For people who didn’t see him, it’s so hard to capture who George “The Animal” Steele was, but my best comp would be to say he was the original Mankind. He had that same kind of charisma, popularity, and connection with the fans that Mick Foley had. If Hogan drew you in to wrestling back then, a guy like George is what kept you coming back
When I was 7 years old and Mom and dad was going through a divorce I always had Saturday night wrestling and could not wait to see George The animal Steele to eat a corner it was the best it made my week
Great Bio! There is a video of “George the Animal” on line that his wife released after he passed away. It was something he recorded to be released after he passed and it is a great touching video. RIP George, you gave joy to millions and touched the lives of an entire generation, Thank you!
I watched that video right after his wife released it. I would absolutely recommend watching it for fans and really anybody that likes classic wrestlers. He will always be remembered as the animal and a stand up man. RIP William Meyers aka George the animal steele
My favorite line in a George "the Animal" Steele match was by Jessie Ventura. George threw the stuffing from a turnbuckle in his opponents face and Jessie said, "He should be disqualified for using a BLATANT foreign object!"
A uncle of mine was driving a truck in the early 80's and had a delivery at Madison Heights, MI. high school gym, and George the Animal Steele took the delivery. Most people just would tell my uncle where to unload stuff and leave the lifting to him, but Not Jim "George the animal Steele" Myers, he jumped in the truck and damn near cleaned it out by himself, heavy ass boxes.. My uncle said he was a very cool guy. Cool story.
I absolutely loved George "The Animal" growing up in the 70's and 80's. Especially when I found out he was from Metro Detroit (where I am from) and was a teacher/coach locally. He was just endearing to me!
When it comes to shoot interviews, the best by far are those conducted with George! He was such an eloquent, old school gentleman and truly one of a kind.
Oh indeed. I saw one of his shoots a while back and couldn't believe how well he spoke. I know it's foolish to believe that sports people are uneducated but looking at George you'd expect a slight eloquence problem and I'm happy to say that wasn't the case.
Thank you for teaching us more about this great man. As a kid I thought he was legit crazy. Now we know, like Terry Funk, Randy Savage, Bruno, Dusty, & others, George was unselfish, dedicated to helping others become better, & a wonderful human being. R.I.P. Mr. Meyers.
I was fortunate enough to meet George at an independent wrestling show in the mid-to-late 90s. He was such a nice guy and genuinely cared about the fans.
MR Meyers introduced me to Roddy Piper when I was going to the weight room for summer workout. He also gave me tickets to see the WWF at Cobo hall. A fantastic teacher, great coach and friend of my family's for years.
I knew a guy who worked at the arena that George was wrestling at one night and when he went into the dressing room there was "The animal" sitting and reading a big hardcover book, wearing a turtleneck with reading glasses on the end of his nose. This guy only ever having heard "Hey"...."You" come out of his mouth was shocked when he looked up and said "Hello young man".
George was one of those guys you always rooted for in the ring. Somehow you knew he'd end up on the wrong side of matches, but he'd turn it positive in the end. You couldn't help but love the big galoot.
I was among the fans of the "Studio Wrestling" TV program in Pittsburgh. In a slightly different place I would have been the students of this man. Thank you for sharing this very compelling story. R.I.P George "The Animal" Steele. And thank you Wrestling Bios for your well researched work.
I grew up in Pittsburgh in the 80's and my Father had known Bruno S. growing up and had seen George before he was the Animal, thanks for the trip back to the ring.. plus George in Ed Wood, brilliant!
Thank you for featuring Scientific Wrestler extraordinaire George the Animal Steele who never cheated, never broke a rule, and always wrestled by the book. His commitment to fair play and sportsmanship is a permanent inspiration to all of us.
This guy use to scare me as a 5 year old kid back in 1998 when he would "eat" the turnbuckle pad and it looked like it "bled". Fast forward to Old School RAW November 15,2010 I marked out for him ripping the turnbuckle pad. As a guy who was diagnosed with Crohn's disease at the age of 11 (since 2004,do the math) I can relate to him. It's amazing how a guy who portrayed a savage gimmick was so well spoken. Rest in Peace,George "The Animal" Steele (April 16,1937-February 16,2017).
@@franklehman1593 What year did you graduate? My Dad (who also played football at Madison High School) was '74 and he said he was pretty old school and mean, borderline abusive - along with his brother who was an assistant coach if I remember correctly. Bret Hart also had not so great experiences with Jim. I don't doubt that he mellowed out towards the end of his life though. Do you have any good Jim Myers stories from back then?
I currently live in Madison Heights, MI, his hometown. I got to meet him when he was signing his autobiography at the local B&N. Awesome and impressive man, wasn’t until I read his book that I realized how intelligent he really was. One of photos used in this video shows him standing in front of Jim Myers Stadium, the MH high school football field which was named for him in honor of his life-long dedication to teaching and coaching. I know this bio is about wrestling, but I can believe you didn’t mention his endearing performance as Tor Johnson in the classic film, Ed Wood. Other than that omission, a really touching tribute.
I met him at an airport. I was there to pick up my mother in law who was coming back from Florida. I had my son in my arms and he was about 7 or 8 yrs old. Out came George, And of course when I recognized him, he went into character. My son was so excited.
Thank you for that George the animal steel was the first wild man of pro wrestling like I said before thanks this brings back so much memory's of me and my brother watching him in the 80s o how I miss that decade and those years
Growing up in the 70's/80's I remember "The Animal" , one of my favorite wrestlers during a time when wresting was really FUN and entertaining. Wresting today is boring since the demise of WCW and the early days of the NWO. I am no longer interested but thank you to those who take the time and post videos of this type to acknowledge a true talent and person. RIP George!
Great video! George “the animal” Steele an underrated legend. I remember little when he was a heel but do remember how excited I was when he tried to Ms. Elizabeth when he was fueding with the Macho Man! Great memories thank you!
Thank you so much for this episode! George has always been one of my all time favorite wrestlers and was such an amazing person both inside and outside the ring! An incredible story. RIP George. You are missed!
Wow I hadn't realized he passed away, atleast he got to live along life unlike so many others. R.I.P George "The Animal" Steele, never replaced or replicated!! A true original!!!
An undiagnosed dyslectic (we know the struggle a kid goes through, when none understands his problems and identify it as inability or dumbness) struggling to graduate. Then returning back to his high-school (after achieving Masters Degree) to become a High School Teacher, a Wrestling Coach and Football Coach. Wow! This alone is enough inspiring, an a potential script for a Movie!
I loved watching George "The Animal" Steele, growing up in the 80's! This man, much like Kamala and The Undertaker, was born to portray that gimmick. He was very, very convincing to kid me. I think that it is also safe to say that Steele was also the inspiration for Lyle Alzado's character in the 80's sitcom "Learning the Ropes". Awesome video, as usual, Sir. Thank you for all of the wonderful, awesome memories, Mr. Meyers. Continue to fly easy, Sir. 🙏
I was a tiny little kid, and George was ALWAYS my favorite. I almost never got to see him fight, and that made me so angry. I concluded that he couldn't be allowed to fight or else he would destroy every single opponent. The only one who came close to him was Andre. I miss them both so much.
As a young wrestling fan I always thought he was truly a wild animal of a man. He and his gimmick were perfect. Hats off to one of the greatest and to Wrestling Bios as well. I think I've watched all of your videos so far. Keep them coming. ... J
Loved this vid mate. I was genuinly gutted when I heard George had past away. I loved his gimmick. You did him proud with this video. Great work my friend, loved it.
I was in 6th grade, which was right around the time of WrestleMania 3. And I remember how much it blew my mind when I heard that George The Animal Steele was a freaking teacher.
Seeing George the animal steel brings back great memories. It sucks he had to leave us. He really was a gentle animal band will forever be remembered by his many fans. RIP William Meyers aka George the animal steel.

Thanks for George for keeping us entertained and wrestling fans for all of these years 👍..
You are missed 😢
Great character and personality, in and out of the ring and such a lovely God fearing man...Makes me cry ....
He also played the role of Tor Johnson in the critically acclaimed Ed Wood.
He did indeed. Outstanding movie!
Absolutely perfect casting as well.
I still can't believe he was a teacher😂
RIP George, thanks for the memories
The ending tribute music you used is such a beautiful song.
Do You know, by the way, what the name of the song is?

Thanks so much for this. I used to watch George when I was young with my late father . He worked constantly so it’s one of the few memories with him
He was just great. As a kid I cried when the Macho Man came after him. I felt so sorry for him!
Ole George was after Miss Elizabeth. Seemed so real back in the day..

Very nice bio on George Steele, well done.
This bio was different... This was so nice... Was warm, man this channel will grow and grow...
I've always loved watching The Animal. I saw a couple of shoot interviews with him and I recommend everyone watch them. Great respect for that guy.
I met George in the 80s . My mom ran the hotel where they all stayed when in Baltimore. He was really nice to me. Great guy and great wrestler.

2010 was long after “old school RAW”, my dude.
I live near Detroit and it was always the rumor before the internet that George was a teacher and coach near by.
I heard him say in an interview once when some of his students would ask if he was George Steele, he would respond "You think I'm that ugly?"
He was a teacher and my football. Coach
His real name was Jim myers
