- A poignant music video recalling the Union Pacific Railroad’s famous 9000 series steam locomotive and lamenting its disappearance into time.
Nine Thousand
(c) 2019 Philip M Brey
All Rights Reserved
Do you recall from yesterday’s time,
When steam was the king of the road
There was an engine that rode the UP line
Nine Thousand was her name
She was 4-12 and 2 and she had a rendezvous
With one hundred cars to pull up Touhy Hill
Now she is gone, but her memory lingers on
Nine Thousand was her name
Her mighty drivers’ roar are gone and heard no more
From Oak Valley where she road to fame
The diesel won the race but cannot take her place
Nine Thousand was her name
And they still say at night, when the wind is blowing right
You can hear the lonesome whistle from that train
How could I know, that I would miss her so
Nine Thousand was her name
And they still say at night, when the wind is blowing right
You can hear the lonesome whistle from that train
How could I know, that I would miss her so
Nine Thousand was her name Видеоклипы
The diesel won the race, but cannot take her place… that is very true. Great job with this song Nebraska 66
Thanks for watching and your kind comment!
9000 was saved from the scrapper's torch. Retired from revenue service in 1956. The locomotive was donated to Los Angeles County Fairplex in Pomona, California for display today.
Maybe they will revive her like they did with Big Boy 4014 someday.
Hopefully
Thanks for the info
She might need some adjustments on her wheels or other parts
You guys need more atantione and respekt and more subs i Love this song and roll om big boy sorry if i havet bad english its not My ferst lageg
The 9000s had 3 cylinders, giving them that distinctive puff-puff-puff sound every exhaust blast.
Cool fact. Very interesting!
ah the distinctive 123 sound of a three cylinder locomotive just like the British A4s, A2s and A3s
I love the superpower of the UP, and the fact that several examples of different supper power classes still exist, the prototype 9000 class locomotive, several big boys, 2 challengers, several DDA40Xs, and 2 turbines still operating or on static display is incredible
Absolutely!
I don't know why I like this song, but I REALLY like this song
Thank you! So glad you like our song! We greatly appreciate your support!
Same here
I can't decide which video I like more, "Roll On, Big Boy," or "Nine Thousand." It's a hard choice!!
I love the musical energy of Big Boy and the different scenes of the countryside, particularly the snow. Images of the crowds around the train add to the energy.
Nine Thousand is different in so many ways from Big Boy. The historical film footage really gives some depth to the viewer, and both the lyrics and Phil Brey's voice give it a lonesome, haunting quality, like the Northern Plains themselves. It's almost as if he's a ghost of one of the train's engineers, singing about its past glories. You kind of expect him to vanish as he's walking away, down the tracks.
I think Nine Thousand has the edge . . .
Cool! Thanks for your analysis of these two songs. We appreciate your comparison of and insight into these two productions.
I can't either!

@@Nebraska66 I have just made an lyrics for the music: *Title: Nine Thousand*
''Do you recall from yesterdays time? when steam was the king of the road, There was an engine who rolled the UP line, Nine thousand was her name she was her name, She was four and two and she had around the boo (caboose) with one hundred carts to pull up to the hill, but now she’s gone but her memory lingers on, Nine thousand was her name, Mighty drivers roar upon and heard no more from ó Valley she rolled to fame, The diesel won the race but cannot take her place, And they still say at night when the wind is blowing right you can hear the longsome whistle, How could I know I woud miss her so Nine Thousand was her name, And they still say at night when the wind is blowing right you can hear the longsome whistle, How could I know I woud miss her so Nine Thousand was her name, And They still say at night when the wind is blowing right you can hear the longsome whistle.''
@@Nebraska66 ...it's just because I have seen the lyrics on other musics such as *Legends On The Rails* (etc. - with other train musics)
Atleast we still have the real No. 1 of them all. 9000! YES BABY!😎
Just found this band a few days ago and I absolutely love these songs. Some of the lyrics almost make me tear up to know that the train is gone. But 9000 will be remembered as a legend of railroading.
Thanks for your comments and support! We really appreciate it. We have more songs in the pipeline for later release as soon as we’re done recording and mixing.
9000 actually survived into preservation.
@@MilesModelWorks i know
@@MilesModelWorksthe reason it says “now she is gone” is that 9000 is preserved and exists today but it’s gone as it no longer runs
@@aplane9625 Thanks for the clarification 👍
I absolutely love the depth and the tone of this song. It makes me thinks of the old days of railroading.
Thanks! Much appreciated!
Great song and awesome footage of the 9000 series. Back when railroading was King.
Thanks for watching! We appreciate it!
I love this it reminds me to play or to build one steam enggine at our country in philipine
This brought a tear to my eyes. Thank you for keeping the memory of this magnificent titan alive.
You’re quite welcome and thanks so much for watching! We greatly appreciate it!
The actual thing survived
This song has an old feeling to it as looking like it is old, however it’s not. My grandma’s friend worked as a train man, not sure when however.
Seriously, all the songs from these guys are criminally under-rated
Thanks!
Yes
Exactly
You guys are my new favorite band you’re train songs are amazing!
Thanks very much!❤️
"And They still say at night when the wind is blowing right you can that whistle from that train" know that I can confirm I was in elpaso Texas for a few days with my family on a vacay and on our first night I had gotten up to use the bathroom when I thought I heard a whistle a long wholesome whistle and after doing some research I found that the whistle I heard was from a 9000
No doubt you heard the 9000 series! “The diesel won the race, but cannot take her place”. Thanks for watching!
I read this comment when that part came up

This song is super underrated. The lyrics are amazing, the instrumental pieces are spectacular, and the combination of the two sounds amazing.

@@Nebraska66 I had my father (also a railfan) listen to this and he loved it!
@@dimwit47_ Thanks for sharing the song with your father! Much appreciated! So happy he likes it.
This and "Roll on, Big Boy" are my favorite 2 songs of yours, and the timing of footage and music is perfect.
As for the 9000 class, I find it fascinating. The 9000 class 4-12-2s marked the start of Union Pacific's "Horsepower addiction", which would end with the EMD DDA40X of 1969-1971.
The 9000 class would've never existed in the first place without the Union Pacific's unique view of how to run a railroad: one locomotive per train, which the 9000s were designed to do.
While the 9000 class of 4-12-2s were able to haul a 100-car freight train unaided, they unfortunately weren't flawless. The long, rigid wheelbase made it almost impossible to negotiate curves without damaging the track or wheels of the engine, and the 3-cylinder layout made them difficult to maintain.
However, the 9000's flaws would lay the groundwork for Union Pacific's "Challenger" class of simple articulated 4-6-6-4s, which would, in turn, provide the foundation for the larger Big Boys, the articulation of both designs solving the shortcomings of the earlier 9000s.
The 9000 class wouldn't just inspire designs in the U.S, however, as the Soviet AA20 4-14-4 was inspired by the 9000s. While the 9000s were at least able to handle the work given to them, to say the AA20 was a failure would be an understatement, being a poor steamer, overweight, destroying the track it ran on and derailing often. In the end, only a single AA20 would be built, being scrapped in 1960.
While the 9000s were heavy haulers, their long wheelbase and inside middle cylinder meant that they were some of the first UP steam engines to be retired, from 1953-1956.
While most of the 9000s were scrapped, No. 9000, the prototype and first one built, is on Display at the RailGiants Museum, with an air hose hooked up to the whistle, so it can be heard if a visitor pulls the whistle chain.
So, while the 9000 class had flaws which limited their capabilities, it was because of the 9000's shortcomings that the Challengers and Big Boys were created.
As always, very interesting. Thanks again for the info. Very interesting to us and I’m sure to many on the channel. We appreciate it! Roll On!

Great song! Could you please do one about the Challengers and Northerns too? Fun fact: The 9000 class is one of the last surviving locomotives of its kind. A classic from the golden age of steam engines.
We need more song songs like this for more famous engines
Thank you! We are currently in the studio mixing our latest song entitled "The Living Legend", about UP's 844 locomotive. I hesitate to give a time for release as we've delayed the release a few times already due to some non music matters to attend to and our experimentation with various song arrangements. Fun fact: The 9000 series is one of the last surviving locomotives of its kind. A classic from the golden age of steam. The first time I learned locomotives 9001-9087 were scrapped, it made me heartbroken. I felt sorry for these locomotives
That the same with me when I found out only one Caledonian 812 and one 415 Adams radial tank survived the torch

Absolutely love the song you made it remindes me of old-fashioned songs. I love that you found photos and videos of the locomotive in service. It's more than likely will not happen but if the U.P. steam crew or other steam franchise were to restore the 9000 locomotive ro running condition It would gain lots of attention.
Absolutely, that would be quite a happening to get 9000 up and running.
Would be interesting, but 9000 is a slow and very long locomotive; it cannot traverse tight curves and wasn't made for speed
@@coloradongguy Plus the fact it was a *nightmare* to maintain with it's 3rd cylinder under the locomotive.
I don't know if it was a voice effect or something. But the robotic-like sound of mister breys singing really sells me on this. Its almost ghost like and i love it.
Thanks!
Agree
Well I loved that song. That reminded me of the entire 9000 class getting scraped except 9000. I’m so sad that 9052, 9031, 9030, and 9086 were gone. But I loved that song!😌

The Union Pacific #9000 is a 4-12-2 and she's on display at Railgiants Train Museum in Pomona California. The soviets thought they could rip off the #9000 with their AA20. But they screwed up super badly with the AA20. The #9000 Class suffered an accident after UP #9018 suffered a boiler explosion. #9000 is the only UP 9000 class left.
9000 and her sisters were the largest engines to make use of the Gresley conjugated valve gear. Designed by Sir Nigel Gresley, who was the chief mechanical engineer of the London and North Eastern Railway this system used two hinged levers connected to the outer cylinder's valves to operate the inner cylinder's valve.
This is very interesting. Thanks for sharing your knowledge of the inner workings of 9000 and thanks for all your support. It is greatly appreciated!
Nebraska 66 must have been a state highway. Many trains cut through the Cornhusker State. 9000 must have been one legendary iron horse. Harold Warp Pioneer Village might be a rightful place for showing it off.
I've looked for music that's more directly about trains but also not children's songs. I found Big Boy and then stumbled upon this, and when I heard this I knew I found the right song. The haunting feel of the tone is amazing. If you could release lyrics to it, that'd be awesome. Great work friends, hope to see more down the line.
Thank you very much. We greatly appreciate your support! We’ll go ahead and get the lyrics out. Thanks for this request. We’re working on more material and are planning to release another locomotive song about the UP Living Legend 844.
@@Nebraska66 That's epic! Also this is only just a suggestion for the future, could you eventually make a song about a locomotive on the East Coast? Ex. The Pennsylvania T1 Locomotive and its alleged speed of 140mph and the effort being made to resurrect it? Just a suggestion.
