  • Wrestling Bios Presents - The Story of Demolition in WWF
The WWE used to have one of the greatest Tag Team divisions in wrestling. During the wrestling boom period of the 80s, the WWF had teams such as The British Bulldogs, The Hart Foundation, and The Rockers just to name a few. When the big main event wrestling superstars were unable to perform in quality matches, there was a trust that the tag teams would always deliver.
A team that was introduced towards the end of the 80s was Demolition, featuring Ax and Smash. While the original team would go through a quick change when Barry Darsow replaced Randy Colley, it wouldn't be long before Demolition began dominiating the WWF Tag Team division. Booked as heels, Ax and Smash steamrolled through their opponents in the early days of Demolition.
As time went on, the team won the WWF Tag Team championships and went on to have one of the longest title reigns in WWE history. During their WWE careers, Demolition turned babyface and back to heels, were managed by Mr. Fuji twice, added a third member when Crush joined Demolition, and became very popular as members of the WWF roster during a time when the company was seeing huge growth.
In this mini documentary from Wrestling Bios, we take a look at Ax, Smash and Crush as we remember the Story of Demolition in the WWF. Topics include:
    - The debut of Domolition in the WWF
    - Randy Colley working as Smash but getting replaced by Barry Darsow
    - The early success of Demolition
    - Demolition defeating Strike Force for the WWF Tag Team titles
    - Demolition turning babyface when Mr. Fuji joined The Powers of Pain
    - Crush joins Demolition
    - The Legion of Doom joining the WWF and Demolition turning back to heels
    - Demolition's forgotten WWE legacy
    - Much More!

I got to meet Ax & Smash at a horror convention a few years ago, and they were really nice guys. My friend got to pose with replica WWF Tag Team Title belts with them. I think there was a bit more to explore with the team here discussing their growing popularity that lead to the face turn, their Rumble spot in 1989, much more about their Heenan Family feud, and how they differentiated themselves from the Road Warriors. I think they had a much better defined gimmick and characters than Hawk & Animal did. The Road Warriors just felt like two muscle men with a unique look, but had nothing beyond that to help craft their promos around. Ax & Smash cut much better, stronger promos that fit into their Demolition moniker. And honestly, Demolition was as over in 1989 as anyone else. Just check out the pop they get at Survivor Series alongside Jake Roberts and Hulk Hogan. I think the WWF got the Legion of Doom a little bit past their hottest period. Their best stuff was undoubtedly before then in the AWA & the NWA.
As a footnote, I think the face turn HELPED Demolition, but really cooled off the Powers of Pain. As faces, the Warlord and Barbarian seemed on track to win the tag straps as two powerhouses barreling through the competition, but once the double turn came, Demolition became HOTTER than ever. You knew they weren't dropping the belts anytime soon.

@@maximus3160 Fair enough to disagree. I just never found the Road Warriors as enjoyable. They typically just no-sold everyone and cut shouty-man tough guy promos. Demolition actually worked good back and forth matches with the Hart Foundation, British Bulldogs, the Rockers, and the Brain Busters. Bear in mind, I know LOD mainly from their WWF and later WCW runs, so, I've never seen them in their 80's prime.
