- Snapping turtles on Earth are represented by two genera: common and alligator snappers. In Kaimere, both Earth genera have representative species, along with an entire family unique to the planet. The adaptability of this clade is key to their widespread success.
Songs of the Inland Sea is the sequel to Tales of Kaimere! It is a nautical anthology, with all six short stories and novellas taking place in aquatic settings. There are heists on a ship, a desperate chase through a marsh, and a survival story from the perspective of a killer whale!

My expectations were met and far exceeded lmao. The dragon turtle and marine snapper may just have claimed a spot at the top of my list of favorite creatures of Kaimere. Amazing as always truly!! So excited for the Permian islands as well!
Thanks so much I appreciate it! Really happy with how they came together. The marine snapper in particular made me want to do more sea turtles and turtles in general. Loved blending that shell!
@@TalesofKaimere What's your E-Mail ?
It's nice to known that our own current Alligator snapping turtle (Macrochelys temminckii) is present on Kaimere, as on Earth, and thrive a lot !
Even if limited to a single restricted area, but noneless, thriving as a common and not in danger species, as the Coyote or the White-tailed Deer. Another iconic of North America animal that find his home in this weird yet facinating world that is Kaimere !
Now i want to see a fight between the Dragon Turtle and the Odaga (Godzilla-like notosuchian of the inland sea) for pretty clear reasons.
Also, i can't wait to finally see what roams the Permian Islands!!!
It seems Keenan is really dedicated in creating in Kaimere DnD setting. I wouldn't be suprised if kaimeran dragons will have colour morphs similar to most iconic DnD dragons.
It's interesting that, like the Chalicotherinae with the Hugor, the Alligators Snappers became extinct a first time entirely, before being re-introduce again on Kaimere with another single species from a apart and more recent Harvest.
We have snappers where I live, and I love them. They're so cool and important to our ecosystem.
People are scared of them over here and I guess I understand, but they'll never hurt you if you respect them and their space. They're lovely.
Absolutely agree! I worked at a camp in the Adirondacks for a few years. Lots of common snappers in the lake. I've never had any trouble with them. Had one that sometimes vibed with me while I drew on the beach. Even accidentally shoved one while doing a lifeguard drill under the docks and no blood was shed!
At most, I’ve had them take fish off my line and out of my fishnets, but that’s a far cry from them being hyper aggressive finger snatchers. They really do just prefer to be left alone
As a turtle, I am very happy that my relatives are doing great on kaimere
Kind of interesting to hear that the Dynastic extinction had such an effect on fresh-water turts and crocs, given how they waltz through the K-Pg event on Earth.
Well most things within a couple hundred thousand miles were wiped out, so there's a pretty heavy bias toward more recent animals. It wasn't total annihilation, but new Miocene animals were brought in great numbers before residents had time to recuperate. Given time I'm confident the resident turtles and crocs could have rebounded as they did on Earth.
I knew that the meadow snapper was going to be big but I didn't not expect it to be THIS BIG 😱! It can literally bite a person in half. Dragon turtle is definitely a fitting name for it.
The next episode is going to e so good! I can't wait!
Thanks a bunch! Yeah as a longtime D&D player, a dragon turtle just felt like a good name for it.
Wow, I didn't know you had snapping turtles in Kaimere. I got to say the dragon turtles and marine snappers really scare me since I'm used to alligator snapping turtles biting people's hands off in Louisiana and I bet they can bite a Kaimeran in half with their strong jaws. But I bet they are hunted for their meat being cooked for different meals like gumbo but I'm also thinking of the kaiju Gamera since you have giant turtles
Oh yeah lots of people hunt them. Really good eating! Only ever had common snapper myself but I've heard good things about gator snappers.
@@TalesofKaimere Haha, I never had turtle before but I have eaten American alligator before which is delicious
@@TalesofKaimere Hey dude , I sended you pics . Did you receive my e-mail ? ❤
I did not see this coming but let me tell you this is a fantastic addition to Kaimere! I'm definitely adding these dudes to the list! (Edit) and as someone who's worked with Snappers before let me tell you the medow dragon was horrifying to think about.
Thank you! Was a ton of fun to put together and I've got a lot of fond memories of snappers myself. Cheers!
@@TalesofKaimere Cheers!
The Dragon Turtle show perfectly that there always a giant, frightening version for any kind of animal on Kaimere !
Really love the majestic Dragon Turtle. That big boy would look so amazing in real life. Excellent episode Keenan.
Thanks so much! I would definitely love to see one (at a safe distance of course)
Cool! It’s nice to see these Tarasque-like creatures thriving on Kaimere. I like their designs and the believability of their existence. In a dinosaur dominated world.
Speaking of which, are there any monsters or demons made by the first children or otherwise resembling the mythical Tarasque?
Thank you! I do have a lot of demons and creations of the First Children that draw inspiration from mythology so I won't rule it out!
And even some that aren’t man made
Haven't heard that bayou theme since your Hippo episode. These turtles are massive. I'm making new turtles for my fantasy world too, including a giant sea turtle that is an extremely formidable apex predator.
Me during the Prairie Below The Waves episode: wow I wanna swim and sail in the seagrass meadows alongside the sirenians, the daikogen and the mogao!
Me after seeing the meadow snapper: dry land it is!
Yeah I wanted to try and get him done for that episode but just didn't have the time. Not a super common animal, certainly not at that size, but is certainly an important member of the cast!
A simple, less long but nice and good video as usual !
It's, i think, good to have less complex, more shorter and simple videos time to time, between bigs videos.
That give a welcomed breath when we follow and watch the videos.
The dragon turtle and marine snapper are my favourite critters you’ve done so far! Absolutely mortified to hear any of these wonderful shelled friends are hunted, and hope they devour all hunters who dare face them.
omg, Im actually first!! loved the video, Keenan! excellent work, as always
Snapping turtles are gnarlly, I can imagine they'd be a dangerous adversary particularly for young and inquisitive kura jaku. I can imagine the mighty swamp kings being sometimes seen with missing fingers from 'I said put me down!' bites and toes from 'Don't step on me!' bites received as juveniles and adolescents.
Nice to see they’re thriving in Kaimere. I’m not too surprised though, common snappers in particular are extremely adaptable and can even be sometimes found in the city relaxing in ditches or canals here in Baton Rouge, LA.
Absolutely! Super resilient animals!
I love the music !!!
She give really a Western movie Florida swamp vibes that fitt really this epiosde given to the titular subject !
bro that marine snapper one was so creative, and the design was amazing idek how u do it bro, u too creative 🤣🤣 keep it up, kaimere is slowly becoming more of a living breathing world every video
Thank you so much!!
I've always liked turtles, and snapping turtles are some particularly cool ones.
They really are neat!
This was an unexpected video to say the least, but a very pleasant surprise. Never realized snapping turtles are in Kaimere, but it's cool that they are, keep up the good work Keenan!
Thanks so much!
Always a good day when kaimere drops
Ooo I've been looking forward to the Permian islands being covered
The dragon turtle is straight up bowser. Can't wait to learn more about the dragons and other weird creatures they share their home with.
Side note how do you prevent yourself from copying others people work.I have recently started posted art on deviantart for my speculative biology project and there was a comment on my first deviation saying "kaimere 2.0".This made me feel guilty because it looks like I been copying your ideas.Any advice?
Heck yeah! I’m very excited for them.
I generally don’t worry too much. Originality is a fuzzy topic. Even my most unique designs take heavy inspiration from the natural world and media I like. Kaimere itself is basically just a blend of Narnia and Dinotopia.
Heeeeeeeell yeeeeeaaaaaah, the Permian Islands are coming baaabyyyyy!!!!
Excellent episode, but the news at the end is what really made me excited!
Heck yeah!! Glad to hear it.
Hooray finally after much teasing general vagueness about the Permian island fauna hints were finally gonna see the Permian island heck xuno wasn’t mentioned by name In kaishel video
This was cool. And the music quite fitting. Just need a character that has a tame dragon turtle and plays banjo on it's back.
I think this episode has my favorite artwork out of all of them. The shots of turtles in their environment are fantastic and while I prefer other Kaimeran creature designs to the Dragon Turtle it is easily the most realistic looking one.
1. How exactly do humans manage to hunt Dragon turtles?
2. Why are marine snappers considered the favorite of other large predators?
3. Are there any other species of turtle or tortoise larger than the DT or MS?
Thank you!
1. Nets, spears, and lots of determination.
2. Well large turtles in general. Lots of good meat but slow.
3. Possibly a sea turtle or two but certainly not anything terrestrial
Excellent music selection. Though now I feel I should be watching this over a plate of biscuits and gravy with grits.
Heck yeah. I used it for hippos and it seemed the only possible choice.
I would imagine that the smaller snapper species would be much less aggressive, due to the presence of dinosaurs. If one were to bite a sauropod in the ankle for self defense, that snapper is going to become paste.
I love animals, but I will admit, I get creeped out by snapping turtles. So this was me when you presented the dragon turtle.
Me learning about the dragon turtle: "No, no no no no no NO!!"
"While not specialized maneaters, it's not uncommon for them to attack swimmers when the opportunity
presents itself."
Me upon hearing that: "Aw H-H-H-H-HEEELLLL NO!!"
Haha yeah they’re quite frightening!
I love that this came up right after the new tmnt movie trailer dropped
Couldn't have timed it better lol
I love snapping turtles! There’s one that lives in the lake in the forest behind my house. I call him Razor due to his beak. He’s pretty chill for a common snapping turtle.
Also, aren’t dragon turtles a monster from Dungeons & Dragons? I remember learning about this particular beast.
Heck yeah! Snappers are very cool. Despite a formidable reputation (which is earned) I've found them to be very easygoing in my interactions with them.
They are indeed, and that was my reference! Played D&D since I was very little and have come across a few dragon turtles myself.
It would be cool if Kaimere castles had one of these beasts living in a moat. Might deter lots of the smaller predators from getting too close.
Considering I've seen a young snapper kill a sub adult duck they are fully capable of the killing game near there own size claim
The dragon turtle makes me want to see a large omnivorous meiolania!
As if the oceans of Kaimere weren’t dangerous enough… The portal just had to bring these monsters to the planet!
Haha no mercy!
Keenan's Social Account Post descriptions :
- Marine Snapper :
"The marine snapper is closer to sea turtles than the meadow snapper they were named after, but it was long assumed they were either hybrids or a snapper that took to open water.
In truth they are protostegids, a turtle clade which has been extinct on Earth since the Cretaceous but was widespread on Kaimere until the Dynastic Extinction, at which point only two small genera survived. The marine snapper has returned to the greater size of their ancestors, exceeding even the Cretaceous Archelon in size."
"Long considered an oceanic cousin of the dragon turtle, or perhaps a hybrid of them and sea turtles, the marine snapper is now recognized as a true sea turtle, either a Protostegid or convergently similar animal to the famous Archelon."
- Common Snapper :
"The common snapper or serpent turtle is found throughout the known world. While their ancestor came to Kaimere 8 million years ago, the modern populations share a common ancestor around one million years ago that spread from Arvelith wetlands to both continents and Pakardia."
"The common snapper is by far the most widespread and successful of the group within the known world. At one time there were as many as a dozen species, but a recent arid period lowered the sea levels enough for a population explosion by Arvelith snappers which now dominate."
- Alligator Snapping Turtle :
"The alligator snapping turtle came during the interrupted harvest. By the time of their arrival, the common snapper from Arvel had outcompeted other snapper freshwater species. Alligator snappers are found in the river systems of Qajar and much of northern Arvel."
"Most snappers in the Alligator snapper lineage were outcompeted long ago. A small population of alligator snappers from Florida taken during the Interrupted Harvest 11k years ago now dominate Qajar."
- Dragon Turtle :
"The dragon turtle, a giant marine snapper found in the inland sea and estuarine habitats of the known world."
"By far the largest snapper is the dragon turtle Thalassochelys. Although quite derived in size and living in salt water, they are actually closer to common snappers than common snappers are to alligator snappers. These huge omnivores are found throughout the seagrass meadows."
We eat these where I live, usually in a stew. Funny to see the tables turn.
Jes!!!

Oh so that's where the Beast of Busco came from.

Great art in this one
Thanks man!
Loved this video! It's always great to see a clade that doesn't always get the spotlight given a chance to shine in Kaimere.
Also holy Haplocanthosaurus I was not expecting the Meadow Snapper to be that big lol! Giant saltwater snapping turtles would be terrifying in real life, surprised the Kentarim even risk it.
Great to see protostegids, and the Marine Snapper's design is just so unbelievably solid! I do have a few questions about this species in particular since I find it the most interesting out of any in this video:
1. What evolutionary pressures prompted a protostegid to develop a hard bony shell?
(if they end up being a different clade in later canon I guess that would explain it)
2. What animals does the marine snapper usually prey on? Protostegids' robust beaks have suggested they specialised in shelled prey, so perhaps this one could eat ammonites?
3. What are interactions between the marine snapper and the daikogen like? Would they fight? My money's on the daikogen scaring the snapper off due to its more advanced social structure
4. What are interactions between the marine snapper and Kaimerans like? Do some Khalin hunt them much like the Kentarim do with the dragon turtle?
Thank you!
1. Superior defenses would be the biggest one. From a brief chat I had with an expert, Protostegids had reduced bone supports but doesn't necessarily mean they had soft shells. It's plausible that they did, and certainly would have been more hydrodynamic at the cost of weaker defenses, but the bone bases may have been reduced to lose some weight and retained the hard keratin. Basically soft shell Archelon started when we thought they were related to Leatherbacks, and while it may be how they were built, it apparently isn't actually parsimonious so I defaulted to the basal condition. I might just make them a convergent clade that hasn't had time or pressure to take on the derived soft shell, which again would probably make them faster at the cost of some defenses. I personally find that avenue more interesting personally, but they're close enough that I thought it would make sense for Assembly naturalists to entertain the possibility of them being relict Protostegids.
2. Ammonites, slower fish, other sea turtles, opportunistic marine mammals, and what have you.
3. Daikogen are smaller, but being a lot more intelligent, agile, social, and aggressive does give them significant mobbing advantages. Wouldn't be an easy fight, and that beak could do some serious damage if it lands, but generally the elasmosaurs run them off.
4. Some khalin hunt them, but they are rare enough in the common waters of the known world that they aren't frequently encountered.
@@TalesofKaimere Thank you so much! This is all really cool information, the only stuff I could find on protostegid shells just said they were leathery and to just go with it, but this makes a lot of sense!
Can't wait for the Permian Islands, excited to see the thunder crocs in action!
@@thephilosoraptor8565 Yup! That was actually what prompted me to reach out to him lol. My deep dive always circled back to an academic 'trust me bro' so it was good to have it broken down like that. Doesn't mean they *didn't* have soft shells, and in fact there would be some benefits so it's not unreasonable speculation, but the fact that it is still speculative seems to have been lost in the chain.

Oh yeah, Perian Islands
Can't wait for more turtle power! Especially sea turtles!
Heard about Agate, I'M SO 😁 EXCITED. Even though im more of a pleistocene fan and wherever S. American weirdness lands I'm still hyped. Hope it makes it.
While not snappers and it's not even fully decided if they're turtle or tortoise, the Ironshells of the highland blade isles north of the main continent do share a ferocious bite with their distant cousins. With enough power to crush bones and rocks to get at carrion and gems.
With impressive armor that rival some ankylosaurs they have few predators and only the occasional dragon to fly up can threaten a healthy adult, however as uneven terrain doesn't appeal to the largest dragons as well as cool temperatures they live a life of peace.
Come near a hatchling and your dead though.
I’m also hella stoked for agate! Can’t wait to see it

@@TalesofKaimere You're welcome.
Okay Keenan, no more holding back, please tell us how you keep finding the music you use in your videos, there's no where part of your video making process is just finding good songs, are they songs that you just hear on a daily basis like a playlist or on the radio while your driving, please, I'm dying to know?
Thank you! So I've got a subscription to Epidemic Sounds, a platform that has tons of music available for use in videos like I've got. They have all sorts of filters, and while I've found a few artists like Deskant and Bonnie Grace who have tons of ideal instrumentals for my videos, sometimes I'll find new ones. This is the same one I used for the hippo episode, called Dead and Gone Blues, and I think I found it by looking up Louisiana blues and other keywords as a reference to, of all things, when the US Congress almost voted import hippos to fill out the lower Mississippi River. It's really a great platform and definitely worth the money!
@@TalesofKaimere okay I'll go check it out
couple questions: what other testudine groups are common in kaimere/ known world and how many of your creatures have you named after mythological beasts?
Unfortunately I can't answer either of these very comprehensively. So far these and the bogo (cousin of the leatherback sea turtle) are the only testudines I have set in the canon. I have lots of other ideas, but until I have an episode dedicated to the subject, I won't be able to finalize them. As for mythical beasts, I like to design animals first then see if the Assembly might reference mythic creatures later on, so I'm sure I'll add more down the road.
Watch out for your fingers, there's snappers in the water !!
6:05 and here comes the big boy

If dragon turtles encounter marine snappers, how do they interact?
Their encounters would be extremely rare but whichever individual is larger would probably have a go at the smaller
You meant legged armoured serpents right 🤨
Also only about 100 species sounds too low
Nope: armored serpents is the translation of snapping turtles in most Kaimeran languages, and indeed a lot of Earth languages. Not a literal description of snappers so much as a nod to how many people throughout history have described them.
100 species just in the known world. Probably closer to a few thousand accounting for all the realms. Continental US, which is around the size of the known world, has around 50 species, so I figured roughly double considering the diversity of habitats and continents of the known world made sense. May increase a bit if I find the diversity lacking if I ever get a full episode for all the turtles of the known world and do a total species census, but I imagine it will roughly add up to around a hundred.
@@TalesofKaimere the first one I meant as a joke 😂 😅
