- Another original steam engine song by Nebraska 66. This one is about Union Pacific’s venerable Big Boy steam locomotive. In particular, the song focuses on UP’s newly operational Big Boy 4014. As many of you know, Big Boy 4014 has created quite a stir these last few years in light of her full restoration and return to operation. The song serves up healthy servings of Big Boy history topped off with generous portions of steam era nostalgia. We like to think listening to the song will be about as close as you can get to riding in Big Boy herself as she rolls up the Wasatch Mountain Range but you’ll have to be the judge. Enjoy!

“Roll On Big Boy”
By Nebraska 66
© 2021 Phil Brey (All Rights Reserved)
Verse 1:
A legend from the past,
Is born again at last,
To rumble over mountains and the plains
From the golden age of steam,
An engine seldom seen,
By those who never lived in bygone days
Verse 2:
Big Boy was her name,
And went on to railroad fame,
As the largest engine on the UP line
The last of all her class,
She survives from out the past,
To show the power of steam in modern times
Chorus:
Roll on Big Boy, Roll on Big Boy, Rumblin’ across the northern plains,
Roll on Big Boy, Roll on Big Boy, Climbing up the Wasatch mountain range
Verse 3
In 1959,
They took her off the line,
And wrote her off as progress for the times
No dry eye could be found,
In jungles or in towns,
Where once Big Boy had rolled when in her prime
Verse 4
From the junkyards of the past,
4014 is the last,
To carry on the legacy of steam
At 4, 8, 8 and 4,
And a part of railroad lore,
She roars from out the past like some lost dream
Chorus (different from 1st chorus)
Roll on Big Boy, Roll on Big Boy, Rumblin’ across the northern plains,
Roll on Big Boy, Roll on Big Boy, Climbing up the Wasatch mountain range
Roll on, Big Boy Roll On
Roll On, Big Boy Roll On
Spoken:
Roll on, Big Boy, Roll On
Unfortunately, it is with great sadness that I announce the passing of my father, Phil Brey. Some of you already know that he and I started the Nebraska 66 recording project to record his many compositions. He wrote all of the songs we released, including the perennial favorite Roll on Big Boy. He also provided crucial input on our music and video productions. Thanks to all for your messages of condolence and continuing support.
Can you add some more trains songs?
RIP Phil, he came up with great lyrics for this song, I make sure to listen to this song on the way to school every day. Again, RIP Phil, you will not be forgotten.
NO...
Are you serious right now?😪
NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!🤧
And I was gonna take a hiking trip on saturday making a video for your song 'Roots and rocks'. I'll dedicate it to Phil.✌🙏 (Hug)
Will his compositions in work be saved over to the future? They were mostly great.🥲😔
I had a friend that once rode a Big Boy up the Wasach Mountains and he asked to the engineer: "Where's the big hill that slows down the train" and the engineer just replied: "We're already on it". The Big Boy is an amazing train with so much power. Thanks for making the song!
You’re very welcome! Thanks for sharing that Big Boy experience from your friend and for commenting.
@@Nebraska66Um how much are tickets to ride the train? And be in the cab?

Big boy recently proved steam is still powerful. For those who didn’t hear, in late June of 2023, big boy 4014 pushed a stalled freight train while carrying its own train. The total amount of cars it carried was more than 150!
I read about that and it made me very happy that Big Boy was used in actual operations again. Thanks for commenting! Roll on!

My 5 year old son who is a train lover found this video and song and was singing it over and over agian. I was like what is a big boy? 48 hours later was drove to Scranton PA. to see 4012 at the Steamway Museum OMG is is HUGE. I love this song and my 5 year old sings it non stop.
Thank you to you and your son for your support! We greatly appreciate it! Sorry my response to you is a little late. I saw Big Boy 4014 last August in Nebraska and the experience is unforgettable. A massive, awe-inspiring piece of machinery rumbling down the tracks spitting vapor and steam and shaking the ground as she passed by. A few days before this, I saw Big Boy 4023 in Omaha which is on display in a park. Thanks again! Roll On!

Your son is a railfan (railfan means "train lover")
The rhythmic behavior of the drivingbars in these great cinematic shots along with the music is just perfect
Thanks so much!
My great grandpa operated 4014 back in her glory days, so it was so amazing to see this piece of railroad and family history brought back to life
But why can't you call him a boy when he has the word boy in his name?
The fact the UP managed to get a big boy running again, a feat no railfan ever thought would be possible and put her on tour, is incredible, the Big Boys are the biggest steam locomotives ever built and 4014 is the most powerful operating steam locomotive in the world, and I'm proud that the U.S and the Union Pacific can lay claim to that title.
I’m very proud as well for the U.S. and UP! 🇺🇸
Ok, not to be WELL ACHTULEE, but the C&O Allegheny has the largest boiler of any steam locomotive, which trchnically makes her bigger. But Big Boy beats her in literally every other way, so understandably Big Boy is more popular, and since she can pull more and she has more wheels, she's in steam, etc
@@familyrotter9065 the speed award would actually probably go to Union Pacific 844 with a know top speed of 120 mph, and many people believe that it can go faster, N&W 611 also is a contender with a top speed of at least 110
@@wills_corner Virginian 2-10-10-2 AE class built by Alco in the mid 19 teens had the largest boiler of any locomotive in the world 10 ft diameter, as well as the most tractive effort at 176,600 lbs and largest cylinders at 48 inches diameter. The locomotive weighed less than either Big Boy or Allegheny at 684,000 lbs without tender.(778,000 lbs no tender Allegheny, 772,000 lbs no tender Big Boy. AE Class was the strongest successful steam locomotive ever built. Triplexes can claim higher T.E. , but never were successful. Alco built the AE class, as well as the Big Boy. Lima , Ohio built the Allegheny. Steam locomotives are still relevant today, as they have direct mechanical drive unlike complicated diesel electrics. The oil mafia and car barons are to blame for the steam locomotive's demise. Steam has a wider variety of useable fuels than does diesel or internal combustion. Steam also can overcome past inefficiencies with modern updated gas fireboxes, condensing tender apparatuses, etc. Argentina De Porta designed a 2-12-12-0 that almost came into existence, during the 70s oil crises. Steam with its direct drive is nothing whimsical of the past. It is relevant and superior. My dream is to see car centricism completely destroyed in North America and status symbol diesel pickups melted at the smelter and use the material to build new steam locomotives. The engines of the past were built to last. Let's blast the car centric idiocy fast. Trains rule. These great locomotives arent just a spectacle tourist attraction. They are serious machines built for serious heavy work. The anger I have for seeing them have short lives is indescribable. My hatred of modern society is unfathomable. Steam will return with avengance. I am the embodiment of psycho steam. Steam never dies. Cast Iron torque will revenge. I have an immense hatred for car centricism, cars and trucks, car culture, airplanes and disgustingly built American car centric cities. I hate airplanes too. Ships, trains, bicycles are the only transportation needed .Cars and trucks are pests to be eliminated. Air travel, especially overseas, although faster than ships is like a sardine can hurled at high speeds in a completely uncivilized manner. Highway travel is deadly. The whistle of these great articulated restored locomotives is a calling back to sanity in an insane world. Heed the call. Let's build steam locomotives once again and forever. Calling all blacksmiths, and engineers. Make a a better world. There is a reason people stop and marvel at steam locomotives and ignore diesels and cars and planes. There is something spiritual about steam locomotives. Water is the essence of life.

In the late 60's early 70's when I was a kid we used to play on the 4014 when it was on static display at the Pomona fair grounds. We were in the cab turning knobs, pulling levers having a ball. A few years later they put a chain link fence around it to keep kids off. Never did we dream it would come back to life in all it's glory.....

Hi, I have a 2 year old son who is in love with this song, he sings it all day long, of course in his own way, but it's really cool.
So happy he likes the song! Yes, very cool. Hearing this really warms our hearts. Thanks so much for commenting and your support!
This sounds like a Hank Williams Jr. song, the singing is tops absolutely.

Once 4014 when it was going to Cheyenne, WY (Restored) actually assisted a stuck manifest on a hill like it was nothing. Also listened to this while chasing 4014 for like 60 miles
That’s so cool that Big Boy pulled a manifest. Thanks for listening!

Thank you!
I love this song! During school when they let us listen to music this is what I do and all the other kids are like. Hey what is that a train?
