@@SuperChaosTTV nah, he wasn't trying. He smoked herschel within one year of this. Not sure of the motivations but I've seen Green run a bunch of similar races. They were on some kind of points system here.
@@nocategories3398 that proves my point. Green wasn’t in shape for the 100. His form broke down and his backside mechanics were lacking. He didn’t have any juice left.
All those NFL's Fastest Man competitions that Darrell Green won were 60 yards long. The 100 yard dash isn't Darrell's best event. The opposite was always true for guys like Herschel Walker and Willie Gault; neither was very good in the 60 but excelled in the longer 100. Fun fact: in the very first NFL's Fastest Man Competition, Willie Gault knew he would struggle in a 60 yard dash so he lobbied to have the event extended to 100 yards but lost the appeal.
Actually really not the case since Darrell actually ran faster than Herschel in the 55, 60, 100 and 200 in his sprinting career BUT Herschel was in superior shape and this competition included about 12 different events so he held up better in one of the last events.
@@ricosuavepr1207 I guess what I really should have said is that Gault and Herschel would fare better against Darrell in the 100 than they would in the 60. Not saying they'd win but it'd be a hell of a lot closer. Gault and Herschel both hated the 60 because it's simply not their kind of race and Darrell knew it.
Was not that they did not want to feature him. They took a deep I-tailback, and and brought him into a pro set, and did not revamp their entire offense around him. Walker was dynamite if you started him 7 yards deep and ran him between the tackles. But he was stiff and ineffective without that running start and if he had to go wide.
I'd forgotten about this one. I was in HS at the time. The only other race I've seen Darrell Green lose was a 40 yard dash around age 50 to an active NFL WR and it wasn't by much
But it's funny they show this charity race, but why don't they show the worlds fastest man contest where Darrell Green beat Herschel Walker, and Darrell never lost a worlds fastest man contest. Just saying
When they had these events, shot putter and general bad ass Brian "Barney" Oldfield was interviewed before a sprint and said "I'm a few shades too light to win this event."
It is impressive, but remember this was the 100 yard dash. The 40 yard dash was a very different result and IMO, is more relevant for football players. But I agree, still very impressive.
If not mistaken didn't they already do a longer race before this and Darrell ran off and left everyone, he clearly pulled up, but Walker is a beast, the 40 is a different ball game.
Much respect to all who competed in this. Even those knowing they weren’t going to win but still displayed some athleticism. Mad respect to all of them shown here
One of the most undderated athletes of all time, Walker. As a Cowboys fan and huge fan of his, I thank him for winning the Cowboys 3 Super Bowl as well
Ummm....no. He caught Green on a bad day. 8/10 times Green wins. His best 100m is 10.08 to Walker's 10.23. There are 30 players in the NFL who have PB's better than 10.23.

@@mk5rob42 My comment was referring to in general, not just straight line speed. And we don’t know if Bo wouldn’t have beat him. If it was setup at that time my money is on Bo.
@chefmarcos well Bo was a better football player and obviously baseball. But remember Walker was very good at MMA, even as an old man. Bo was not a hundred meter guy, he was a 40 yard guy, I'd bet the house on Walker, especially after he beat Green. Green was the fastest guy in the NFL, this is the only race I've ever seen him lose.
@@mk5rob42 You're right. Bo's 100-meter time in high school was 10.44 seconds, and he ran a 10.39 at Auburn. Walker ran a 10.23 and a 10.10 (wind-aided & not official) 100-meter in Athens in 1982.
Actually that is because he came from a very humble beginning. He could not afford weights and did push-ups, sit-ups, and lifted bricks to make his gains. Amazing athlete. Fact not fiction.
The title says 100 meters but it should be 100 yards. I thought he demolisted the world record when I saw the time. Anyway, great video. Hershel was 6'1'' 225lbs . Darrell was 5'9" 184. Hershel was a freak of nature to be that fast.
@finnfinn7703 How could we possibly, or better said, how could YOU possibly know who was fastest when there wasn't an off season competition, until the 1980's? Would greene still be the fastest today?... Far from it. As far as I'm concerned, if they didn't kit the players out in full pads, cleats and helmets, then the race event should have been called "The NFL's fastest TRACK athlete" When they have the NHL's fastest competition, the players race in their pads with their sticks.
Not for nothing, but no need to defend Green, we all know how fast he was. I think the point here is that Herschel won this race and Green even said he pulled up because he knew he lost. Also, watch the race closely, Walker lead from start to finish (40, 60, 100). On a separate note, Walker and Jackson both had unbelievable blistering speed. Bo's legend is bigger than life, but the truth is Walker was faster and the better more durable college player.
Big ups to Green being honest, and not making any excuses. Herschel Walker once said "Bo Jackson nor Deion Sanders could ever beat me in a foot race, so I don't know how they were ever able to run 4.1 40s when I, myself, could never run anything close to that." He was alluding to those 4.1 claims for guys like Deion, Bo, etc are actually bs.
@@tramainesmith6067 There is a video with Deion in it which shows the actual written times for his 40 yard dash. Two time keepers clocked Deion at 4.27 secs and two others clocked him at 4.29 and 4.31. This was hand-timed so if you add the approximate 0.24 sec delay to get an estimated electronic time, that would be about 4.41 secs. That's fast but not top 10 these days. On an ESPN video which they uploaded to YT, Bo talked about his dash being right before track practice with an Olympian so he didn't want to do the dash at all and just entertained the people there with a not so serious 4.3 secs electronic time. He says his coach told him to stop playing with those people and get serious so Bo told someone to bring his bags outside because he was going to do his 40 and run out the door. There were people with stop watches and there was a proper electronic timing setup (most likely infrared beam like Brower speed gates). Bo went full speed through the next 40 and was out the door immediately before they could tell him a time. He said he found out after track practice what his times were. Supposedly some people who hand timed him had it as low as 3.9 secs or 4 flat but, according to what Bo was told, the electronic timing system clocked him at 4.09 secs. That's what he remembers he was told. I personally don't think he was as fast or faster than the current 60m world record holder and fastest recorded 40 yard dash record holder Christian Coleman who clocked 4.12 secs back in 2018, the same year he broke his own 60m record with a 6.34 secs time (Christian Coleman's 40 yard dash is on RUclips too if you haven't seen it). I do think Bo could've definitely clocked 4.3 or maybe 4.2 has his peak but we don't have any record of his times other than word of mouth. With Deion, the card with his recorded times is still available.
@@gmaxsfoodfitness3035 Yeah, I've seen those official times of Deion, and I've heard that bull crap that Bo Jackson said about his "track practice times." I don't believe Bo Jackson's story any more than I believe in a Santa. Guys like Bo and Deion are the reason why people don't understand just how fast a 4.3 to 4.6 is. They have people thinking that those times are, somewhat, slow. Even a 4.7 is pretty fast for the average human being.

Ehhh .. Herschel was a Track star. In fact Herschel was an All American Track perfromer at the Univ of Georgia and won 7th place in the 1981 Div 1 NCAA 100m Finals. Not going to let you pretend Herschel couldn't take down Green with both in the same condition .. Not a fluke.
In an earlier response comment reply for this video [by kidmack3556] he noted the flailing arms of Green in the race which could have slowed down his running stride. I did a replay of the video at half-speed and noted that Walker's arm work, while running, was more in keeping with proper sprinting form, while Green did, indeed, flail his arms while running, which contributed to his slower running time.
That’s a lie, walker never needed steroids, where’s your proof? That man was known to do hundreds of pushups and sit-ups a day. They say he never lifted weights and he was always seen jogging, teammates said he ran 10 miles a day . Now 30 years later , you wanna talk shit about him🤨

Bo Jackson and Herschel Walker are two of the greatest athletes I’ve ever seen. Seeing them play football and baseball(Bo) as a young man left me slack jawed. Growing up as a Lions fan I was constantly amazed at the stuff Barry Sanders managed to do, as well!
I was going to say that's world record time ... but then I rewinded the part and looked at the words again. It's not 100 meters, it's 100 yards! Otherwise, Herschel Walker would be the fastest man on Earth. Even Usain Bolt's record is 9.58 Yards are similar to meters, but it's ultimately a huge difference. 100 yards is 91.44 meters. Walker was an incredible and inspirational athlete though.

Not even close he got smoked in '90 competition by Gault and Willie "Flipper" Anderson and was in a photo finish with Barry Sanders for 3rd can't remember who edged who but time was exact same.
Amazing video. If they raced 10 times I don't see that happening on most of the races. Daryl Green was the fastest in that era of football. Micah Parsons outran Tyreek Hill in one of these recently, even though Parson's, though amazingly fast, has never posted times quite as fast as Hill. Just goes to show you how important get off is. Anything can happen in one race. I'll never forget Adam Venatieri, the New England Patriots kicker, chasing down and tackling Herschell Walker on a kick return where Herschell appeared to be gone. That doesn't happen most of the time either if Herschell had ten do-overs. Anything can happen in one race. Herschell was amazing though, no doubt about that. He and Bo Jackson each had a blend of size and speed that wasn't seen previously and I'm not sure has been seen since. Both were astonishingly powerful too. They each were Earl Campbell and Gayle Sayers combined into one body.
Greene just got faster the farther he ran and could maintain his top speed for a good distance. Which is why he was able to run people down from behind so easily he gained speed the longer he ran. One thing is. Nobody never out ran Greene on the football field
The big fella was a proper world class sprinter. Used to watch him run on TV. A shame Athletics lost him to American Football. But can't blame the guy he became a professional sportsman, to earn a living. And make his money whilst he can still compete.

Herschel Walker was so underused with the Vikings. They give up all those picks but yet they didn’t want to feature him.
Agreed. Never made any damn sense

@chefmarcos well Bo was a better football player and obviously baseball. But remember Walker was very good at MMA, even as an old man. Would greene still be the fastest today?... Far from it.
As far as I'm concerned, if they didn't kit the players out in full pads, cleats and helmets, then the race event should have been called "The NFL's fastest TRACK athlete"
When they have the NHL's fastest competition, the players race in their pads with their sticks.
I'm impressed that Darrell Green didn't take the opportunity to fake an injury there when the interviewer asked him if he was hurt
I watched Green play a lot and he didn't seem that fast to me.
