Always amused how getting a mini-valet is always your number one task, even when there's a good chance your mechanic will give it a terminal notice.
A clean car is nicer to be in
I paid 400 for mine no mot 2.5 diesel manual, its rear wheel drive and the tyre would spin easy loads of power good off road ,sold it for 1400 euro loved it and mine had the death wobble some problem on the steering rack ,diesel motors are the best loud dirty and simple from this era will do moon miles too
I sell all my cars for spares or repair so i never clean them the more problems they have the cheaper i pay ,my customers don't care mostnof them are only buying for the motor or gearbox or both
A lot of things respond to a good buff 😉
@@mariemccann5895 priorities people 🤣
Had one of these in the garage today for a front propshaft, the customer said the car likes to lock itself but instead of getting it fixed he taped the spare key inside the filler cap.
Probably hoping to get it stolen for the insurance :)
haha classy
Does he leave it running?
im always nervous of losing my key so pretty much the last ten years ive left my car open with the key on the ashtray :) i have no reason to fib, its what i do every day haha
@@leenevin8451Yup, with a goat guard & plastic steering lock.
Another great video. I really enjoy the cheaper cars. I honestly think the reason Top Gear has failed is its obsession with £100k plus cars.
Totally agree. I lost interest in cars like that. It’s probably interesting if you’re eleven years old and like shiny things
Pal, Top Gear failed because all the presenters have been crap!
Top Gear is rubbish, but Fifth Gear is better!
Hope Matt gets a TV show. It would be hilarious!
I think the reason Top Gear failed post Clarkson was because , ironically they focused on cars , whereas a lot of folk who watched it had no interest in cars but enjoyed watching three blokes dicking about.
Put the 26 pence towards the number plate bulb.
I drive one of these on a daily basis in Mozambique.
The engine is 2.8 Diesel, not 2.7.
I also have that annoying red light on the lower left corner of the dash. Apparently, it’s related to the anti-theft system (still unsolved, I’m just living with it).
I could do better in terms of car, but for my current “life situation”, it’s serving me well.
Ah very good. Yes you’re right, it’s the 2.8. I was confusing this with the 2.7 grand Cherokee engine
Me and a mate bought a 1979 Cortina 2.3 Estate car for £80 years ago. It was still taxed and MOT'd for a few months but an absolute heap, drove like a haunted shithouse! We took it a relatives farm estate and had a blast hammering up and down some private roads.
You have to off road it Matt, it'd be rude not to!
"drove like a haunted shithouse" Now there's a mental image!
It would make an ideal farm off road workhorse as its not fit for the road with the dismal MOT result. Has towbar (if you've not sold it already lol!) for a trailer. I think that's its future.
Totally agree - donate to farmer Joe to get around the pastures!
Maybe do a video with your mechanic where he points out all the bad stuff underneath the car, and tells us exactly what would be required, and how much it might cost ( if he's camera shy, I'm sure another mechanic / body shop would oblige ... )
I'd like to see the High Peak crew, your mechanic, bodyshop guy, your upholsterer, wheel restorer, valeters etc It would make for a potential tv series 😀
Well it sounds like his mechanic isn't a he but yes, I agree
Wheeler dealers 2.0.
Would love to see it though.
Great idea 💡
Loving the buying cheap series, watched for a while, and your commentary/humour keeps it entertaining (even though it would be fun to watch either way) . I would probably give it to someone who owns a farm or something of the sort you know, just so they can keep it to drive around the land on, so that it still gets the life it deserves as a workhorse or something until its completely dead, off-road.
You are the best car youtuber I have ever seen keep up the great work ❤❤
@jeremybrown9179 Yet here you are watching this Jeremy. 🙄
There are other car reviewers on RUclips and Jayemm is also a good channel, but no one identifies what’s wrong with a used car, what you should pay for it, whether a car is worth fixing and what it might cost to fix quite like Matt. Here’s to keeping more decent old cars on the road.
@jeremybrown9179 Though Mr Peak does manage to use an acceptable amount of words per sentence as oppose to Mr Emms 4000 per sentence!
Matt Goodwin is the next Matt Watson when it comes to the natural humour and presenting style.
Mat W is not in the same league. Matt G is 'hors catégorie'. In an exclusive class. I find MW rather irritating. High Peak is youtube Art ! Cheers !
He is better...!
Another great video
Matt Watson is rather irritating, in my opinion.
I like both
A friend had one of those from new and I was amazed at how crude, bouncy and cheaply finished it was at the time. Personally, I’d never buy an American car, they’re all built to a (low) budget. But look at it this way, you can sell the tow bar for £200, you found 27p in the cup holder and it’s got to be worth £299.73 as scrap so you’re unlikely to lose anything. FYI, sick horses go to the glue factory 🤣
Not forgetting, he probably made a good few quid out of the RUclips video and the Car Vertical promotion.
I would NEVER buy a French or Italian car. Pieces of shit. They were rubbish and we sent them packing and hope they never come back. Our junk cars serve us very well with many going over 300,000 miles with minimal servicing required. My 1990 Chevrolet Lumina served me very well from 1991 until I retired in 2012. Started after sitting outside on nights that should you be caught outside overnight would be fatal. Just Brutal temps. Just remember the American cars you get are not the same as ours. Different drivetrains there. As far as safety standards go, we have Two agencies to make sure our cars are safe IIHS Insurance institute for highway safety and NHTSA National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Bumper, side impact, rollover, offset frontal impact standards. Front Side and side curtain airbags as well as AEB, lane departure warning cross traffic alert standard backup cameras and more Offset frontal impact is a car crashed into a fixed barrier at 35 mph with only one third of the front of the car to simulate you crossing the center line and crashing into an oncoming car. Much more relevant than a full frontal because it is a much more common type of crash Just a brutal test they must pass. So, you keep yours and we will keep ours. Sort of feel sorry for you.
Once again in stitches 😂😂😂 especially at the "W,A,T" scribbled on the rear seats.
Id hate to be the previous owner watching this back having to re-evaluate their life choices 🤣
What do you get if you cross a budgie suffering with indigestion and a Cherokee?
A Chirpy Burpy Cheap Jeep!
Thank you ladies and gentlemen, thank you, I'm here all week 😁
As an American I really enjoy watching these to see all the differences in specs and even brands we don’t have access to. This was sold as a “Liberty” here in the US with a 3.7 L V6 as the only option.
I think there was a diesel option too for a couple of model years. Very rare though. Think it was a 2.5 TD
@@HighPeakAutoscorrect but indeed super rare.
@@HighPeakAutos2.8td in the Netherlands
@HighPeakAutos I had 2003 diesel 2.5 td limited great fun to drive very nippy for its size loads of room for the twins and all of their luggage and it pulled a 6 birth caravan with no problems
The Liberty CRD was the 2.8, which I believe is the same engine as this Cherokee 2.5, just bigger cause 'merica.
Don't know about others, but I watch to see if a vehicle in terrible shape can be saved by the end of the video. Also, to see if one that looks perfectly good, has some hidden issue that would cause it to be send to the scrap heap. Always an exciting mystery. (And of course, to see by how much you overspend, Matt.) 😇
Your dry humour throughout this video really adds to the entertainment value! I assume your view was that it was better to laugh than cry about this one!😄
As always, great video, no messing around like a 14-year-old kid with his friends, honest, down-to-earth, sensible, keep it up 🙂
Genuinely stumped, mate. This is a tricky one!
It could make a fun off-road, demolition derby-type banger, maybe.
Best of luck, whatever you do!
Always enjoy every one off your videos mate Very very informative .Keep them coming please 👍
Watching this video is a great way to round off a bad day at work. So amusing, cheers Matt.
Matt - Love it! I was working for a Jeep/Chrysler dealer in London back when this car was new and I never new about the stalk switching on the interior light! Never once sold a Sport, always Limited and usualy the 3.7 petrol or the 2.8 auto. Sport petrol was fookin aweful. I liked them but I didn't have to own one, just jumped in and out of demo cars including a 4.0 Grand Cherokee we called 'The QE2' on account of how many gallons per mile it needed.
My sister had one of these, every MOT it would fail and cost her a grand! Parts so hard to get. Eventually we buy any shite took it off her. Swapped for a diesel kuga, which one year later imploded it’s rear diff.
It will be nice to see Grand Cherokee review, great video as always 💪🏻
Been watching your Chanel for a while now , plus looked at your garage reviews I think you’re a really honest and conscientious trader which are hard to find 👍
Must be the first time I’ve heard the word Tombola in at least 40 years. Another very enjoyable video from Mat. Keep up the good work, I literally look forward to your clips every week.
We have tombola at my kids school fete every year. You’ve been missing out.
Had one of these last year. It was the car to start my offroad passion.
There is a funny story with it though. A guy and I went with it on the hills around just to have some fun, typical to guys, I admit. And, unavoidably we had to drive it back home at some point at midnight. Surprise surprise, a police car stopped us on some country forrest road, with high beams and a lantern and pointed at the driver (me) to open the window. And I scrambled about finding the switch for the windows and all I could do was to lock the door 😂 eventually they left us alone, seeing we were so damn boggered 😂
always entertaining and interesting to watch these are, especially the cheap ones
Excellent humor in this one. Love it, and great review as well.
I was hoping my lil Yank Tank would do much better living it’s life in England, but apparently the rain took its toll on her😏 was also hoping being a diesel it would be better than the gas engines they offer here. I was on my way to a meeting at a Casino in Evansville Indiana, stopped to get direction at a small engine parts place, asked them how to get the casino and was told for $10 they’d give me directions, I left immediately what a bunch of jerks. I’m from a small town in the mountains of West Virginia and people just ain’t that way.
Wow that’s terrible
Is that old coal mining territory? People have the same mind set where I live in South Yorkshire. When Dolly Parton came to Rotherham to promote her reading charity we loved her. There's still a picture of her in Rotherham hospital.
After seeing those rear arches, I did have an inkling that this car would be very corroded underneath.
I’ve never been a fan of American cars, whether that’s because I’m European, and they are quite different to what I’m used to, I’m not sure , but I’ve never had any desire to own one.
Great video as always Matt❤.
thanks man. I requested it and you've done it. great job
7:22 This one even came with flowers (growing).... Love the cheap cars- series and the diversity of all the content on your channel!
The sport is the entry model, the 2.8 is a pretty decent engine. VM same as most big fiats and iveco vans. I had one of these, the sills go quick. My 3.7 lasted me 4 years and was only £1400, until it blew it's gasket.
That instantly made me think of the topgear usa special when Jeremy arrives with a camero RS bragging, then realises RS is the entry level. 🤣
Honestly, this looks better than the Honda CRV 2nd gen which I paid 5 grand for it. A paid car check and MOT history showed the car was fine until I took it for inspection because it was missing a service book and it was super grubby, unlike the photo shown. Upon inspection, the exhaust manifold has rotted, the condenser was smashed (hidden unrecorded Cat S) and the rear corroded and crumbled like a cookie. Thank god I was able to get a return and refund for it just today...
Weirdly you've had a similar situation to me, my choice was between a 2006 Jeep Cherokee Sport, it had some nice wheels in it and looked pretty tidy, or a 2005 Honda CR-V 2.2 Sport which is what I went with in the end.
Enjoyed as always
Great video as always..you make me smile with your phrases for dodgy stuff left in cars.
Maybe you should do a list of all the dodgy tyre names you have come across 🙂
Looking forward to the next video 👍
I haven't watched all the video, but I already know that I will hear the phrase "I massively overspent"
WTF were you thinking Matt? You've been around long enough to know better about the Jeep Cherokee. It has a reputation for good reason.
Well at least he hasnt gone to "i massively overspent" stage with it
He buys all cars from this dealer so not like he asked to buy this what comes in he buys he explains in the video
@@darrenquarterman2611 I'm sure he's not forced to buy it.
He’s probably made more than 500 quid off the back of this video alone in time….Chill…I don’t think he’s that bothered 😁
Definitely love the idea of the off roading sesh! Would love to see it 😁
Excellent video again
Literally booked mine in today, for the big old scrapheap in the sky 😢... Although I have replaced it with a Rangey classic, so moving up in the world 🧐😅
Very cool
@HighPeakAutos it was the rust (and all the old sensors & electronics) that killed mine too. Shame, cos it still drove OK. Already prefer the Rangey, although I'm definitely more Worzel Gummidge than Country Gent 🤣
Definitely off-road it, Matt! See how long it lasts! 😆
awesome video, would be fun to see a video of you off roading it
Had one of these 7 years ago... Genuinely loved it. 👍🏻
How bad can it be = I have seriously overspent but it has 2 cup holders 😂
But recon this will be £750 spares repair, spend nothing just send her up the road.
I am not half way yet 😎
Matt, you need to tell the guy who parks those cars to stop backing them into the bushes!!! Doesn’t he know you do RUclips vids 😂😂😂
Hi Matt, I really enjoy watching your videos, especially when you bring a classic back. It is funny that you are unfazed when you've lost money by buying cars blind! Makes great viewing. I think that car will drop to pieces if you off-road, but it would be funny to see it fall apart into oblivion 🤣. Thank you for entertaining us 👍😀
Glad you like them! I've done it for so long now bad news is like water off a ducks back.
Better luck next time matt and another good video 🚘🚙🚗👍👍👍👍⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️👏👏👏
Matt is your range rover the super charged one? I've been looking at 405 to use as a tow car for picking up cars on a trailer. Do you ever do that with yours?
Yes it is. Nope, never towed
One for the knackers yard
Good to hear that not all pubs have gone out of business in England.
My dad has a 2001 one of these, 2.5L CRD Limited, manual. I love driving it, sounds like an absolute tank and it's great when the turbo kicks in. It hasn't been the most reliable car to be honest, it has 165K miles and has been welded twice. Not sure how many MOTs it will have left in it
Many years ago, when I lived in Saudi Arabia, there was a car sold there called the Daewoo Racer. It was a good name for that market. However, the brochure boasted that it had "German styling and American technology". I always thought that that was the wrong way round …
Was it a tractor?
Like the Alfa Arna. Japanese styling and Italian engineering.
Lol my first car was a daewoo. The good old Nubira.
I loved it but it was a terrible car.
@@BasedinReality1984Why? It was a Polish made Nubira?
The fuel tank on these really put me of!! There dangerous. (in serious accidents)
Best one yet love your vid . First time seen you scared driving one 😂😂😂😂😂
One of the funniest videos you've put out so far Matt. Really amusing!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed
Can’t it go for export 🤔 they seem to take anything
Sounds like a Massey Ferguson. As rough as a badgers......
Travelling community with love this!
14:40 Highways have "North/East/West/South" on their signage. Also, it's a great way to find out where you're pointed at, if you're using an old map.
Lmao, as an American, I’ve never known that the whole compass heading thing was unique to us and I have to admit it’s crazy important to me as I’m always aware of my orientation and that of landmarks, buildings, etc. I think it’s probably because of how spread out everything is here, especially in the west half, sorry, “left half” of the country where I live. I’m up in the mountains where I often need to use the Sun’s position to keep my bearings in order to not get lost.
We even give directions for things inside large buildings using compass headings, like in supermarkets “you’ll find the bread it in the northeast corner.”
I once had to travel to North Dakota, one of the flattest, most featureless places on earth and when I got up in the morning at the Hotel, the sky was overcast to the point I couldn’t tell where the sun was and when I realized I had lost my bearings, it shut my brain down. I felt genuinely discombobulated and panicked as I knew I needed to head north out town but had no idea where north was. I had to stop everything so I could open a map on my phone because of just how unnerving the feeling was.
I’d be so screwed in Britain, lol. I’d have to keep a compass on a string around my neck like a Boy Scout in order to keep the panic attacks at bay.
It sounds to me like what you need in America is more pubs 😂
@@HighPeakAutos Given that I’ve never lived within a walkable distance from one, I agree. lol
In the world of SHIT BOXES, a used cheap Cherokee, is a winner.
Mate, you are so funny and I’m really enjoying your videos, live long and prosper brother! 😅👍
Glad you like them!
"I can't go wrong with just 500 pounds...can I?" Hah!....endless entertainment though and a different 'case study' every time. Excellent stuff!
Demolition derby?
Keep chickens in it
It’s always raining where you live lol😂 like your vids m8 👌
I'm a great fan if High Peak Autos and keep up the good work. I would love if you could do a review on a Hyundai i10 there really small and cheap to run cars.😊
Horrible car 😞
These videos have motivated me to put good money into my first gen Hyundai i10 rather than getting newer car. 2 new goodyear tyres fitted today to replace the "tour chasers" that were on there
these uploads give me life while i wait for my driving test
Great fun video, thank you. If it was mine I would try selling the tow bar and rear shelf etc, along with anything else of value. Then I would, as you suggest, find a track and have a great day out and then flog what's left to a scrap yard. Who knows you might get somewhere near breaking even.
...Let's put that back...oh...it's a Sport...you really don't mess around !! Love it !!!! :)
yes, seeing this puppy crunched a bit at an offroad site would be lovely to me. The diesel could help a lot in crawling up inclines
Take it to a play and play site, tixover quarry, devils pit, frickley. 20 quid for tha day and you can mess around 9-4pm. Would love to see the video!
That intro though 😂 Love your humor. And YES, I'm one of those people.
The joys of the UK climate, destroying cars at any opportunity . The fact that the car has folding mirrors but the mirror bases are still broken is unbelievable. Great video.
The whole video seemed to be tongue in cheek, highly amusing, still worth a bit of fun green laning or just off-roading
Hi Matt just seen this video, I think you're idea of taking it off road for a day is perfect end too this rust bucket ,,cheers Phil from Newark
Such Fun!
👍off roading sounds a hoot, nowt wrong with mixing things up. All work and no play...
The 2.7 5cyl was a Merc engine only found in the Grand Cherokee. The 2.8 in the Cherokee is a 4 cyl VM Motori engine. Both are noisy, though.
is it just me or do others try and spot if the beautiful range rover has any warning lights on😀 , great video preferred the 95 /96 sq ones ones, i had a 4 l ltd auto years ago, loved it
I had a 2009 Patriot as my second car after I graduated from uni, which I imagine is pretty similar & it's still one of my favourite buys & I currently own a 2023 RS5 coupe & previous to that 3 different models of F-Type & before that a BMW 335D...well, you get the point!
You're letting the side down pal. I believe it's the law that when parking a Range Rover, it's compulsory to use two parking spaces !
True that. 🇬🇧
Hi Mat, go on and have some fun with the Jeep on the track, maybe it can be fun.
I have a 2006 with 3.7l. It is called the Liberty here in the US. I often say it’s a car that shouldn’t have been built, but it has saved me a few times.
Had two Grand Cherokees when we live in the states - fabulous. Did not need the compass to navigate when living in Colorado, the Rockies don’t move. 😂
If looked after properly they are actually very reliable. I’ve currently got a 2002 3.7 Limited in perfect condition with no rust at all. I get it serviced every 5000 miles and I’ve never had any issues with it
This brought back memories. I got a brand new Cherokee 3.7 litre V6 in 2005. I loved the car and at least for the 4 years I had the car it was totally reliable. Just standard servicing at every 6000 miles ! It was a fun car to drive and I always left it in 4H as it had a permanent 4 wheel drive system which was unusual at the time for a 4x4 in this price bracket. Also in 2H the rear end tended to swing out on corners whereas in 4H it held the road really well. I had the extra underbody protection plates fitted at new and I did take it off road and lots of horse box towing. I fitted BFGoodrich AT's when the tyres wore out which made it much better in muddy fields towing the horse box. I also liked the top info display and by the way you could change it to Celsius. Overall I thought it was a great car and at the time, compared to a Disco 2 - you got way more goodies for your money.
genuine spray of tea at the "dubious stains" and silent T
😂
Nice hoodie that 👍
You can make some of them jeeps look really nice just not that one. Shame, great vid as always onwards and upwards eh 👍👍
I'm a new fan and really enjoy your videos. Just wondered about your CarVertical which I guess is equivalent to our CarFax. Having just gone through a car buying experience I found a number of vehicles with some reported damage over the years.
I noted that in all the videos I've looked at in your channel there never appears to be any reported damage with CarVertical ?? UK drivers more careful ??
Just wondered
My high school biology teacher got one of these when they were new... He's American, so it was probably his dream car at the time or something I imagine... Which I could understand, because it does have some character... As well as rust and Frun Four tyres in this case
My wife owns the 2007 3.7l 6 cylinder and loves it. We bought if from a friend 5 years ago for virtually nothing. We had an aftermarket lift kit installed and had Wrangler wheels fitted. It does look quite mean and rugged in the car parks here in Dubai. I've tried to convince her to sell it for years, but she always says why? it's never let me down....and she's right, this thing is bulletproof, starts every time. Don't get me wrong, it rattles, shakes and squeaks over every single bump, but just keeps on going. I think she'll have it forever. Loving the reviews Matt. Great stuff as always.
To be fair with the back seats down ideal as a tip run / mechant pick up for the house renovation channel.
We had a 2003 CRD LTD 2.5, leather etc, bought in 2005. The electric blue sort of colour. It had a built in satnav fitted as part of the deal. It was a very nice car. We took it from the UK to the Pyrenees for skiing. We took it to France when we moved there and did a deal with a guy who was moving back, swapping cars (his was lhd and French registered) and some money our way. He did intend to sell it on his return to the UK, but kept it as his wife loved it. From memory, they were 4 x 4 of the year in 2003.
I used to have one of these and it was a complete crock, (v6 petrol version) they break a lot, but because they're not that popular over here, the cost of replacement parts is very high. I've driven a lot of Jeeps in the states, and over there they're cheap as chips to fix and maintain.
Banger racing !!!
Off road sounds about right for it. You can have such fun going round the course who knows they may buy it off you.
