@@jayme3181 That's extremely ignorant of everything James Cameron has done over the last 40 years. If he's not an expert in this stuff, nobody is. You may not like him as a person (I'm not sure if I do), but the guy has been hugely instrumental to this field and has had to solve rather complex problems regarding submersibles, both in and out of his filmmaking. He's been incredibly innovative in shooting movies underwater, to the point where he had to design systems that had never been tested before WHILE keeping his cast and crew safe. And the movie stuff is nothing compared to his real life accomplishments that squash your comment flat instantly for anybody that actually knows about the guy.
I was wondering why James Cameron was not speaking out about it prior to the news coming out. He knew immediately and respected that the timing was not appropriate. Much respect to him and Bob Ballard.
Cameron made perfect sense when explaining his reason for not immediately coming out with what he thought. Can you imagine that ? Someone who doesn't instantly flap his mouth, even though he probably is correct in what he thinks. Very rare nowadays.
hearing him talk about how he knew instantly it was gone and having to sit there and watch a hopeless rescue mission while keeping his mouth shut to the public must have been excruciating.
Anyone that spoke out was sued by Oceangate, even the engineer that got fired and where sued for defamation. Industry organization and leaders also spoke out about this but were also silenced by some others, they also faked their design outcomes just to past simple compliances.
Cameron nailed it! I'm a retired engineer and for decades I had to defend good engineering and "standards of care" against managers, promoters, and "creative engineers" who pushed "out of the box" solutions.
Thinking "outside the box" when the box is being subjected to some of the most extreme conditions that exist on this planet is some serious hubris. Submersibles are built the way they are - and with the materials they are - for a REASON.
What a respectful interviewer. When accidentally interrupting the expert, he had enough grace to stop talking immediately and gave the floor to him, and then apologized. Nothing but respect. Great interview, good information. Terrible situation:(
Yes it makes such a change. This was a top tier interview. Two great guest / specialists and and an interviewer who knew when to shut up, realising the golden content was with the guests not the questions.
Awesome, some reporters spend 3/4 of the interview asking the danged questions! Which leaves very little time for answers, which is what we're all here for! He was brief, to the point and let them speak.

was here to write just that, such a good reporter also asked really good articulated questions. was just a pleasure to listen if u can say that considering the outcome of the whole scenario. I think Cameron has a much more strict oppinion on the whole situation, i believe he didnt wanna say more bad things about stockton and the whole expedition just out of respect for the families that lost members, but its obvious even to a civilian like me that this was just crazy and stocktons ego is what drove them to their tomb.
As an engineer, thank you for speaking up for tested and improved design, and design being certified and regulated. It’s sooo important and this didn’t have to happen
James Cameron hit the right tone perfectly. Compassion for the victims and sober, no nonsense criticism for the irresponsibility and hubris of Stockton Rush, then back to the compassion, especially for their families.
Most of the discourse I have seen has been "They were rich so I am glad they died". The world is a truly disgusting place. Compassion is the only thing that should be happening right now, criticism can come later.

For those who only know James Cameron as a movie director. James Cameron is a real submarine engineer, designed his own submersible and he took double digit deep into the ocean. 3 dives into depths 3 times the titanic graveyard. So Oceangate is not making any new grounds by going to the site. Plenty of others have gone way deeper than this. So many ignorant people in the comments.
It feels really refreshing to have a news segment where someone actually speaks like a human being and not relying on emotions to cause fear mongering. Lots of respect towards Cameron here, he explains a lot of complicated subjects in such a digestive fashion, that's a great skill to have.
James Cameron articulated what I've been trying to say. The only thing left is to offer condolences to the families who must now live with their grief.

I have completed many rescues as well as huge construction projects. My biggest being the HPX3 Construction project we built 3 coal terminal's from sea to shore. Anyway here is where I disagree with you. I cut my teeth in Sydney Harbour..I worked for Polaris Marine mostly in salvage and rescue here is where I disagree with you. I Strongly mostly commercial diver's I don't know you're background but those 6 friends were very rich and wanted to find treasure offshore on various wrecks. I consider wrecks a Graveyard and they need to be respected. I have left the industry because a rigger called Max was decapitated during a salvage on Sydney Harbour. I saw his brains splatter all over my deck and u had to call his family, a wife and 4 kids. I'm happy for you to dress up in a suit and tell stories but I have first hand experience of billionaire's begging to risk the lives of themselves and my crew to find treasure, and the most disrespectful thing I witness is whenever we found clothing, shoes etc, these indian billionaire's would just push to find"treasure" I was discusted by this behaviour. Yes, ignoring the laws of physics and facts of engineering isn't "innovation", it is stupidity. I don't know why he wanted to re-invent the wheel by disregarding the proven science before him.
James Cameron is not only a visionary moviemaker he’s an articulate mechanical genius who has traveled in his own submersible to the deepest point on earth, the Challenger Deep.
I think his extremely talented and hard working team deserves more credit than you're giving them. He even said on his way up "*We* did it. I'm just the unlucky SOB that had to be crammed in this thing"

@ko7577I totally agree. While the movie was indeed a box office, and I have to say one of the best movies ever made, production-wise, it’s the catalyst that further sparked the curiosity of so many people to dive deep into that gravesite. There are tons of videos, photos available online & even a museum dedicated to the Titanic. I don’t know what else people want to see or discover from it. Let the dead rest in peace & leave that cursed site alone. 111 years later & it’s still taking lives..
@ko7577 The difference being that Cameron recognized the dangers of submersibles. The wreck is beautiful in a macabre way in the same sense as murder is fascinating to people. The movie was fine; Its purpose was to make money from the average crowd, not satisfy some random guy 25 years after its release still hung up on a tragedy from 112 years ago. I don't see how his influence is the cause for a poorly design sub imploding. Why anyone would board a uncertified death trap is beyond me. That sub looked less advanced than subs from the 1980's(I.E. The sub that first explored Titanic). Was the lack of certification, wireless controller, discount lcd screens, no seats, sharpie labels, and complete lack of any back up systems not enough to scare people away. I'm more confuse as to how you become a billionaire without common sense.
@ko7577I think his story brought more awareness to the titanic and shed light on the history and made something beautiful out of a tragedy in the most respectful way possible. He took the time and risk to really learn about it.
@ko7577i dont disagree - one of the most massive instances of destruction to the remaining intact hull was by one of Camerons expeditions. Though arguably, the most desecration and damage has been done by the company (I dont remember the name) who has stolen thousands of personal belongings from the site. Famously they found a watch belonging a 90+yr old survivor, and "gifted" her her own watch back! Then took it back from her family once she died! I personally see that as more of a insult to the dead than Camerons filming. We have perhaps more sympathy (even if fictional dialogue) with the Titanic due to this. Camerons films are really only examples of how in love people are with the Titanic and have been since she sunk. Even before the films came out everyone was fascinated, Hence Ballard working tirelessly to find her
I knew he’d gone down to see the Titanic once, but not until this interview did I know James had been down there THAT many times and so educated on deep dives. He knows what he’s talking about. Great interviews with two *experts.*
Not just apioneer, he can be called an expert on deep submersibles. Together with a marine engineer, he designed and built his own sub to dive down to the deepest part of the mariana trench, over three times deeper than Titan ever went. And he did of course, he has the honour of being one of the deepest humans in history (LOL) He would scrutinize over everything multiple times, right down to whether they should put a titanium washer in or a steel one.

Ignorance will eventually kill people. And it killed people in this case. These innocent passengers were led to their death by trusting the subs owner. I blame the owner
They and Cameron knew all along they were dead and why yet didn't have the honesty and integrity to tell us the truth, and I did think they all sounded extra mealy mouthed. James Cameron has been saying he knew on Sunday that the sub was crushed. There was a recording of it imploding at the same time they lost contact and they new it all along.
This interviewer did such a great job on this one. Started off with empathy for the families, highlighted why these 2 men know more on this topic than most others & then delved into why it could have been avoided. James & Bob are truly exemplary professionals in their fields. I wish this was longer.
Journalism should always be empathetic and compassionate to humanity since they generally tell human stories. but sadly nowadays it's all about what political party you align yourself with that seems to matter the most to these news journalists.
If anything this tragedy has done, it’s made me learn more about these two men. I have nothing but respect for them and all they’ve accomplished. Literal legends.
Dr. Ballard is one of my heros. Most people know him as the one who found Titanic, but he's so much more. He's contributed so much to submersible engineering, found other wrecks, and discovered life at the bottom of the ocean in the deep sea vents. Before him, no one thought life existed down there.
Met him years ago when I was training to be an ROV pilot/tech - and you just knew you were in the company of a guy who was the very best in his field. Sub was made from the wrong materials, and this type of extreme tourism isn't going to be low risk for a very long time
James Cameron knows how to go down there and the fact that people like him warned them and they still went through with it shows how much the owner disregarded human life over "the sense of adventure". Such a shame for the loss of the passengers.
James Cameron himself did not warn Stockton Rush or OceanGate. They were warned by others. Rush should have asked Cameron and Ballard for their advice.
Exactly. I actually feel like Stockton should go down as a criminally negligent and delusional egomaniac rather than an adventurous innovator. I’m disgusted by his actions.
Yep. James either went on his own or had someone else go and that’s the difference. His sub is only meant for one occupant, not fckin 5 people. Especially in that size.

Thank you both for your insights into this tragedy. "Tragedy" is the right word for this. As with the Titanic, the primary human failing of pride got in the way of sound knowledge and a deep concern for safety.
I flew Robert on my flight a while back. He took about 25 minutes to talk with me and answer questions. His eyes lit up and the enthusiasm he spoke with, you could tell he is so passionate to share his love the sea and exploration. What a genuine person.
Wow lucky you. I studied his work on hydrothermal vents for an aquatic biodiversity module during my degree over twenty years ago. The paper I wrote is the only one I kept of all my degree work including my final dissertation. I remember being blown away by the fact that these vents could sustain life in those conditions. If I had all the money in the world I would have paid to study at Woods Hole or Scripps after my degree. Now I would pay to have 25 mins of Dr Ballard’s time!
What I respect about James Cameron is the time he took to become an expert in this area due to the time and dedication he committed to in studying, researching and actually building his own submarine and taking the proper precautions when diving to that extent of the ocean.
Exactly. The fact that he says the warning system inside when hole happens is absolutely pointless. Yeah, you are warned , so what? Just a heads up that you will die. James Cameron doesnt cut corners.

Both Cameron and Dr Ballard are spot on in their assessment of the incident and their criticism. The company was warned the vehicle was not safe for that depth and chose to ignore it. The only solace is knowing their deaths were instant, they did not know what hit them, my thoughts are with the families at this most difficult time.
Even more so, I am a everyday layperson, I can see the problem with this attempt. WHY didn’t the paying passengers do their due diligence? I feel it was so cruel to their families to not determine what could happen and ask about a backup plan. So future buyers of sea or outer space expeditions/exploration BEWARE! Neither ‘world’ is forgiving! It’s definitely a muck around and find out!

James Cameron and Robert Ballard - as honest and distinguished as they are in regards to deep sea dives - are also very compassionate. They’re amazing blokes.
I don't know if the people that worked on mans movies would describe James as "compassionate" but you are right in the sense he's very respectful of this situation.
It's not compassionate to criticize the rescue effort as giving "false hope" to the families. He should be grateful that countries tax payers are willing to help millionaire thrill seekers when their hobby gets them in trouble.

I used to look at James Cameron as a bit of an opportunist when it came to the Titanic but he really does know his stuff and like all of us is truly appalled by this tragedy
I was wondering why they were interviewing James Cameron just because he directed a film about the Titanic ... Didn't realize he was such an expert in the subject area! Very enlightening and well spoken!
James Cameron is such an intelligent human being. Just a tenacious creative mind. Every time he speaks about any subject that he’s fascinated by, he just comes across as so well read, practical and thorough
Well there's a whole industry, not just James and Bob. But their perspectives are generally in line with the industry's. The question is "why was this company run in such an ignorantly arrogant way that they didn't take care of things in the industry norm fashion?"
It was an unfortunate event. Unfortunate events are bound to happen when you go 2.5 miles underwater. Unfortunate events are bound to happen when you climb 30,000ft up a mountain. Unfortunate events are bound to happen when you driving an Indy car 230mph. When you make the decision to put your life into these situations, you do it with the understanding of the risks associated with what your doing. You think those 5 souls climbed into that vessel thinking this was some attraction that had no chance of going south? Don’t tarnish their names by assuming their choices were ignorant. This worlds bliss and adventure is constantly being smeared by individuals who think it’s their right to assume responsibility for decisions others make.
James Cameron summed it up perfectly - an avoidable tragedy. These 'reckless entrepreneurs' need to be held accountable for their self-indulgent actions. My heart goes out to the 19 year old who had his whole life in front of him.
Cameron is right - I couldn't fathom how experienced explorers wouldn't have looked with meticulous detail at the submersible & at the company's record before risking their lives on it. The 'risk' was outrageously high & they failed themselves by not doing a proper investigation.
Both Bob and James have great passion, love and concern about diving to the Titanic and being involved with laws about salvaging the wreckage. Respect for both of them.
James Cameron totally hit the point, and the fact there was no remote submersible on the mothership to assist is a massive point! Even if these guys had just suffered a power outage or loss of control, the fact the closest rescue solution was 3 days away is just mind-blowing. With a backup, they could have been down in a few hours to hook on a recovery line. That would have negated all this talk about 96 hours of life support. In the end, it wouldn't have prevented a structural failure, but expertise, experience, good engineering, review and due diligence would have! Rush was nothing more than a fantasist with zero common sense and way too much control. THIS is why CEO's should not be directly involved in the engineering!
Yeah, if he had thought to invest in a rescue solution as a need, then he would have invested more in the original sub in the first place. Maybe nobody would have died. But unfortunately he didn't think that way and it cost him and four others their lives.
“This is just engineering” - I absolutely love this quote and James Cameron is completely spot on. If you’re taking the general public on such a dangerous journey you make absolutely sure this thing is structurally impenetrable. Such an avoidable tragedy and Oceangate are fully to blame.
This was a great interview and they broke it down so the average person could understand. It’s very clear what caused this accident. They knew the moment they heard it lost contact.
@@Free2B3The waivers can be disregarded if it's found that no effort was made to make the sub as safe as possible to make up for its "experimental" nature.
Much respect for these 2 gentlemen. It's a pity they had to remain silent the past few days about this. Even worse that James wasn't listened to when he voiced his concerns about the design and construction of the sub.
Bring back the days of interviewing intelligent experts who offer so much understanding into situations. No political spins, just solid, respectable analysis and conversation with the right people. Thank you for this interview.
As a structural engineer, James Cameron just pointed out two of the three areas that stand out to me as being poorly thought out. 1) carbon fibre is non-ductile and is very direction specific in terms of strength, so it lacks durability and doesnt give much warning before failure 2) The plexi-glass dome window at the front looks to be inadequate given the very high loads 3) To connect the fibre-glass hull and titanium dome, it looks like they used epoxy to glue a titanium ring to the fibre-glass so the two sections could be bolted together. The use of epoxy in this situation seems totally inappropriate.
Exactly my thoughts. That glued ring failed. And carbon fiber cracks under pressure. Its like Tungsten vs Titanium. Tungsten may be harder but it shatters under a hammer.
I like how in another interview James Cameron said Carbon fiber delaminates, where as titanium and steal does not. And that the Titan most likely had alarms that would go off in the sub if the hull was beginning to delaminate
My Buddy just said something similar. He said Carbon fibre performs even worse under stress at those temperatures they would have faced at that depth. Also, mentioned the Glass looking like Spanky and Alphapha from Our Gang took an old dryer door off and stuck it on a cylinder with Epoxy which has ZERO Flex when cured.
At a microscopic level the expansion and contraction of the composite hull would weakened its integrity.... The former owner had got away with 10 previous dives... On the last.... the contraction of the materials was too much to withstand the pressure it was being subjected to... it would have been a bit like squeezing an egg.
Thank you for your honesty! The problem was Stockton, and his ignorance and lack of humility. Anyone who sees otherwise has an issue with accountability.
Oh please. All they are doing is bragging about how they already knew and how they dove deeper with no problems blah blah blah. No sympathy at all for the victims. They coulda saved this interview
@gdc6153 hard head make for a soft behind... They was warned in 2018 and bypass certifications and regulations... Money doesn't make you smart and like my guy said EASILY PREVENTABLE!!
I’m sure many already knew this. I know mechanics, I don’t know submarines but I knew. They just string the family along to give them time to except reality.
It's funny you think of James Cameron as a film maker (which he is), but he also has visited the wreckage sight of the Titanic 33 times and even has been to the Mariana Trench (the deepest part of the ocean). He is literally an expert about deep sea submersibles by this point.
New found respect for Cameron here. I knew he was an expert in the field but I underestimated his true knowledge. He really comes across here as a professional and his judgement call on withholding his suspicions from day one was correct.
Agree! I‘ve heard of him ofc during the years and everything involving the Titanic - but this was the first time I got to see him and heard him talk. Very respectful towards the whole tragedy too.
These two would know what had happened, and it's unfortunate that they had to keep silent during the search. And James is correct; this had nothing to do with millionaires dying or anything, this had to do with them not heeding warnings and going forward with it.
The 19 year old didn't ignore the warnings - according to his aunt, he was afraid to go down and didn't want to, but ended up going to try to get closer to his father and to make his dad proud. It's sad that the only one with any common sense was the youngest and the one with the least say in the mission.
I’d wondered why I hadn’t heard more from James Cameron during all this as a pretty intense expert in this very specific area. But it’s kind of nice to know that he was choosing to hold back a heartbreaking truth until it was a certainty proven by others and without possibility for an alternative. He’s right- if he’d said it the first day or so people would have blasted him for it and said he was being pessimistic and then when it was proven true anyway the masses would still find a way to vilify him for it. I think he did a great job of balancing respect and mourning for the loss their families are feeling right now with the reality that this was a wildly dangerous thing to ever attempt in the first place.
James Cameron made it clear this was not a "wildly dangerous thing". Such trips are safely doable, but difficult/expensive. He designed different vessels that went many times deeper, successfully. He explained that the technology exists to do it safely, but OceanGate didn't use safe technology. Seems they cut corners.
@@keep-ukraine-free this is what happens when you put "innovation" ahead of safety and feel that you can break the rules without consequences. When you're innovating and you're going to do something nobody else is doing, it's important to consider that maybe it's not because you're smarter than they are, it's because they have enough knowledge/experience to know that it's a bad idea. If you're going to go ahead and do it anyway, you'd better do a lot of testing and understand what your data means...the problem with a lot of testing is that people test to succeed instead of testing to try and fail. Like it's often said "safety regulations are written in blood".
@@stephenshoihet2590ndeed! One thing is talking about developing technology meant for mostly superficial daily things, but another is when the level of risk includes the possibility of hurting people. As modern entrepreneurs try to become millionaires (or even more rich than they are already) by attempting to disrupt existing systems there is this feeling that we are constantly becoming more lenient towards such attitude and consequent operations, even when it represents a risk to someone’s life. It’s not something new. History is full of inventors and whatnot that hurt or even killed other people and even themselves just to prove that they could do something different, more convenient, faster, less costly, etc.. Sometimes such might have helped moving things forward indeed, some others it may have actually stalled progress by effect of making people scared of it for the subsequent decades. Whatever the consequence it’s almost never worth to the point where lives are lost, specially today when we have technology, risk analysis and mitigation systematic processes that allow for experimentation at minimum risk levels before scaling the solutions up to fully usable contexts. Like James Cameron said, this is the 21st century. We are now in the possession of development processes that include proper certified level QA systems into the iterative cycles. Sure that may still be too slow for some people who want things to move faster for many reasons (personal dreams, ego, profit..) but it’s no excuse to move things into high risk areas. That carries a very very high cost, far beyond monetary values, that is just not worth it most of the times.
I love the fact that he was straight forward yet respectful about his remarks. Everything the two said makes perfect sense. This situation was indeed unfortunate and I do feel like the technology and engineering behind the sub was the biggest factor. I feel so bad for the families
It blows my mind that some people seem have a problem with Mr. James Cameron, the guy literally explored the Titanic alone 33 times, he was even under deeper sea then the Titanic, he BUILT a sub (or had it built by absolute pros) so I can‘t think of many more people AS QUALIFIED as he is to speak on this. James Cameron is NOT just your regular rich movie director. Plsss
These were the two experts I immediately thought of concerning this tragedy. No one I would trust more to give an informed explanation of what happened.
Agreed! I'm glad to see him getting some love on here, since so many people are so star struck by James Cameron. Ballard was one of the heroes of my childhood, after finding the wreck of the Titanic the year I was born. My dad took me to Woods Hole several times because of it.
Cameron vocalized it, but Ballard's face told the same thing. Both of these men knew this tragedy was inevitable, and they had to bite their tongues until now. Both of these men more than knew what needs to go into diving such a depth, and they knew this sub was nowhere near qualified to dive to Titanic. When you look at the precise engineering and components used for Alvin (WHOI) Nautile (Ifremer) and the MIRs, and compare it to what looked like a natural gas tank, controlled by a $20 game controller, it's comparing a 747 to homemade cardboard wings.
Oh please. The 1st guy started off by saying he knew they were already dead but didn't want to say anything. Ok well don't come out and say it now then. It's almost like they are bragging or something.
33 dives to the Titanic is beyond impressive on its own. AND he sub dove to the Mariana Trench too? Mr Cameron knows what he’s talking about and I trust his judgement on this topic for sure
Huge respect to James Cameron. He knows a thing or two about deep sea dives. Hes done plenty in subs way more secure than the titan. Is anyone else shocked by James Cameron's eloquence and articulation? Just coherent thought patterns and a string of fluid responses, without an "umm" "ahhh" or "you know" in sight. His competence in public speaking and on-air media relations rivals that of the "experts" who are paid big bucks for consultations and speaking engagements. I have a newfound respect for this versatile and multi-faceted director (who just happens to have created 3 of the Top 10 biggest-grossing movies of all time!) I also admire his restraint for holding off on elaborate commentary all week, until the projected oxygen supply depleted and the rescue transitioned to salvage, with cone parts reported being found near the Titanic wreck site - consistent with catastrophic implosion.
James Cameron, apart from his directorial career, is an explorer in his own right (dove numerous times to the Titanic and was one of the first person to dive solo into the Mariana Trench)

@ko7577agreed.

Well said; couldn’t agree more!
💯Well said!
As a structural engineer, James Cameron just pointed out two of the three areas that stand out to me as being poorly thought out.
1) carbon fibre is non-ductile and is very direction specific in terms of strength, so it lacks durability and doesnt give much warning before failure
2) The plexi-glass dome window at the front looks to be inadequate given the very high loads
3) To connect the fibre-glass hull and titanium dome, it looks like they used epoxy to glue a titanium ring to the fibre-glass so the two sections could be bolted together.
Also, mentioned the Glass looking like Spanky and Alphapha from Our Gang took an old dryer door off and stuck it on a cylinder with Epoxy which has ZERO Flex when cured.
wanna talk about the logitech gaming controler ?!

I also admire his restraint for holding off on elaborate commentary all week, until the projected oxygen supply depleted and the rescue transitioned to salvage, with cone parts reported being found near the Titanic wreck site - consistent with catastrophic implosion.
4:55 I mean c'mon, all you have to do is listen.
James Cameron, apart from his directorial career, is an explorer in his own right (dove numerous times to the Titanic and was one of the first person to dive solo into the Mariana Trench)
I read True Love. Congrats
Yeah , a pleasure to hear someone speak who isn't a pinhead
As a father, my heart pains at the loss of the 19 year old.
At least his dad didn’t have to experience the loss himself, so there’s that at least.
@@polishrocker93 but now mother has lost both, I heard he didn't even want to go anyway, he did it because it was a fathers day thing
@@GreatSageSunWukong She's minted now though.
Yeah his rich dad should have taken him kayaking instead.
@@GreatSageSunWukongthat’s so unfair!
Omg, despite I love Titanic, with this interview Cameron really got a lot of my respect. He is literally telling the truth about these expeditions, sth the whole ocean liners (or Titanic) community is unwilling to understand.
