- The MK 38 (M242 Bushmaster) is a 25 mm (25×137mm) chain-driven machine gun system (MGS) installed for ship self-defense. A derivative of the M242 system, the Mk 38 consists of the M242 chain gun and the Mk 88 Mod 0 machine gun mount. The MK 38 MOD 0 25 mm MGS replaced the MK 16 20 mm gun system and was then upgraded to a MK 38 MOD 1 MGS. Designed primarily as a close-range defensive measure, it provides protection against patrol boats, floating mines, and various shore-based targets.
It is an externally powered, chain-driven, single-barrel weapon which may be fired in semi-automatic, burst, or automatic modes. It is fed by a metallic link belt and has dual-feed capability. The term "chain gun" derives from the use of a roller chain that drives the bolt back and forth. The standard rate of fire is 200 rounds per minute. The weapon has an effective range of 3,000 metres (9,800 ft), depending on the type of ammunition used.

Hey. Try shooting from that when you have to calculate both the time the bullets would take to get to the target. But also your ships velocity, because bullets actually acquire the velocity the ship has. Add all of that you don't know all of them, and the jiggle, you get this this much misses. I think you'll be even worse at this.

Wasn't in the navy, army vet here. Served as a bradley mechanic and the main gun on the M2A3 Bradley is a bushmaster 25mm M242 gun. Very capable weapon.

For those who are doubtful about them not scoring hits, its really difficult to score hits in sea conditions, you are moving up, down and sideways , so is the target, and you've got wind to take care as well.

Isn’t this an autocannon? As I remember the classification for any ballistic weapon system that has an automatic round cycling and loading mechanism which shoots a projectile that’s 20mm or more in diameter is technically considered an autocannon.

You would be surprised what the Navy dumps in the ocean if them dumping brass surprises you.
They can't be expected to save the shells and cart them around until they reach port. Space is at a premium on military ships. I'm pretty sure they don't load their own rounds on the boat, so there is no reason to recover spent casings. All ordnance is supplied by manufacturers and supplied to each ship.
