Josh made a simple, but insightful, risk calculation: that the risk _was incalculable_ . Although he didn't say it explicitly, one can imply that Josh figured that the risk _could_ be too great. Good call.
You communicate information so beautifully in this comment.
Glad he did and very glad he is still around.
Yeah it's crazy! Glad Josh felt Titan's a death trap and followed his gut instinct.
Loves Expedition unknown.
"You couldn't even assess the risk." Ugh! Strong words!
Sad for the families, glad for Josh Gates.
So glad your intuition told you 'this isn't for me'. ❣
I really liked what Josh said and he seemed more knowledgeable about the mechanics of it, than I was expecting.
My man said "this is not for me" after first hand experience with the Harbor Freight submersible.
I would say he made the right call.
The line that was crossed was taking passengers (even despite signed waivers) before adequate testing.
He refused advice and he refused to be certified.
Exactly! Calling the passengers “mission specialists”, doesn’t make them experts. Oceangate can call them that, making them seem important, if they want. Truly they were just tourists, with the exception of Nargolet.
It was like sending passengers up in an experimental airplane with a test pilot.
Like he said, it could be pressure cycle fatigue. The comet airliner in the 1950s broke up in the sky. 7 broke up and they finally did cycle pressure tests and determined they all broke up from metal fatigue from the pressure cycles. All these submarines should be tested in the same way.
I thought this was a new one
Yes. That’s why Soviets used Titanium hulls. It gets stronger under pressure.
@@peterbarrett5496 It actually went down to Titanic wreck sites 3 times according to google. It had also went to other dives at different depths. That's why people talked about pressure and temperature cycles of how the Titan could withstand due to it is made of carbon fiber and titanium.
Who knows, ALL guessing at this time. Pressure Hull could have been fine but they had an onboard electrical fire inside and the hull was compromised in that way. Even the experts don't know just yet.
@@Resh.. Excellent post!
This man is an absolute legend.. My heart goes out to the entire families of the five Victims .. Very sad 😢💔🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊
Josh Gates is right. This terrible tragedy needs to be investigated to find out what happened and how to prevent such horrible things from happening in the future.
Just sent robot and don't put people in there. No matter how much you prepare and how safe it is, there is always some risk involved.
Unless they build a underwater station next to titanic, slightly safer maybe
No way. Send divers. Lol
There is nothing to investigate - that sub was never certified for life safety for 4000 meters depth at 6000PSI water pressure!!!
For life safety, the entire sub should have been tested to 3X or 5X of maximum pressure so that means certifying at 18,000PSI minimum!!! It wasn't! It wasn't even tested at 6000PSI pressure!!!!
Certification should not be optional.
Risk is acceptable though, it’s the fact that methods that have not been proven were utilized to service a tourist expedition that needs to be prevented. We cannot mitigate all risk, or we would never get out of bed. It’s very dangerous just I be on a boat in the north atlantic
Thank God he didn’t go God is with you Josh keep listening to him And God bless you always
As tragic as this is, this is why you need to not skip on safety being prioritised.
I know he must feel like the luckiest man in the world right now that he passed on that trip. Just like the people who missed making it onto the Titanic itself. Or getting on one of the hijacked planes on 9/11.
There are risks in everything, but when you sign on to do an excursion with a company you expect that that company has done everything they can to ensure passenger safety. You expect the company to get outside inspections, you expect them to get all the certifications and classifications they need, and to run numerous tests. You expect a company to be completely transparent about those tests and inspections. It doesn't sound like Oceangate did any of this. It was never registered as a commercial submersible which prevented it from having to meet certain regulations. Risk? Yes, but this goes beyond normal risk.
People let alone tourist should not have been allowed on an experimental and uncertified sub. Completely unethical
I’m glad Josh didn’t get on that Death Tube ran by a controller from $5 & Below!
CEO should've hired those "50-year old white guys" with good resumes instead of the "young, inspiring" and "diverse" recruits that had no clue what they were doing.
For real. Yeah I get younger kids younger minds and fresh ideas but they obviously lack experience and they don't get paid as much as the experts but there are experts for a reason. The first time I went under water cave diving my friends and I had 2 40 something year old experts with us even though I'm a really good diver I had never been deep cave diving and just like with the titan new experiences need experts to insure safety.
To be fair, 50 year old white guys with good resumes designed, built, and sailed the Titanic as well. Look what happened to it.
Imagine how the people who’ve been down there feel knowing that could’ve been them… Very lucky
Huge risks certainly but not in an uncertified craft in the Atlantic Ocean.
RIP. Unforgettable.
And certainly not with what amounts to paying customers on board.
This man is talking with common sense may be not today but we need to ask some serious question about the ocean gate sub. Putting people lives at risk is a topic for serious convesation. My condolences goes out to the families of these men
Thank God he didn’t go! And I heard another guy didn’t go b/c he had last minute business he had to attend to. Praise the Lord 🙌🏻🙌🏻 Love and prayers for the families and friends of these men 🙏🏼🙏🏼💙💙
I'm very sorry for this unfortunate incident and sadden for the family of these passengers. Josh, I'm glad you're still with us my friend, your series is my favorite weekly hour.
The only thing known for sure about this accident is that everyone will be suing everyone over it for the next century.
I love you Josh. My condolences to the Titan families.
❤ love Josh Gates
Me too!
Cuomo T.V. shows are just wonderful I never missed any of them who never know who will be on or what you will see people keep up the excellent work 💯👍
Good for you Josh.❤
Josh's necklace was speaking to him.
Isn't this what innovator's do, absolutely but they don't charge people $250,000 under a false pretense its safe and risk their lives.
wow did that guy dodge a bullet at least someone had a clue more than a few someone's but not enough
I'm so very glad he did, finally able to watch the show legally in Australia , really enjoy the show
My coworker and I were just so upset today when we found out that they found the debris she came over from her department and told me and I had been praying so hard and when I woke up this morning and found out they hadn't found them yet I was just devastated you have to have a heart and care about people on this planet even if they are strangers I certainly wouldn't want to be in that situation and I would probably have a breakdown if it were one of my family members
You should stop watching the news. People die every day.
If rich people have nothing better to do then to try and climb Mount Everest or take a sub to the bottom of the sea, then that is there problem.
Pray? Why? Theres no invisible man in the sky granting wishes.
@@TOMVUTHEPIMP You don't know what you don't know
@@TOMVUTHEPIMP to salve feelings of panic surely?
I don't think the Titanic had great personal meaning for the19 year old or his father, or Stockton Rush, for that matter, or Hamish Hardy. Would you want to fly on an experimental airplane that hadn't been certified by any agency to get to a tourist destination?
Rush's wife was a great granddaughter of Titanic victims. There is literally a direct connection. The Pakistani was a Titanic nut. There is connection and likely part of reason for the risk taken. Hindsight is 20/20. No excuse for stockton rush's arrogance and greed though.
Josh is the man!! His shows are great!
That material should have been tested more before doing manned missions.
Josh Gates is my all-time favorite host. A real Indiana Jones! Josh has some brass ones and I have seen him do dome things that are just bonkers. For him to back out says a lot about those internal feelings that just tell you NO, DONT GO. Very sad indeed. Especially the kid that didn't want to go in the first place.
Gates is brilliant and a wonderful speaker. He voiced concerns before anyone else about the deeper questions that only later became obvious about Rush. Gates should ruyn for President someday!!!
I don't blame Josh Gates 1 little bit for not going again into that doomed submersible. His gut instinct kicked into high gear & screamed at him to not go......good thing he listened to it.
Josh Gates is a adventurous daredevil who Literally do anything dangerous for a buzz but thankfully he followed his gut instinct! Loves his show Expedition unknown.
Josh Gate 🙏🏻God bless
If josh was not committed to going to titanic !! That says something !! He has done a lot of crazy stuff in his career
Yeah he's a adventurous daredevil who will do any dangerous stuff for his tv show......the scary part is he actually did a test dive once but obviously during the dive he noticed something was wrong with Titan and decided not to go ahead filming titanic for his tv show so yeah thankfully this time he followed his gut instinct. I would never go in any submersible if I was offered $1bm! lol
Smart call Josh. Gotta be there for your family as well. Air pressure and temperature are different from water pressure and temperature.
Amazing how many assumptions are being made with absolutely no clue or evidence. Sad. Josh Gates seems cool tho'
He said it about as good as you can, respect
I believe not only the hull is a cylinder like a soda can. It’s harder to crunch a can on it’s ends without a crease. But easy on it’s wide part with no problem. An egg is almost a sphere in shape had its very hard to break just by squeezing. The cylinder can design was its fatal flaw.
Not one thing unreasonable or out of line with his perspective too many unknowns that could have should have been remedied first. This disaster had a better chance of never happening then.
Some risk is definitely required but a $50 Xbox console to drive the sub is something else. All these rich people taking rides down to the Titanic so where is there money going? It's definitely not towards safety
Hopefully this catastrophe will put an end to this billionaire circus ride trip to the Titanic.
Let the ship rest in peace.
Go find something else to spend your money on.
Passengers who are not experts in building subs would expect the company to have the proper certifications, and design. This wasn't about the unknown like getting tangled stuck on the bottom. That is what people thought when they signed that waiver. People don't expect the pressure hull to fail.
I don't think you should be taking tourists in an experimental sub for profit. its one thing to put yourself in danger but it is another to put an put someone who does not really have enough knowledge to consent to the danger. I doubt the passengers were engineers with the understanding of lack of research on carbon fiber and external pressure.
Excellent interview. Really good research. Thank you, Chris Cuomo.
Need to investigate the material more I agree with that
A shocking deal of foolishness seems to have been involved. Grief over the deceased should not stop us from pointing to the numerous ways in which safety was disregarded. The only person where one can try to find some degree of rationality, for him to risk his life so unreasonably, is the French guide. He was a retired submariner, an old man with a fixation over Titanic who happened to be very well paid to dive. So well paid, I guess, he was thinking about his children and grandchildren at least as much as about Titanic. He lost his life as a richer old man than many other French navy officers, probably (though others aren't bad either, at finding extra revenue sources).
I seen where someone said that this sub was only rated to go down to 1,300ft not 3,000ft.
Actually they were to have gone down to the Titanic, which is about 13,000+ feet. (Over 2 miles down).
the viewport on the sub was only built to a certified pressure of 1,300 meters, even though the Titan intended to go down to 4,000 meters in depth
@@mmsharonmmsafety factors with equipment could be like x5, which is why he prob risked it
I'm a fan of Josh Gates show. I'm watching his show now.
R I P to all. wow is it why these people are called explorers. I couldn't imagine being squashed into this submersible even on land let alone way under the sea bed. condolences from across the pond
My condolences to the family and friends of the 44 Argentine Sailors killed on sub ARA San Juan. 🇦🇷 In 2017 you barely made the news. 😑
What he said reminded me of why there are people who didn't want the vax
Thank you
What season was it
No, carbon fiber under compression is not strong. it's just epoxy.
Wrong
Can't stand Cuomo, but I love me some josh gates!! He put it perfectly
This dude is now living Final Destination 6 😬
Everything we have seen with gate attached has always been a negative!
"Isn't that how it's done? You want to try something never done before so you have to take that risk?"
*Josh Gates going from nodding in agreement about the news anchor having watched his show before shaking his head in disagreement with his idea about taking unnecessary risks*
His response in the middle of shaking his head saying no: "absolutely 😃" 🤣🤣🤣
There's data now.... testing a new idea with passengers (even if you call them "mission specialists") is just careless!!!.... Did they even know they were part of testing the new craft??? 😳 I strongly doubt any of them actually knew the risk they were taking..... Stockton may have been carelessly arrogant, but, he wouldn't have deliberately risked his own life.... he actually believed he knew better... 😔💔💔💔💔💔
The Titanic was the first of its kind too 🤔
In this day in time a sub like this could be operated remotely for its first dives and then do checks on the integrity of the carbon fiber. They could have done 3-4-5 maybe ten dives to the titanic via remote control before putting a single person inside of it.
Its either over use it definitely wasn't engineered correctly...or it was a plot to kill them off. Prior to the descend perhaps the craft was tampered with. Was it the son or a mistress disgruntled employee...must investigate all angles. The son seems suspect.
This is so sad
Remote control that Sub on many dives to work out the flaws before a Human rides that gauntlet of extreme pressures and temperatures
That submersible could've been sent down empty dozens of times with instrumentation to "baseline" it's performance. The company chose not to do that. We all know that is because test runs cost money and don't generate profit. So the company chose profit over science, and the passengers(with the exception of the underage passenger) accepted that.
Smart man.
LovevJosh Wilson!!!!!!
Here's a question because I watched expedition unknown I just wish to ask Josh gates if they could investigate the native monsters known as skinwalkers
i think they did it
@@cristona.d5265 when?
They were going to see a ship that may not have been safe sailed..... with a sub that may not have been safe to sailed.
I love that guy such so happy he didn't go
I love Josh Gates
I also passed on the trip as well. Simply because I didn't have enough money
You can begrudge these fools because they caused Coastguard and navy rescue crews to risk their lives. Next narcissist CEO determined to murder people should sign an agreement that no one will going looking for them when their recklessness kills.
He didn’t deliberately murder anyone. He wouldn’t have been in the sub himself if he thought they wouldn’t make it back alive.
@@Kathy-bc5yq I beg to differ malignant narcissists are always where they can be the center of attention...
@@conradsieber7883 Who says he was a malignant narcissist? As a mental health professional, I certainly would not diagnose someone that I have not done an assessment on personally, nor do I know any other professional who would. Also, I would say in my opinion he may have had some narcissistic traits, but I doubt he was a true narcissist.
Not a very difficult decision to make, especially when the CEO was openly bragging about buying the ceiling lights from Camper World 😮 who knows what other things he cheaped out on!
Titanic Is NOT a tourist venue!
I don’t care what anyone says, this dude was a Ponzi scheme on steroids, he made all the passengers feel safe and honestly sent them to there grave with no concern other than them signing a waiver I’m sure that will make him unaccountable in any court. This is sad and they had confidence in this guy and he took advantage of them.
He is unaccountable because he died in the sub
Why not make it from the same material our spacecraft are?
He said.. No I have a crystal ball.. I think we know the outcome of that expedition
It's kinda like how many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie pop!
Why is Chris on this channel? Didn’t he get fired from CNN???
Stockton was the SBF was the sea…
What does news nation have against ocean gate... its endless attacking at this point.
Anyone going down in a sub where the ceo says getting out of bed is dangerous... just gotta hope that kid wanted to do it and not the dad... and thankfully it was quick.
smart man.
Love josh gates just happy he didn’t go down with those fuckers he was too smart for that
This submersible seems to be the ultimate design that will deny the carbon fibre body to be put in its position of ultimate strength.. tension. And at the same time to exploit its ultimate weakness.. compression, of which it has little strength. Likely shattered
Spot on
They keep saying that going down there shows a lot of courage…I would go down there cuz I don’t give a fuck
They should have sent it with a robot first
I don’t care for como…
Why is Frado here?
Josh Gates, we know the name. More people know Fredo...
I beg to differ, Josh. A 19-year-old is not to be celebrated. It’s a tragedy! And it nullifies any sense of courage or respect for the older adults. At the end, Josh finally has a perspective regarding the young boy. But only at the end of the interview.
Not a mystery anymore.
Very smart
What a ggreat show
Rush should get a Darwin award.
hasnt this sub already have done this so they knew it worked?
Cumo is on News Nation.... yikes... I'd rethink that idea
