It's uncanny how this guy is totally confident in this vessel's abilities despite all the red flags... kind of reminds me of that "unsinkable" vessel that didn't need lifeboats.

When I clicked on this video, I didn't know it was about OceanGate. So I was shocked when I saw Stockton Rush suddenly appear. Knowing what we know now, this video had some foreshadowing.

Any single professional in the deepwater oil and gas industry would have said them that it was the worst design ever for a manned sub...that's why we have ROV's and we normally operate at depths of over 4000meters

This is how I enjoy these things. Safely at home or travelling in HD and hopefully we enjoy it all in 8k next time. I love documentaries. I'm adventurous too but life is just too precious to go down there without many many hours of thought and preparation. Seeing all the facts laid before me I would never ever put myself nor my worst enemy in there. RIP to those who perished.

Same goes with many of the Earths wonders. Thank goodness for the technology today which has helped curiosity. I would imagine now we will likely not see very many voyages anymore to the Titanic, as the deceased passengers/crew should remain at peace.

The gal cried and stated that her trip down to the Titanic was cancelled 3x times. This was actually a BLESSING in disguise.
The ocean is terribly unforgiving of errors and misjudgement. My heart really goes out for that young man who was apparently terrified of making this trip, but did it to please his father.

Titanic actually didn’t cut corners she exceeded the regulations of her day. The regulations weren’t what they needed.

I was thinking about the many unfortunate ironies of the situation earlier today.
@@JessforR they carried more than required, it didn’t occur to White Star Line that a ship could founder without aide nearby to take on passengers. Cut corners would be they spent money on flimsy life boats or cheap iron. They spared no expense and the fact that Titanic stayed afloat an hour longer than predicted speaks volumes of how well put together she was.

The fact someone could see the sub in person, read the waiver and what it specifically says and still sign on the line and go down is crazy
They all probably knew that it was really risky but as with most people today, they probably just only read a small portion of the waiver and signed it.
I mean even if it would be totally safe and certified you probably would have to sign such a waiver.

I remember watching this. When he said he got some of the parts from camping world I was amazed at the ridiculousness of this operation and I couldn’t understand why anyone would risk their life going on this thing.
I wonder if the submarine's everything failure affected Camping World's business due to that. Reasonably, it shouldn't, but humans are a superstitious folk.

@@diverman1023 yes, but using parts from a camping store shows what kind of operation this whole thing was, my original point still stands, I wouldn't have gotten on this thing in the first place but when people saw it was rigged together like this I don't understand why this wasn't an huge red flag to people
@@jpete3027666 Using parts from a regular store for internal comfort isn't a red flag, it's quite common for submersibles in fact. The Alvin from WHOI uses yoga mats to make laying down more comfortable for example.
What you can say was a red flag about OceanGate was their black sheep approach to R&D...firing your researchers when they raise concerns isn't the way this industry operates

It's really a great lesson for following proper safety protocols.
I was under the impression this submersible was more secured with more advanced technology similar to the submersibles previously used in Titanic expeditions.
Watching this after hearing about this sub being lost at sea with 5 people shows this was an accident waiting to happen.
the hull, the part you really care about was apparently quite sophisticated in it's design, if you do reading beyond this youtube video. People commenting don't have a clue what they are talking about. That being said, looks like a nightmarish deathtrap to me.

@@whitneyv.8211 Sophisticated does not equal safe. You can build a sophisticated machine that mixes bleach and ammonia but that does not make it safe.
Anyone able and willing to both pay and sign. I've signed similar things for surgeries, many have. I guess we rationalize risk vs reward and everyone has a different value for signing or not. For them, I hope they got the quick one. ✌🏻 and ♥️ Bold explorers!
@@draxzorNot true. The ones James Cameron used were Russian submersibles. I believe they were government built but I’m not 100% sure. The Russian submersibles were maneuvered by custom-built controls, not a re-purposed game controller. They also had a deployable robot tethered to the submersible which could go inside the titanic. Definitely more professional than this operation.

You couldn’t pay me to get in anything bolted shut from the outside. I had a pool growing up and when I was 7 years old I decided to take the pools toy box and take it under water like a submarine. I got in it and went underwater. Just as I realized I was trapped my friend pulled the lid off. He just so happened to knock on my door and check the back because no one answered the door. He saw the toy box and pulled me out. This stuck with me over the years and I have no interest going underwater in another box any time soon.
It’s kinda sad because we might never know what truly happened or what wrong because there wasn’t a black box or any form to know what the crew said and what happened.
I feel the same way but some people out there welcome the risk and don’t care the cost to take part in and experience a once in 10 lifetimes kind of experience.
Thanks to the reporter and his team, we at least can get a glimpse on how shoddy the craft was.

Airplanes are made of aluminum and high altitude equals lower air pressure… which means it’s not gonna crumble like a tin can if there’s a small defect in the fuselage… if there’s even a microscopic hole in the hull of the sub, it’s gonna collapse faster than a fat man running during a marathon

Can you imagine how lucky this reporter feels to be alive today? He even expressed his concerns over the construction of the sub in the video, and Rush just brushes them off. Its scary to see his hubris that ultimately got himself and 4 others killed.

So in this interview 4:00 he said that everything can go off, but as long as pressure vessel is good, there is nothing to worry about... And then it was the pressure vessel that failed.

The absolute top tier red flag here is when he says "everything else can fail". At 6000psi and 13000ft under, NOTHING is allowed to fail. Any single failure can mean death. That statement alone makes it clear he is _completely_ unqualified to lead this kind of effort.
I hate be the guy but things will fail. That's why there's such things as redundancies and safety factors. Obviously he ignored a lot of these but an escape hatch operable from the inside at least would give them a chance to surface. How possible it is at these depths is another question but better a chance to live than to wait and die.

There are certain elements that cannot fail under any circumstances such as the hull, the windows, the seal, etc. after that though, some things can and should be expected to malfunction. That’s why there are redundancies built in. This thing not only had no contingencies built into it, it wasn’t even certified.
I'm just glad the lady who saved up for 30 years was able to finally get her experience and didn't end up on the one that was lost. I thought being buried alive would be the worst way to go, but this is a completely new level of nightmare fuel. I hope they are rescued, but I don't even know how such a thing would be possible tbh.

@@dreamkitty the best we can hope for at this point is that the pressure vessel failed catastrophically and the whole thing imploded, so they went out rather quickly. That's the most likely scenario in my opinon. Especially since they lost contact while descending and already at quite a depth.
The only other alternatives are that they are either bobbing around somewhere on the surface, or deep underwater, just waiting until they run out of air. Even if by some miracle they actually made it back up to the surface, they cannot get out of the sub because it can only be opened from the outside.
So unless they are found, they would still suffocate inside of that sub while bobbing on the surface.

True you’d think it would need to be a torque wrench. I used to work on munitions in the Air Force and every bolt would need to be torqued, then slightly loosened, and torqued again. Torque wrenches required periodic calibration. While working on the munitions there would be a guy that was required to read each step of the process out loud as we did it…didn’t matter if everyone there had the whole process memorized or not. The whole thing at least felt more professional than these guys just zipping the door on with an impact

We don't know if it was torqued to spec or not. We just saw a few seconds of a guy running one bolt. I'm guessing there probably is no spec at all.

or the woman that has been in the sub 3 times without seeing the titanic, she tested her luck. If she didnt get to see it while this documentary was filmed, she for sure would have had a seat in this tragic expedition again.

@@hvip4 It's an experimental submersible that went to depths an extremely limited number of vehicles can reach. No matter how "advanced" the hull, etc. might be, there are countless things that could go wrong because the ocean itself is unpredictable/ CLEARLY SOMETHING DID go wrong because the thing is literally missing right now!!
It was good summersible but not built for multiple dives,
its amazing how much pressure this summersible withstand and came back in one piece after so many visits

@@silenz_178in fairness he does say the pressure vessel itself is built in collaboration with Boeing, NASA and UWA. He was just talking about the lights, thrusters other stuff like that which can always fail no matter if you’re in a plane or rocket ship. I honestly think either a current took the thing or it’s stuck somewhere down there by the wreck.

2:40 Well, that waiver says it all. That submersible was completely improvised. There were no redundancies or safety features, and it was terribly claustrophobic. Honestly, the thought of going that deep is in itself terrifying, but doing so in a plastic tube steered with a game control is simply crazy. As a bare minimum, a proper submersible ought to have a conventional ballast system, using water as ballast and compressed air to release it and float back to the surface. Two lines, one for communication and a cable to allow the mothership to recover the vehicle in case of malfunction ought to be mandatory. The Titanic is remembered not only because it was the largest and most luxurious ship in the world, but also because safety was not a priority. Corners were cut when it came to lifeboats and iceberg warnings, leading to tragedy. People should have learned the lessons from the Titanic, instead of turning it into a tourist attraction and making the same mistake all over again. If I were to visit the Titanic, safety would be the first thing on my mind. There's no way I would have boarded this craft which was almost put together with duct tape.
Compressed air ballast cant be used that deep. The water pressure exceeds the pressure inside a compressed gas cylinder. You have to drop weights in an emergency. At the titanic the pressure is 5800 psi about. Most compressed gas is basically a liquid at that point.
Most research subs are pretty safe they dont use teathers because they can get caught on things. Also surface waves can push the ship around and yard on the cable which can be an issue. What is irregular about this sub is the composite tube. Also compared to others it is fairly big inside.
The composite make me nervous. I cant think of any other subs that go that deep that use composite pressure vessels.

Other than no way of knowing the submersible's position when communication is lost, the parts from Camping World, the video game controller, 96-ish hours of oxygen, no emergency distress beacon, and no certification.....it's completely safe.
Not to mention they are bolted in there from the outside

I'll bet David is looking back on this experience and he's thankful he survived this event. I'm surprised that sub managed to have 1 successful expedition with all of the red flags surrounding it. These people entrusted their lives in a metal tube that you can't get out of, have hardly any room to move around in, and it was piloted by a videogame controller. What a sad, senseless, and unnecessary way to die. I hope it was quick for all of them.

The were crushed. At that depth, we're talking 400 pounds of pressure exerted on the body. They probably just heard a sound of the carbon fiber breaking and that was it.

That means that the body at that depth is experiencing the implosive force of over 16,800,000 pounds of force compressing their body into a fine mist.

Definitely a miracle and likely gave a false sense of security, while the vessel got weaker and weaker with each dive. From what I’ve read, carbon fiber, in this environment, degrades each dive. Where steel or titanium would be less likely to degrade so quickly.

I went on a submarine tour in Hawaii.... by the time we got to the bottom....I was SO NERVOUS!!!! I started regretting it and my heart started beating so hard it was hurting my ears...I just wanted to cry....I was so afraid but didn't want to let it overwhelm me. I just wanted to get back to the top!!

@@fluffylittlebear actually no, they didn't. Our bodies are mostly made out of water and liquids, that cannot be compressed, only gas can be compressed. Gas is found in our noses, our lungs and our colon. So those areas would get compressed, others wouldn't.
With an average descent rate of 73 feet per minute (and assuming loss of communication is when the implosion occurred) the Titan was 7,720 feet deep and 4,780 feet from the ocean floor.
The pressure at that depth is 3,343psi.
It happened in a fraction of a second. There was no suffering.

The reporter *did* get into the sub for a dive - sure, it was just one to the nearby continental shelf (rather than the titanic), and that dive had to be aborted just as it was starting - but still, he had the cajoles to actually get sealed into that deathtrap for a dive.

The CEO said the quiet part out-loud. They invested all their money into the hull of the ship because that is the most mission critical part. They got involved with NASA and Boeing which generates good PR. Then they skimped on the rest: comms, infrastructure, controls and gave it a hyper-minimalist look without any hope of being debug-able, much less fixable 20,000 leagues under the sea.

I've never heard someone say "it shouldn't take a lot of skill" and that "the thrusters can break" when describing a submarine that goes deeper than anything anyone has ever built before, so I'm not surprised things went badly

there are subs that can go deeper than this one. The biggest problem of this sub was lack of better communication system and extra security measures to re-surface incase the main system fails.
