I was really interested in this drone. The only issue was the gimbal/horizon not level. When I read title of the video I thought now I can buy the Fimi. But after watching the video and hearing that the calibration is not unlocked and that Fimi might not unlock it, and then reading one of the comments about how it took two days for them to unlock it... Forget it. Thanks for the video. It's a great video. It explained everything I needed to know.
I just got the calibration unlocked for my SE 2020. Did the calibrations. Haven't flown yet. Will be interesting to see if the stupid horizon is stable now.
Yeah I said that... 2:25 but have also proved holding it works fine as long as you are steady so I am comfortable with how it is represented in this video. Thanks
@@QCGUY snap sorry mate missed that. I just had an bad experience where the imu said calibrated but it resulted really weird values on the .kml(could be wrong about the extension name but this is the file that google earth reads to plot path on the map) this was for the Ryze tello though
Another thing, when I take my cover off the gimbal, I hold the front of the quad in one hand, and use my thumb on the other hand to pop that tab forward and it comes off a lot easier. I push the tab forward and it comes right off. Give it a shot. It doesn't pop off so hard

Absolutely…. You can use that on as many X8’s or any other drones your heart desires. 😂 I think I understand what you mean though. Are you concerned the app will only recognize one and not the other when you switch back and forth or mess up your settings? It will work as your use to and play nice from one quad to the other and back again.
At what percentage % the gimbal of Fimi X8 2020 is likely to work properly and with no cracked horizon just out-of-the-box? I'm asking that before I buy it just to know about.
There’s no magic number unfortunately and there no mine is the same as yours. Some are like completely different quads while others are fairly similar. FIMI and Hubsans are a roll of the dice.... 🎲

From a company and build standpoint FIMI without question is my go to. The only issue with FIMI X8 is the gimbal tilt issue they have had for quite some time but it seems they have finally figured this out. Something to think about still in my opinion. Regardless I would still pick FIMI X8 over Zino 2. 👍🏻
Got this unlocked and performed. I'm actually getting "gimbal not ready" messages that I didn't before (they clear after a few mins) What are your thoughts on using the basic gimbal calibration AFTER this one? Harmless or potentially put it back to previous state? Best informed guess would be what? Also: can you take a quick look; is your gimbal attached at the top with 4 dampers? Mine has 3 - one appears missing. Looks sketchy to me. I am within my replacement period on Amazon. Appreciate if you could check?
All the newest models have 3 not 4 which is something FIMI says is best. Mine have 4... As for the regular calibration it will not hurt and it won't hurt to do the 6 point calibrations again either. If you have done any manual advanced X Y and Z adjustments make sure they are all set back to default zero before calibrations. Thanks

@@damienvaillant4803 Best thin to do is post the video showing it and share it in FIMI groups and with fimi support. I don't have that problem so I can't offer much more than the typical change props, new sd card etc....Sorry
One thing I rarely see, and won't touch myself is the gain control. You can reset it if it makes things worse, but it does make me wonder if this calibration, plus a touch more gain (and perhaps a second run of calibrations after tweaking gain up a hair) would allow the correction to straight horizon happen faster. My X8SE 2020 straightens after 6-10 seconds. That's too slow to be acceptable. 2-4 seconds or better might be the best one could hope for.
Just FYI, the box is needed to ensure the X8 is level. Note the picture in the instructions shows the gimbal over part of the box. If you have arms out or folded, without the box, then the X8 sits at an angle so it will cause a tilted horizon in yaw.
Works fine exactly how I did it. Luck maybe but others pointed out the box early. thanks I have a device that you can’t go wrong with making every axis perfect in a upcoming video.

@@jamd9553 other thing I noticed when trying to install a foam as instructed during calibration, the gimbal emitted some distress sounds from the motors. That will ruin the gimbal after a few tries...
@@joyzz6533 That's why I don't claim it fixes 100% like some do in their video's. It has fixed many and also left many with the same unresolved issue. Mine is golden and I'm not updating from here on with this quad.
@@jamd9553 You aren't the result everyone gets is the important thing here. Just like I'm not the result in having mine fixed but many do. You could have a different issue with your gimbal or it could be something from production that was changed or defective which is why I don't tell anyone this is the total 100% fix for everyone. I don't tell them it's not a fix either! Some times you need to let people try and see for themselves...Thanks

Thanks for this Chris! Your videos are always thorough! My X8 has terrible horizon control, maybe this will help! Sadly, my X8 is not unlocked. I see neither "System Status Code" nor "Drone Calibration" in the maintenance mode screen, so I will have to contact Fimi. Just a couple of points on your video, however. First of all, the front legs are about 3/4" wider overall than the rear legs, so if you rest the drone on it's side on the legs, it will not be level. You need to pack up the rear legs by about 3/8", or hold it level with a good eye. My hands are too shaky to hold it as you did! Secondly, when the drone is placed on a flat surface, it sits on the rear baseplate legs, but the front ones are off the ground/surface by about 3/16", held up by the legs on the front arms. I think that's the main reason Fimi suggest the use of a box under the baseplate legs, rather than gimbal clearance, but if the gimbal rotated in "aileron", it could easily hit the floor. I don't know why they don't just make the baseplate leg covers thicker, so that it sits flat on all six legs. A belated Happy New Year to you, and I hope 2021 is a better one for you!
PS: I found a different version of the gimbal cover in the Fimi Store on Amazon - its almost identical but does not have the release tab sticking up on top, but a wide tab across the front for removal. It's held in place by protrusions that go into the screw holes that face downward on either side of camera. I may buy the other one to compare, but this fits decently and should work well.

Just curios from what I've seen from videos the Fimi X8 horizon starts off level during flights but then gets wonky when yawing the drone...if the drone was mis-calibrated from the factory wouldn't you have a crooked horizon from the beginning of your flight? Thoughts? Did this permanently fix your horizon tilt issue?
@@QCGUY Thanks...Good to know that it fixed the problem in normal mode. Hopefully I won't need to do this for the Fimi Mini. I wonder if that calibration feature will be available on the new streamlined Fimi Mini Fly App. In your video you seemed to indicate that the callibration tools had to be unlocked by Fimi Support. Not sure if you saw my other post about the Gimbal calibration tool that was used in that video I referenced but it sounded like that Gimbal calibration tool didn't require any unlocking and it was different then the one you used. Thoughts when you get the chance.
@@jetmartin9501 some have to and some already came unlocked from what people report. The original X8 just has the IMU calibration and the 3020 has both these. Then there’s the standard calibration all have and the manual adjustments.

If I'm not getting lost in the Fimi 2020 menu windows... after Firmware update FC 1028D... the 'Drone Calibration' (under the Maintenance Mode menu) has lost, not only the 'Calibrate' button but the entire 'Drone Calibration' selection. The only IMU function I can find is under the 'Drone Body Sensor' selection and it only 'Checks IMU'. Mine always says good... so I don't know if a 'bad' check would let you do the 6 sided calibration moves or not..?? Is anyone else is seeing this after their Firmware FC 1028D update...???

Requested the unlocking about a month ago. Tried several times but did not solve the horizon tilt problem. I’m afraid it’s hopeless. Hopefully others have better luck. It’s a shame because the x8 2020 is a good budget drone. Hopefully the upcoming fimi mini will incorporate a refined gimbal.
Did you get it unlocked? I know you said tried several times but how you wrote it leaves a little to the imagination. I was thinking the exact same thing about the mini when I first heard of it. That one is going to be interesting.

I emailed Fimi last week and they unlocked it about two days later. I followed all the steps, but I think my camera moved during the process and didn’t help. Thanks Chris for the tips about the camera cover!
Yes when I first did this I used the foam and it took a few good try’s till it hit me that my cover was the perfect tool. Especially after adding the thin foam sheet.
Thank you... I did some photogrammetry with fimi x8se2022v, then after processing the immage I get wrong altitude/elevation from the photos. For ex. the photo indicates surface elev. at +171 m which is should be +143 m. DJI Phantom just did more acurate at the same location. Is it caused by calibration problem of fimi or this is just fimi limitation ?
After I performed the 6 side drone calibration, and attempted to do the 6 sided gimbal calibration, the drone still had control of the gimbal/camera. Finally figured out that (for me) I had to start the 6 sided gimbal calibration before the drone would let the gimbal/camera become free and available to move, that is when I placed the cover on gimbal/camera. It was not until I started the calibration that the drone let me move and place the camera. Not sure why mine is different (drone 8/2020 mfg. date). Both calibrations completed successfully.
That’s why I don’t call this a fix for all because it’s different for some which in your case was a slight procedure difference. Glad you figured that out on your end . Good job 👍🏻

I just confirmed a difference between the 2018 App; Fimi Navi (Fully Evolved!) and Navi 2020 (Less yet More) Apparently the early app WASN'T fully evolved, and now we have less, yet more. Wonderful. - One "LESS" part other than about 25 grams is software filters. We have General, Vivid B&W & F-Log - but Fully Evolved also had Art, Film & Nostalgia. Saw it in a video and was about to ask you to confirm, having both models, instead just downloaded it and yep. Not a huge deal, but feels like it's less but LESS somehow.

@@championcitabria5057 it’s a IMU calibration which is vital and most come with this feature as it’s needed to calibrate and get it well tuned. They have always had it but chose to keep it locked for some reason. I know it seems they should be perfect out of the box but things like compass calibrations, gimbal calibrations and IMU calibrations have been a thing for a long time. After going through China mail, being tossed like a football and around magnetic objects it’s necessary.

I sent an e-mail to Fimi three weeks ago and they unlocked this calibration to me in less than 24 hours. But the real fact is that this does not solve the horizon tilt issue...
In fact I was in touch with Fimi about the horizon tilt issue, and after having sent them the typical information (blackbox, pictures, and so on), finally they told me to send the drone to China to solve this. They gave me another option that I never understood (in order to solve it by myself), I can share if you want, it includes a picture of the gimbal that I don't know how could I share here

Keep meaning to come back to this video and let people know: Fimi does NOT require your Account and PASSWORD as Chris needed to do with his OG X8SE. Currently all they ask for is the email account used and your: Fimi ID; a 14 character numeric ID that they use to index your account. I realize many folks would balk at handing over a password. Not sure if this is what Chris was referencing when he said "password" or if they changed it, but don't miss out on this over that concern. I can't speak to privacy invasion by Fimi, but I wanted to clear up this points at least. Note: If phrased correctly, Fimi seems to be willing to unlock these calibration features. 🖖 Live long and prosper with level horizons! 🖖
Yes at the time they wanted my password but I think since this video and one before it they are just giving in finally. Early on they wouldn't do it for everyone but now I think they are getting hit with so many that they finally got smart and gave in.

You should use a flat surface for imu cal.

How is the FIMI X8 2020 flying in residential area
I don’t but when I did it gets much shorter flight distance. Should keep it close in that situation anyhow but that’s the only effect it has.

It’s hard to say…it could be as simple as dust in the gimbal axis joints, a calibration or the dampers.

I think that's the main reason Fimi suggest the use of a box under the baseplate legs, rather than gimbal clearance, but if the gimbal rotated in "aileron", it could easily hit the floor. I don't know why they don't just make the baseplate leg covers thicker, so that it sits flat on all six legs. A belated Happy New Year to you, and I hope 2021 is a better one for you!
PS: I found a different version of the gimbal cover in the Fimi Store on Amazon - its almost identical but does not have the release tab sticking up on top, but a wide tab across the front for removal. It's held in place by protrusions that go into the screw holes that face downward on either side of camera. I may buy the other one to compare, but this fits decently and should work well.
As long as the gimbal is secure and straight thats all you need. Hope it works...

Just curios from what I've seen from videos the Fimi X8 horizon starts off level during flights but then gets wonky when yawing the drone...if the drone was mis-calibrated from the factory wouldn't you have a crooked horizon from the beginning of your flight? Thoughts? Did this permanently fix your horizon tilt issue?
It is fixed unless I’m in high wind and it randomly acts up in sport mode.

In your video you seemed to indicate that the callibration tools had to be unlocked by Fimi Support. Not sure if you saw my other post about the Gimbal calibration tool that was used in that video I referenced but it sounded like that Gimbal calibration tool didn't require any unlocking and it was different then the one you used. Thoughts when you get the chance.
@@jetmartin9501 some have to and some already came unlocked from what people report.
The original X8 just has the IMU calibration and the 3020 has both these. Then there’s the standard calibration all have and the manual adjustments.
@@QCGUY Ok..What do you mean by "standard" calibration. The tool you used to calibrate the Gimbal is different then the tool referenced in the video I referenced. Not sure which is the standard tool?

If I'm not getting lost in the Fimi 2020 menu windows... after Firmware update FC 1028D... the 'Drone Calibration' (under the Maintenance Mode menu) has lost, not only the 'Calibrate' button but the entire 'Drone Calibration' selection. The only IMU function I can find is under the 'Drone Body Sensor' selection and it only 'Checks IMU'. Mine always says good... so I don't know if a 'bad' check would let you do the 6 sided calibration moves or not..?? Is anyone else is seeing this after their Firmware FC 1028D update...???
That's odd to lose that from a firmware update. If they changed something there that would come from the app update.

Requested the unlocking about a month ago. Tried several times but did not solve the horizon tilt problem. I’m afraid it’s hopeless. Hopefully others have better luck. It’s a shame because the x8 2020 is a good budget drone. Hopefully the upcoming fimi mini will incorporate a refined gimbal.
Did you get it unlocked? I know you said tried several times but how you wrote it leaves a little to the imagination.
I was thinking the exact same thing about the mini when I first heard of it. That one is going to be interesting.
I contacted fimi to ask for the unlocking. Next day it was unlocked. I didn’t need to specify any problem, they just unlocked it.

Yes when I first did this I used the foam and it took a few good try’s till it hit me that my cover was the perfect tool. Especially after adding the thin foam sheet.

Thank you... I did some photogrammetry with fimi x8se2022v, then after processing the immage I get wrong altitude/elevation from the photos. For ex. the photo indicates surface elev. at +171 m which is should be +143 m. DJI Phantom just did more acurate at the same location. Is it caused by calibration problem of fimi or this is just fimi limitation ?

After I performed the 6 side drone calibration, and attempted to do the 6 sided gimbal calibration, the drone still had control of the gimbal/camera. Finally figured out that (for me) I had to start the 6 sided gimbal calibration before the drone would let the gimbal/camera become free and available to move, that is when I placed the cover on gimbal/camera. It was not until I started the calibration that the drone let me move and place the camera. Not sure why mine is different (drone 8/2020 mfg. date). Both calibrations completed successfully.
That’s why I don’t call this a fix for all because it’s different for some which in your case was a slight procedure difference. Glad you figured that out on your end . Good job 👍🏻

I think the reason for the box is because the quad does not sit perfectly level when resting on the front "built in" landing gear.
I was thinking that but wasn’t sure enough to say so. Might make a good difference in keeping the props out of the video when in it’s home point. 🤷♂️

I just confirmed a difference between the 2018 App; Fimi Navi (Fully Evolved!) and Navi 2020 (Less yet More) Apparently the early app WASN'T fully evolved, and now we have less, yet more. Wonderful. - One "LESS" part other than about 25 grams is software filters. We have General, Vivid B&W & F-Log - but Fully Evolved also had Art, Film & Nostalgia. Saw it in a video and was about to ask you to confirm, having both models, instead just downloaded it and yep. Not a huge deal, but feels like it's less but LESS somehow.

@@championcitabria5057 it’s a IMU calibration which is vital and most come with this feature as it’s needed to calibrate and get it well tuned.
They have always had it but chose to keep it locked for some reason.
I know it seems they should be perfect out of the box but things like compass calibrations, gimbal calibrations and IMU calibrations have been a thing for a long time. After going through China mail, being tossed like a football and around magnetic objects it’s necessary.

You’re best bet is post a video of the jello in a FIMI group or email FIMI.
I sent an e-mail to Fimi three weeks ago and they unlocked this calibration to me in less than 24 hours. But the real fact is that this does not solve the horizon tilt issue...
In fact I was in touch with Fimi about the horizon tilt issue, and after having sent them the typical information (blackbox, pictures, and so on), finally they told me to send the drone to China to solve this. They gave me another option that I never understood (in order to solve it by myself), I can share if you want, it includes a picture of the gimbal that I don't know how could I share here

Keep meaning to come back to this video and let people know: Fimi does NOT require your Account and PASSWORD as Chris needed to do with his OG X8SE. Currently all they ask for is the email account used and your: Fimi ID; a 14 character numeric ID that they use to index your account. I realize many folks would balk at handing over a password. Not sure if this is what Chris was referencing when he said "password" or if they changed it, but don't miss out on this over that concern. I can't speak to privacy invasion by Fimi, but I wanted to clear up this points at least. Note: If phrased correctly, Fimi seems to be willing to unlock these calibration features. 🖖 Live long and prosper with level horizons! 🖖
Yes at the time they wanted my password but I think since this video and one before it they are just giving in finally. Early on they wouldn't do it for everyone but now I think they are getting hit with so many that they finally got smart and gave in.
PS. I changed my password directly after and no harm was done.
