Back in 2006 I bought a 3-door Polo like this one. Great car, kept it for 12 years. Much simpler than today's cars, easy to use and without any serious issues. ...and without a million different sensors.. 😅
This is the video I have been waiting for. I had a 2009 one of these in the same colour. Got it in mid 2021 as my first car with 35000 miles. Sold it last June with 56000 for a new Nissan Micra. Oh boy do I have regrets. This car was an absolute banger. Took it round Germany twice. Admittedly drove alittle fast while in Germany. But having a VW Polo was the pinicle of Sixth form for me and an absolutely amazing car and to whoever bought it after me. I hope she looks after you as well as she looked after me.
I have had my vw polo 1.2 2010 for 4 years since I passed my driving test. It’s on 98,000 now and still going strong. Regular services and well looked after. And I love it 💪
If you do 6k mile oil and filter changes and keep an eye on the level, you can feel free to ignore all the hate for the 1.2 CGPB and CGPA engines - they're a brilliant engine if you look after them, but sadly too many people follow the manufacturer oil change intervals (i.e. neglect them) and then blame the engine for problems.
The Valeting worked wonders on this car. The seats especially looked brand new, and the colour just popped out in this video. It really did transform the inside of the car. Well done to the guys at the Valeting shop👍 Hope the investment works out great for you, Matt👍
Used to have one of these when I was young with a famous 1.9 tdi engine. Perfectly reliable, kept it in the family and it clocked freaking 750.000 km before getting crashed into and written off.
we had a golf 4 station that did 650.000km and it was still going but since it was a golf 4 it was rusted out but we sold the engine and gearbox for 1250 euro and then the car it self went for another 750 so after buying it brand new and driving the hell out of it it still earned us 2k and we had it for like 13 years
Have a Polo 14tdi on a 04 plate, 110k on the clock, had it for 7 years, it meets my needs and service it every year, all filters and oil, any advisors always get sort, found it a good little car for me, been all over the country in it, just an honest bit of transport, had the same issues with the boot struts, made me laugh 😂
We had the same.....it was the best car we ever had. It was 2 years old when the wife had it, then it got passed around the kids as a first car. It drove and handled really good. We got rid at circa 140k and it was still on the road near 180k.....this was the era of reliable vw's.....not so much now. Just use good oil and filters and you wont go too far wrong.....
My wife bought a new one of these, red - 2003 - and drove it to 2010, 29k on the clock. Car was ok but the VW dealer tried to imply it needed new shock absorbers, just out of warranty and various other items coming in at £600. Took it to my garage. Just needed one spring and one fuse. Servicing done at my local garage from then on. It is still running somewhere. Not spectacular, but reliable - unlike the dealer.
I paid £800 for a 2 litre, 19yr old golf about 7 years ago. I drove that car the Scottish Highlands twice, Dover and everywhere in between, had a job doing heavy mileage every month. Very, very reliable car. Scrapped it for £350
I was given one of these 3 years ago. A 1.4tdi with 160k on the clock. It’s now done over 170k and just keeps going probably my most reliable car. It’s still on the original clutch too!
Really fantastic content as always Matt, the ‘I bought a’ videos are such an excellent, easy to watch, enjoyable format. Keep up the brilliant work. 👏👏
This model of the Polo is the best of the marque of that model. We have a 1.4 5 door Match that we have owned at least 7 years. Just over 100,000 miles. 1.4 petrol 16 valve. It’s ultra reliable and totally rust free. It lives outside all year round. I would have another one in a heartbeat.
I had a 1.2 8v for a couple years and was brilliant, exact same as the one in the video. Still going now on 120k miles. Had a Clio 197 since and a couple others, and has always been the most solid and reliable car ive ever owned
In 1991, £2500 bought me my second car, a six year old high spec 29000 mile Rover 213SE with full service history, a lovely plush little 4 door saloon. Nowadays, apparently, £2500 will only buy me a 16 year old base model 3 door 3 cylinder Polo with no service history. How times have changed.
I'm happy to see you've kept another basic (but good) car on the road, Matt. One day in the not-too-distant , when it's either an EV or the bus, we're going to regret not holding on to cheap-to-run petrol or diesel cars.
I’ve got this car we got in second hand in 2012 and now I drive it when I passed my test last year, 70,000 miles and nothing wrong with it!!! Good cars, it was my mums then my dads now mine
This car in this condition with 60k miles could easily fetch £2500-£3000 in today's current market.. surprised you listed it so low Matt? Great video the 9n and 9n3 Polo are great cars still see plenty of them knocking about on the roads
YOUR A PROPER LEGEND MATT i knew youd do more than you should have .. on this one .. but you don't sell CRAP.. we all appreciate that . GREAT CONTENT as usual . Buddy
Just bought a 2005 polo 1.2SE 80k miles (mint condition for age) for 900£, one elderly owner from new. Full service every year at local garage, 11 month mot (1 advisory leaking exhaust) Spent 80£ on new exhaust flexi. Let’s see how long she lasts. Put 600 miles on it in 3 weeks so far so good
I had a 2005 1.4 Polo as my second car (First car, a 1.2 Punto blew a gearbox the same day I accepted a job an hour away). Bought on 156k miles, sold on 182k and the only fault was the 13 year old VW original battery finally failing. Most reliable car I have ever owned
I had one years ago 06 plate in 2006 to 2010, then one about 8 years ago had another one they are ok in a straight line around a corner they are a brick on wheels, got a fiesta far better to drive or a clio.
Another great video from you Matt, and I can safely say that you're time and efforts have been extremely well paid off. Before I started to write this comment, I went onto the car and classic website and typed Volkswagen Polo into the search box, and the results were Polo's from 1984, 1985, 1990 plus, and to top it all off, a 1979 Polo. All for sale in the UK. That means if well looked after, there is another twenty plus years out of the Polo you bought. Someone could buy it as a first car, get married, and decide that instead of getting another car, they might want a small car that they can use for work. A sister of mine has the last of these Polo's, 2009, and she wants to keep it for as long as she can and I have told her that if she looks after it, she'll get another twenty plus years out of it. Finally, a friend of mine had a 2001 Polo, one of the previous ones to these, that was out from around 1996. It was a 1.9 diesel, and she had no bother using it to tow a horse box
A eBay universal remote lock/unlock kit for 20 quid takes about 20 mins to fit on that car. It’ll clean up nice and first time drivers can do a lot worse than a 60k polo with air con. You could always send it to Ireland where it’s immediately worth double the UK price.
I had one of these on a 55 plate, a 3-cylinder 1.2 petrol like yours and it was one of the most reliable cars I ever had. I sold it with almost 120,000 on the clock, and it never gave me any real trouble other than consumables. I think the key to these is to get one that's been looked after. Any neglect and they quickly become fragile. Mine was one previous owner, garaged and with a full and regular service history.
Had a 2010 polo, mk5 as a first car, I loved it..sold it in 2018 with 56k on it, now has over 130k 😯 glad to see its still going. I now drive a mk7 golf gti
I bought my Cat N 2002 Polo 1.2 for £900 on 28K miles, engine management light occasionally rearing its head. 3 years, a front anti roll bar (weak collars originally but there’s a revised design now), track rod end, three ignition coils and a lambda sensor later (fixed the engine management light!) and still going strong 40K miles later, not sure I could ever let it go
7 years ago I bought my Polo from 08, 6 speed auto, petrol, climatic, cruice control, 3 door with 46.500 miles. Now has 127k on it. Stil no issues. 1.4 BUD engine. No oil consumption. I wil keep it as long as it functions properly.
Flipping heck matt what on earth are them head rest in your car 😖 not the best looking head rest in the world look bit daft or should I say they look like rolled up sleeping bags some of the most silly headrest I have ever seen sorry mate
My previous car was a black VW Polo, almost the exact same as this one…and, when I did the part exchange for my present car…the dealership gave the price as £800… It was also, my first ever car… The only difference was mine was a 2005 model… Watching this brought back many fond memories…
We have one of these as a little run around second car. Can't fault them. its 06 we have had it for 4 years now and apart from a break switch, some new tyres and annual service its cost us next to nothing over that time.
Can’t wait to watch! Funny, I’ve just bought a CHEAP SEAT IBIZA FOR £400 tonight, bit older but only 72k. I don’t plan to massively overspend but then again Matt you’ve taught me all I know 😂😂
Another great video matt and a certain sale with that one at the asking price as it will serve the next owners well and after 3 years will still get a grand back for it if kept maintained and from fitting number plates to boot struts your talent knows no bounds look forward to the next video 👍
Front brake discs ... the favourite money spinner of every garage mechanic !! .. Lost count of the times I've ignored replacing discs because they were " 50% worn" ie they still have 10's of thousands of miles left in them !
I hsve one of these a 2009 1.2 Match on 69k miles . The match was actually a mid spec model it had everything that was an option on lesser models as standard but for some reason doesnt have remote locking 😂weird VW 🤷🏽♂️. The cupholders as well are common to get stuck too. And that phone holder is as you said a genuine VW option its very rare and only came on the 08 and 09 models. Mine has been completely reliable my mum has had it for 12 years and its never put a foot wrong. Only regular servicing has needed to be done. It is needing some servicing now but it shouldn't be too bad just needs brakes and a alternator belt
This one actually looks nice. They had quite nice design, I mean they looked sleak and neat back in the day when compared to Nissan Micra or Toyota Yaris. The 1.9 was more than enough for a small car and they were really durable, able to handle highway driving and had decent MPG. Many of those small hatchbacks were run to the ground by owners who kept them barely able to pass MOT as cheap as possible. Always nice to see a decent one like this. The fact it doesn´t have 10 different extras like adaptive cruise, cameras etc makes it more affordable for a young driver (ie. if there is need to repair a bumper).
I had one about 5-6 years ago 1.4 tdi with 90k. Had no history but was a clean car and ran great never any issues apart from fuel cap breaking off and heater resister switch
I had one of these as first car but with the 1.2 engine, poverty spec (no AC or electric windows). I had it for 8 years and the only thing I ever had to change was the tyres and brake pads and I ragged it as a naive 17 year old. I serviced it every year and it never let me down.
My dad drove VW's from the late 1960's up to a couple of years before he died in 2018. I don't think that he ever had any major issues. The worst thing about that Polo is the radio station!
We had one of these as a 5 door, bought for the kids once they passed their tests, was a lovely one lady owner car, sadly didn't stay that way for long !
Interesting you say they aren't good engines. In 2018 I bought an identical one (9n3 Match) with the 1.2 engine for £1800, it randomly wouldn't start and upon a Google I read comments about the chain slipping. Took it to WBAC and they gave me £2000 for it - win!
Am I the only one waiting for the "hello welcome baack"? And then saying it with Matt? Not to make you paranoid the next time you say it Matt, just know we love your videos👍🏻👍🏻
This channel, the few I look forward to watching every day, should have more subscribers than it does now. So, people, let’s get this channel over 1 million asap!
I just bought a 2010 Skoda Roomster 1.2tsi 120k 1 owner fuel service history with bills new timing chain last year 10 months MOT £800 has been a very useful car with tip runs dog car but would be a little rough for retail
I drove one of these recently (similarly low spec, except with steel wheels, with the 3 cylinder petrol) and it was a joy to drive, which surprised me as I’m not usually keen on Volkswagens
Little cars at that price always sell well, ok there might not be a lot of profit in it and the risk of it coming back and wiping it all out with a silly fault will always be there. But, they can always pull in a new customer and if it turns out to be a smashing little car for them they could well be back next time when they need another car, you might get a chance to make a bit more out of them on the next one. Customer base, customer base, customer base.
This era of engine, I’ve flipped a few of these, can’t go wrong with a polo. However, the engines BBZ BKY etc are all disaster prone for piston slap, headgaskets, coil packs etc. they are really reliable until about 70k miles. What’s new? Lol. I’ve literally just done a headgasket and top end rebuild on an 03 polo, no reason why it can’t do another 70k. Keep em comin Matt!
I have a BBY engine on my 04 ibiza with 90k miles, they all seem to have coil pack issues as it was a early design flaw, bought a couple new coil packs a while ago and no problems since. Regarding the piston slap it seems to be ubiquitous for these engines but it doesn't seem to cause any problems other than a weird sound. Other than that the engine hasn't had too many problems, i changed the timing belt recently and the oil consumption is roughly 1litre/5000 miles so not too bad, i change oil/filter every 5000 miles or so hopefully the engine doesn't blow up any time soon.
@@aden3113 eventually the piston slap gets so bad it starts getting past the piston rings then it’s game over. But I have seen these engines on over 130,000 miles.
matt, youve saved a car, someone will love it .its low mileage. AND be grateful for a bit of profit these days. some people have to work 6 days for that?
Cool. The first car I bought brand new was a Polo 2002, TDI. I got it with 5 doors, sport seats and Climatronic. It was one of the first cars of that generation, and it had a lot of issues. The turbo blew up after 450 kilometers, and ownership over 3 yeas sent me to the dealerhip about one a month. Also, my frenchie got sick in the back seat at one point. It took me ages to clean. However, after I sold it, it soldierd on for many years and made it to over 300 000 kilometers before it died.
Owned a 2006 Polo 1.2 S for a few months. It had 57,000 miles on it, but it no service history, and the 55 horsepower 1.2-litre engine. It was a bit of a lemon, but it got me from A to B okay.
This brings back memories of visiting my mate at uni in my then, fairly new (later shape than this) Polo. Pretty girl comes up to the car, "are you a dealer?". I was unaware of this stereotype until the video!
Close to home this one - A 2008 Polo Mk4 9N3 was my first car and the 1.2 engine was riddled with issues but I couldn't help but try and keep it on the road for as long as I did
Polo came out well im sure it will soon be some youths pride and joy. Love a cheap car video you never know which way they end keep the videos coming so entertaining
These are great 1st cars but they can leak like a colander. Daughter has 4 door 2008 variant. Leaks to the front passenger footwell (from who knows where - not scuttle and doesn't have sunroof) and leaks to rear nearside footwell which could be door card. Other common fault is rear door central locking not working. Nice vid though, pity we don't have this one :/
I like this shape Polo. Not a fan of the 3 cylinder, my sister had a pre face-lift and it was gutless. I sourced my mother a 1 month old face-lift 2006 FSI Sport in Grey. She had it over 3 years and it was faultless, comfortable, good stereo and looked great. Sadly it met an early end as I saw photos of it a couple of years later in a breakers yard with the engine not looking too great...
I got one from stockport in 2010, 2006 1.4 SE for my now wife. That was a smith knight faye trade in, a car supermarket not far from the M60 and Tescos? Paid £4k for it, ran it 2.5 years and traded it in for a 2 yr old Mk6 Golf GT TDI, got £3600 for it, in the 2 years we had it it needed 2 front drop links. Problem with it was poor fuel economy and high tax bracket for what it was. Her current Touareg V6 TDI R line has cheaper tax and better economy than that little Polo ever did! Older 1998 one we traded for it was so much better.
I was offered a pretty fooked A clas as a company car but ended up with a 1.0 VW POLIO that had the life kicked out of it with close to 80k up in 2005 whenit was a 2000 car. Sounded just the same, always a Fredo,Fudge or tiny bag of Haribo from going bang but it never died!
We have a 2006 9N3 1.2 3 cylinder Polo it was fine for 65,000 miles and 10 years until oil spurted out of the cracked head onto the hot manifold and went to fire.
I've had one of these for nearly 4 years. Not a bad little car for a first car. I don't go that far in it and it's had a bit of work done over the years, but it gets me where I need to go and I definitely could have done worse.
I paid £1500 for my 3 door ‘07 1.4 tdi 8 years ago, 152k on the clock now and still going strong, it’s never let me down. It’s not worth anything but I’m quite attached to it. 17 service stamps and a National Trust sticker 🤓 Maybe I’ll give you a shout if I ever part with it…
My new !, 4 cylinder Polo engine rattled on startup V W main dealership in the Midlands didn’t want to know 😢 . Never recommend V W , too many stories like my experience.
Well done again Matt, this kind of car, or one similar would be my daughters ideal first car, she will be learning to drive this time next year and i will definatley be up for a visit to your garage 👍
I am about to replace my old Leon TDI FR. Had it about 10yrs or so and now north of 200k. I have only cleaned the interior about 3 or 4 times in all that time. The exterior even less. I would love to see Matt's face if he ever set eyes on it. I don't think he would cope. Dusty ole sod is Sergio the Seat. An asthmatic's nightmare.
Just for your information any contamination in brake fluid is a straight up fail because brake fluid isn't isn't compressible but if it has water in the fluid the water is giving a very spongy pedal feel or brake lever on a motorcycles.
My grandparents actually have a Polo 9N, 2005 (pre-facelift, also bought from new) 5 doors, 1.4L petrol auto, twist trim level, in silver, only has like nearly 40k miles on the clock lol
Son's car is identical apart from being 5 door, also on a Manchester plate and from the same dealer. Does have remote locking but his doesn't work. It did come with the remote key though (the only one), the other one would have been a basic key like you have..

Those Tiptronic gearboxes are very reliable if not the most economical
Seems a lot quieter, you didnt mention the fix for the grumbly engine? Keep up the good work Matt, I'd love to do what you do and rescue sorry cars
Flipping heck matt what on earth are them head rest in your car 😖 not the best looking head rest in the world look bit daft or should I say they look like rolled up sleeping bags some of the most silly headrest I have ever seen sorry mate
Its a range rover u peasant. Its a nice luzurious and comfy head rest.
@johnplatt8369 what on earth does that have to do with the fella asking about the engine?
My previous car was a black VW Polo, almost the exact same as this one…and, when I did the part exchange for my present car…the dealership gave the price as £800…
It was also, my first ever car…
The only difference was mine was a 2005 model…
Watching this brought back many fond memories…
We have one of these as a little run around second car. Can't fault them. its 06 we have had it for 4 years now and apart from a break switch, some new tyres and annual service its cost us next to nothing over that time.
Can’t wait to watch!
Funny, I’ve just bought a CHEAP SEAT IBIZA FOR £400 tonight, bit older but only 72k. I don’t plan to massively overspend but then again Matt you’ve taught me all I know 😂😂
Watching with a lot of zeal & ambition.
Car flipping is really an interesting profession, you sir have made it a passion for me. Thank you.🙏
I had a 2002 vw polo 1.4 tdi 3 cylinder diesel as my first car. Was a nippy car remapped from 75bhp to 100bhp.. good power for a first car
this was my first car. In silver and 2006. Great first car. Many great memories
You can,t beat a nice cheap and cheerful little motor.Like you said an ideal first car.Well done another older car saved.
The transformation in the seats alone is... amazing!
Thanks
I don't understand why folk don't clean their cars prior to selling them.
Owned one of these and sold it at 70k with very similar problems to this one. A decent little runner but wouldn’t recommend it past that.
Wonder Grip van been Nicked?
Polo scrub up well in/our.
This brings back memories of visiting my mate at uni in my then, fairly new (later shape than this) Polo. Pretty girl comes up to the car, "are you a dealer?". I was unaware of this stereotype until the video!
Close to home this one - A 2008 Polo Mk4 9N3 was my first car and the 1.2 engine was riddled with issues but I couldn't help but try and keep it on the road for as long as I did
Good to see you saved yourself a few hundred by fitting the boot struts. Nice work
A fresh screw and then a good buff works wonders !!!!
Polo = Pants Off Legs Open ...a new screw 😂😂😂
😂😂😂😂@@keithleivers4061
I need a Jimmy the magician in the midlands all that work for £275 that’s a steal
Polo came out well im sure it will soon be some youths pride and joy. Love a cheap car video you never know which way they end keep the videos coming so entertaining
Someone will have a tidy, well sorted first car due to your generosity….❤
Anyone remember the ford keys that had the little light bulb on them to locate the keyhole, my dad’s sierras had them..?
Literally addicted to these videos, you are living my dream Matt 😄
I have said it before, but I think Jimmy the magician could be the very man to make my E46 m sport coupe pretty for the summer
Going to buy one tomorrow with just 56k on the clock, full service history, 1 owner from new and zero advisories on MOT. £1250.
My mum has one which I learnt to drive in seeing this was a nostalgia trip
Love it.. back to normal service ... massively over spending... missed this content Matt. Awesome 👌
First number plates, then boot struts, you’ll be doing the discs and pads yourself next 😂
You may massively over spend but you put out decent cars . Keep up the good work great entertainment 👍🏻
I've had one of these for nearly 4 years. Not a bad little car for a first car. I don't go that far in it and it's had a bit of work done over the years, but it gets me where I need to go and I definitely could have done worse.
Profit time and it wasn't painful repair Matt . Excellent value in MINT polo condition 👌
Well Matt, I would totally buy that Polo from ya and make sure you received a profit! 60,000 miles and looking that awesome, I would jump in a second!
Glad to see you resurrect the old one's Matt ,it will do someone a turn.
Well done again Matt, this kind of car, or one similar would be my daughters ideal first car, she will be learning to drive this time next year and i will definatley be up for a visit to your garage 👍
I was cleaning my subscriptions on RUclips, couldn't get rid of you, yours videos are getting better and better...cheers🍻
Good to hear
@@HighPeakAutos i know,I am wired differently,like you😅
I am about to replace my old Leon TDI FR.
Also a contact lens/glasses wearer and saving for LASIK too. Planning to do it in South Africa when we visit
Son's car is identical apart from being 5 door, also on a Manchester plate and from the same dealer. Does have remote locking but his doesn't work. It did come with the remote key though (the only one), the other one would have been a basic key like you have..
