Final Cleaning 6-bolt 4G63 for Assembly

- After your block is back from machining, it's still not ready for assembly. I've demonstrated a less-toxic chemical-means of engine cleaning before than carb cleaner, and I'll link it below... It's definitely the cheapest way to do this but it's still not the most effective. It doesn't strip paint and it still leaves residue that has to be manually cleaned out like you will see here. So does using more toxic chemicals like carb cleaner.
I paid somebody to hot-tank clean this block with something so incredibly powerful that 99.97% of what I got back was 100% pure cast iron. Not one flake of paint. Not one speck of carbon. Every surface with a machine finish has been completely re-worked to perfection. Whatever the process was, it worked well enough to completely remove 100% of the pitted rust. There was plenty of that when it went out my door, and this engine's prior appearance and disassembly as can be easily observed in this video: • Galant VR 4 Engine Tea...
Yes. This is THAT exact same numbers-matching Galant VR-4 block. 109K people have watched that disassembly video as of now, and that was a fantastic video. I just watched it again and it made me laugh pretty hard. Thank you if you have, and watch it if you haven't. I hope that 109K people are still interested in seeing its follow-up.
In this video I complete the final cleaning and inventory of section 11-130 for any 6-bolt 4g63. This is one of THE most critical steps if you assemble your own engines, and if you've taken your block as far down as this to start from scratch. This is what you do when you get it back from machining, and prepare it for assembly.
The mineral spirits method is safer than carb cleaner, but it's still a petroleum product. The method I demonstrate here is even more pure than spring water but is still every bit as effective, Because with or without toxic solvents, your final cleaning still requires physical scrubbing and agitation to come clean enough. If you own a propane burner, then the materials I demonstrate using with this method cost less today than a CASE of carb cleaner., and that's about what it would take to clean an entire engine block for assembly. Why use chemicals when hot water and a little soap will boil off all the oil from it just the same? I show you how to keep it from rusting afterwards.

Please understand my gratitude to every single bit of what you're seeing! I'm receiving services today from shops who help build the world's fastest import cars, and now I get to bring you next-level build quality, better than I ever set out to achieve in the first place. Some will let you have an inside look, and some will not. That's just how it is. It's truly a blessing to have them involved in my street car restorations because now I get to share THAT with you. But I can't afford to partner with them like Cleetus could, and change their minds. I'm just the IT guy. I consider myself extremely fortunate to just have received a tour and the handshake of a guy who's helped other racers win millions collectively. So there are industry secrets being protected as well as identities here, and that's how it can get at this level. Not everyone will want to be mentioned on social media. It's ONLY because of all of you who watch my videos, and ESPECIALLY those who sponsor me on Patreon that it's even possible for me to bring you this quality of work... I 100% couldn't have done this or showed you anything like this without all of that because it's taken everything to make this happen! Thank you!

Great to see ya Jafro! Thanks for another excellent video.
We miss you too Tom!
Hey Tom! Great to see you too, do you still have the galant?
Was just rewatching your stuff as a childhood nostalgia trip, your content really shaped my career man and I just wanted to thank you.
@@KrautSpaceMagic Thank you for the kind words and I'm glad I could help in that way. Take care sir.
@@AdmissionGaming Hey there! I do not, I sold it some time ago.
I still can't believe how much time has passed since I started watching your vids (10+ years) and how life has progressed and changed for me in that time. One thing's always remained the same... Jafro. Still miss my DSM.
You showed me that the way I knew things should be done wasn't just a fairytale. I was a terrible tech, so now I stick with the keyboard stuff instead lol.
Thanks for the upload!
Man, I can't either! When I fail, I raise standards on myself instead of compromising. It gets the best of me sometimes. Many people quit, but I just wind up taking longer to do it even better.
@@Jafromobile Yes sir, happy to be given the pleasure of coming along for the ride.
The nicest 6 bolt on this earth
Its 2025 and we are blessed with another video from Jafromobile, it will be a good year afterall. Thank you for your hard work all these years.
Best. RUclipsr. Ever. Still. & Always. 😊
Good stuff Jafro. Using ATF will assist the ring seat process as well as lubricate.
Congrats on the clean block. I think I would've gone with a light grey, but I always like light-colored engine bays & spotting leaks easily on daily drivers. Glad to see the truck's contributing
I've done white before. Freaked a lot of people out, they were like "why?! Doesn't that show dirt?!", and no... no it didn't. It didn't even collect it. Look up my Honda Civic Confession video. It looks spectacular, and your taste isn't weird.
Another great episode of a man's slow decent into madness. Love it!
If you lived in Richmond, VA you'd be right here with me. You see what I did there?
Monday has just been upgraded. Thank you young man!
i dont know how you have the patience for this its more time consuming than measuring all the parts big props to you man
We're done with most all of both now... Now comes the fun part with torque loads and squishing new parts together. Oh... you mean the video and the documenting in the description part, don't you? lol
Like a few others have said you inspire me to keep my build alive. I have toyed with selling my project or junking it but I owe it to my self and the car to keep trying.
Thank you for all of this stuff Jafro! Amazing and educational as usual. Thank you for keeping the flame alive in me with my 2g, my built but in pieces and representing the jack stand warriors is currently getting in touch with mother nature more than i would like 3 states away. I am fighting to get back to it.
You will be reunited in time. It's all a matter of priorities. I had a dentist tell me that once and it made me mad at first, but after chewing on it, he ended up being 100% right. Pun intended. My videos and these cars will always be ready right when they're supposed to be. Rarely when I want them to be.
31:37 - that block is 100% dancing because it's so happy XD
You make me feel less crazy about how long i take to do workarounds. Thank you.
Sometimes i just put on your videos and listen to audio only for Asmr. Love the content as always. Keep it coming!
Sometimes my video skills suck so bad you have to! ;)
God I love the 4G63, and Jafro too! Love the content man, and stoked to see the progress. I envy your contacts and attention to detail. Honestly don't care if I have to be an outlaw, I will never give up on my 4G63 and Internal Combustion Engines.
I have some reservations about my following remarks.
Could one not have rented the appropriate sized vessel from a local entity?
Ya know you're having Seth and boys over for a lobsta boil! When finished. A little detergent and a fine stainless pad, and you're as good as new before returning said rented vessel. It's just a thought. The job is done now. Maybe others could use my observation.
I enjoy your presentations.
If renting large cookware is a thing, I'm now wary of it after reading this... Lol! I get the reservations!
May have to clean the burner, mine had a mud nest in it lol
lookin' good! I did this 5 years ago to my gvr4 block but I had access to a caustic water jet blast machine.
26:13 I used to wetstone the face after i milled it. I wonder if they done the same. The surface looks spectacular. Nice a massive face mill. The little marks you can see, got a very big radius to it. Making precision easier.
If the face mill is slanted just a tiny bit. The bigger the mill is the less curvature effect it will have. I love a good maching job :D
Lapping. I'm pretty sure it's a combination of both because even with a perfect pitch and the right cutter you typically still see it. This one's too perfect. Not a bad thing by any measure.
Awe yeah love the details of your work
Great Monday. Thanks, Jafro!
My goal is to build a 4g54 for my conquest one day and use your 4g63 series as a order of operations :) I love how thorough this engine assembly is
B e a utiful! Thanks for sharing, Jafro.
Thanks guy...
I have become a better project finisher because of you my friend 😊
Take a pass through the cylinder bores with a white rag that has hand cleaner (Goop, etc) on it, the type that DOES NOT HAVE PUMICE IN IT. You will be surprised at how much more dirt you get out of a perfectly clean bore. It also seems to help the piston rings seat, for some reason (lanolin, maybe?). I got this tip from an old machine shop guy, it really does work well. You can use it on any machined surface, like the crank and cam bearing bores.
You are a wordsmith my friend.
Looks like next video we're going to get to see the lightweight knife-edged crank again. I remember the video when you received it and had it crack tested and balanced. I was there Gandalf, 3000 years ago
Neighbor: Howdy neighbor, doin a lobster?
Jaffro: Nope, a 4G63
Neighbor:

Neighbor: Well I'll see you later then.
A Monday even Garfield would like, is a Jafro monday.
I really like Rustoleum engine enamel in satin black.
That short block is cleaner than operating room of a hospital
Love seeing a good 6 bolt rebuild video, but I cringed when I saw how much junk came out of that oil gallery, mainly because I now know I probably left that in mine when I rebuilt it 😭
woohoo that your evo Jafro?! =)
That would be Matt! One of his. I don't have an evo yet, they're still too new for a guy like me. ;)
@@Jafromobile LOL fair enough =) also wanted to say thank u for all your videos, and eventho not on evos - i have learned so much from u and applied it to my own evo! all your vids are very much appreciated by me and i'm sure countless others.
People underestimate the power of hot but not boiling water and good old fashioned dish soap to clean engine bores.
I know! I'm trying to bring it back... The hard part is only the container. People think "iron+water=rust" and they're not wrong, but there's a right and wrong way to do it. I think it actually works better, but it does take longer.
glyptal the trashcan.
Want a cheap 30 or 55 gallon metal drum? Just look for a fabrication shop. Theyll have one you could probably just have or purchase cheap.
Meanwhile when im building engines "No i didnt trop it in dirt, grow up" proceedes to bolt dirty parts back on.
5-second rule...
I love your content mate.
44 gallon drums are the best for boiling blocks and engine parts
I wonder if wall insulation wrapped around the can would have helped it hold heat
It would according to Moonshiners'. Mark and Digger did that for their apple rye brandy. They insulated it with fire bricks. I thought the trash can was expensive... lol
as long as the safety valve is clamped open for safety....
It's a safety valve, so as long as you press the button, it's good!
@@Jafromobile Precisely. Glad someone else out there is on my level.
Get your hands on a 55 gallon drum for next time! No sealing required
Yeah man, I tried to find one, and around here without socialbook marketplace, I could have looked for weeks, waited weeks for shipping or spend a few days making a trash can seal. This was the price I paid for my impatience and what to expect for people like me who can't find a clean one that isn't rusted through.
On the bright side, the zinc fumes made you forget about the money spent at last for a little while 😂
in school (aviation) they told us never to use detergents when cleaning engine parts as the porous metal can become contaminated and cause oil foaming
19:27 "One in the main, one in the bore hole"...sounds like a girl I once knew. 😁
Everything reminds me of her...
The lack of tool marks on the machined surfaces is quite the surprise. Almost looks like it was ground back by sliding it around over a piece of abrasive paper glued onto a surface plate.
Ayyy looking good jafro
Time for you to get the vixen surface cleaner 1215 from across the pond. And go to town on for a better than new finish
Im pretty sure there has been no block in the history of Engines, thats been cleaned that well before assembly.
Besides maaaybbe some self built ones.
It's crazy how well hot water works, but the real cleaning happened before machining. I can't take responsibility for the guys that took it all the way down to its birthday suit. I need to find out what the process is because it restored everything it didn't remove. Worth every penny. There were a whole lot of pennies.
@ Thats like the liquids used in ultrasound cleaners.
When you have a real good cleaner for carbs its like the coca cola formula.
Nobody will tell -.-
Where are you getting all your parts that are not available anymore? Amayama? Thanks for posting all the part numbers and such.
30:00
Excuse my ignorance but core plugs .... Aren't they a sacrificial part that is supposed to pop out if something goes wrong ? Won't the sealant you used impede its ability to "pop" when necessary ?
I'd rather the head gasket go, really. "Freeze plugs" are coming out (if the water jacket freezes) whether or not they're glued in. This stuff is a better sealant than it is any sort of glue. Core plugs popping out of an otherwise working engine can usually be a real PITA to repair.
I respect what you're doing and it's really cool but at the same time some of your videos make me wonder how many people hit middle age without realizing the fact that life is short.
I under stand the challenge but 55 gallon drum would be a good idea.
Newline sells brand new stainless 55 gallon drums for $750!
@Jafromobile
I'm not sure if you have a dairy manufacturer near you, but you could see if they would give you one.
Normally, when they are done they throw them away. But steel , not stainless.
Good progress. I still watch some of the older videos as reminders on how to do stuff if I'm working on that item.
@ Yeah, I know stainless would be a GIANT and unnecessary luxury... I also don't use any social media other than RUclips which makes a lot of things like this harder to get for free. The dairy idea sounds like a great one, but I remember Curl's Neck Dairy used poly barrels instead of steel before they closed in 2022. That would have been my only hookup, but you know how that would have turned out... Search "what kind of plastic bag is that" if you don't.
@ You'd be surprised where you can score them. Car washes, restaurants, you name it! I turned a soap barrel and a veg oil barrel into my coolant and oil waste containers. $18 a piece!
@@Jafromobileairports with helicopter facilities will have access to used oil drums. The drums are steel, sealed, and the interior is coated with epoxy.
I've seen contractors plastic bags used in the can
I was kind of hoping for a 5 year series on how to polish the block 😢
Nice video
Love jafro
Is this the same block you applied that oil phobic surface to?
ok nvm im pretty sure its not. did you ever see a result with the oil coating?
@ We're all going to see it soon. When I was finally able to get one machined, I had all 3 machined. You're going to see so many assembly videos that y'all gon' be begging for Shootout and drag racing videos again.
@@Jafromobile so are you not boiling that one too? or is the coating you applied supposed to hold up to that sort of abuse? Its been so long since i saw that video I don't remember the finer details, but I guess I assumed back then it was already machined or forgot if you said it wasn't.
It was always an interesting experiment and I have always been curious about it.
Might do it to one of my engines if it's worth it.
Dude ive been watching you for 5 or 6 years...at the rate your going your gonna die before that engine/car will be ready for the track. Or virginia will gian its independence from america...there is a thing called to much prep and cleaning...dude..!!!
It's a real concern. You showed up right when I started looking for a machine shop at the beginning of a pandemic and the track here got sold. I hope the Commonwealth doesn't gain its independence. Especially not if it includes Northern VA. Sorry to the residents there, but no. I gotta get out of here, man.
Why are your main caps backwards
Did you just blued the block?
i've been in operating theatres that aren't cleaned as well
If my math is right I hope that's an ostrich fryer and not turkey.
Woooow
Отклинил так отклинил😂
Hurry please
Heard that!
I just went to good will an bought a big ass canning pot
THAT's how you do it. You seize the opportunity.
Now I listen to most videos at 1.5 speed, and there still slower than jafro
This one might hurt? There are a few spots where I was doing voiceovers between 3-4 am. I can hear it. Those parts wouldn't be too bad at 1.5... I might have to make daytime rules to fix my VO.
Flex seal.. lol
Jaaaaaaaaaaaaafro!
Been long Ken Xiong!
@ this one of my top channels. Been with you since the eclipse days. Learned so much from you! Thank you
"one in the main and one in the bore hole." You really couldn't help yourself could you?
Could of found a 50 gallon drum but whatever works I guess
I tried, man! The ONLY one I could find had been used as a burn barrel, rusty as frig, and would have left the block filthier than it was prior to being tanked and machined. There were others, but they were busy and full of things that couldn't be put anywhere else. In some places they're not easy commodities to attain.
@@Jafromobile I went on Facebook after making that comment and a few for sale but I suppose when you are in BFE things aren't as plentiful. I always valued your content and used some of your videos to learn how to lap vales and learned somethings from you so keep on truckin dude, also a 4 banger enthusiast but Ecotecs are my fetish.
@ Ecotec is this generation's 4g63. It's currently accessible like DSMs used to be. Good choice!
150k subs and couldn’t find a drum is crazy.
@ 150k subs and no other social media. I quit everything but this in 2011.
Could have just ysed red RTV.....
