.
@@shavec Actually, I quite liked it. It's funny, it's relevant and it got a giggle out of me. Sometimes more 'in your face' humour just works. That's just my take on it tho lol
I can't believe Frank Miller wrote something so emotional. DK did an amazing job reading those panels, too, I actually teared up.
As usual, the production quality is top notch. Fantastic video, Scott! And, as usual with your videos, I learned a lot about comics history. Keep up the good work!
Thanks so much, Raymond! I appreciate the kind words!
Agreed Raymond huge high quality as always and Scott's knowledge in Superheroes and compassion for others is tremendous I've always love watching RUclipsrs who are kind and friendly to their fellow man then the toxic ones like that Amazing Lucas guy.
This video actually solved something for me.
I was trying to reinvent Superman, to find a bridge between the ideal and almost inhuman paragon of justice and the gritty soul torned tortured version of the recent movies. I wrote a storyline that allowed him to be both human and super but I lacked one crucial thing to make it all make sense: motivation.
In my story Clark is a gentle giant at first, but I didn't really know how to transition him from an unassuming guy unwilling to bear too much responsibility to a hero who would try to better the world in a purely altruistic way. My first idea was to let his adoptive parents die of a natural disease, something he could do nothing about, but I felt this was more a way to make him realize he couldn't win every battle than a true motivation.
This video gave me the idea. Clark would eventually fall into a form of apathy, going through the motions unable to feel civic rights because he was so different and immune to the needs other felt. He would seek refuge and excitement in impossible situation such as traveling through space, exploring the depth, swimming in volcanoes, doing things only he could do. Feeling the world would take care of itself anyway.
But then he would witness and be engulfed in a nuclear blast. This is what would eventually shape him into Superman, witnessing both the power of the human race and its ability to produce horrors. The need for people, for everyone to grow consciences, especially people with such a destructive power. This is what would transition him from a good guy without a care in the world to a virtuous hero, this is the motivation he needs to put so much effort into being a good guy, a moral icon. The sight of a nuclear blast, and the thoughtlessness of people over it.
Perhaps that's also what will motivate him to go to the Daily Planet, they covering the bomb as the scandal it was and not the splendid act to peace it wanted to be advertised as.
Oooh, this is interesting!
That's actually a really great idea
that's what superman IV should have done
Brilliant 👏 👏 👏 🥰
Whos voicing superman? Holy crap it's like how id imagine golden age him. He sounds like hes in a radio show
Sounds like derick
@@Lumos89 it is DK. And Ricky voiced Lex Luthor.
Yes it sounds exactly like DK doing a super man voice

Why does this feel like a nerdsync and fallout crossover
RIght?
Haha, I've never played any of the Fallout games, but I've always wanted to dive into the first two at least!
NerdSync maybe you should cover the Spider-Man PS4 game at some point. Or Injustice or mortal kombat vs DC or Marvel vs capcom or any super hero game heck even Overwatch would be cool
is the quest for peace the seeds of injustice? just 30yrs later and mutated? probably not.. great video and excellent improvements in production value!
I want to see Henry Cavill's Superman go on into Injustice. He's just off kilter enough to transition smoothly into that fractured storyline.
injustice was likely inspired by justice league and "A better world" episode.
BEST SENTENCE EVER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
“In times like these, those, I mean, some find comfort in superheroes, fantastic characters, who can show up just when they’re needed, and solve complicated problems in just a few pages. I Know I Do, and maybe you do too…”
I understand that Scott is frustrated when a video doesn’t do as well as he thinks they should, but when he mentions a video that “none of us saw” it cheapens the videos. I have personally watched every single video on this channel at least twice, and I think he is a wonderful creator. I just wish he wouldn’t let his frustration lead into the videos. He is funny, intelligent, and makes great and entertaining videos.
I just wanted to make a joke. I'm not actually frustrated at all. It was a funny way of me saying "if you haven't seen this video, go check it out after this!"
NerdSync. We can see how hard your work on these and we also like seeing up you succeed. Maybe try a less self deprecating approach and more of a challenge to the audience. Something like " hey, not too many of you watched this video, you should really go check it out". :)
@nerdsync I liked the joke. Felt meta and an inside joke for people like myself who actually watched the video. Makes me wanna watch it again! Love your work Scott, keep it up!
Great work! As a kid it was the only Superman movie I owned in VHS, and I loved it! Seeing your video, I think it influenced me subconsciously in pursuing a career as a biologist.
PHENOMENAL! You handled this topic with tact and grace, and you can /feel/ the extra love and effort you put into this video. I'm so, so glad you're able to continue putting out such heartfelt, well researched content. Thank you!
This video is absolutely fantastic Scott! A masterpiece! Excellent detail, humour, creativity, commentary, profundity found in the material, and your soft, chubby cheeks have never looked better, even with the dirt and cut. Major props dude!!!
Hey, I watched that flash video twice.
Me too I love the flash

I have way to much time on my hands
Well then clearly I love you all! Haha
Superman's white outfit in that comic strip is rather.... revealing
He is a Super man
The one with Hitler? Yeah, I believe it was from a magazine, not a comic, and they had limited printing colors.
Great gams, Supesie baby!
Given your love for Aquaman, and the fact that you did this video I could totally believe you wrote that fanfic Scott.
Don't tell anyone, but I have a whole folder of Aquaman fanfic 🤫

Scott, this is easily your best work yet my man, almost brought me to tears at the end. Keep doing what you do brother.
.... uh... watching this video just before going to bed was not my best idea.... But, I really loved the one world comments near the end. It was both beautiful and sad. This video was awesomely done.
I tried really hard not to end it on a bummer note. Hopefully, the overall message was one of hope. Fitting for Superman!
A well researched look into the history of Superman and his relationship with atomic weapons. It was interesting and chilling to go through the different ages i.e. bronze/silver reactions to the bomb and how they incorporated it. Bronze Superman championed it a a peace determent. While TDKR shows the horror of the bomb, as it nearly kills the symbol of truth and justice. Superman is forced to steal life from nature to save himself, question of the latter is, is that a 'super' act?
Of course ending where I believe Superman should stand, as an outsider protecting his home. Whether by words or by actions.
Scott, I think you've hit your peak. There is NO WAY you can top this one. As I say with every video, but then you somehow manage to do it. Keep em coming Scott!
damn right, his teen titans and dark phoenix videos were amazing to!
this is the best thing ive seen in a long time. Chilling.
Thanks so much, Debashish!
36:14 “Ladies and gentleman and friends beyond the binary...” Hey, that was neat
Yeah, I don't typically jump into all the sjw stuff - but I do like to be respectful, and I thought that was neat.
C W Like it wasn’t even forced or anything. It’s showing respect and inclusion I suppose in the simplest of ways, just 3 words added to a common greeting. Much appreciated.
I always wondered how you would work in non-binary into that phrase, and he did it smooth as hell.
Might be better without the first "and".
I really like the addition of voice acting from other channels for comic creators and characters in this episode and the Marv wolfman one
I've loved all your work, but the amount of set dressing and cinematography astounds for this one in particular. Keep up the excellent and informative work!

this video honestly made me feel a ton of emotions, it was an amazing video and somehow it all was about superman 4
YES! New Nerdsync vid can't wait!!

I LOVE IT! Amazing video so interesting !
Great video! The parallel between Chris Hadfield and Superman’s words were a very interesting note to end on
I love these kinds of videos - examining the socio-cultural context in which comic books/media were produced and how the texts reflected the anxieties of their contemporary society. I ABSOLUTELY watched your Flash vid and loved it. Also the Wonder Woman one. That was pretty dope.
Point being that please keep doing in depth analysis vids like this
You are so underrated, the quality of your videos astonishes me, please keep up the good work
I was so hoping you would include that Morrison excerpt, it’s such a wonderful piece of writing.
The writing in this one was outstanding. Some of your best work yet, Scott!
Thank you for making this. Information like this needs to be heard throughout life, and sometimes you learn it to late before you grow up and gather an opinion.
Hi Scott! Just going back through all these great videos while I'm stuck in Quarantine
You know scot your production and content have become top notch, congratulations
Thanks for the video! I think I'm going to tell my Sci Fi in Film professor about it. He LOVES 40s-60s sci fi, especially those tackling issues of nuclear war. I think he'll enjoy this too.
Every time I realize that I will probably die without seeing the Earth from space, I get really sad. It must be the most amazing thing to witness.
13:41 I'm not an explosive expert, but uh, dynamite isn't TNT. They're entirely different things.
They both make-a da boom though, right?
I keep forgetting that dynamite contains nitroglycerin, not trinitrotoluene. Nice catch there!
That one song has lied to me.
Yeah. And I now remember a claim I heard from "The Return Of Zorro", that nitroglycerin is "Thirteen times, more powerful than gunpowder." .
I don't whether that claim is true (or, "corresponds with reality" - Paul Herrick, Think with Socrates: an Introduction to Critical Thinking), cuz it came from a movie🎥, which people have often taught me to doubt, but if it "corresponds with reality", then I both think it might help this discussion, and I like the quote a lot, so I decided to mention it here.
C’mom, it’s obvious that accuracy is not a premium on this channel
You deserve a standing ovation ♥
Great job, Scott.
This was beautiful, Scott! Very poignant and well-produced. And I *did* watch that Flash video so ::blows raspberry::
That modern comic with the atomic bomb, when he recovered using the solar power of plants etc? That was gruesome, THAT would make a great Superman movie

This video was amazing as all NerdSync videos are! Excellent editing, effects, script, the lot! Also, don't worry about being too serious, we can handle it!
This is one of your best videos yet Scott, well done!!
So... nobody ever comments on how he never actually searches for any nukes. He just makes the announcement and then trusts that all the countries of the world will launch them, and when Luthor's goes up, he kind of looks at it like "Zut alors, I have missed one." and then tosses it on the pile and shrugs, "I guess that's all of them." Then he tosses them into the sun. I mean, any line of dialogue, "I couldn't see any more nuclear missiles", or "I can't smell any more plutonium on the planet" or "that's all radioactivity accounted for"... anything. Even just showing him grabbing the missiles instead of them launching and him just passively waiting for them would have been better.
Great job on the lighting/color grading & make up. Also, well done on merging IRL history with comic history.
I loved the creative and thoughtful approach to this video!
You found much deeper meaning in Superman 4 than anyone else ever has. If you could do that for an Adam Sandler, Rob Schneider, or Pauly Shore movie...well, let's face it. You can't do the impossible. You're not a miracle worker, after all, and to find meaning in something it has to be there to begin with, and their films have none.
You’re the most consistently great RUclipsrs! Thank you for your hard work!!
This is some of your best stuff, man. Thanks!
Well done. This is an excellent work you have done.
I read was 'Superman a spy' (thanks Scott on the book suggestion) it's kinda cool to see Scott referencing the main title giving story in the video
Well, that almost made me cry at the end there. What a message. It really reflects how I feel about the world. We've only got one planet, we've got to take care of it somehow. Thank you Scott.
I've gotta say, this is one of my favorite videos you've made so far! The production has grown so much since I first subscribed. If you plan to make more long scale videos like this then they are well worth the wait!

Love this channel. Always great info and a unique perspective. Im glad you put the human bean juice joke in. I was waiting for it.
Great piece, very interesting and well presented video.
Thanks so much!
The most unrealistic part of that movie wasn't the flying alien of Mr. Lungren's nuclear powers. It was that the UN clapped for him when he said "I'll force you to disarm" and the governments agreed to the program. You just know the US and most other countries would hide a few under ground in a lead vault so Superman couldn't see it.
If Superman told me that story, I'd post it on r/thathappened.
I'm afraid that North Korea, Iran, Russia and USA would just respond with firering all their nukes at each other, and Supes having to fly around to catch them all.
superman has super hearing and x ray vision though
I really like this style of presenting.
The make up and set dressing all frame the video essay brilliantly and I like your humorous acting talent.
Thank you.
Truly excellent video. I loved it. I love learning history and facts and while Superman 4 has it's problems; I think the overall message is wonderful. I think it;s interesting to see how the public's perception of nuclear weapons changed over the years.
It’s obvious you put so much effort into these and it’s a crime you don’t get more views.
I was wondering. Not to seem demanding but do you think you can make a video talking about how comic books can be profound? Mainly because of Bill Maher’s recent comments about comic books and geek culture on his show. It was extremely ignorant and want someone to show how that what he said isn’t true
If it helps, he got torn to shreds in the media about it. The guy is a loon anyway, no one who matters takes him seriously.
C W yeah that does help. Thanks!
Idk, I don't want to even address Bill Maher because all he wants is attention. If I make a video about him, he wins. He got attention. Hopefully my channel in general along with many other great channels and books will speak to the idea of comics being profound without needing to address Bill Maher at all.
NerdSync Yeah I hope all you guys prove that too. Thank you!
Always love the long form videos scott
