Names in fantasy books can get frustrating, since you're reading them, and not hearing them. So how to you pronounce them when you've never actually heard them pronounced? Why, by using this handy primer! Pat himself pronounces some of the popular (and a few obscure) names in his Kingkiller books.

I laughed when Pat forgot a name of a place from his own book. This has happened to me on more than one occasion during revisions. "Wait, who was so-and-so's childhood friend again?"
I've watched this video so many times for the Kingkiller lore videos I make, and I still have trouble pronouncing Kvothe.

Well here in Spain "Ru" literally sounds like the english "Roo" so we all pronounce it correctly. We pronounce Edema wrongly, though
Well duh rhymes with huh and bruh, so standard English phonetics would dictate that Ruh should rhyme too, but he gets to decide since it's his world :)

King Raticus Corvolious yeah, I listened to the audio book, and that seems to be the only major thing they mispronounce. The Nick Podel also pronounces it as seal-dish.

NerdYoga My daughter’s middle name is Auri. Although in my head I pronounced it like Aura with an I.
I always thought that Auri was a name derived from Aurum, Latin for gold, as a reference to her hair or her personality. Granted, in the book it means "sunny" (or something similar), but I really liked my assumption.
Megane-kun well, in Portuguese, áureo derives from aurum and it means bright or in a tone of gold, golden. It is used in reference to the sun and good things so not far
In Portguese Auri is a name, but the pronunce is diferent, we pronunce ''AURÍ''
And I always wondered if it had anything to do with AURINKO - Finnish for sun.
But the pronunciation is vastly different so maybe it is a coincidence after all :)
Felipe Hinkel actually I used to pronunce the name just like the name in Portuguese (I speak Spanish, English and Brazilian Portuguese)
Could also refer to her alchemy. Also sounds a bit like Ariel from Little Mermaid since she collects junk.

"Fela" is the 3rd person singular present tense verb in spanish for "sucking dick". Latin root for "fellare". Congratulations!

Haha, as someone who read the books in german, i pronounced most things right because my pronounciation was german influenced (Edema Ruh as roo not ruh)

i literally just wrote a comment like that lol. i think some sounds really cool in german. like fela sounds much better and i also like auri and elodin in german a lot
I'm german but read them in english so I'm kinda pissed I got Alar with 2 open "A"s right, but he insinsts it's pronounced Ey-dem and Eydemre (Adem) or stuff like Lääänre.
He also says Anm-au-en with the AU like the german Umlaut, but Auri (which I pronounce they way it's written) according to him is Ori or Ari, I mean come ooooon, gimme some consistency Patrick
I also got Caeldish wrong (pronounced it "Kelldisch") but that mistake I can accept.
I read them in English but listened to the audio books in German. I prefer the German pronunciation for most of the names lol

I listened to the audio book as well. It's odd that there would be mispronunciations in there. Don't you think Pat consulted on the production?
Which one did you listen to, the British one or the American one?
I remember years ago listening to a book on tape for "The Hobbit" and they pronounced Gollum's name Gol-LOOM. I had to stop listening to it because it bugged me so much.
He says closer to the end that he "coached" Nick Podehl (American narrator) by recording a lot the words he'd need to be pronouncing. It seems like almost everything lines up with the audiobook... the only ones I've caught that are different in the American audiobook are Ceald/Cealdish and Devan. Podehl might have just misheard Pat with the Ceald stuff though, because Pat even told him that he wanted the Cealdish accent to be analogous to an Eastern European accent, which Podehl nails.
the only book on audible was read by a british actor Rupert Degas so i went off of those pronunciations and being Australian they meshed quite well with my way of speaking so i dont know if Pat would be offended by how i say them now or if he would be like 'no thats fine horses for courses' or some such :/ defs feels like my life is a lie now though.
I've pronounced all these names in Norwegian. Some where really close though. Fun hearing them pronounced! :)
omg my theory was correct, he lives right in the middle of newarre, which also seems similar to nowhere. now the strange thing is faerinial(the city of the story k tells to sim and will) is in the middle of nowhere. so kvothes inn is in faerinial

@@ainhoapg8702 You speak English very well. Don't worry about making small mistakes. I understood you perfectly! That's exactly how I feel. Noir because it means black, but really thinking of darkness. I think Kvothe is a villain, so that would make sense to me.
So... Lanre is actually a real name! It comes from the shortened Yoruba (Nigerian) male name Olanrewaju, which means "my wealth is the future" or something like that. Short forms of Yoruba names are almost always used in day-to-day language. It obviously wasn't intended but it is good to see some name representation from my continent :)
I actually really ended up liking the Devi character, despite her being such a hardass.

You really need to get in touch with the people who do the audio books, because a lot of these are gonna drive me insane when I give the series another listening.

Todos se confunden con la pronunciación de Kvothe. Hay quien le dice "Kuvote" siendo que en una parte del libro dice específicamente como se pronuncia jaja viva el español

Thank you! It's a sweet and nice when authors say "however YOU pronounce it is correct." No. If I'm asking, it's because I WANT to know how the author pronounces it. It might not matter towards understanding the story but it gives a comforting sense of depth.
Now every author who's ever used an apostrophe in a name must add a youtube video pronouncing it.

See, this is great for me (who has only ever heard the Audible pronunciations for these words and names) to learn how these nouns are spelled.
Seeing the spellings was VERY helpful and at one point made me feel very foolish. “Maer” Alveron..... is not the Mayor of a city....
Glad I watched this. Cleared up some of my questions as I’m mid book 2.
I have resorted to reading reviews and avoiding spoilers at all costs just to see whether the spelling I have visualized is correct. Sometimes, I just NEED to know.

I always think of Kvothe like "Quoth," as in; "Quoth the raven, 'Nevermore'"
since i'm german and my english wasn't great when i first read the books i pronounce a lot of the word german and i have to say it works quite well for some. i'm really fond of some of my old pronunciation and with some others i use either the ones mentioned in the video, or the ones used in the audiobooks.

I am an Indian and yes Devi is a Hindi and Sanskrit word and you pronounced it right. The meaning of the word is Divine or to be more exact Goddess.

I always thought Kvothe was phonetically similar to "Quothe" (like "Quothe the Raven?") And thought it was a pun given his trouper background.
It is. Maybe you are pronouncing quothe incorrectly?
lolaviola Quothe has a w sound, while Kvothe has a v. It’s still only one syllable, though.
I always pronounced fela like fayla. Fella an old slang word for boy.
I only read The Name of the Wind in 2019. Reading Wise Mans Fear now. This has been very helpful.
Just recently decided to download the first two books on audible so that I could listen to them while working. It would have been awesome if the readers had this list of pronunciations, or even if the second reader had listened to the first book lol. To us OCD types, it’s immensely frustrating hearing them pronounced different from one book to the next. 😂
Having listened to both books on audio I will always hear things pronounced that way! ie almost entirely wrong in every way 😂
Rothfuss is wrong about the pronunciation of Cealdish and that's all there is to it.
lol. Listening to this, all the Words sound very "American" ... I'm now doubting my own imagined versions sound fantasy-ish at all, and very English.
Although I did notice I put a few French inflections on some of the words.
MaverickMono yeah, I was putting a good few Irish twists onto the words (like "si" is pronounced "shee" and that sort of thing), but I think I'll just continue to do so, I don't think Pat could complain when his own main character does the same for his sword's name haha!

I generally pronounce everything as in Classical Latin, with the Cs and Gs always hard and the AEs like the word eye.

I like the names in your book, you managed to create unique but kinda familiar names. I have read the books in german and heard them in english. Auri with her Hair reminded me of gold, aurum, so I can't change my pronunciation anymore, hope its ok ;).
I love that I'm watching this even though I'm reading the first book in French which means that most of these prounounciations aren't how I or anyone French would read them, unless they have in mind that they are written by an English speaker.
Nick Pohdel always says "Seel-dish". I assume that's a no for that then?

I've lost count how many times I've listened to Name of the Wind, Wise Mans Fear and The Slow Regard of Silent things. Every single night I fall asleep listening to them, nothing else soothes me. I WILL get the books, it's just easier for me to listen.
The funny thing is that I didn't read the book but rather listened to the audiobook (Nick Podehl did amazingly with the reading by the way) so this was more of a learning of how the words were spelled for me - Needless to say, Edema Ruh surprised me as I always spelled it Adema Rue in my mind.

biggest surprises were (in my pronounciation) edEEma RAH, SEELdish, and aBENthy. it is nice to finally hear Kvothe's name right. i knew i was pronouncing it wrong, i just didnt know how lol
I thought Fela was pronnounced Feela... which i honestly like better so I'll keep pronouncing it that way haha

Lol Willem is an actual name in Dutch so that one always sounded like a normal every day life name because here in the netherlands it is. I also realised I say almost everything wrong😂😂

12:02: "Valeryan" is a type of steel from the Game of Thrones cycle and sounds a lot like the name which Mr. Rothfuss pronounces.
I thought he took Aleph, from borges book El Aleph. is a good coincidence since it also have a kind of mythical/ spiritual meaning.

Glad to know I was pronouncing most names right. Got the o in Kvothe right from Kote :). Main differences was Aa not Ay for all the A-names and -re as r-schwa (~ra).

Fun thing, as i cobble together my own story and names for nations, i somehow named one Faen. Imagined language somewhat alike french. Couple days later i read your books and the name felt very weird after that if not used for magical creatures :D got a fitting one now. lol
The peoples of Fillory in The Magicians book series are called Fillorian and pronounced about one letter (u vs. o) off from the Fellurian.
At the Brazilian version, Edema Ruh is Edena Ruh, with an N

I was pretty confused with it. I'm kinda dyslexic sometimes, I don't really have dyslexia, but I had read some names wrong for entity books and only catching it on the second time a read, I thought that happened with Edena, but I was confused because I ready the books 4 times.
"Willem & Simmon sound familiar because I wanted them to sound like real names". Yes, because they literally are. Those are two very common Dutch names.
I also knew Dutch girls named Devi (pronounced like the second pronunciation he gives for Devi)
I just realized that I pronounce edema ruh correctly because of my language (turkish) 'ruh' means spirit so we actually pronouncing it like 'edema spirits' and I think that's cool as hell. Thanks Pat.

Sorry, "Sith" is in the original Star Wars novelisation, 1976. They were first on that one.
Although Pat clearly based his fairies off Irish folklore, the Aos Sí, which was spelled Aes Sídhe in old Irish. Supernatural race of beings who you don't fuck with and who live in an invisible Otherworld. Familiar stuff.
Also Deoch who runs the Eolian is the noun for "drink" in Irish as he says it is in Yllish, pronounced kinda like "juck" (with more of a d sound at the start and/or more of a ch sound at the end depending on where you're from)
There's a few other bits and pieces in the story where I see Irish influence

In the German audiobook "Threpe" is indeed pronounced "Thrappy" and I think it's great because I always imagined the man to be a kind of goofy little person with a hat.
I like my pronunciation more. I know this is the author but I put a foreign spin on the words in my head. Like "Ademre" has a L3atin sound to it.
It's cool that for german readers pretty much of these names seem to be pronounced in the right way intuitively. They may have a bit of a german sound of course. But Edema Ruh, Felurian, Denna, Fela, Reshi, Cealdish and much more are very intuitively for german readers. But some of these names are horrible when spoken from a german speaker though :D

Devi is a charecter in Johnan Vasquez book JTHM, also known as the one who got away, so I thought it was common in the US. And Skarpi is a common name in Iceland or to be more excact it is a shorter version of Skarphéðinn, and Skarpur means sharp in Icelandic.

Wait. Wait hold on. Letantha? Wasn't that the path of the sword tree? Bast studied the path of the sword tree?
The sword tree is spelled LAtantha but I too am curious. A slip on Pat's part saying Bast or a hidden clue...
If this was not a misspeak and Bast actually practices the Latantha, the ramifications of this revelation could be ground shattering. I think that the Adem could be the Temerant descendants of “practicing” Amyr, of which Felurian said “mortal Amyr have never walked”, which means to me that the true Amyr were Fae and human Amyr where kind of “playing Amyr” by comparison (from the Fae perspective). Ergo, Bast is Amyr?

i doubt Pat will see this but i hope he does, i got into the books through audiobooks and i listen while at work or walking etc etc and the actor doing the reading (Rupert Degas) is pure brilliance and im just wondering if Pat has heard the reading, as he states a few names obviously change depending where your from,Rupert being British pronounces thing a little differently.
Being Australian i pronounce stuff different to the Brits and Americans, so just wondering if hes heard the work and is fine with the pronunciations varying slightly because i reallllly hope Rupert reads the third book aswell :) he is fantastic and is the best english voice acting i think ive ever heard.
You should listen to the version read by Nick Podehl. It's the audiobook I have and most are pronounced correct beside like 2 or 3 but the others are spot on.

Very interesting. I'm listening to the German audio book right now. Some names are pronounced your (intended) way, others are pronounced differently. Which makes sense since German sounds different than English and some words would sound really weird in a German sentence and German pronunciation is different than English pronunciation.
