After all, the best players in 100 years of the NFL are almost reduced to a decade: the 80's and it was a pleasure to have lived it, Pete Rozelle's dream come true.
Darrell first made contact with Dorsett at the 17 yard line.....and he first made contact with Dickerson at the 22 yard line....and those 2 RBs had huge headstarts.......this is spectacular defense......Respect
2:05 count the yards in this Dorsett Play. Tony ran 82 yards through the entire Washington defense. How is this on Darell Green’s highlight reel and not on Tony Dorsett’s?
Forty and sixty yards are not true measures of speed. These are measures of quickness. I remember back in 1987, during a Superstars 100 yard dash competition, Herschel Walker beat Darryl Green. Herschel ran a 9.57s and Darryl ran a 9.72s. I wish that I still had that VHS tape of the race.
I don't understand how this can be argued. We know Bob Hayes was faster. It was measured. It's like arguing which car has the highest top speed. It's been measured, there's nothing to argue.
@Andrew Where does it say that? How fast did Hayes run on the field? How fast did Green run on the field? You don't know. What you do know is what they ran on the track. That is documented. Hayes was faster on the track. So they both put on 8-12lbs of equipment, the both use cleats, and they both run on turf or grass. Everything is still even. the both are used to wearing the equipment because they both played through college. So what would slow Hayes down more than Green? Or How would Green magically get faster?
Yes Bob Hayes was faster but what they are saying in the film is Darryl Green is the fastest because he has been that fast , that long. (20 years) freakish That's what they are going by. And I agree.
He was the fastest player I've ever seen When he got up to speed he was lightning and could trot faster than 90% of the league could run That Dorset moment was awesome
I wish they would have showed Darrell Green covering Randy Moss. I remember Moss having a few steps on Green on a deep pass and Green accelerating and knocking the pass away.
There were years when he didn’t intercept lots of passes though. Because for years - years - they didn’t throw in his direction. Loved watching him play.
Darrell Green, no question is the fastest.. He wasnt just fast for one or two years, he was the fastest for his entire career, and he won the fastest man comp 4 times, every time he entered.
@@seancagney1369 Hayes 10.06 on cinders, Green 10.08 on an all weather track. Hayes was definitely faster. But there are players who have run faster than both of them.
@THE REAL L.C When deciding who is faster, the 40 is irrelevant. It does not measure top speed of the fastest players. All it measures is quickness and partial acceleration because they don't reach maximum velocity til about 50m out. They are still accelerating at the 40yd mark. So the 40 cannot possibly determine who is fastest when they aren't even running their fastest. Also those hand timed 40s below 4.2 are all fluff. No human can run a legit 4.08. Christian Coleman the 60m world record holder and the quickest starter in history, ran an NFL style 40 in 4.12 semi automatically timed. None of those 4.1 hand timed players could even be close to Coleman. 4.08 is humanly impossible. Hayes ran 10.06 on cinders. Green ran 10.08 on a newer all weather track and was out run on the field in pads by Rams Ron Brown 10.06, and Falcons Mike Haines 10.35. Since you CANNOT measure speed in pads to compare players not on the same field or from different eras, how can you make a statement like, "Green is the fastest in pads"? You are NOT talking facts. Facts are things PROVEN to be true. What you are talking is your opinion.
@THE REAL L.C No. You look it up. You are the one who needs to show proof to back up your statements. I just gave you a logical explanation with proven facts why 4.08 is not possible. Yet you still seem to beleive Darrell Green a 10.08 100m sprinter can run a quicker 40yds than the 60m world record holder, the guy who has run the quickest first 30m in recorded history in 3.77, and who is the 6th fastest man in the history of planet Earth. Think about it.
We do know. Hayes ran a 10.06 100M WR in the 64 Olympics on a chewed-up cinder track with his lane in very poor condition. Green ran 10.08 on a synthetic track 20 years later. Hayes was the world's fastest human in the early to mid-1960s, and Green was never considered that. Darrell Green was a class act and a super nice guy, a great football player but never the world's fastest human.
I thought Darrell always ran faster when he was chasing someone down. He made everyone else look like they were running in slow motion. As much as I like him as a football player, he is even a greater person.
And Dorsett was coasting at the end because he never saw Green coming and thought he was home free. And then there was an angle. Not the best one, but still an angle and a headstart when you consider that Green lined up at last 10 yards off the line o f scrimmage prior to the snap. I saw the game when it happened and I have it on tape.
That play when he runs down Dorsett is exactly how I feel about Sam Shields. Time and time again when a big play breaks off, some Packer defenders are helplessly flailing their arms trying to catch an offensive player and in comes Shields out of nowhere to tackle the dude from behind. I have that same reaction every time "...what?"
Yes, he was a class player and still a classy person. This isn't a "classy player" award, it's about being the "fastest" runner. Hayes and a few others were faster. ruclips.net/video/3KbrlxrCbk8/видео.html
lloyd kline now that I think about it, not so easily. Bob Hayes may have the slight edge in straight line speed (Green could’ve easily been an Olympic medalist in the olympics do not fool yourself), but Green wasn’t just fast in a pure dash. He was fast running backwards, going lateral, easily changes directions without losing speed. I admit I never really watch bob Hayes film, but I think it would be much tougher for him to torch Darrell green. There was no one in that time that had half the speed that green had, let alone even be half the corner that he was.
Pause it at 2:35, he’s got his back turned while being held by the wr and Eric is almost in full stride. To make this almost unbelievable, he was diagonal to him so it wasn’t a full on vertical catch up speed... i dont wana go on. That’s just ridiculous.
You don’t find many elite, high character corners like Darrell Green. Guys like him, Art Monk, and Joe Gibbs are why the Skins won 3 Super Bowls in a decade. Absolutely high class individuals who only cared about winning.
Darrell Green was winning fastest NFL player contests AFTER he retired and was like 44 years old. If you don't think he was fast, watch the Dorsett play. Tony Doresett had a THIRTY yard head start before Green began to pursue, and Green caught him before he scored. Search it and find out where Green was before he entered the picture. Or just watch Eric get caught
dorsett was coasting to the goal line and didn't anybody would catch him. nobody knew who green was at the time. besides, i think dorsett was in his 5th or 6th year. green was a rookie.
@@redgrapeskins once dorsett got past the 3rd level of defense, it was time to start celebrating. meanwhile, darrell was running like he was trying to catch a rabbit or something.

That was a beautiful thing to watch when it happen "live"...I was there ( seeing it on TV! I am now 53)...I saw most of this great footage that is now on youtube! I loved " The Vikes" from 69'-2009"....40 years of heartbreak! I wish them well, but I rarely watch the NFL these days. D.Green was awesome! HOF!
I admire this guy. When I turned 50 I found out I could still run fast - you never lose your fast twitch muscles - they just breakdown a little more often. At the age of 59 I overtook the opposition's rugby winger so I could get a better photograph (I do the pictures for my team). The opposition said I should have been playing against them but I told them my age and said my body wouldn't survive the tackles. I'm sure Darrel could still run fast if he wanted to. Sprinter Kim Collins ran 9.93 at the age of 41. So what is age? Just a number. If you want to run fast - you can - at any age.
Not only ran down Dickerson but made him look slow. Walked down jery rice, Tony Dorset and many others! Such a great player and role model for kids. I started playing football because of Darrell Green and wanted to be just like him, I gave it my all and of course didn't have the success he did but there was days out on those football fields where I had 2 or 3 interceptions in a game and I sure felt like I was Darrell Green lol. He was always underrated and I don't understand why? He played for 2 decades and was still a very capable player when he retired. I was 5 when he was drafted and I didn't really start watching football til around 85-86 season so I was 7,8 and watching him immediately made me a fan of him and of Washington which I'm still a proud fan of til this day. Those was some great years for Washington and it's been a longtime since any real success but the franchise finally looks like it's on the upswing and maybe Washington will get back on top and be a proud organization it once was. Hey Darrell we need to pick up a cornerback this offseason are you interested? I bet he can still play and even if he's lost another step or two he'd still be faster than a lot of players. Hail to Washington and Hail to the all time greatest Washington cornerback ever #28 Darrell Green.
What is missed and overlooked is that he was a great football player. Great tackler in run support. We don't win the Super Bowl in '87, without him. 1. The Punt Return TD vs. da Bears in the 3rd divisional round playoff meeting in 4 years between them. He also shut down track nemesis Willie Gault in the 1st half before getting injured after said punt return. 2. The shutdown of AC in the NFC chip and the "heads up" pass defense at the goal line on Darrin Nelson to seal the game. His continued excellence at the position and solid consistency there has a set a bar that may not be attained ever.
@@delanomcravin4484 You do know speed is not an opinion. It is measurable and provable. Just using an opinion on speed is like using your opinion on who is the heaviest. You have the weight because it was measured, just like you have the speed thst was measured.

Darrell Green's best 100 meter time was 10.06. Ron Brown's was 10.01. Bullet Bob Hayes' best was 9.91. These guys are all world class. They would've made one great relay team.
Darrell green was whopping up on modern players in the pro bowl skills challenge in 2004 I believe. He was right in step with guys like Allen Rossum. I think he was over 50 too.
Well, Darrell Green did play long after most people of his talent had retired...he was also the last player from the 1983 draft to retire, and he was still a starter at age 42 (his final year in the league).
If I could build a time machine and had the choice to only bring back one player to play on the Skins' current team, it would be to go back to the days of Darrell Green's ultimate prime and bring him with me, without somehow fucking up the future in some unforeseen and terrible way.... Actually, nah, fuck it, I'd probably just bring back the whole 1991 Washington Redskins Superbowl team with me.
This probably best tells how good at covering WRs Green was. Super Bowl XXVI: Whenever the Redskins put man coverage on Andre Reed,Green was the one who covered Reed(others committed pass interference on Reed)and Reed had less than 30 receiving yards. Super Bowls XXVII & XXVIII: Against the top 10 Cowboys defenses,Reed had a combined 15 catches for over 220 yards.
I would think so too but if you heard why they chose Darryl Green is because he was so fast for so long. I don't know any NFL player that played 20 years in the NFL and was as fast as was when he retired .

Coming straight out of H-Town!!
Once asked about the secret to his amazing speed & longevity:
"Good clean living"
Yes sir!
Darrell Green is perhaps the greatest player in Redskins history. 20 years with the same team. HTTR!
Dan Hanna Sean Taylor
@@soprecise7993 Nah, It's Heath Shuler.
Dan Hanna .. Amen HTTR
Sammy Baugh
Scored 4 touchdowns on offense and intercepted 4 passes on defense in the same game
Sammy Baugh, dude..
When asked how fast he was by a reporter, he replied "as fast as I need to be". Wow
youngins don't know about green, tootsie roll in the sock
After all, the best players in 100 years of the NFL are almost reduced to a decade: the 80's and it was a pleasure to have lived it, Pete Rozelle's dream come true.
Love how Summerall just botches his injury as he's holding his ribs.
" He might have hurt his hamstring"
Yeah but Summerall and Madden together was great and they did all the 80’s Redskins games .. RIP BOTH
Darrell Green vs Willie Gault. What a matchup watching those two on the turf
Darrell is the greatest Washington football player ever. Great role model too.
Darrell first made contact with Dorsett at the 17 yard line.....and he first made contact with Dickerson at the 22 yard line....and those 2 RBs had huge headstarts.......this is spectacular defense......Respect
Actually Green had the headstart on Dorsett so you dont know what you are talking about
20 years with one team will that happen ever again?
2:05 count the yards in this Dorsett Play. Tony ran 82 yards through the entire Washington defense. How is this on Darell Green’s highlight reel and not on Tony Dorsett’s?
Because he was run down from behind.
Happy Birthday to my favorite defensive back to ever play the game!!
I don't understand how this can be argued. We know Bob Hayes was faster. It was measured. It's like arguing which car has the highest top speed. It's been measured, there's nothing to argue.
There’s more to being the fastest car then just having the highest top speed
He was the fastest player I've ever seen
When he got up to speed he was lightning and could trot faster than 90% of the league could run
That Dorset moment was awesome
I wish they would have showed Darrell Green covering Randy Moss. I remember Moss having a few steps on Green on a deep pass and Green accelerating and knocking the pass away.
At the time moss was young and Green was old
@@MrDcbrockwell89 True and Green hung with him. I'm a Vikings fan but give respect to Green.
There were years when he didn’t intercept lots of passes though. Because for years - years - they didn’t throw in his direction. Loved watching him play.
Darrell Green, no question is the fastest.. He wasnt just fast for one or two years, he was the fastest for his entire career, and he won the fastest man comp 4 times, every time he entered.
erivers71 Bob Hayes is faster at their best🤷🏿♂️
@@SoulSociety404 Debatable.....
We'll never know who's faster between bullet Bob and Hayes, but we can always reminisce how amazing their careers were
That is because they are the same person.
Ron Brown of the Rams out ran him on Monday night in 87. On the kick off.
All of Bob's times, are faster than Green's. And Hayes ran those times, on dirt, and cinder tracks, on many occasions.
@@MichaelSimmons. with hand times
"I had a run, when I broke, I knew he was coming."
I thought Darrell always ran faster when he was chasing someone down. He made everyone else look like they were running in slow motion.
As much as I like him as a football player, he is even a greater person.
Bob Hayes should be No.1. Yeah Darrell Green is real good.
2:00 Darrell Green caught Dorsett only after Dorsett gained 80 yards on the run while carry a football. Not a great example of athletic prowess
Waiting for the fake Odell to say he is faster than him
Lol ikr
+K-Team Sports Green would torch him
Odell is fast but not that fast he was clocked in the 4.40 neighborhood.
+Jeff Simpson If your talking about Odell then yes Darrel would eat him alive!!!!!!
I like O dell...He would b welcome here in Philadelphia any day. ..
Watched Darrel Green when I was growing up. Still the fastest I've ever seen.
I guess you never saw these.

But he wasn't the fastest player of all time.
Yes, he was a class player and still a classy person. This isn't a "classy player" award, it's about being the "fastest" runner. Hayes and a few others were faster. ruclips.net/video/3KbrlxrCbk8/видео.html
A race between Darrell Green and Bob Hayes certainly would have been close.
Hayes would win 100 meters, green on 40 yards
Bob Hayes was fast. 🏃♂️
If Darrell Green had to cover Bob Hayes...
Where do you even start?
Joshua Rinosa on your mar.....where the hell are they??? Lol
big ian not if the quarterback judges right your like 8 you don’t know what your talking about
Bob hayes blow Darren green off the field
Somebody has to have simulated that in the Madden video game.
lloyd kline now that I think about it, not so easily.
So glad we have a new owner !

To catch Eric D., a great stand-up runner all the while needing to make up 10 yards to do it, is IMPRESSIVE !!!
#28 was a BIG part of those years the Redskins were so great! Mr. Green is also a class act of a man! I loved how he got Dickerson from behind!! Nobody ever caught him in full stride!
I know it’s and old post, but totally agree.
@@JesseWilliams-ii9xs I still train hard and last year managed to run up and down 81 steps , 50 times, in one hour 7 minutes.
Neal Anderson toasted him in 1988
Thank you! And he mentored Champ Bailey, who is now also HOF
20 years in the league wow
If Forest Gump played in the NFL, he would be number 1
Straight hilarious if he all that then have him challenge deion Sanders
Thats comical Run forrest run.
He wouldn’t even be the fastest white guy in the NFL, let alone the fastest. Be realistic.
Jade, it was a joke....idiot
Was lucky enough to watch this guy in his prime

He ran a 4.4 when he turned 50 just for fun. Unreal lol
In his 50th birthday, DG went out and ran a 40 in 4.43s!
IN fact, I think that Bob Hayes was faster and I would put Cliff Branch up against Green on any day as well

Bob Hayes was so fast, he invented Cover 3. He should be 1.
