    Gorilla and Heenan were just the greatest duo on the mic in Pro Wrestling history, in my opinion. I never ever understood people who didn't like Gorilla's commentary style. I thought it was funny but in a very good way, and his banter with Heenan was just another level.

Gorilla Monsoon is my all-time favorite wrestling commentator and my favorite all-time wrestling commentary team is Monsoon and Jesse Ventura. It always bothered me that a Gorrila Monsoon action figure was never released by LJN, back in the day. Thank you for all of the memories, Gorrila!! Fly easy, Sir. 🙏

    Gorilla was a lot more than 6'2". He was at least 6'4"-6'5" during his commentary days (could have even been 6'6" in his younger days). He weighed 350 pounds during the 80's (post wrestling) and 300 pounds later in life, but was 400 during his wrestling career and has said that he once weighed as high as 450.

    • @TheMan-je5xq

    • @gimmethepinkelephant3685
      @gimmethepinkelephant3685 Год назад

      I think he actually was 6'6 or 6'7... Because I saw him box Andre the Giant and when he was standing in the ring with him he certainly did not look like he was any less than maybe 4 or 5 inches shorter than the Andre. They were going toe to toe and it just looked like two massive guys going at it. He definitely wasn't 6'2 as stated in this video. That's for damn sure.... Maybe once he got old and nearer to the time he had passed away he may have lost some height the way most of these wrestlers do. But yeah, he was definitely up there around 6'6 or 6'7.

    • @Jay-dn9lp

    I can well believe that people tuned in to listen to the Gorilla and Heenan banter. I did. You certainly did a great job with this video. It is a great biography of a great wrestler and man. You didn't mention the death of his son. I saw a bit of life leave him for a while there. He was so sad. Heenan did what he could to cheer Gorilla up, but I think he lost some of his love for the business at that time. My favorite quote from him as "He's (the wrestler that they were talking about) not paid by the hour". RIP I know that he is calling the matches in the sky and I can't wait to hear that commentary again- with Heenan, of course.

I became a fan of wrestling in the early nineties and Gorilla and Bobby Heenan were the best. I was always a fan of the heal wrestlers but you couldn't not like Monsoon. Gorilla Monsoon is like the John Madden of wrestling. There's literally a spot backstage named after him lol. He's certainly left his mark on the business and he left it a whole lot better than he found it. He was a wrestler, a shareholder when the company was still privately owned, a booker, a legit tough guy, and of course an announcer who we all remember. I thought he and Heenan were the voices of my childhood. "THIS PLACE IS GOING BANANAS!" If there's a life after this, I hope we get to listen to those two call matches with all of the icons right there in person! You don't well, Monsoon! Rip.

    Gorilla added a sense of realism during his wrestling career. The man still used the blade even though he owned part of the company

    Yeah the days when gorilla and the brain doing color commentary were so great. Those 2 guys had such an on air chemistry. And from what I can tell they were really good close friends IRL

    well done bio...met Gorilla in person when we had some wrestling shows in Hegins, Pa. and Shamokin, Pa. in the mid-1980s. Great guy. He was a great announcer, too. Still have his James Marella business card.

    Ìnteresting you mention the PWI "Worst Announcer" thing, the Apter mags always did prefer the NWA style to the WWF - I could listen to Monsoon and Heenan, or indeed Monsoon and Ventura all day over the very dry Solie type style, but they very much fitted the respective product.

      It's true about PWI. Here in Canada, I watched WWF, AWA, Lutte Internationale, amd Stampede. Because my grandfather owned a satellite dish at the time, we'd watch NWA together. PWI helped keep me up on Mid South, World Class, Florida and WWC. It's funny, years later when I finally saw some of the territories thanks to RUclips, the territories seemed incredibly small despite how the Apter mags described them.

    When I was a kid in the 80s and I was spinning through the channels. I remember so many times spotting Gorilla for a split second and then going back to that channel (USA probably) because wrestling was on! Back then you didn't know what was on tv until you either surfed or looked at a tv guide. My grandfather looked and sounded almost exactly like him so maybe that's why I liked him right away.... anyway he is who I think of first when someone says "legend". When I think of classic wrestling its his face I think of first.

    Gorilla and JR? WAY too short, but oh so sweet.
