This is the best instructional guide on RUclips for this topic. So yes, apparently we do need to learn how to go to the toilet....again.

Great video. I have the 365 model but never had to use it. Have all the chemicals and toilet paper and now I might actually know how to use them when that day comes. Many thanks for making this video and its good to see you back on RUclips. Merry Christmas.

Thanks Alex, great 😃 nfo mate. Another hot tip for you, when emptying the toilet, don't push the breather button unit the unit is tilting into the dump point, otherwise you can get a back flow through the breather button. This happened to me, but only once, and I wasn't wearing gloves 😢

Trick I also use with mine.. get an old plastic water bottle and drill a small hole in the lid, fill it with water and it makes for a good "water pistol" to blast off any stickies..

I have the smaller Thetford porta potty. Stand on your knees in front of it and it's the right height to not make a mess (and it's easy to aim when half asleep middle of the night).

That is mate for producing and sharing. I have one of the models you mentioned. Purchased for the better half as an incentive to go bush. Sadly it has been in storage now for 4 years. Especially as I am used to natural relent 😂. So now I have a job to check and test the fantastic machine as someone has shown interest (told me) they now want to come bush….yes I also have to arrange a shower.
Suggestion’s of reviews- kick arse portable shower (the little one with 5vdc pump), hot water systems, creek water pumps and associated filtration etc,for showers and not drinking water. Drinking water is a complete another topic.

Good to see someone talking about this aspect of camping. I think it is one thing often over looked but also something we all need to do. Personally I have 2X cheaper chemical toilets I picked up on Marketplace. A 20L for the longer trips or with the wife & a 10L for solo trips. I strap it to the roof or throw it inside the camper if we are taking that. I used to use the green satchels and they were great at reducing smells and breaking things down BUT, as much of my camping is done in State Forests it meant I had to bring it home and empty it. I have stopped using any chemicals & yes after a few days it gets a bit on the nose but I can now empty them into drop toilets, septic or the dunny at home as it is only my waste, paper & water. I then bring them home & give them a good clean out. I take 10L water containers with me and because the flusher is not the best I just use some of that to help rinse the bowl.

The Thetford (Porta Potti) brand is the BEST in this type of gear and best by quite a long way. We have tried others and they don't stack up for a whole host of reasons. With some the bowl is too small for big bums, others, like Fiama, fill water from the back not the top and they are a huge pain to clip back together single handed in a small space (such as the toilet cubilcle of a motorhome. We have used Thetford for decades now and they are excellent. Go for the bigger tank if you have the space to carry it but with 2 people you will still be emptying it every 3-4 days. Get a small folding trolley to carry it to the dump point if you are camping - that will save your back because they get HEAVY! The old water pumps are ok but the new pump style is better. We don't use the nasty chemicals in our Thetford, just water in the top and NOTHING in the lower tank. We stopped using the blue stuff years ago IT IS TERRIBLE FOR THE ENVIRONMENT. So what happens in our lower tank, well it all turns to mush anyway and pours out easily into a dump point. Does it stink? Yes, but not as badly as you might think. If you use a pop-up shower tent or use your loo in a trailer (like we do with the Coaster) smell isn't a big issue and we are 100% pit toilet friendly. Good tip about getting a better bag. The Thetford bag is very meh. Hahaha, love the lever before lid bit. that is a real trap for the newbies. We use any type of toilet paper and it really hasn't been an issue. Blade closed with water in the bowl, blade open when done, then closed again with more water for cleaning up. My hint, DO NOT have a hot Indian curry and then use one of these LOL

great video, wish this was out before we bought our porta potty, because I am a tight arse we have never used chemicals in our toilet. We have never noticed it smelling that much, the No 2's break down on their own, by the time we get home from the weekend it is all liquid, including the whatever brand toilet paper we use.
If you do No 1's in the toilet, No 1's contain ammonia which will kill the bacteria that breaks down the No 2's, so it will smell a little more. We do remote camping where it is easy to go behind a tree for No 1's.
We bought the smallest model and never use the flush mechanism, we just have a small bottle of water to conserve volume, or just use paper to keep the bowl clean. Using these techniques it easily lasts a weekend and tip it down the toilet when we get home.
We would love to know more about the Joolca GottaGo Toilet, it looks very interesting.

The NapiSan thing is used by many people and we did try it but in the end found that the best option was no chemicals at all. It sounds weird but it does work (see my other comments for more on that.) Oh, we do operate 2 portable dunnies in the Coaster. A fiama that we are stuck with because of design, inside, and in that we DO use disinfectant due to pong issues but that is only for No,1s. The Thetford we use in the trailer gets no chemicals in that and it is for No.2s.. There was a recipe for top tank chemicals we once used that worked well, I think it was couldy amonia, borax and Pine-O-Clean. 1 cup of each to make a concentrate. If you have to use chemicals, this is much better than that awful blue stuff.

What about if you're not at a dump point or toilet and just out in the bush where do you dump it. Do National Parks have dump points?

    • @Camping_reviews
      @Camping_reviews  2 дня назад +2

Good question! Some of the bigger national parks do have dump points, google maps will actually show you dump points if you search for them. So do some traveller apps like Wikicamps. The alternative is composting porta-loos, they can go weeks without emptying. I'll certainly have to do a piece on these in the future.

I just use the collapsible portable ones, double biodegradable bag, wood pellets and powder gel that makes the waist biodegradable. When in a paid campground I only use it at night since I don’t want to walk the distance and have a bear encounter, don’t ask how I know this, luckily was just a mock attack that left me shaking.

We are lazy when it comes to storage. Never emptied the top tank in the whole time we have been using these dunnies and a clean out is usually just a flush out with a hose at the last dump point we use for the tip. So far (and i am talking years and years) we have never had an issue with a seal giving up.

Lining the bowl with poo tickets can help too. Then when solids drop into the bowl they sit on the paper and then all slide down the hole when flushed.
A bit of a spray with silicone spray also helps make the bowl less prone to skid marks.
