I have been a passenger in one of them lupos ( same colour too) when we had absolutely insane snow , double decker buses where sliding everywhere 4x4s where sitting at the side of the road! Our little trooper of a lupo just drove on and on and got us home !
9/10 chances you got home credit to the driver rather than the little Lupo. However, great little cars for "A to B" with enough capacity considering its size.

my Polish mate bought 2001 Seat Arosa (twin brother of this VW Lupo) when he arrived in the UK back in 2015. It was a great laugh when he selected reverse instead of 1st at the set of traffic lights (not used to RHD). We called it ''THE WILDBOAR'' because of the fun we had on flooded country roads around South Wales.
A VW enthusiast will be quite keen to take this on. All the items which need work are easy to do and critically the car isn't rusty. How about contacting the person who bought the low mileage Golf you had a few months ago ?
Lupo was my moms first car, and i remember my young self and my twin sitting in the back with candy while she drove us trough Belgrade and blasted 90s Serbian music. Very happy and dear memories. Thanks for sharing with us that small but powerful car 🥹

I've had my 99' Lupo for about six months now and I love it. It's small enough to fit into the tight spots, yet it's still roomy enough on the inside. Also handles like a beaut.

I’m quite upto date with the lupo scene. These cars are slowly going up in value. What reason I don’t know, but you’ve done quite well at £500. The alloy wheels are lupo sport wheels. The automatic box is a little less desirable but definitely appeals to the specific kind. They’re common for rotting on the arches, rear pop out windows was an optional extra also. Electric windows was an option too.
It’s an S spec so comes with electric front windows, rear pop-out windows and central locking. The alloy wheels were an option. Also for your (and my) OCD the rear mats are in the wrong footwells and the tray in the spare wheel is upside down. We have had 5 Lupo’s in my family and still have a TDI which I bought in 2007 so I know them well. I hope someone saves it as it doesn’t look rusty at all!

It had a smooth wide body kit, bucket seats, BBS wheels and coilover suspension. Felt like such a boy racer with all my customised kit, pity it only had 50bhp!
Couple of weeks ago in the Smith 'n Sniff podcast they also asked when you last saw a Lupo. I kept an eye on it, and the answer is; more than once a week. They obviously are still around here in the Netherlands.
Yeah here in the Netherlands we love to keep small old cars on the road, I guess it’s our frugality. So many old Lupos, Polos, Corsas, Fiestas and others are still driving along happily here
@@timschellekens7967old Polos Corsas and fiestas are still very common here in the UK but lupos? Not so much. I see Polos (including mine😂) and fiestas from late 90s early and late 2000s and Corsas from early and late 2000s every day. Lupos? Maybe one a month 😂
i just got one for myself, as my first ever car, I paid 700 pounds for mine, a little cutr silver nugget, driving, and starting every time, all I need to do is some minor fixes for it to become road legal, its also low milage about 200,000km im already in love with it
My Mum has a 2004 Lupo which has done about 43k miles - it's still a good car to drive and aside from a boot which is tricky to open it's fine - she's the only owner ever
I love when people keep their cars clean. I just bought a new car. When I deliver my old car to the dealership it'll be clean. Many people will say that I'm a idiot. However I see it as respect for the dealership, from who I demand respect.
From that report it all looks like a decent home mechanic could handle it. Being a romantic but this is a great project car for a parent / child team to get a child’s first car up and running. Hope it sells as such
About 10 years ago, I found the seat version of the lupo called an Arosa in the same spec as that yellow one. 1.4 auto in silver as my then gf needed a small auto. It was very cheap to buy even then and drove like a much bigger car as it was a solid wee thing. Never had any issues other the electric window switches not working like that yellow one. But no oil leaks or gear box leaks etc. She had it for a while and sold it onto a family member when she was finished with it.
Save it! Only thing that sounds potentially expensive is the gearbox - it may only need a new sump pan and gaskets? Thats a £2k car retail surely - you could always raffleshack it. I recently spent 12 x what you paid for that lupo on buying my own lupo, allbeit a GTI low miler, and even that has the window switch issue. New one isnt lots and can be a diy job. Now theres an idea for a video, you doing some of the fixes on it!
Many, many years ago I had an automatic VW Variant (estate) in that yellow, I believe it's called Texas Yellow. It had room under the bonnet for luggage, and the engine under the rear cargo area, so loads of room in the back !
Glad to hear you are becoming a fan of VAG after your slightly sniffy review of the Polo. You like Audis, Bentley, SEAT, Schooda (aka Skoda)...and now you are impressed with an old Lupo (well at first at least). Welcome friend. One of us! 😊
My son had one of these - huge fun but I virtually rebuilt it to keep it on the road over 4 years. I am amazed that your mechanic didn't mention corrosion as well 😂
That 1,4 mpi is bulletproof engine. In my town there are many golf 5 + with lpg conversion as a taxies, and they got 700-800K KM without any major issues. Yes it is slow, but it is very reliable engine.
I drive past a Lupo GTI everyday..... wanted one since they were new. Ex- had a 1.4, such a fun car to drive and still comfortable for 6' 1" of me to drive.
a lupo had been my dream car for ages and ages (bare in mind i’m 19 so don’t have too big dreams hahah) and i finally got one in August, unfortunately not banana yellow but the beautiful light blue. it is a shame to see these coming off the roads, i get all giddy when i see a fellow lupo on the roads so i really do hope someone takes this up as a project! but if not may it provide spares to all the lupo lovers up and down the nation 😂 mine’s 2003 with 89,000 miles and no advisories, has had issues with the exhaust in the past though so it must be common 😬
I had a Lupo 1.7sdi for my 3rd first car😂 and honestly I must’ve done 20k on it, mostly at full throttle because it was gutless. It was unbelievably economical even at max speed which wasn’t 3 digits. Had windy windows, tape deck, CD player. Always started even way below 0° and never let me down. It was on 260k, and it’s 4th timing belt when I sold it for £250 after crashing it into a farmers field! Those were the days.
I bought a same model lupo for 700€ in Kosovo, 1.6 diesel manual with no ac and pretty basic, gave it to my cousin for 4 months still sold it for 1.500€ after doing a service, technical check for the next insured owner (basically MOT) and changed a light bulb at the back It was faulty but the buyer knew
Matt, don’t knock those yellow glasses. Get some good ones, I was a class 1 HGV,and truly if you get proper yellow driving glasses the difference when fog and mist is amazing, and believe me, if we class one can get a extra twenty yards of stopping distance it is well worth it.
A retired driver would love this little motor and would probably happily pay for all the work to bring it back to show room condition to give a few more years. Why? - auto, cute, and with knobs on (i.e. no blasted touch screen to confuse the heck out of me (erm them)) and, best of all, they could fetch their collection of Christmas cassette tapes out of the loft!
Hi Matt, usually just before you go through the possible repair costs you say "Let`s park somewhere scenic and go through the cost shall we" !!!! I take it on this occasion you thought bugger it, I can`t be bothered today I need to post a letter and here will do 😊😊😊😊
I bought the vw rear mud flaps as soon as i got mine. They are shaped and look pretty good, and essential if you drive on muddy or salty roads cause the far back rear wheels and near vertical rear window make it a magnet for sludge
My late father had one of these as a courtesy from Seat in Hyde. He was a big bloke and an ex bus driver, but he loved it. It was my mother who stopped him from getting one; she wasn’t a fan of the salmon pink! They both agreed that one of its biggest assets was that it left the bins free when parked on the drive, quickly followed by the room it left for the milkman.
It’s a shame about that. Sell it spares or repair £500 at it’ll go easy. I bought one over your way for my daughter to learn to drive in,it was the same colour but a 1.0 manual . It was brilliant and she loved it .
This is the same power train as our 02 Fabia Mk1 1.4 Automatic was. It cost a lot to tax as you've found out. It drank fuel as well, and used a fair bit of oil. Otherwise it was quite a nice car. We scrapped it four years ago.
Oh man i miss that car. My mum had an 99 Lupo bright fireengine red with black cats from 2000 till 2017. I miss that car even for its only 1 litre engine. Going uphill was fun. And that lupo was the bottom of the line manual, no central locking and not electric windows.
Through the Rose tinted glasses...., yes a good project car where someone can sort parts and repairs at cost. Least with a timing belt, the 1 tooth out issue could be sorted without a engine rebuild. Should last another 5 or 10 years if looked after.
Fascinating to see this car .. because I think I’ve seen it before! Back in 99 I had red manual 1.4S Lupo which I thought was ace Moving on to January 2002 I bought a brand new Golf GTI from Sheppards Volkswagen in Bishops Stortford Parked next to it when I picked it up was a brand new yellow auto Lupo 1.4 I remember we’ll discussing it with the salesman at the time I collected my Golf saying how I’d enjoyed my lupo The reg of the Golf was EN51THU and all the new cars there were EN51 Probably the same car
I had a 1.4 lupo sport 100bhp for my first car! Wasnt many about then never mind now! had the exhaust in the middle from factory! Class little motor unfortunately i wrapped it in to a roundabout pulling a handbreak turn 😂
You can easily sell it for 1000 as a "project car". It is automatic and ULEZ-compliant. Somebody with straight hands can easily replace the cambelt, power steering pump, exhaust and oil leaks.
So many times I have thought you should create a little museum corner with all the crap that you have found in cars... The yellow shades would be a star attraction.
I too went down with pink eye, after finding a pair of knickers in a nova and putting them on in 1999.i miss those knickers.out lived the car by 6 years
This is trouble with not watching till the end before commenting...shame it just looks superficially like a nice car....ideal for student or recently passed test at £1500...
I love when u say about the pillows lol £5 they must be crap ones as mine cost me £50 latex pillows would not buy nothing else one you try latex u don't go back. Great video how the light on is something not too expensive and the epc light sad it's going to cost much to do up
I have a 2005 1 litre Lupo, with manual gearbox and wind-up windows, and have done just under 43 k miles, being the only owner from new. Apart from a collision with a rock on the road which necessitated a new front sub frame, the only major wear fault was replacement of the corroded power steering line from the pump about 2 years ago. The exhaust emission light is now showing there may be a potential problem, but it continues to run well and the bodywork is in sound condition. Before this, I had two Polos (not at the same time). I've heard that the UP! model is being discontinued at the end of 2023. Does the name come from the middle two letters of Lupo?
I have been a passenger in one of them lupos ( same colour too) when we had absolutely insane snow , double decker buses where sliding everywhere 4x4s where sitting at the side of the road! Our little trooper of a lupo just drove on and on and got us home !

This was my dream car when I was about 10 back in the early 2000’s. Was obsessed!
i just got one for myself, as my first ever car, I paid 700 pounds for mine, a little cutr silver nugget, driving, and starting every time, all I need to do is some minor fixes for it to become road legal, its also low milage about 200,000km im already in love with it
My Mum has a 2004 Lupo which has done about 43k miles - it's still a good car to drive and aside from a boot which is tricky to open it's fine - she's the only owner ever
That is the best mechanics report that you have ever done. Brilliant. I feel sorry for the Lupo, but great as a "Do'er upper". 💯
I love when people keep their cars clean. I just bought a new car. When I deliver my old car to the dealership it'll be clean. Many people will say that I'm a idiot. However I see it as respect for the dealership, from who I demand respect.
Awesome. A friend of mine had a Lupo 3L TDI years ago. Really liked it.
Last time I saw one of these I was in it. It was a 1.4 three cylinder TDi. It was great to drive!
A VW Lupo was my first car (in yellow!) and I LOVED it. It served me well for a long time. Excellent little car!
Good to hear!
I had a 1999 Lupo and had it for 5 years and 80,000 miles. Great solid, reliable car…
One of us! 😊
My wife had one of these for years in green !!! Very reliable, she did over 100k miles in it !!
My son had one of these - huge fun but I virtually rebuilt it to keep it on the road over 4 years. I am amazed that your mechanic didn't mention corrosion as well 😂
Rag under the bonnet for checking the oil, always a good sign 👌
....or a sign that the oil needs constant checking....
@@jerrydonnan8665 at least there checking it
😅@@johnmackay5784
That 1,4 mpi is bulletproof engine. In my town there are many golf 5 + with lpg conversion as a taxies, and they got 700-800K KM without any major issues. Yes it is slow, but it is very reliable engine.
I drive past a Lupo GTI everyday..... wanted one since they were new. Ex- had a 1.4, such a fun car to drive and still comfortable for 6' 1" of me to drive.
Got a lupo GTI here in Canada
We appreciate the things you do for our entertainment ☺️, all the way from South Africa 🇿🇦
a lupo had been my dream car for ages and ages (bare in mind i’m 19 so don’t have too big dreams hahah) and i finally got one in August, unfortunately not banana yellow but the beautiful light blue. it is a shame to see these coming off the roads, i get all giddy when i see a fellow lupo on the roads so i really do hope someone takes this up as a project! but if not may it provide spares to all the lupo lovers up and down the nation 😂
mine’s 2003 with 89,000 miles and no advisories, has had issues with the exhaust in the past though so it must be common 😬
I bought a same model lupo for 700€ in Kosovo, 1.6 diesel manual with no ac and pretty basic, gave it to my cousin for 4 months still sold it for 1.500€ after doing a service, technical check for the next insured owner (basically MOT) and changed a light bulb at the back
It was faulty but the buyer knew
I take it on this occasion you thought bugger it, I can`t be bothered today I need to post a letter and here will do 😊😊😊😊
Wow some useful buying tips there Matt, "you don't want a semi nor a squidgy back end".......... Pearls of wisdom 😛🙃!!!
I bought the vw rear mud flaps as soon as i got mine. They are shaped and look pretty good, and essential if you drive on muddy or salty roads cause the far back rear wheels and near vertical rear window make it a magnet for sludge
The Lupo was a great little car but rust has finished most of them. That one is a great colour
I have a Gti one,i have it for 15 years,i love it,its so much fun
It’s a shame about that. Sell it spares or repair £500 at it’ll go easy. I bought one over your way for my daughter to learn to drive in,it was the same colour but a 1.0 manual . It was brilliant and she loved it .
Yellow glasses 😂😂 I like how you have a laugh whilst recording!😂
Back in 99 I had red manual 1.4S Lupo which I thought was ace
Moving on to January 2002 I bought a brand new Golf GTI from Sheppards Volkswagen in Bishops Stortford
Parked next to it when I picked it up was a brand new yellow auto Lupo 1.4
I remember we’ll discussing it with the salesman at the time I collected my Golf saying how I’d enjoyed my lupo
The reg of the Golf was EN51THU and all the new cars there were EN51
Probably the same car
Cool little things! Already sent two to the states this year. Getting some worldwide demand for these now. Cult following and guaranteed classic.
maybe buy this one and do Matt a favour?
@@mariataif this guy buys too many lemons I ain't helping him out🤣he needs to learn ahhahah.
wife had a 1.4 s about 20 years ago, great little car, apart from the colour , fantasia green, or' Hi vis ' green as i called it ''''lol
I had a 1.4 lupo sport 100bhp for my first car! Wasnt many about then never mind now! had the exhaust in the middle from factory! Class little motor unfortunately i wrapped it in to a roundabout pulling a handbreak turn 😂
Thankyou very much for an excellent video. I was a bit grumpy but your view with yellow sunglasses cheered me right up, you are a star!
Good to see the old l322 is getting some camera time and running well Mat
You can easily sell it for 1000 as a "project car". It is automatic and ULEZ-compliant. Somebody with straight hands can easily replace the cambelt, power steering pump, exhaust and oil leaks.
So many times I have thought you should create a little museum corner with all the crap that you have found in cars... The yellow shades would be a star attraction.
I too went down with pink eye, after finding a pair of knickers in a nova and putting them on in 1999.i miss those knickers.out lived the car by 6 years
How nice to see a clean car in part exchange shows it’s been loved
This is trouble with not watching till the end before commenting...shame it just looks superficially like a nice car....ideal for student or recently passed test at £1500...
I think the phrase you were looking for is 'cattle trucked'...... Love the Lupo TDi Sport, had two of them back in the day.....
I love when u say about the pillows lol £5 they must be crap ones as mine cost me £50 latex pillows would not buy nothing else one you try latex u don't go back. Great video how the light on is something not too expensive and the epc light sad it's going to cost much to do up
I just knew when you panned the headlights into view…. ‘headlights could do with a buff’ 😎
Where are you getting your pillows from, Stockport Market ?
