- Custom Fiberglass Subwoofer Enclosure Build for Infiniti Q50 for corner of the trunk.
I will show you how to do the fiberglass work, and how to custom fit it in the corner of your car. I show how to measure the cubic air space. I also show how to get it ready for speaker fitment. This is my first time so it is your first time as well you will find this step by step video helpful from supply list to doing the work. This is also great for doing any type of fiberglass subwoofer enclosure in any trunk, behind the truck seat or under the truck seat.
I will show you how you can build a custom fiberglass subwoofer enclosure (BOX) that is built for the corner of your trunk.

Hey man, because of you I did my own fiberglass enclosure and it came out awesome. Thank you Thank you Thank you;
Way to go! Email me a pic of you get a chance.
Chris, ok your comment just confirmed that I'm gonna give a go and try it...
@@christophermcdonough3466 howd it go
I really think I should do this, I enjoy DIY and even though it's a lot of work I'd much rather have a subwoofer that's tidy out the way, than a massive box carrying around all the time
Jack's Tutorials go for it! Yes, it’s work but the results are awesome!!
I need one of those knee things for My wife
Gardy faustin I bet that’s right.
Getting one is the easy part. Training her to use it is the challenge
I need one for your wife too
@@technotic_us I need one for your mom
@@gardyfaustin8707 I already got her one. We got more traffic coming through there than a trap house in Oakland. We ran a special on Black Friday and you'd think the Kardashians were stayin there.
Just don't touch the one under your bed. That one's mine.
One thing that might be faster than taping the panel would be to use adhesive carpet protection plastic. Its flexible and would adhere to the carpet in a single sheet which make the probability of seeping through very low.
Nice tip, thank you!
I find brushing resin into the Matt first on a table then transfer to the work piece works well.
Wetting the fibres allow the the Matt to soften and years less resin.
I used a lot of resin, too much. Thank you for the tip.
Well sir, you have taken a task I knew very little about and made it seem very very doable for just about anyone granted you prepare for it right. Thank you much I will be using this to modify some door panels and to fit a couple 15s in my RAV4. This looks fun even! The tricky part is seeming like it will be making the front end of the box where the speaker mounts but even then it seems much easier than anticipated. Gonna be tricky deciding what shape I want to make something to replace my very sizable 40inch tall box that the 15 resides in currently. I want my trunk space back!
Good luck to you!
I did my 1st layer without a mask on a moderately windy day outside and I was fine ... 2nd layer with less wind and the next day I had to lay in bed all day feeling like a terrible hangover and even some shortness of breath the night of laying the fiberglass. I'm not sure how you were impacted but I've worn proper respirator for all the other layers which was completely worth it ...
It must have been more windy for me, I did not experience any issues.
12:33 The Dog: “Aw Shucks! He’s making me a new water bowl!”😂
Earl Daniel 😂
I find it easier to lay up foil on a table and wet the fiberglass on a flat surface and then put it in place. Nice job
I bet that would have been easier!
Liked the video for being a Texan 🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾
Thank you Christian!
The resien doesn't bleed or soak through that thin masking tape layer?
It does not.
You’ve just shown why I’m gonna pay $600 bucks to have this done. Lol.
Good job
Thank you, if you need it for a Q50 I will sell you that one.
This helped tremendously, I owe ya a beer! 🍺
Subscribe and we will call it even, lol. I am glad it helped.
Great video brother, btw should i sand the existing layer before adding any new layers? Been reading alot that such practice is essential for better bonding between layers.. I am planning to build really thick /strong sub box
That is great advice. I have not had any issues, but I’m sure sanding between layers would be better!
Use a cheap chip brush to apply the resin..much quicker..its like eating soup with a fork! Instead of a spoon
I agree!
Also all those light colored spots are air bubbles, so take the chip brush and dob dob dob
lol no leaks yet as you see water coming out the bottom.
Lol, true I sow that in the edit and left it in there. You were the first to comment on it.
Amazing video....will make one for myself in future for sure...right now working with mdf only because that design suiting my car... but this is next thing in my list
Awesome! I hope you get around to it soon!
Ha guess what I just now got around to do this and my brush kept moving the sheet thing... I got mad and gave up
I'm doing this, this weekend all because of this video. I hope I don't fuck it up.....
It is more work than it looks like but you will be glad you did it yourself! Good luck!
How thick is your walls of fiber glass . You should make it thicker or as thick as the wood you would use
Justin Green 3 or 4 layers thick. Maybe 1/4” or less thick. If you are using wood, the wood should be 1/2-3/4 thick. So the fiberglass will not be near as thick as the wood.
How do you get ride of the smell?
The smell goes away in a day or so.
Anyway you could send me links on everything I would need to do something similar just smaller
Links are in the description.
Aluminum foil and foil tape
, save you about 10 years of masking the inside trunk
That makes sense.
Did you put the resin on the tape and then put the fiber glass on top?
Sorry, I don’t remember.
You're talking about safety, but you don't have a guard on the angle grinder.....
Good point.
Ok great! But is that chemically resistant masking tape at the beginning?
Nope just cheap painters tape.
Awesome, I will try to get back into fiberglass, soon. I had "fun" about 15-20 years ago (or more!?), when I made my own horns (horn-loaded compression drivers, remember those!?), from molds I made myself. That was "fun", to say the least. They sounded great, though. :)
Very cool!!
Hello, can u bond fiber glass and 3/4 inch mdf wood? If so will it work?
Yes you can. Drill a pattern of holes in the MDF to give the epoxy more stuff to "stick" to. I like this because it leaves you with clean, flat edges.
I have so many questions lol. How many layers did you use? Was all of this done at once? If not, what’s a good point to stop and add layers later. Is there a specific type of fiberglass/resin to get? I’m sure I can get it done, just want to be clear in materials needed.
kcflyguyent I did 3 coats layers total. I am making some changes in the description with updated links to the products. The fiberglass kit I purchased will make about 4 of these boxes but I wanted to make sure I did not run short. If you are getting the items from amazon this will be a great list to use. Feel free to ask me any other questions. If you give me an hour everything will be updated in the description. I am working on it now.
kcflyguyent the links are updated. Thank you for watching, good luck on your box!
I will be needing the 6 pack as I will be making a few sub boxes. I will try to upload pics. Did you end up using the whole roll of fiberglass on your sub box?
Thanks.
Alex Ginel I would guess I used well less than half. I think you will be able make at least 2 sub boxes per roll.
Great vid-GBO!
Ray Burns I am glad you liked it! Subscribe and check out the other videos in the series if you get a chance!!
Good work. It’s not easy making a vid as you’re trying to do something that few have.
Thank you!
Whoa, great video! . What do you think a shop should charge to build a custom box like you so expertly showed here? How much does it cost for the parts and product needed to build the box, and how long would u say is the total time it took you to build it. Its hard to tell as its on RUclips and all the video editing. I was thinking about doing this myself, im capable, but lack the garage and tools, im not very handy but am a fast learner. U r a pro, can a novice do it yourself, or is it too difficult? What do you think?
Thanks! Jeff
Jeff, I am handy but a total novice at this so I can be done by a novice. If you can get one done for $250 and I think you can, that is a very fair deal.
4:33 why not use a paint brush? 🤔🤔🤔
That will certainly work too!
How thick should the fiberglass be?
1/8-3/16” is all.
How do you stick the plastic to the tape
Just leave some of the sticky side exposed and the plastic will stick to it.
Does the resin not soak through the masking tape
No it doesn’t.
Use a wood cutting blade there's no smoke and alot swifter
I will have to try that next time.
Hello! Did you use straight resin or did you add hardener to this?
Mixed hardener as well.
There is 7.48 gallons in a cubic foot
That is correct.
I'm hoping that the fiber glass is the correct size one reason why I don't like to order online. That's what I get for not double checking.
Alex Ginel sorry that happened I will check the link on the tape. Amazon will take it back, I know it is a pain though.
Please let me know how yours turns out. I will be putting another video out in this over the weekend.
I well be ordering the correct size tape and hopefully start the project next week. This project is for my girlfriend. It's going to be in her 09 Toyota matrix. I would love to record the process but my time is limited. I will try to take pictures and send them to you some how. I'll be waiting for the final product.
The Fiberglass will be the right size.
Alex Ginel I look forward to see how it turns out. If you can post the pics here you can email them to me I would love to see them. TheImprovementCH@gmail.com
Hey Alex,
Here is the link to the next part in this series. I hope your project is going well so far!
ruclips.net/video/wjU_qbN9vLQ/видео.html
Worked your ass off on that enclosure didn't ya lol
I did indeed! Probably harder than needed.
Use a pizza cutter to cut the mat , works great
Johnny Noiseboysgarage nice tip! Thank you.
How do you determine the air space?
I guessed then measured it after the fact with water. You can take some measurements and guess pretty close.
No next video?
It’s on there.
you have so many bubbles
Yes, there was lots of bubbles. This is what happens when I try something I do not know that much about.
What is the part number for the tape?
Hey Alex,
I updated the part number in the description as well as included a link to it below. This is the correct width tape and it is a 60 yard roll. You may need 2 or 3 depending on the size of your project. Thanks for watching!
amzn.to/2Vqf2Qu
Would have been easyer to go with patches with the glass instead of doing it as a whole sheet. Also you said you dont see a leak but i seen one
esmokebaby I did not see the leak at the time of filming, but yes, I saw it too in editing. I did fix the leak.
The patches I feel like were harder due to the resin only being workable for 8 mins or so. None of it was very easy like a lot of videos I watched seamed to make it look easy. It is also more difficult to film and work with something with a time window. Maybe you are right patches being used with smaller batches of resin would have been easier, it would have certainly used less resin. Thank you for the comment and I hope you choose to subscribe!
@@TheImprovementChannel Use polyester resin to laminate the fiberglass chopped strand mat. Much longer working time
Using a cut off wheel with no gaurd is a great way to fuck yourself up...believe me 😮
You are not wrong!
Hi. On the description you put the wrong link for the masking tape. I ordered the tape thinking that I was going to receive the same one you use in the video. It turn out to be to thin.
Sorry that happend.
Please learn how to use a grinder better and don’t use a 6” disc on a 4.5” grinder
Ohhh so you tape it down first.... Duhbb
You made that look horribly more difficult than it actually is.
joestack78 I agree, it was my first one to do. What stood out to you that I could have done differently to have made it easier or at least look easier?
Agree, preewet the mat and lift it in, then you can use a roller on a flat area. With plastic underneath. Take a look on boat restoring videos.
Also use smaller batches and smaller mat-pieces when doing this in the sun.
Use disposable cheep brushes and rollers, they only need to last 30 min anyway..
For strength put in wood or foam rods that you put mat over.. then the box wont flex.
Good luck 👍
joestack78 thank you for the tips.
Lol theres a learight there lol
Idk what that means.
But it literally was leaking... "I see no leaks" bro is blind. Didn't even watch his video back over to see that it definitely was leaking..
I did not see it at the time bro. I left it rather than taking it out in the edit.
WAYYYYYYtoo much resin and you want to dab with the brush never pour and brush it lol... 3 inch by 6 inch pieces at a time and crisscross them like lattice
Spent too much in resin as well didn’t I?!
Oh and ya thrre was a leak
I saw that during editing.
Phuck I'll just buy a subwoofer box...
Hennessy * yes it was a good amount of work!
why do you use a stick like a pepega?
LMFAO, a stick to spread liquid at the beginning?? just get a cheap £1 Paint brush......
Leon Wall live and learn, right?
