- We’re journeying from the top to the bottom of Aotearoa New Zealand taking you into the heart of our country’s incredible food culture. This NZ food series will take you into the kitchens of New Zealand’s favourite restaurants, behind the scenes of New Zealand’s most iconic foods onto boats and into farms and together we’ll gather and cook New Zealand’s unique food.
This video revolves around kaimoana- seafood and kicks off at the top of Te Ika-a-Māui, the North Island. We take you into a family business called Apatu Aqua producing mouthwatering smoked fish before we head to an unmissable fish and chip shop in Rawene in the Hokianga serving up local pātiki- flounder, caught that morning. What we ate and where we ate it:
1. Smoked fish from Apatu Aqua, 284 Cable Bay Block Road, Coopers Beach 0420. Open Monday to Saturday 9:00am to 4:00pm.
2. Flounder and chips at Hokianga Takeaways, 2 Parnell Street, Rawene 0473. Open 7 days, 11:00am to 3:00pm and 5:00pm to 7:00pm.

Last week I got dragged out of bed to go get a Paua pie from Houhora after partner watched that video - the smoker in this video is just up the road but I feel another road trip coming on ------ flounder - my favourite fish !! I know we have them local too but not going to turn down a tiki tour . Who knows where we may follow these two !!!???🐠🐟🐬🐳🐳

*_smoke house_* - Very cool that Sheena had access. Fun seeing the racks getting turned, roe being flipped, etc. and the entire process. 👍
*_salmon wings_* - If those are collars I've never heard them called wings but when cut in half they do resemble so makes sense.
*_fish feast_* - Dang. That was a ton of fish! I'm sure it was all delicious but if you had to award a winner, what would it be? My current favorite smoked fish in order are salmon, mackerel and bluefish.
*_fish and chip shop_* - Enjoyed reading the menu boards. Happy you filmed. Noticed kumara chips. Mmm, mmm. Speaking of chips, the menu said the flounder is served with "half a scoop" of chips. Looks like you two got the friends and family treatment! 😀

Hi Tosh! Yes I believe our salmon wings are your collars 😄 I would have to go salmon as the smoky flavour was just infused so beautifully into the fish. And it was so silky. Thomas loved the smoked roe which we spread on bits of toast with a bit of lemon. What does bluefish taste like? And what sort of texture does it have? I love that fish and chip shop- the flounder was sensational- they have the cooking time down pat. And yes- a very generous portion of chips 😍They could probably tell we were starving 😆 Glad you enjoyed this one mate, thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers, Sheena
🐟 Bluefish is VERY oily so as you can imagine it has a strong taste. People who don't love seafood will probably hate it. You, Thomas and I will say it's full of flavor and gobble it up. 😀 In general I put it in the sardine, mackerel, herring category. I know those all taste differently but bluefish evokes lots of negative because it is a bit "fishy." The texture is quite firm when baked but mostly I've eaten it smoked and as a pâté. TMI. Ha.

Jealous lol.....I love how you are capturing on your videos the beautiful Kai our country has to offer, I saw one world renowned chef travel through our country doing a food video and felt very let down by what he highlighted as “NZ food”. We have so much more to offer and we are blessed to have the best of the best when it comes to seafood, beef, lamb, dairy etc. We don’t just do hangi , but that’s yum too lol 😆

I used to live on Dunkirk Road, Panmure in 1976 ish (I was 16 then) and my Dad and I would crank up the Coleman lantern and grab the broomsticks with the spikes, walk across the road and get fresh flounder in the estuary. Fresh Flounder for breakfast. What memories. Also as a 5 year old 1965 living on Birdwood Rd, Swanson catching eels in the creek behind our house and smoking them on the incinerator in a wet potato sack.Yummy.

Wow, my Kim told me you two were back releasing new episodes but this is the first I caught, and it's perfect. We love Daneger and Stacey's current NZ travel series but it's fun to see your Foodie version. I've lived near Auckland over the years because of work but never got a chance to see much of the country like you all are doing. These smoked fish reminds me of my Danish years, as they also brilliant with delicacies like this. Yummy yummy, love Snapper and fried flounder 😃

Driving through such beautiful landscapes is so inspiring and peaceful! I'd be tempted to stay a few days at the fish smoking place, just to get my fill of the aromas...and of course, the samples. Another gorgeous video. guys! (We'll just ignore how that un-serrated knife mangled your beautiful loaf of bread.)
🤣 mangled alright!! It had literally just come out of the oven and the van was I’ll equipped to deal with it!
