I learned some great methods while researching ticks in the field. Tuck your pants into your boots. Ticks climb up til they find a good spot so tucking in keeps them from getting inside your pant legs. Use duct tape to get seed ticks off your clothes or body. Here's the most important tip. They are super sensitive to dessication which is why they are more common in heavy vegetation and leaf litter where it's more moist. Do not wash your clothes first. They'll just detach and wait or even stay on your clothes. Dry them. They will die quick in the dry heat of your dryer. Do it on high for 20 minutes to be sure you got them. Love your vids!!!
Jono Major Nice additions to the video...thanks for sharing! - Craig
Complete bs, I have had them get into my shoes and crawl down towards my toes
Some great advise, will definitely be checking that out and appreciate you taking the time to share this ~Peace~
Zed Outdoors Thanks for the support and taking the time to comment! ~Craig
Good info!
Excellent info brother! Really appreciate it, so timely for me. Nicely delivered too. Deet doesn't seem to work as well for me as I'd like, at least for skeeters. I assume this stuff is good for that too? I'm all over this, getting some asap.
excellent video buddy, you're doing god's work here
A couple of years ago I was hiking through a field of tall grass, about thigh high, I was wearing my USMC all leather boots laced up to the top with socks on and when I checked my feed that evening I had a tick between my toes. So 'protective' clothing is not always enough with out a repellent of some kind.
Thanks for creating the video, I learned alot from watching this. I will certainly use the techniques and products shown on the video.
Joe Thompson Great, I am glad you got some good info out of it. I certainly helps you on your next trip to the outdoors. - Craig
Great post! People will really benefit from it. Been doing the light clothes and long pants and sleeves thing for years along with avoiding tick areas (when possible) and staying aware by doing regular inspections and letting no sensation on skin (especially the back of my neck) go uninspected. That is the system with no chemical assistance and is pretty effective, with proper and continuous diligence, in my experience. However, with all the diseases, and the strain of being in constant battle with ticks, I have treated my tramping clothes and shoes with Permethrin this year. Found one tick so far. It was on my water bottle on the bike in one of those tick areas waiting for my return. They have that knack of scent tracking and waiting for you to return in my experience. Seen them waiting on tent zippers and other places I have previously touched. Stay aware out there.
MrGeiermann Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts! ~Craig
Excellent concise info Craig. Thanks for the video. I have heard good things about Sawyer products in the past and their ability to thwart bugs but have never tried them. Their water filters are a must have though!
Reagan L. You betcha, I carry the sawyer mini, everywhere I go. - Craig
Great info Bro to know we don't have a lot of ticks up this way but they are starting to show up in places so this is knowledge is got to have in the back pocket...Thanks for sharing...
FSBushcraft You are welcome, as always we appreciate your support and words of encouragement brother. - Craig
deet is for skin, permethrin is for clothing. there are permethrin products for skin applications so it's not "the death of you"; depends on the concentration.
He wasn't talking about other stuff. He was talking about the spray. So wtf are you talking about
Cute doggo!!!!
Hi there! Great vid!
Does this stuff effect clothing over time? I got expensive fjällräven pants and wonder what effect it will have.
Thanks!
Don Suomi Great question. I have not had any ill effects to clothing after using it several times. However, I am not using it on those type of pants. So I cannot give you a solid answer on that one. I have used it on various fabrics though cotton, poly, polyblends, wool...with no negative discoloration or breakdown of the fibers. - Craig
does permethrin actually repel the ticks? I thought it just kills them. It's the same stuff that's in lice shampoo.
Good info here . Do these products need to soak in ? I am curious about the application to tent rainflys and backpacks , both are water resistant and I usually use a heavy spray of Atsko once a year (I thinks works well btw and inexpensive). I ask becouse I have never used any of these products and would like any added protection without wasting money
It's a very good question. I've used it on tents around the seams and zippers. The only bugs that come in are the ones we bring in. I believe my tent is some type of waterproof plastic or vinyl material. The permethrin spray doesn't do any damage.
Reading the title, wouldn't the best thing be to simply avoid any outdoor expert that was infested with ticks? :)
+Bob_the_Bomb That would involve most all of Kentucky in the Summertime. So....I guess you could stay indoors, but that's not my thing. Thanks for watching here at Dan's Depot! Check out my personal channel as well ruclips.net/user/naturereliance ~Craig, Nature Reliance School
+DansDepot sorry that was a joke - your title can be read two ways :)
+Bob_the_Bomb I see :).
That's why the expert is covered in ticks. They recommend deet.
When i started bow hunting, bugs were a major issue i never had to deal with during the colder firearm seasons. Started spraying sawyer on my bug suits socks, gloves and head wraps and my tick/biting fly issues disappeared immediately. The stuff is solid as steel.
+rob clay I'm glad to hear it's working for you. Thanks for watching! ~Craig
so if i treat my backpack with the permethrin it is not known if it (after drying) will affect the food in the backpack.
+k. Julian I would keep my food in a plastic bag (not touching the backpack). I'm comfortable with this, but use your best judgement. Thanks for watching! Check out my personal channel as well ruclips.net/user/naturereliance. ~ Craig,Nature Reliance School
Why didn't I watch this 2 weeks ago?
since moving back to Arkansas I haven't even gone in the weeds or the woods, and still been pulling 3 ticks off me everyday. my legs are so tore upfrom them and the itchy bumps are driving me crazy. I might just start bathing in this insecticide poison
fuck
Dan, I was wondering if I should get 0.5 percent permethrin to kill ticks or a higher percentage?
sunil maheshwariI find the 0.5% to be plenty. Also, Dan has been gone for some time now. I'm the bearded guy in all the videos :). Thanks for watching! ~Craig
DansDepot thanks man
sunil maheshwari n
What do you use for your dog?
MotherOfManyHorses we use frontline+..it works well :)
DansDepot Thanks
+MotherOfManyHorses Frontline worked for a few years, then they changed the formulation and it didn't work. Heard they changed it again and it works now, but they lost my trust. In the meantime I found Absorbine's UltraShield. It's much cheaper and works great.
I have used UltraShield for many years. Waterproof, effective and long lasting. Spray it and forget it. I spray my dog on the 1st and 15th of each month during tick season. We hike in tick infested areas every day and she is in the water every day yet none on her.
+duxdawg Thanks. I use the UltraShield for my horse for the same reason. Never thought about it for dogs. ;)
I walk my bloodhound in a deer infested area every day. Lots of deer ticks. I have never had lymes disease, or any other tick borne diseases. I wear kaki colored pants and stop to look at them about every three minutes. They are easy to spot, even the little seed ticks. I intend to start spraying these pants with permethrin. But one thing I don't understand. Why would you spray your hat with permethrin? Ticks don't jump or fall from trees. They stay close to the ground on plants and grab on to your pants, socks or shoes as you walk by. I've never had one on my hat.
Why not both?
Plus DEET can ruin tents, waterproofing etc.
+415 Mazer We don't recommend uses DEET for many reasons. Thanks for watching! ~Craig, Nature Reliance School

Do you put anything on exposed skin or only use this on the clothes?
+hollynla Only put this on your clothes. Also, I have found it is best to put it on and let it dry for several days before you intend to use the clothing. Thanks for watching here at Dan's Depot! Please check out my personal channel as well ruclips.net/user/naturereliance. ~Craig, Nature Reliance School
I can tell you that with wearing shorts in the summer, you will need to put something on to protect the exposed skin. We have since learned this through experience. I have found that picaridin works good or I recently tried using rose geranium essential oil, undiluted, a drop on each ankle, behind the knees, and on each wrist. So far it has worked. We are using the oil on the dogs also.
The rose geranium oil supposedly has a scent that ticks (and some other bugs) don't like. I have so far, only applied a single drop in each area I mentioned. You don't have to rub it in, it's just for the scent. Same with dogs, it doesn't have to get on their skin, just getting on their fur is enough. If you sweat or get wet, you should reapply. Otherwise, we have just applied it on ourselves prior to getting near the woods and putting it on the dogs each morning. We live on heavily wooded land and the ticks are horrible this year.
Deet doesn't work. Ticks still get on me even after spraying
will also give your cat liver failure so keep well away from the stuff if you also have a cat .
fathead adolf barry what about dogd
im wanting something for me dog :) he dont like ticks either
I hate ticks 10/20/22
Thanks for info, but permethrin is not natural, even if you only put it on clothes, when you wash them, permethrin goes into water. Best to used essential oils like cedar & peppermint.
No. Not when you're you're dealing with lyme disease sweetheart, you need the heavy stuff to protect you.
@@nodiggity8497 True....I had to turn to that last year....fleas just wouldn't go away....but I use it sparingly. Dangerous stuff.
@@Shiryone
Not nearly as dangerous as Lyme Disease.
Life destroying . . .☆
Only Repellent I use is REPEL Tick Defense Also Works Great Against Mosquitoes" Contains No Deet! Believe me this Stuff WORKS I live in Louisiana where out State bird is a Mosquito" 😅😂
OK now I know how to to avoid ticks from an outdoor expert, can you now tell me how to avoid ticks from deer ?? hahah .... yeah I said it !!!!!
new tick diesies just out this year already hit Ohio kills 1 and 10 and permanently disabled 5 + 10 it is called Pow
Permethrin is not safe for dogs and cats. Quote: Is it safe to use Permethrin on dogs? Despite that natural claim, not at all
Don't spray it inside your clothing.
Expert? The stuff isn't safe. Your going to sweat and its going to come through the clothes onto your skin. Hard to tell long term effect of that.
Sorry but, it only works for few days.
