  • Wrestling Bios Presents - The Story of The Nasty Boys
Tag Team wrestling in the WWE, by most accounts, was much better back in the old WWF days. With teams like The Hart Foundation, The Rockers, Demolition and The Legion of Doom, the World Wrestling Federation once had one of the greatest tag team divisions in the world. That doesn't mean that ALL the tag teams were super talented. Enter Brian Knobbs and Jerry Sags, better known as The Nasty Boys.
The Nasty Boys got their break in wrestling while working for Verne Gagne's AWA and the CWA in Memphis. After a brief stint in WCW where they had great matches with The Steiner Brothers, the Nasty Boys made their way to the WWF, almost instantly being pushed to the top of the company and capturing the WWF Tag Team Championships at WrestleMania VII. What would follow would be dragged out drop to the lower end of the tag division, and it's no secret that Jerry Sags and Brian Knobbs weren't the most professional superstars in the WWE either.
In this mini documentary from Wrestling Bios, we take a look at The Careers of Brian Knobbs and Jerry Sags and also look into some of their more infamous confrontations as we look at The Story of The Nasty Boys. Topics covered include:
    - The Nasty Boys start in AWA and how they got their tag team name
    - The Nasty Boys vs The Steiners in WCW during 1990
    - The Nasty Boys WWF debut
    - Early Success when Knobbs and Sags won the Tag Titles at WrestleMania 7
    - Getting replaced by Hulk Hogan and Brutus Beefcake in a tag match at WrestleMania 8
    - The WCW return of the Nasty Boys and their success within the company
    - The Scott Hall story which ultimately led to the Nasty Boys being no more in WCW
    - The 2007 WWE return dark match featuring The Nasty Boys that got the team a ton of heat
    - The Nasty Boys in TNA
    - The Nasty Boys Ken Shamrock Story
    - Much More!

each pro wrestler thats remembered today had their own strengths, sometimes they were great in the ring, great on the mic, had a great look, or if they were really good, had all 3. Some guys like Raven seem to have a really great feel for culture, where things are going, what young people think is cool, and how to capitalize on it. I'd say thats what the nasty boys had, and I think they do deserve credit for it. They were doing an ECW, Attitude era gimmick almost a full decade before everyone else. They weren't great in the ring, but they were decent on the mic, worked a crowd really well in the ring, and had a definitive look that became the status quo. Should be noted though, they didn't create the new status quo, they just saw the change coming really early.
EDIT: The Shamrock fight: Should be noted that Shamrocks version of events is much more thorough then the nasty boys and they seem to 'forget' parts. Shamrock says he came in, saw knobbs, then went black. Sags had hid in the bathroom (directly beside the door when you come in) and he had a corded phone with a metal bell on the bottom (the ringer). He smashed the phone over the back of Ken's head. Ken had shouted at them to open the door first, announcing himself, so Sags had time to prepare, probably scared to death because Ken was quite possibly the actual most dangerous man on the planet at that time with his bare hands lol. Now Sags says he just came out of the bathroom and found Ken beating Knobbs while he slept. But Knobbs had no injuries so that doesn't make sense. ALSO they didn't actually throw him from the balcony lol, they were TRYING to throw him when someone discovered what was going on and stopped them because the thought Ken looked almost dead already from being stomped on for about 5 minutes with boots. Ken's version of events have been corroborated by a few people, first the guy who stopped the nasty boys from tossing Ken (wish I could remember his name, but he did a shoot interview and it came up, I believe hes an older fella who wears a cowboy hat) and second by Road dogg and Billy Gunn who were with Ken when he approached the Nasty Boys and have talked about it in shoots.. Love to see how Sags would do in a 2v1 fight against Ken and Frank.

Despite being hated by almost everybody in world of professional wrestling on-screen, they have always been known as tremendous professionals both inside and outside of the ring.
For those who possibly don't know, Jerry Sags is one of two maternal uncles of Cody Rhodes (the other being Fred Ottman), Rhodes' mother being Sags' and Ottman's first cousin.

The best wrestlers who have been around for years learn to reinvent themselves to breathe new life in their career. The Nasty Boys didn't do that and so they just would get nostalgia pops from time to time and that's it

Interesting thing about that Ken Shamrock story is both versions start with him kicking the door in, which no matter how you look at it, was a mistake on his part. At that point he's basically trespassing and assumed to be there to do harm.

The Nasty Boys worked just fine... two big guys big enough to pound their opponents. Street punks as a gimmick worked with the style. They were the tag team equivalent of the One Man Gang.

I remember when Saggs, or was it Nobbs, knocked his front teeth out in a match against the Midnight Rockers in the AWA. He finished the match, and it was an awesome match. Public Enemy was a complete rip off of the Nasty boys, in my opinion.

I first discovered the Nasty Boys when their gimmick seemed to be two really gross guys who rubbed jobbers' faces into their armpits. It was pretty damn cartoonish, and I couldn't take them seriously even as a kid. I felt they had the potential to be something more, though. At their best, they kind of reminded me of the proto-Dudleys.
