Great video. I have the 365 model but never had to use it. Have all the chemicals and toilet paper and now I might actually know how to use them when that day comes. Many thanks for making this video and its good to see you back on RUclips. Merry Christmas.
Hi Alex. After watching your dunny review the other day I have been watching some of your other reviews. I actually saw you at the 4X4 show talking to Matt, I was sitting on a chair about a metre away. I also have an Engel fridge I bought in the early eighties and it has been running non stop as a beer fridge or a freezer for around 37 years although it was battling today with 45 degrees. Normally around minus 18 degrees and just noticed it is only at minus 4 degrees, it was a hot one. Had to laugh when you were playing the bongo and whether Warby up on the hill over the river could hear you. Yes I am sort of a local, live about 80kms to the east of there.
Popup ensuite suits my type of camping been using them from day one never had any issues with flexible poles
An easy solution is just to set up a tarp over the swag.
Hi Alex. With the chemicals I purchased a couple of one litre containers with the small 100mi tank that are common for two stroke oil too measure the chemicals. I also use poo tickets placed in the bowl over the hole to keep bowl clean, when finished open and flush.
@@garybaker508 I LOVE both of these tips! That mixing bottle idea is definitely one I'll adopt myself
Picked up some tips thanks. Personally I have not noticed the difference between our regular paper Who Gives a Crap and the one lot of Thetford paper we started with.
Aww man.... time for another dip bonanza. Actually this just triggered a memory!! please camp review the bucket required to make a certain type on Sunday!!...
Past Alex looks familiar....
I’m not even interested in buying a chem toilet but that video was great!
One of the best reviews yet, Alex. Keep up the great work!!!
Good to see someone talking about this aspect of camping. I think it is one thing often over looked but also something we all need to do. Personally I have 2X cheaper chemical toilets I picked up on Marketplace. A 20L for the longer trips or with the wife & a 10L for solo trips. I strap it to the roof or throw it inside the camper if we are taking that. I used to use the green satchels and they were great at reducing smells and breaking things down BUT, as much of my camping is done in State Forests it meant I had to bring it home and empty it. I have stopped using any chemicals & yes after a few days it gets a bit on the nose but I can now empty them into drop toilets, septic or the dunny at home as it is only my waste, paper & water. I then bring them home & give them a good clean out. I take 10L water containers with me and because the flusher is not the best I just use some of that to help rinse the bowl.
Great video, Alex. we have the 365 & had it for a few years now. Thanks for doing the research & sharing your tips - well done mate
Fantastic episode, thanks for coming back. Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
A great insight. Who knew?
When I camp, I focus on Optimizing. I most enjoy outdoor experiences that give me comforts similar to my suburban house; and do it with the least weight and volume of gear. I like simple, durable, compact, light-weight, multi-purpose items; and I'm asking if you and other folks in AUS offer camp gear that we in USA have not seen or contemplated. One of my favorite features of the YT channel, "Welcome To The Outdoors", are kit from AUS, NZ and CAN. Please share unique items from your part of the world; wholly new items or modifications of established items. ~ Steven, Utah
Thanks for the great comment Steven! I'm ALL about gear, and especially the more interesting and unique stuff, so stay tuned :)
That is mate for producing and sharing. I have one of the models you mentioned. Purchased for the better half as an incentive to go bush. Sadly it has been in storage now for 4 years. Especially as I am used to natural relent 😂. So now I have a job to check and test the fantastic machine as someone has shown interest (told me) they now want to come bush….yes I also have to arrange a shower. Suggestion’s of reviews- kick arse portable shower (the little one with 5vdc pump), hot water systems, creek water pumps and associated filtration etc,for showers and not drinking water. Drinking water is a complete another topic.
Thanks for all the info. For some reason there isnt a lot of info like this out there, so i really appreciate this video.
The 365 is great for people with bad knees.
Such an easy watch. I am now the world’s foremost expert on bush dunnies without even realising it. Thank you
I swear by the Porta Pak sachets. Always use them in the caravan.

Thanks for the heads up. I wonder if the affiliate program has a block on VPNs or something...I'll have to read deeper
@@Camping_reviews if I type in the actual website address, that works.
Well done Alex, covering a topic that needs to be covered, ahem, pun not intended.
I have the smaller Thetford porta potty. Stand on your knees in front of it and it's the right height to not make a mess (and it's easy to aim when half asleep middle of the night).
great video, wish this was out before we bought our porta potty, because I am a tight arse we have never used chemicals in our toilet. We have never noticed it smelling that much, the No 2's break down on their own, by the time we get home from the weekend it is all liquid, including the whatever brand toilet paper we use. If you do No 1's in the toilet, No 1's contain ammonia which will kill the bacteria that breaks down the No 2's, so it will smell a little more. We do remote camping where it is easy to go behind a tree for No 1's. We bought the smallest model and never use the flush mechanism, we just have a small bottle of water to conserve volume, or just use paper to keep the bowl clean. Using these techniques it easily lasts a weekend and tip it down the toilet when we get home. We would love to know more about the Joolca GottaGo Toilet, it looks very interesting.
Ended up using a scoop of laundry detergent (usually napisan) in our caravan toilet due to the cost savings - Was emptying that bad boy every second day 😢
@@AustralianRuralAdventures you would've been spending like 50 bucks a week on chemicals at that rate! 🫨
Alex, you really know your sh!t mate! 😆
You have no idea how long I've been waiting for this video. Thanks!
Thanks mate - that was the most comprehensive and amusing instructional use of the PortaPottie I have ever seen - you're a champion. A difficult subject I know but you nailed it an think you deserve a medal of some sort ❤😂
I liked the bit where you got sh*t faced and didn't even see ya sink a single tinny
Great review! No BS here.
Lining the bowl with poo tickets can help too. Then when solids drop into the bowl they sit on the paper and then all slide down the hole when flushed. A bit of a spray with silicone spray also helps make the bowl less prone to skid marks.
The fewer scratches in the plastic the better.
@@wobblysauce therefore scraping it down with a stick is discouraged.
Rag on a stick... skip the toilet.
Thanks Alex, great 😃 nfo mate. Another hot tip for you, when emptying the toilet, don't push the breather button unit the unit is tilting into the dump point, otherwise you can get a back flow through the breather button. This happened to me, but only once, and I wasn't wearing gloves 😢
Great video
Thank you for the video. I have borrowed a toilet that we need to stay at a campground this Christmas and had no idea how to use it. Cheers!!
I LOVE it when things just line up like this! Hope you have an awesome break 🙂

G'day camper. These need to be compulsory for anyone camping without a drop toilet facility. Stop burying your crap and toilet paper! I think I have the thetford 365 with the electronic flusher. It's a little taller than the others I've seen. Blacksmith make a decent bag that's half canvas and half pvc. Grouse video as always.
I agree! It's something I'm going to try and gently suggest to people through this channel and hopefully make the gradual shift away from burying waste. Sure it was best practise years ago but with the number of people going bush these days it's just not sustainable anymore.
Fantastic info right there. I hope everyone that watches uses your Snowy’s link to purchase their consumables & you get bit of a kickback $. Bravo!
At home to stop the skid marks and also to stop the splash I line the bowl with dunny paper so I guess you could do the same if you’re not a good shot in the porta potty and you could have the slide open or shut.
Cool video buddy, loved the splatter shot, so funny, I don’t know why people get shy about emptying it, doesn’t smell with the blue chemical
The NapiSan thing is used by many people and we did try it but in the end found that the best option was no chemicals at all. It sounds weird but it does work (see my other comments for more on that.) Oh, we do operate 2 portable dunnies in the Coaster. A fiama that we are stuck with because of design, inside, and in that we DO use disinfectant due to pong issues but that is only for No,1s. The Thetford we use in the trailer gets no chemicals in that and it is for No.2s.. There was a recipe for top tank chemicals we once used that worked well, I think it was couldy amonia, borax and Pine-O-Clean. 1 cup of each to make a concentrate. If you have to use chemicals, this is much better than that awful blue stuff.
We are lazy when it comes to storage. Never emptied the top tank in the whole time we have been using these dunnies and a clean out is usually just a flush out with a hose at the last dump point we use for the tip. So far (and i am talking years and years) we have never had an issue with a seal giving up.
You're a wealth of knowledge Marc! I appreciate you.
This has to be the sh@#iest video you have made.
I agree. Absolute s#$tshow!
The Thetford (Porta Potti) brand is the BEST in this type of gear and best by quite a long way. We have tried others and they don't stack up for a whole host of reasons. With some the bowl is too small for big bums, others, like Fiama, fill water from the back not the top and they are a huge pain to clip back together single handed in a small space (such as the toilet cubilcle of a motorhome. We have used Thetford for decades now and they are excellent. Go for the bigger tank if you have the space to carry it but with 2 people you will still be emptying it every 3-4 days. Get a small folding trolley to carry it to the dump point if you are camping - that will save your back because they get HEAVY! The old water pumps are ok but the new pump style is better. We don't use the nasty chemicals in our Thetford, just water in the top and NOTHING in the lower tank. We stopped using the blue stuff years ago IT IS TERRIBLE FOR THE ENVIRONMENT. So what happens in our lower tank, well it all turns to mush anyway and pours out easily into a dump point. Does it stink? Yes, but not as badly as you might think. If you use a pop-up shower tent or use your loo in a trailer (like we do with the Coaster) smell isn't a big issue and we are 100% pit toilet friendly. Good tip about getting a better bag. The Thetford bag is very meh. Hahaha, love the lever before lid bit. that is a real trap for the newbies. We use any type of toilet paper and it really hasn't been an issue. Blade closed with water in the bowl, blade open when done, then closed again with more water for cleaning up. My hint, DO NOT have a hot Indian curry and then use one of these LOL
What about if you're not at a dump point or toilet and just out in the bush where do you dump it. Do National Parks have dump points?
Good question! Some of the bigger national parks do have dump points, google maps will actually show you dump points if you search for them. So do some traveller apps like Wikicamps. The alternative is composting porta-loos, they can go weeks without emptying. I'll certainly have to do a piece on these in the future.
Big plus for a review of composting toilets .. especially those that separate no 1 from no 2.
Went straight for the tethford 365 (with the full gauge in the front) and that grab me gear bag 👌👌 sorted, you dont wanna mess and have a shit day 💩
Excellent video Alex, very well presented. Always wondered how these things worked
Thanks! Yep I had no idea either and the prospect of it was scary to me. Not so bad once you're used to it
My wife & couple of friends had to empty it once , as it was full & they wanted to use it . Boys were out of camp . This particular day they were all hung over . Didn’t go down well .😂😂
Ohhhh the only way I can see this being worse is if it was 35 degrees plus 😆 funny to me how cleaning toilets at home usually ends up in the hands of ladies, but when it comes to these things it's through and through the men's job.
you Sir are an Asset. Cheers.
Great topic and well done too. Thanks Alex.
Glad you enjoyed it!
We've had some pretty good success with the Aqua Chem blue 'tea bags.' Chuck one in at the start of the trip and flush a small bit of water. No blue stains anywhere.
