Excellent writing and four extraordinarily gifted actresses. That was all to this series. No gimmicks, no expensive multiple sceneries, not too many guests. Just these four ladies.
None of their characters were retired, though. Blanche worked at a museum, Rose in counciling (and news in the later seasons, I think), Dorothy as a substitute teacher, and Sofia had a few jobs over the show (including fast food).
Iirc, Dorothy, blanche and Rose are in their mid 50s to early 60s and Sophia around 80 years. Even though the actresses themselves weren't too far from each other
And they were not friends until after living together as roommates. Also, the title of the video makes it sound like they were BFFs and then lived together. Lol
"Hey we've all got our sad stories. Look, Blanche, we've practiced for six weeks, we've paid for our costumes, we told everybody we'd be there, now you're not going to wimp out on me. You're going to go to that recital. And if you end up in a puddle tonight, well, you'd just better break in to Singin' in the Rain!"
I give amazing credit to the writers for these lines but the actresses... I bow before your brilliance. These were hilarious. People today should take notes.
She did. In one episode she told a horrible neighbor name Freda Clayton to drop dead. Right after Rose said it the horrible woman drop dead to the floor.. The episode was called It's a miserable life.
She also shot a loaded gun at Blanche’s date and hit the vase. And then there was that one guy she slept with who she killed. And didn’t her husband Charlie die while they were having sex?
Sheldon is like all these ladies. As naive and innocent as Rose As self-centered as Blanche (not to mention both are from south) As feisty and tactless as Sophia And ofcourse as intimidating and serious as Dorothy. But I love my golden girls more
I still can't believe that they're all gone, and I'm not ashamed to admit that that fact hurts a lot. RIP Estelle Getty (July 25, 1923 - July 22, 2008), Bea Arthur (May 13, 1922 - April 25, 2009), Rue McClanahan (February 21, 1934 - June 3, 2010), and Betty White (January 17, 1922 - December 31, 2021). You will all be missed. A lot.

In the United States if you work less than 15 hours a month you are considered retired.
