Looking at his wrestling history, he was a favorite villain, next to Flair, Roddy Piper, & Hogan- before he became the people’s champion. But Ventura is very smart & knows his politics. For context, I was pure mark until about 1989. I was a youngster with my dad at the Igloo to see Bruno's win over Toro Tanaka. I popped loud and often. The following is an excerpt from a Facebook convo I had today with a much younger wrestling fan.
    This is how I see Jesse.
    I've heard the hype on both sides. Here's how I see JTBV, then and now. Depending on how you were taught (by Stu or Fritz or Jerry, etc) Wrestling has a format: 1) The incident 2) the grudge 3) the Promo 4) the in ring storytelling, ably assisted by the announcer and color commentator. Sometimes there's a 5) The Belt cannot change hands on a technicality . . . which brings the ouroboros back around to #1. Jesse was 1st rate at numbers 1,2,3 and great at 4- from the color commentator point of view. In ring, he was not a sparkling storyteller, but adequate. We youngsters back then saw him as a credible counter to the main talents. One of the principle qualities a great heel needs is the ability to generate heat with the target audience. What Jesse's got these days is historical street cred as one of the greatest heels of all time . . . main evented Bruno, main evented Hogan, made eternal enemies out of VKM, half of Minnesota, and went on to make a high profile friendship with Russia Today . . . which pissed off 100% of USA and roughly half of the rest of the world. These days, he's a broken down old man (so am I) . . . and still the best heat magnet ever. I vote him number 1 heel of all time.

      @@SillySongs4Everyone2001*, Vince did not “take” Austin. Austin was fired from WCW by Eric Bischoff, because Eric claimed that he could NOT market Austin.*
      *As far as Tara Ryzing/Terror Rising/Paul LaVesque/HHH, he was never as great a star as Austin and never will be. He was the only person that Vince trusted with the “raw” brand, which was Austin’s brand. “Smackdown” was Rock’s brand. HHH was never as great a superstar as the two of them. He wasn’t as great a superstar as that Cena guy or the Roman Reigns that I hear of. As compared to them all, HHH was as mediocre as anyone else who wouldn’t have made it, had it NOT been for his being Vince’s son-in-law.*

    • @megavolt67
      @megavolt67 Год назад

      @@ownknow8161 I agree though I will give HHH one thing, and that's that he developed a good look (and he was a solid if unspectacular wrestler). But in terms of charisma and connecting with the audience, he never worked as a superstar could draw like Rock or Austin (and I guess Cena with the kids, as Cena often got a mixed reaction from adults), and it wasn't for lack of trying. In the end he only worked as reliable heel opposition to the babyface, and even then, I always thought Vince and Stephanie were better heels (but obviously they couldn't wrestle matches like HHH could).
      Because of what you say though, I think HHH is one of the biggest overachievers in wrestling history. He did it through backstage politicking, networking, and booking himself into big matches and title wins, but he's convinced a lot of younger people today the he was as great if not greater than Rock and Austin. I don't know if that's praiseworthy, but it's definitely machiavellian.

    The upside of the steroid era was that the wrestlers were monsters, huge and looked super hero like. Something that almost no one could aspire to and it made wrestling special. Vince was right about the point that people want cartoonish characters in his rings and it sold tickets like crazy.
    Nowadays, they can take a ballet dancer or a good acrobat from cirque du soleil and turn him into a pro wrestler that can defeat a 7 feet tall monster.
    Gimme a freaking break! I'd rather watch them steroid pumped monsters than those scrawny kids because it makes wrestling unbelievable.

Of course Olly Anderson disliked mark Calaway that’s why he stagnated I wonder why he wasn’t paying more attention to Austin? But then again Austin wasn’t standing out with Pillman they were a mediocre tag team. Maybe you needed the flair approval to excel at WCW and there were only so many people the horseman could befriend.
