    I took that tip from you about hanging the water bottle. Probably the best tip of the video. When I was a kid we used to bring a orange juice bottle on long trips with us to pee in so we didn't have to pull over. We called it a "peepee jar". So now I hang a peepee jar (plastic water bottle) from my ridge line. (for you younger folks out there orange juice was delivered with milk by a milkman. You left the empties out on the porch for the man to swap out with full bottles. Those were the days)

      I told my kids about the milkman the iceman and getting coal delivered down the chute and into the coal bin in the cellar. they looked at me like I was a dinosaur. I didn't have the heart to tell them about the days of black and white TV, and the one channel we had signing off at 11 pm. I was afraid they might think I was an alien or something.

    I always thought the descender rings method was cool until I saw Derek Hansen’s video on the Becket hitch. Faster, easily adjustable without hardware. Once I saw it I’ve never tied anything else since.

    Good review. You can't beat those repel rings for hanging a hammock. They make it fast and easy to adjust. I have a HED with a super shelter. I love it. I keep the super shelter attached and store everything in a dry bag. I do keep my tarp in the snake skins. Thanks for sharing. Enjoy & be safe!

    The Hennessy's are great. I'd recommend them for anyone who hasn't camped in a hammock before as they are so easy to set up. My first hammock was a Henessy. Since then I've moved on to a Warbonnet blackbird as I find that is a little more comfortable and a bit more customizable, but it is more complicated to set up if you haven't had much practice.

    Great video. I have the Hennessy Ultralight Backpacker set-up and love it. I always put the rain cover on my pack and then strap it to one of the trees. (Just another option for anybody wanting to keep their pack off the ground and conveniently accessible)

    If you're worried about getting your gear wet you could hang another inexpensive hammock below the one your sleeping in and the fly will keep the rain off your gear and the second hammock would keep your gear off the ground,

    I love my Hennessy Hammock so far, its super easy to set up and very durable. Awesome craftsmanship. The material used is extremely durable and I have not once thought it would tear or accidentally puncture. Personally, however, I prefer my Grand Trunk/Eno setup because of its versatility and pack size. Happy Hangin'!

    One other thing I've found useful about sleeping bags; get the longer size. One of the sales guys at REI suggested it. I tried using the longer size in a 40 degree bag. The extra length makes getting in and to a lesser extent, out of the bag while in a hammock much easier.

    hey Craig ik that you have been doing this awhile so i had a question, i'm just getting started with my bug out bag and for my shelter i'm using the "Field Expedient Lean-To" method with the single tarp...i'm going to test my gear in a few weeks so i just wanted your opinion to see if this is a good shelter or not

    I see you are making the same mistake with the rings i did...That made breaking down or putting slack in your line harder ... The mistake is after threading the line the second time through the ring you and I went over instead of Under the line...If you go to the inside you form a loop that keeps the rings together in Parallel with your line between them...Try It

    @DansDepot I think you'd be interested in the Nube system by SMr (Sierra Madre Research) Essentially a little more, maybe 50-100 bucks, to get everything but it's got rainfly, bug net, and storage all integrated. Great video, if I didn't rock SMr gear, I'd do Hennessy. It's the second best system I've found. Cheers.

    My sleeping bag is an extreme bag for really cold weather, and thus it is made with the zipper only running half way down the length of the bag. This makes hammock camping a struggle. Do you have any creative ideas on how I can work out this problem. All I've come up with is like you did initially when you got the hammock, which is to get in the sleeping bag first and then slide into the hammock.

    • @studfemme
      @studfemme 9 лет назад +1

      Solveig Aakeberg I have a Hennesy and as a larger person I wanted to make sure I never slept cold. I bought the Big Agnes bag that has the pocket for the inflating air pad. The trick that work for me is to put the inflated bag/pad combo halfway into the hammock, then I sit into it and pull the rest of the bag in by the sides and voila I am in the center of the pad/ unzipped bag and I can just tuck my legs in and I am good to go. I do the same in reverse to get out - and like shown in the video I keep a small ground tarp scrap on the ground and drop my sandals/crocs camp shoes as I pull my feet up.

    Craig, have you spent a lot of nights using the carabiner/ring suspension system? After seeing your demo, I was ready to use that system on my explorer deluxe. However, a call to Hennessy and they cautioned that it may cause unusual wear on the cord. Any thoughts? Thanks

    • @OmegaGear

    Is the scout zip pretty comfortable? The website says the height limit is 5'8 but I'm 6'1...and can you sleep asymmetrically in the scout?

    • @OmegaGear
      @OmegaGear  9 лет назад

      Greg Kato Ours is an Explorer. Our son is 6'2, he sleeps very comfortably in his :). Our Son in law is 6'5, and he also said that he likes sleeping in his. Getting the right position takes practice.....some people find putting their lower legs and feet slightly over the center to one side and their shoulders and head opposite to this helps balance and flatten the hammock. Here is a link to what we have amzn.to/1c86xm0 Hope this helps ~Craig

    • @coastalcop
      @coastalcop 10 лет назад +1

      Not as easy as for guys but here is what I set up for females on hiking/camping trips. Soft seal facemask (like you used on an EMS truck with 12 inches of tubing (not surgical latex, clear tubing like you would find in an aquarium). is attached to what is normally the intake port on the mask . Tape exit seal on the mask if so equipped.
      Use: Place mask firmly against "private area" with nose side of mask up, guide tube to area where you want fluid to go (don't forget that gravity doesn't change)
      Answer the call of nature, and then make sure that mask and line are clear when you are done.
      with a little practice you can also use this setup on the trail without having to drop trousers.
      I always wanted to see " Jim" , "Bob", "Sally" written in the snow ;)
