I've always liked your reviews, but this one needs redoing maybe? Firstly, When you used orbit mode, it did as instructed (it did an orbit), if you also draw a box around a point of interest, the camera will lock on that. Secondly, I think you altered the aperture by tapping on the clouds on your phone screen and that's why it was dark and not enough contrast when you tried smart track. And, finally, you must have had the (Update Dynamic Home Point in Smart Track) switched on in settings, that's why it didn't return to the landing pad, there is also a switch in there to allow the drone to fly backwards in smart track mode. Hope this helps :-)
Hey Charles thanks. I may touch on those points again briefly when I do the follow up range test if I have enough power left on the battery. It seemed like the side track mode did not move forward or back, only the trace follow mode. You'd also think that the software would auto adjust to the point your trying to track by default which is standard for other drones. Maybe something FIMI can improve.

In your defense, Orbit mode should default to Center camera alignment. Not sure what Fimi is thinking with Free as the default. Yes, the requirement to set the center point for orbit is inconvenient, but perhaps acceptable at the price-point. But the confused GPS RTH spot after using the Beta Tracking is definitely a bug in the firmware -- so thanks for revealing that issue to us all. [EDIT] Well, now that I think about it, perhaps the 'home point' gets updated somehow during tracking as necessary for hikes, etc. But that's not clear and I still think it's akin to a firmware bug.
@@DustinDunnill I know it's kinda hidden, but that's how Smart Track > Lock > Orbit works. It's not going to be as steady as the dedicated Orbit mode due to tracking variations, but it's not as wonky to setup either. For instance, there's no requirement to fly over the center point, etc. with Smart Track > Lock > Orbit. Like I mentioned elsewhere, I use this 'Lock' mode copiously (with or without invoking the Orbit sub-function) below 100' AGL with the X8 SE because it allows all kinds of creative shots (reveals, flybys, variable orbits, etc). This is so useful, that I'm contemplating cancelling my Mavic Mini order, since the Mini only 'tracks' in a couple of the Quick Shot sub-modes, making it far more difficult to capture dynamic shots due to manual gimbal management.
I believe you can set the drone to face the center or maintain the heading while in orbit mode (on the last settings screen). Not sure why facing center is not the default.

Dustin you remain u tubes best drone reviewer period. Seems like they fixed the funky blue coloring. I always shoot in manual so I could care less about the intelligent flight modes, orbit, tracking etc. Its all about video image quality and gimbal smoothness for me. Seems like for 500 bucks this may be a nice backup to my dji drones.

Although it isn't especially sharp, the Mavic Mini 2.7K camera looks sharper and generally better image quality than this (supposedly) 4K camera. However, the Mini does not support flight plans with waypoints and points of interest -- apparently, the software is crippled to avoid competing with their own more expensive drones -- which I didn't realize or I wouldn't have bought it. I'm thinking of returning it and getting something else, but it won't be this drone since the video is disappointing and the programmed flights are flaky.

This will have better flight performance as it a bigger drone and will cope with wind better . The Mavic mini is missing the best DJI feature which are the tracking featurs but it is still a exceptional drone and represent the best small travel drone
Hello dustin. As for the orbit mode on the fimi x8.I learned about what's in the center, you have to put it in a box. And then the orbit mode should work fine.

9:40 the thing you did wrong and it didn't track you was that you should make the gimbal look at you (the center) and then before you start it you must press center instead of free at the gimbal. Hope i made my self clear😆.
I pre-ordered Fimi X8 se 2020 for $399.00 Bangood. For that price point 1/4 price of mavic 2 zoom. All I care about is good video, picture quality and ease of use not interested in flight mode. Fimi looks good to me though.
Camera picture and video quality are very good at this drone, basic flight also very nice stable. Except additional functions like tracking, orbit mode not works as should I think.
Aloha Dustin! The disturbances in the FPV exist with every cellphone. I have the Huawei Mate 10 Pro. The same problem. If you look at other YT videos from FIMI, that's the same problem everywhere. Despite app updates Fimi does not get it. If you fly with Orbit, you have to press the Center button. Then you are in the middle of the video. You had set free. In the app you have to set Precise Landing and the orange side of the landing pad up. Already the Fimi lands exactly. Greetings from Germany to Haweii
I find when you are tracking against a uniformed color, like grass, that if you make the box small enough to say, cover just your black hoodie it works a little better, just so there's no grass in the tracking box to confuse it. I've done quite of bit of tracking my vehicle with good success.

Hi, am I the only one who thinks the image quality is terrible? Or is it the clouds? I'm after a drone and can't decide between DJI Mavic Mini/air (fly more combo) or FIMI X8se. Will appreciate if you guys can help me choose one. Thanks. Note: This will be my first drone. My preferences are (besides price ~1k) 1. Image/Video quality, 2. Agree. Thought there was occassional blur in image, as if camera was slow to refocus. In addition (assuming camera was on auto setting), sudden changes in brightness would be unacceptable to even us rookies and novices alike who might be the market audience for this product.
Yes, panning rapidly over the grass produced pixelation and occasional jittering. At 100 mbps I was expecting better. Also the slight horizon tilt is annoying (perhaps a gimbal calibration is required). Otherwise, the 4K video looked good, especially considering the price. It seems to be pretty fast, too. Plenty of others have commented on how to get the camera to center on you in Tracking modes. Thanks for posting this review.
I just bought one of these for my bro, though it didn't arrive in time for Xmas. He used a Phantom IV a couple of years ago for a video job, so I hope he'll be pleased with this machine. Personally I prefer RC gliders. As I was buying it I realized that he'll have to join the BMFA and pay his £9 extra to make it all legal.

There are options for it return to home on low battery & land on low battery also there is a dynamic home point setting. Just getting to know my way round settings myself. Video quality has definitely improved.
Is this the 2020 version or the 2019 or 2018? Any idea if the 2018/2019 version would update the same as the 2020 version? I found a killer deal on the 2019(?) version and am impressed with this compared to the Bugs 4w that only sports a jello-like 2k camera and 900-1200m range (reliably). Thanks for making the video.
Hi Dustin. Bought a Fimi X8 off the back of your recommendations and it is a great machine or at least was. We took it on holiday to New Zealand and on returning home neither the drone nor the controller would boot. The battery test buttons work but holding the buttons to boot does nothing. I fear that a security scanner somewhere on route has wiped the firmware in both the controller and the drone. I am waiting for a support response from Fimi ....
Man quite simply until all these other companys that keep producing these drones get their act together and finish the job before they release so its not beta this or beta that AND the drone actually does what its supposed to, its DJI all the way for me.
Aloha, Dustin. Another quick comment and question regarding the Fimi X8 SE: You commented several times about occasional 'fuzziness' (my word for it) viewing the video on your screen as you filmed. I thought I noticed that as well; in fact, at 4K, it seemed inferior to me than video you have filmed using the Mavic Mini in 2.7k. So, did the actual footage display the same occasional blur as you saw in real time? It's almost as if the lens has difficulty quickly refocusing at times. If so, I'm thinking this Fimi camera has some more improvement to be made. Your thoughts?
I may have been using an SD memory card that wasn't fast enough in this flight. Seems to need the Extreme Pro version but this was just and extreme 🤷♂️
just asking, shouldent you draw the rectangle for tracking more accurate over you? in this video you cover max 20 % of whats in the rectangle. Thats why it wont track! ;-)

Appreciate your leveling tutorial but its not what I mean. I’ve done this many times, my horizon is perfectly level when I start. I encourage you to try it yourself. Start your drone and go to certain altitude (your horizon will be ok) but then perform level pan 180 degrees. Watch your horizon after. Unless my drone is different the horizon will be off.
I'm watching this video for the 3rd time. I just preordered the 2020 version and I'm impatiently waiting for it to arrive and trying to learn all i can, now. I am very impressed with the depth of your reviews, and how you can hold my attention for a 30 minute video. I've also watched a handful of your other videos on other drones, but it was this review that made me decide to get the Fimi X8. I'm curious, from your perspective, will I be happy with this drone as a hobby flyer? Also, I like to visit state parks and other places with natural beauty. Kind of the whole idea I had for buying this drone is just old things from a new perspective. I really wanted one of the Mavic series of drones, but they are just cost prohibitive for me. The price of this drone is very attractive for what you get, I am just concerned with all the complaints I've read about this issue or that issue.
I'll be reviewing the 2020 version soon and it should be a step up in almost every way from the original X8SE. I think you'll enjoy it for your hobby use. Check the drone rules for the parks you want to fly in. I've heard some horror stories of huge fines issued by park rangers. 🍻

I set up my Banggood account with my email address I use for spam risk sites and since BG is Chinese, I thought that would be prudent. I paid using my PayPal account under a different email address so they canceled out of concern for fraud, so I guess I shouldn't be mad at them for being safe. A great video Dustin! I think the bad video compression on the FPV and in the recording is from a low speed SD card. The whole time you had a message on your phone saying that the SD card is Low Speed. I just watched your original range test and the video and FPV video both looked better months ago. Just a thought!

Hey Dustin is it a 12mp still photo camera? I do like the remotes capability to take an ipad mini easily. Also WB grading by touch is fantastic. Is that black part at front above camera not forward Obstacle Avoidence? Just shiny black plastic. Orbit usually needs to have a box painted over you first! Captain Drone did orbit ok on his review
Yes it's kinda crazy that the Smart Track modes are still in Beta. But the 'Lock' sub-mode (within Smart Track) is highly useful because it allows the pilot to lock the camera-gimbal on an object while flying manually. This allows you to create dramatic reveal shots, flybys and orbits while concentrating on flying and safety. This is my primary mode with the X8SE below 100' AGL.
Nothing agains Xiaomi, however my x8 is now 20 mtr below water in Gulf of Mexico. Was flying it from anchored ship, that was a flight nr 30 or about it, in more or less same environment (only more swell in that day), after taking off it lost gps signal (with 12 a16 satelites) and after fee tries to land manually it stopped responding correctly on sticks and finally listed heavy on one side and drifted in to the water. So that was 3 rd flight in same day, dont know what was a problem, or magnetism or vsl movement on the waves. Probably on land it will last longer. Overall it was great drone, easy to use and goog quality photo and video. From now only DJI, hope it will warn me when it dosnt feel well.

So what do you think the very best drone for the money is? $500 is the very very upper end that I want to go. I was looking at the mjz 4w considering they just came out with a 4k model and it's only around 200. But someone recommended this one.
Does the bottom sensors really work? Have you tried putting a hand under the bottom sensor during hovering if the drone reacts by moving up keeping distance from the hand cos the recent dji mini does a good job on this on your recent dji mini review. If you were to choose as a first time flyer moving up as a hobbyist just one between the fimi x8 se and dji mavic mini, which one would you choose and what made you choose that drone? Thanks!

@@DustinDunnill Parrot has done a TON of enhancements and new functionality to the Anafi since it first came out in July 2018...If you do a re-review of the Anafi I'd strongly suggest that you review the release notes in advance of doing the review otherwise you won't be doing it justice. Hey Dustin, I have also started getting glitches in the FPV, just in the past week or so. I've never had any problems with it in the 4 months I've owned it, till now. Sometimes it gets pixelated, freezes or goes black and I have to close the Fimi app and restart it. Tested on 3 different devices, Ipad mini 4, Galaxy Note 8 and a Huawei Mediapad M5 and it happens on all 3. Even tried it with no memory card in and it happens. It's a very uneasy feeling when I have to shutdown the app while the X8 is in the air.
In this price range 500 and under.. what do you recommend for fun flight and decent video.. I was looking at the FIMI or possibly the Anafi as it shoots great video.. is there another contended I am missing?

I have the same glitching on my galaxy s9plus as you do from time to time. I agree the beta should be over after all this time. I don't really use those but some I did was not that intuitive either. The only one that worked well for me was the droney function. Many have horizon issues though they have improved. mine never was that problematic. It flys great but for me the fpv isn't always that far out depending on the direction I go, I'm sure it depends on the wifi in the area. As it goes ya get what u pay for.

However, the Mini does not support flight plans with waypoints and points of interest -- apparently, the software is crippled to avoid competing with their own more expensive drones -- which I didn't realize or I wouldn't have bought it. I'm thinking of returning it and getting something else, but it won't be this drone since the video is disappointing and the programmed flights are flaky.

This will have better flight performance as it a bigger drone and will cope with wind better . The Mavic mini is missing the best DJI feature which are the tracking featurs but it is still a exceptional drone and represent the best small travel drone

Hello dustin. As for the orbit mode on the fimi x8.I learned about what's in the center, you have to put it in a box. And then the orbit mode should work fine.

9:40 the thing you did wrong and it didn't track you was that you should make the gimbal look at you (the center) and then before you start it you must press center instead of free at the gimbal. Hope i made my self clear😆.

I pre-ordered Fimi X8 se 2020 for $399.00 Bangood. For that price point 1/4 price of mavic 2 zoom. All I care about is good video, picture quality and ease of use not interested in flight mode. Fimi looks good to me though.

Camera picture and video quality are very good at this drone, basic flight also very nice stable. Except additional functions like tracking, orbit mode not works as should I think.

The disturbances in the FPV exist
with every cellphone. I have the Huawei Mate 10 Pro. The same problem. If you look at other YT videos from FIMI, that's the same problem everywhere.
Despite app updates Fimi does not get it.
If you fly with Orbit, you have to press the Center button. Then you are in the middle of the video.
You had set free.
In the app you have to set Precise Landing and the orange side of the landing pad up. Already the Fimi lands exactly.

I find when you are tracking against a uniformed color, like grass, that if you make the box small enough to say, cover just your black hoodie it works a little better, just so there's no grass in the tracking box to confuse it. I've done quite of bit of tracking my vehicle with good success.

Both similar. The Mini is so small and light that it is much less intimidating but is limited in advanced features.

Agree. Thought there was occassional blur in image, as if camera was slow to refocus. In addition (assuming camera was on auto setting), sudden changes in brightness would be unacceptable to even us rookies and novices alike who might be the market audience for this product.
Yes, panning rapidly over the grass produced pixelation and occasional jittering. At 100 mbps I was expecting better. Also the slight horizon tilt is annoying (perhaps a gimbal calibration is required). Otherwise, the 4K video looked good, especially considering the price. It seems to be pretty fast, too. Plenty of others have commented on how to get the camera to center on you in Tracking modes. Thanks for posting this review.

Don't know if it matters, but when you did the orbit and went out to the radius, the camera wasn't pointing at you when you pushed go.
I just bought one of these for my bro, though it didn't arrive in time for Xmas. He used a Phantom IV a couple of years ago for a video job, so I hope he'll be pleased with this machine. Personally I prefer RC gliders. As I was buying it I realized that he'll have to join the BMFA and pay his £9 extra to make it all legal.

I did not put my fastest card in. Use a SanDisk extreme pro to have enough record speed.

Is this the 2020 version or the 2019 or 2018? Any idea if the 2018/2019 version would update the same as the 2020 version? I found a killer deal on the 2019(?) version and am impressed with this compared to the Bugs 4w that only sports a jello-like 2k camera and 900-1200m range (reliably). Thanks for making the video.
This is the first older version. They have a separate app specifically for the 2020 version so I don't think so 🍻
Hi Dustin. Bought a Fimi X8 off the back of your recommendations and it is a great machine or at least was. We took it on holiday to New Zealand and on returning home neither the drone nor the controller would boot. The battery test buttons work but holding the buttons to boot does nothing. I fear that a security scanner somewhere on route has wiped the firmware in both the controller and the drone. I am waiting for a support response from Fimi ....

Man quite simply until all these other companys that keep producing these drones get their act together and finish the job before they release so its not beta this or beta that AND the drone actually does what its supposed to, its DJI all the way for me.

Aloha, Dustin. Another quick comment and question regarding the Fimi X8 SE: You commented several times about occasional 'fuzziness' (my word for it) viewing the video on your screen as you filmed. I thought I noticed that as well; in fact, at 4K, it seemed inferior to me than video you have filmed using the Mavic Mini in 2.7k. So, did the actual footage display the same occasional blur as you saw in real time? It's almost as if the lens has difficulty quickly refocusing at times. If so, I'm thinking this Fimi camera has some more improvement to be made. Your thoughts?
I may have been using an SD memory card that wasn't fast enough in this flight. Seems to need the Extreme Pro version but this was just and extreme 🤷♂️

just asking, shouldent you draw the rectangle for tracking more accurate over you? in this video you cover max 20 % of whats in the rectangle. Thats why it wont track! ;-)
Pretty sure I did it every way.
With Trace you have to enable "Backwards flying" in the setting. Then drone can fly backwards during trace.
Yes but doesn't seem to follow in any direction but sideways in side follow mode which was what I was in going under it.

Appreciate your leveling tutorial but its not what I mean. I’ve done this many times, my horizon is perfectly level when I start. I encourage you to try it yourself. Start your drone and go to certain altitude (your horizon will be ok) but then perform level pan 180 degrees. Watch your horizon after. Unless my drone is different the horizon will be off.
It is quite interesting that Hubsan was able to work out level horizon perfectly in my latest re-review of ZINO but FIMI has not perfected it yet 🤔
I'm watching this video for the 3rd time. I just preordered the 2020 version and I'm impatiently waiting for it to arrive and trying to learn all i can, now. I am very impressed with the depth of your reviews, and how you can hold my attention for a 30 minute video. I've also watched a handful of your other videos on other drones, but it was this review that made me decide to get the Fimi X8. I'm curious, from your perspective, will I be happy with this drone as a hobby flyer? Also, I like to visit state parks and other places with natural beauty. Kind of the whole idea I had for buying this drone is just old things from a new perspective. I really wanted one of the Mavic series of drones, but they are just cost prohibitive for me. The price of this drone is very attractive for what you get, I am just concerned with all the complaints I've read about this issue or that issue.
I'll be reviewing the 2020 version soon and it should be a step up in almost every way from the original X8SE. I think you'll enjoy it for your hobby use. Check the drone rules for the parks you want to fly in. I've heard some horror stories of huge fines issued by park rangers. 🍻

I set up my Banggood account with my email address I use for spam risk sites and since BG is Chinese, I thought that would be prudent. I paid using my PayPal account under a different email address so they canceled out of concern for fraud, so I guess I shouldn't be mad at them for being safe. A great video Dustin! I think the bad video compression on the FPV and in the recording is from a low speed SD card. The whole time you had a message on your phone saying that the SD card is Low Speed. I just watched your original range test and the video and FPV video both looked better months ago. Just a thought!

Yes it's kinda crazy that the Smart Track modes are still in Beta. But the 'Lock' sub-mode (within Smart Track) is highly useful because it allows the pilot to lock the camera-gimbal on an object while flying manually. This allows you to create dramatic reveal shots, flybys and orbits while concentrating on flying and safety. This is my primary mode with the X8SE below 100' AGL.
I did same test to my FIMI X8se got same problem with spin and orbit
Nothing agains Xiaomi, however my x8 is now 20 mtr below water in Gulf of Mexico. Was flying it from anchored ship, that was a flight nr 30 or about it, in more or less same environment (only more swell in that day), after taking off it lost gps signal (with 12 a16 satelites) and after fee tries to land manually it stopped responding correctly on sticks and finally listed heavy on one side and drifted in to the water. So that was 3 rd flight in same day, dont know what was a problem, or magnetism or vsl movement on the waves. Probably on land it will last longer. Overall it was great drone, easy to use and goog quality photo and video. From now only DJI, hope it will warn me when it dosnt feel well.

Does the bottom sensors really work? Have you tried putting a hand under the bottom sensor during hovering if the drone reacts by moving up keeping distance from the hand cos the recent dji mini does a good job on this on your recent dji mini review. If you were to choose as a first time flyer moving up as a hobbyist just one between the fimi x8 se and dji mavic mini, which one would you choose and what made you choose that drone? Thanks!

Hi Dustin was watching this still deciding but noticed when you opened the spiral menu at 12.40 min the rth wasn’t activated not shore if it matters but does that mean during your spiral if something happened it could have flown away not having rth activated ?
It shouldn't fly away no matter what your doing. Should come back if it really thinks it needs to. Especially with the newer firmware updates 🍻

@@DustinDunnill Parrot has done a TON of enhancements and new functionality to the Anafi since it first came out in July 2018...If you do a re-review of the Anafi I'd strongly suggest that you review the release notes in advance of doing the review otherwise you won't be doing it justice. Hey Dustin, I have also started getting glitches in the FPV, just in the past week or so. I've never had any problems with it in the 4 months I've owned it, till now. Sometimes it gets pixelated, freezes or goes black and I have to close the Fimi app and restart it. Tested on 3 different devices, Ipad mini 4, Galaxy Note 8 and a Huawei Mediapad M5 and it happens on all 3. Even tried it with no memory card in and it happens. It's a very uneasy feeling when I have to shutdown the app while the X8 is in the air.

Yes, latest firmware and apps installed. I even tried using old versions of the android app, on the Note 8 same problems.

Great video, but I think you could have concentrated on the FPV screen rather than having it PIP, especially for the smart flight modes.
I have the same glitching on my galaxy s9plus as you do from time to time. I agree the beta should be over after all this time. I don't really use those but some I did was not that intuitive either. The only one that worked well for me was the droney function. Many have horizon issues though they have improved. mine never was that problematic. It flys great but for me the fpv isn't always that far out depending on the direction I go, I'm sure it depends on the wifi in the area. As it goes ya get what u pay for.

Only thing holding me back from the Mini, is lack of manual settings.
I would love to be able the Fstop at 2.x wide open, for certain cinematic close range shots, with good background separation.
