My 11 yearl old 100% OZ Canvas swag has never leaked from the floor or anywhere else even when submerged in 5 to 10 cm of water during storms. Have never understood the marketing hype of PVC floors. Thanks for sharing. Cheers
@@cyclemoto8744 agree, I reckon the problem came when a lot of manufacturers started using thinner material that isn't really true canvas, then they had to create some other solution for the floor
@@Camping_reviews I think you're spot on. poly cotton for the skin (lower weight than canvas) and PVC (stronger than than poly cotton) for the floor results in a lower cost product than quality canvas. In saying that I can think of plenty of poly cotton swags that are on par for cost with high quality oz canvas swags, in which case the only value proposition is the weight reduction. Cheers.
Yep, SeamGrip is the go to product for sealing pretty much anything that needs to be waterproof. It is also extremely strong, often stronger than the original material & the repair will remain good for decades. Just a tip on Seamgrip it uses moisture from the air to set off. This means that once it has been opened, the rest of the product will set off in the tube and likely be useless next time you want to it. However, there is a solution. Just pop the tube in a small Zip Lock bag then pop it in the freezer. Yes it will still eventually set off in there after several years.
Me too. Apply it with the corner of a sponge, or use scissors to cut a pointy piece of sponge. Or simply use one of those sponge paint brushes you can buy. Done both tents and tarps with it. Never spending money on "fancy" small tubes of seam sealer again. When you look at the ingredients, it's just silicone anyway, at least the ones I've bought in the past. To make it look a bit tidier, you can mask off the seam you want to seal with painters tape before applying the silicon/ turps (it's called white spirit where I am. Mineral spirit is also a name for it in some parts).
and if you are new to it, do the inside as well as the outside for the best coverage. I used a syringe to do mine and treated it like a weld, using a circular motion to not only cover but push/force it into the holes.
My inner 13yr old had a good laugh at the explanation. The 2 finger sent me over the edge. My next birthday is 50.....I shan't bother to attempt any sort of self improve at this stage in life.
Pretty much nailed it Alex!! Well done 🎉 And as we discussed, if your budget only allows for a cheap swag, then that’s the best swag for you as long as you allow for the pros and cons…actually that’s something that can be said about any product. Love ya work…keep it up!!
Bloody champion! I've been dealing with a similar loose stitching issue for years, the stitch just needs to swell more to fill the hole! If all else fails, some silicone to help fill the hole! Passing on this awesome news to my wife right away!
The best way to fix it is really simple... Buy a swag with a canvas floor. You also get less condensation in the swag at night because the whole swag can breath.
Yep. I hear ya. I live in my Rooftop tent. I've had to modify my setup to make sure water runs away from the platform the tent is on. My 'canvas' is fine. The tent is a few years old and has been up for all but a few weeks and has been through some horrendous downpours. I'll have to shoot a video about it.
Thx for the video. I used to ride a road bike, rain, hail or shine. I found Dubbin did wonders for my leathers but it torched the stitching. I ended up with a product called Renapur based on bees 🐝 wax. This was phenomenal. It kept my leathers looking fantastic and any water just beaded and rolled off. It was safe for stitching. You just rub it on with a sponge. That might work really nicely.
I have used this on the side awing covers ...use clear neutral silicone with shell-lite fuel ( white spirits) ..mix 1/4 cup of silicone add the shell-lite and stir until it's a nice fairly thin brush-able mix then apply i have not used this on swags but can't see it not working
Good work Alex - nailed it. Although I am all about premium, I still see a place for a cheap swag if that is what your budget allows for, as long as the cons are considered vs the price. 16 year old me would have loved a top notch swag, but my paper round budget didn't allow for it...would have been very happy with a $120 one albeit a bit leaky!! Factory Seam Sealing is costly, hence the addage you get what you pay for!
It may take a lot of time to "lift" the sealing material onto the tent with a tiny brush. Might be an idea to fill a syringe and use that to apply it, then use the brush to even it out and force it into the seam. A bit like youd(some would) do when painting eg trimming. You use a roll in one hand and a brush in the other, use the roll to get the paint up on the boards, and the brush to make it look pretty. A small brush holds very very small amount of the "active ingredient"

This is a great video and really informative. Keep up the good work. That seam sealer stuff looks like good a thing for any canvas seam that leaks Something else that might work i seen on toyota world runners channel where they mixed a tube of silicon with a couple of litres of acetone to re water proof an old fold over canvas camper, not sure if the canvas would still be able to breath afterwards but seemed to work of them.
season by submerging the whole swag in a bathtub. That way you hit ALL the stitching and fabric inside and out. Do that a couple of times and you are golden. I will however be checking my PVC tubs stitch. thanks for a great vid
Rub Vaseline on the seems. Instant seal, water repellent. Has lasted and held up well on all my camping gear. If a leak does appear, reapply to that area.
Mix polyurethane adhesive/sealant (Adheseal everflex PU-240, 310ml, $12) with turpentine just thin enough to apply with a brush about 50/50. Better economy for large tents or multiple swags.
Well done on the solution for a dodge design, hard to believe it goes into production with the knowledge it may fail. 🤯 Could be the end of camping for some…👍
I had that issue with a kings swag yrs ago sent it back got another one it leaked threw it and got a darche never looked back had it in a heavy storm in the vic high country and kept me dry 👌
I got a southern cross canvas swag ( high end aussie made) my pvc bottom isn’t even a bucket. It just flat and living in vic i do a lot of camping in the rain its never leaked on me
Great video again Alex. You should think about a television career one day. I tried TV a while ago. My agent got me a couple of gigs. One was as the before shot for Gut-Busters. Had to provide my own ill fitting t-shirt. The other was for A Current Affair. You ever see those episodes where they go on about the obesity epidemic? The ones where they show the body but no headshots? That was probably me. Had to fork out for my own bloody sausage roll! Cheap arses. Just beware when you go down that route. Cheers Camper
Great analysis 👍🏻 What about some adding some seam tape on the inside to keep the plain seem pointing up. That way the water should just slide right past.
8:20 I used to use a spray on sealant. I think the company isn't doing so well since PFAS type carcinogens became evil. Scotchgard? There was that grey stuff too, but it is only good for rigid pipes and iron.
I was gifted the same swag. Did the same process of seasoning it as you did, with the same results. So I went to anaconda and purchased their “canvas re-seasoning” product. I painted it onto all seams, seals or anywhere that a needle would be used in manufacturing. To date (used 5 times with twice in heavy weather), it has stayed water proof. Will recheck mine again after watching your vid. Appreciate your review !
Silicone and Mineral spirits, thins it down nicely and you can waterproof a ton of other items while you are at it... As for applicators you can get the syringes with a fine tip and have at it.
I was told not to get a pvc swag in the shop. Not because of rain but condensation. Swag placement is important. I used to put a tarp out or get a stretcher if it's bad.
you were right the first time it's not really a "fatal flaw" with pvc bucket floors. it's an issue with cheap construction. i've had touring tents with bucket floors that go one step further and have bucket floor to canvas strip then canvas strip to canvas wall the wall extending past the bucket floor close to ground level so water sheets off the only stitching exposed to rain is canvas to canvas and the tent has to be in 6" or more of water before the bucket floor could even leak at the stitching.
It’s the swag’s seams, not the PVC side of things. Never had an issue with my 23zero swag after seasoning it about 3-4 times. You also answered your own question regarding the stitching of cheap swags = water through the seams/stitching..
I was given a swag, that someone used in the rain and then packed it in the plastic bag it came in, went home and didn’t air it out. The whole thing was mould. I washed the whole thing, inside n out with vinegar, hosed it out, dried it, THEN I painted the entire exterior canvas, seems etc with a canvas rewaterproofing product. This stuff looks a bit like woodworking glue, but gums up any hole, seem and I even went over the zips with no problem.
What is the appeal of canvas swags vs freestanding ultralight tents? You can get affordable 1-2 person freestanding tents that you can sit up in and have all your gear in too, for the same weight as a canvas swag that you can’t sit up in and very little if any room for gear 🤔
It reminds me of a PC Magazine add for the Y2K bug, It was Y2KY gell, for those wanting to put for digits where only two would go. Seem seal was a pdoduct I used 25 years ago for nilon tent seams. Also the old method to waterproof cotton tents was to mix bees wax with Turpentine that desolved the wax then paint it on the fabric or seems. It saturates the cloth and when the turps evaporatest it leaves the wax behind 🏴☠
Why do you think "seasoning" will make anything swell and stay swollen? It'll shrink back as soon as it dries. They should have used a waterproofing glue in the seam before they sowed it.
Hmmm I believe that was a Kings swag. I think that’s part of the problem. They have a good warrant, so I would get your money back and get a good one. I’ve had 2 swags over 30 years. Darche swags are great in my opinion. I only upgrade for more space. My original one is still going after 32 years. i passed it onto my nephew.l
Best way to season a swags is completley submerge in a bathtub (no mattress) soak it overnight ring it out best you can then set it up outside doing all zips up and let it dry, done should only have to do this once .😊
3:08 Thats the limit of my primary school sex education discussions in. The 80’s. The issue is the stitching is not cotton. Most stitching is nylon. Nylon doesn’t swell like cotton in canvas..therefore you have to seam seal all those regions. OR be a real bloke and sleep in a hammock under a fly sheet.
What brand of swag is that ? Ive had my kings big daddy in 2 tropical cyclones now and it doesn't leak at all , Its been set up multiple times for a week in rain never had a problem . They test these tings by setting them up zip them up and they throw them in a flowing river tied to the shore for a few hours its crazy how waterproof some of these swags are !
This is the very same brand believe it or not! Other comments on this video have suggested that the manufacturing standards have gone backwards in the last couple of years I have seen the video you speak of and wonder if they did a dirty and swapped the swag out for a dry one. There is a cut in the video, so they would have had the opportunity to do that.
@Camping_reviews That's very possible mate , I want to think they wouldn't do that but in today's society anything is possible . I also have a kings tourer roof top tent that doesn't leak , One of the roof bars bent like a banana but still don't leak . 😂✌️
Thanks heaps for the video. A lot of people say kings swags don't leak. But sadly ours have. But I think maybe they have changed the design or quality of materials. Maybe the older one are better. But happy to have a solution to the problem.
Easy fix a garage bag a bottle of shellite a tube of silicone, mix the shellite and silicone in the garage bag until all dissolved and use a paint brush to apply it
And this is why you spend more than the minimum amount for a swag. You do your research and get quality materials from a quality brand. I have the exact same designed swag, from a quality brand not Kings, have been in torrential rain and not a drop inside.
Interesting, Once I woke up in my swag with the mattress soaked and it hadn't rained at all ???, not sure what happened but I had drunk about 20 bush chooks and a bottle of bundy ???, strange :/
Kings.... Yeah I went straight for a top quality Australian made swag and never had an issue. As with most things, it's best to save up and buy higher quality.
Not necessarily mate just because its expensive and so called " top quality" doesn't mean its any better than other brands , My $600 darche leaked through after only 24hrs of rain . I had a big daddy kings that stood in the heavy rain for a week straight no leaks , The inside canvass seemed damp but no water inside and dry bedding .
@aussieguy3689 Kings from a few years back were not bad for the price but their quality has gone downhill since. Darche I've not used but I don't think they're Australian Made either. China can make good stuff, no doubt about that, but it's always a race to the bottom for profit. The brand will lower quality and increase profits until customers stop buying. Then slightly raise quality or decrease price accordingly so it's "good enough value" and hope you'll buy another when it breaks. I've got more faith in a small Australian company making a solid product that'll last a long time and I think we should all support Australian manufacturers wherever possible. Southern Cross even do repairs on common things like zips, buckles and holes, they take care of their customers. Each to their own though, everyone has a family budget and I respect that. I'll get off the soap box now :-)
Not entirely unexpected behaviour, it looks like some comments are being hidden from this conversation. It may think I'm trying to advertise something to you, which of course I'm not 😅
@@stuz32 Agree 100% mate in todays market greed comes first customer satisfaction and product quality come last unfortunately , Ive also got a " jolly swagman " Aussie made swag its 4 years old , The canvass has shrunk and the zipper on flyscreen is busted but wasn't a bad swag when new think i paid around $500 for it at a camping show i visited in Tamworth NSW . ✌️
I bought a sar major swag . Did the hose crap over and over . Well it rains and leaks and becomes a swimming pool . I took it back they didnt give a fuk that it ruined things i had in my swag aswel as the matress . Just buy a tent . Fuk these crap expensive swags . Never had a tent leak on me before . My swag now just sits in the garage decomposing .

Seam tape, seam sealer... I've made many cheap tents to perform well using it and a silicon water proofing applied to the fabric.

Swags are great for anyone under 45 ... I've now got a proper tent and stretchers !
How lazy. They could have added seam tape to this average design and got away with it for 95% of use cases
Rub a candle or some dubbin along the stitching 👍
I've never had an issue with kings deluxe swag
I seal my seams right out of the box, we've got an old cheap festival tent, that hasn't leaked yet.
Your hand gestures 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
And this is why you spend more than the minimum amount for a swag. You do your research and get quality materials from a quality brand. I have the exact same designed swag, from a quality brand not Kings, have been in torrential rain and not a drop inside.
Interesting, Once I woke up in my swag with the mattress soaked and it hadn't rained at all ???,
not sure what happened but I had drunk about 20 bush chooks and a bottle of bundy ???, strange :/
I wear adult diapers at night. This seems to soak up any of that mystery moisture that makes its way into the mattress 👌
I'm looking at all the 'hang points' (trees) behind him and thinking how much I love my Hammock.
Don't mind a good hammock camp myself and have actually done so in that area before!
Kings.... Yeah
I went straight for a top quality Australian made swag and never had an issue.
Coat the joins with dubbon
Can’t beat good quality stitching…
Ripper episode 👍
