So... Lanre is actually a real name! It comes from the shortened Yoruba (Nigerian) male name Olanrewaju, which means "my wealth is the future" or something like that. Short forms of Yoruba names are almost always used in day-to-day language. It obviously wasn't intended but it is good to see some name representation from my continent :)

I remember years ago listening to a book on tape for "The Hobbit" and they pronounced Gollum's name Gol-LOOM. I had to stop listening to it because it bugged me so much.
He says closer to the end that he "coached" Nick Podehl (American narrator) by recording a lot the words he'd need to be pronouncing. It seems like almost everything lines up with the audiobook... the only ones I've caught that are different in the American audiobook are Ceald/Cealdish and Devan. Podehl might have just misheard Pat with the Ceald stuff though, because Pat even told him that he wanted the Cealdish accent to be analogous to an Eastern European accent, which Podehl nails.
the only book on audible was read by a british actor Rupert Degas so i went off of those pronunciations and being Australian they meshed quite well with my way of speaking so i dont know if Pat would be offended by how i say them now or if he would be like 'no thats fine horses for courses' or some such :/ defs feels like my life is a lie now though.

Must remember, Pat is American, Pat is American, Pat is American. I'm pretty sure this is why I'm always wrong about names in fantasy books with leading vowels and things, and syllable stress, because I'm British. That long A at the start of Adem, Aleph etc. is just not what I would have thought at all. Although can't say I was at all surprised by Cealdish. I like that one, and always figured it was one of those words brought in from another language that people get wrong if they've only ever seen it written down. Even in-world, although they probably find it hard to go through life long enough to learn to read without hearing it mentioned judging by how people talk about Cealdish merchants and the like.
a-dem/a-leph as opposed to A-dem/A-leph? Yeah, vowel pronunciation is so different, that is literally a regional dialect difference. Saying A-dem just really doesn't flow for us Brits does it?
I just realized that I pronounce edema ruh correctly because of my language (turkish) 'ruh' means spirit so we actually pronouncing it like 'edema spirits' and I think that's cool as hell. Thanks Pat.
I was pretty confused with it. I'm kinda dyslexic sometimes, I don't really have dyslexia, but I had read some names wrong for entity books and only catching it on the second time a read, I thought that happened with Edena, but I was confused because I ready the books 4 times.
It's cool that for german readers pretty much of these names seem to be pronounced in the right way intuitively. They may have a bit of a german sound of course. But Edema Ruh, Felurian, Denna, Fela, Reshi, Cealdish and much more are very intuitively for german readers. But some of these names are horrible when spoken from a german speaker though :D
If this was not a misspeak and Bast actually practices the Latantha, the ramifications of this revelation could be ground shattering. I think that the Adem could be the Temerant descendants of “practicing” Amyr, of which Felurian said “mortal Amyr have never walked”, which means to me that the true Amyr were Fae and human Amyr where kind of “playing Amyr” by comparison (from the Fae perspective). Ergo, Bast is Amyr?
Devi is a charecter in Johnan Vasquez book JTHM, also known as the one who got away, so I thought it was common in the US. And Skarpi is a common name in Iceland or to be more excact it is a shorter version of Skarphéðinn, and Skarpur means sharp in Icelandic.
since i'm german and my english wasn't great when i first read the books i pronounce a lot of the word german and i have to say it works quite well for some. i'm really fond of some of my old pronunciation and with some others i use either the ones mentioned in the video, or the ones used in the audiobooks.
Although Pat clearly based his fairies off Irish folklore, the Aos Sí, which was spelled Aes Sídhe in old Irish. Supernatural race of beings who you don't fuck with and who live in an invisible Otherworld. Familiar stuff. Also Deoch who runs the Eolian is the noun for "drink" in Irish as he says it is in Yllish, pronounced kinda like "juck" (with more of a d sound at the start and/or more of a ch sound at the end depending on where you're from) There's a few other bits and pieces in the story where I see Irish influence
Lol Willem is an actual name in Dutch so that one always sounded like a normal every day life name because here in the netherlands it is. I also realised I say almost everything wrong😂😂
The reason why Willem sounds so much like a real name is because it is. It's an extremely common Duch name, our equivalent of William. I find this funny because a lot of the pronunciations (especially at the beginning of the video) make sense to me when you approach the word with an intuitive Dutch pronunciation. ANd KIst is Dutch for chest - exactly the same pronunciation too.
Valyrian, GoT, that’s why Felurian sounds so familiar. Willem is a very common name in The Netherlands. By the way, Kist is the Dutch word for chest (wooden box).

Just recently decided to download the first two books on audible so that I could listen to them while working. It would have been awesome if the readers had this list of pronunciations, or even if the second reader had listened to the first book lol. To us OCD types, it’s immensely frustrating hearing them pronounced different from one book to the next. 😂
Felurian sounded familiar to me as well, and I think Patrick's right by pointing out the similitude with Tinúviel. Not exactly similar to Galadriel, though, at least not to me. I have no idea what it's called in English, but there's this thing (called synérèse/diérèse in French) when you can pronounce it alternatively Fe-lu-rian/Ti-nú-viel or Fe-lu-ri-an/Ti-nú-vi-el.
i doubt Pat will see this but i hope he does, i got into the books through audiobooks and i listen while at work or walking etc etc and the actor doing the reading (Rupert Degas) is pure brilliance and im just wondering if Pat has heard the reading, as he states a few names obviously change depending where your from,Rupert being British pronounces thing a little differently. Being Australian i pronounce stuff different to the Brits and Americans, so just wondering if hes heard the work and is fine with the pronunciations varying slightly because i reallllly hope Rupert reads the third book aswell :) he is fantastic and is the best english voice acting i think ive ever heard.
You should listen to the version read by Nick Podehl. It's the audiobook I have and most are pronounced correct beside like 2 or 3 but the others are spot on.

I love that I'm watching this even though I'm reading the first book in French which means that most of these prounounciations aren't how I or anyone French would read them, unless they have in mind that they are written by an English speaker.

I've lost count how many times I've listened to Name of the Wind, Wise Mans Fear and The Slow Regard of Silent things. Every single night I fall asleep listening to them, nothing else soothes me. I WILL get the books, it's just easier for me to listen.

I am an Indian and yes Devi is a Hindi and Sanskrit word and you pronounced it right. The meaning of the word is Divine or to be more exact Goddess.
Kote was also "Disaster" in Caeldish right? I'm not the only one who picked up on that...?

I always thought Kvothe was phonetically similar to "Quothe" (like "Quothe the Raven?") And thought it was a pun given his trouper background.

In the German audiobook "Threpe" is indeed pronounced "Thrappy" and I think it's great because I always imagined the man to be a kind of goofy little person with a hat.
lol. Listening to this, all the Words sound very "American" ... I'm now doubting my own imagined versions sound fantasy-ish at all, and very English.
Although I did notice I put a few French inflections on some of the words.
MaverickMono yeah, I was putting a good few Irish twists onto the words (like "si" is pronounced "shee" and that sort of thing), but I think I'll just continue to do so, I don't think Pat could complain when his own main character does the same for his sword's name haha!

I generally pronounce everything as in Classical Latin, with the Cs and Gs always hard and the AEs like the word eye.
Ruh means "soul" in Turkish I thought it was translation when I read it for the first time, thinking as a soul gave me pleasure

Must remember, Pat is American, Pat is American, Pat is American. I'm pretty sure this is why I'm always wrong about names in fantasy books with leading vowels and things, and syllable stress, because I'm British. That long A at the start of Adem, Aleph etc. is just not what I would have thought at all.
Although can't say I was at all surprised by Cealdish. I like that one, and always figured it was one of those words brought in from another language that people get wrong if they've only ever seen it written down. Even in-world, although they probably find it hard to go through life long enough to learn to read without hearing it mentioned judging by how people talk about Cealdish merchants and the like.
a-dem/a-leph as opposed to A-dem/A-leph? Yeah, vowel pronunciation is so different, that is literally a regional dialect difference. Saying A-dem just really doesn't flow for us Brits does it?
But also, the audiobook pronounces it all differently because he's British (I prefer it)

The Hebrew Aleph is pronounced Ah-leph
I just realized that I pronounce edema ruh correctly because of my language (turkish) 'ruh' means spirit so we actually pronouncing it like 'edema spirits' and I think that's cool as hell. Thanks Pat.

I was pretty confused with it. I'm kinda dyslexic sometimes, I don't really have dyslexia, but I had read some names wrong for entity books and only catching it on the second time a read, I thought that happened with Edena, but I was confused because I ready the books 4 times.
Just started this series and this helped a lot.
It's cool that for german readers pretty much of these names seem to be pronounced in the right way intuitively. They may have a bit of a german sound of course. But Edema Ruh, Felurian, Denna, Fela, Reshi, Cealdish and much more are very intuitively for german readers. But some of these names are horrible when spoken from a german speaker though :D

Wait. Wait hold on. Letantha? Wasn't that the path of the sword tree? Bast studied the path of the sword tree?
The sword tree is spelled LAtantha but I too am curious. A slip on Pat's part saying Bast or a hidden clue...
If this was not a misspeak and Bast actually practices the Latantha, the ramifications of this revelation could be ground shattering. I think that the Adem could be the Temerant descendants of “practicing” Amyr, of which Felurian said “mortal Amyr have never walked”, which means to me that the true Amyr were Fae and human Amyr where kind of “playing Amyr” by comparison (from the Fae perspective). Ergo, Bast is Amyr?
Devi is a charecter in Johnan Vasquez book JTHM, also known as the one who got away, so I thought it was common in the US. And Skarpi is a common name in Iceland or to be more excact it is a shorter version of Skarphéðinn, and Skarpur means sharp in Icelandic.
I always pronounced fela like fayla. Fella an old slang word for boy.

since i'm german and my english wasn't great when i first read the books i pronounce a lot of the word german and i have to say it works quite well for some. i'm really fond of some of my old pronunciation and with some others i use either the ones mentioned in the video, or the ones used in the audiobooks.
Sorry, "Sith" is in the original Star Wars novelisation, 1976. They were first on that one.
Although Pat clearly based his fairies off Irish folklore, the Aos Sí, which was spelled Aes Sídhe in old Irish. Supernatural race of beings who you don't fuck with and who live in an invisible Otherworld. Familiar stuff.
Also Deoch who runs the Eolian is the noun for "drink" in Irish as he says it is in Yllish, pronounced kinda like "juck" (with more of a d sound at the start and/or more of a ch sound at the end depending on where you're from)
There's a few other bits and pieces in the story where I see Irish influence

Lol Willem is an actual name in Dutch so that one always sounded like a normal every day life name because here in the netherlands it is. I also realised I say almost everything wrong😂😂
The reason why Willem sounds so much like a real name is because it is. It's an extremely common Duch name, our equivalent of William. I find this funny because a lot of the pronunciations (especially at the beginning of the video) make sense to me when you approach the word with an intuitive Dutch pronunciation.
ANd KIst is Dutch for chest - exactly the same pronunciation too.

Valyrian, GoT, that’s why Felurian sounds so familiar. Willem is a very common name in The Netherlands. By the way, Kist is the Dutch word for chest (wooden box).

The peoples of Fillory in The Magicians book series are called Fillorian and pronounced about one letter (u vs. o) off from the Fellurian.
Having listened to both books on audio I will always hear things pronounced that way! ie almost entirely wrong in every way 😂
Rothfuss is wrong about the pronunciation of Cealdish and that's all there is to it.
Just recently decided to download the first two books on audible so that I could listen to them while working. It would have been awesome if the readers had this list of pronunciations, or even if the second reader had listened to the first book lol. To us OCD types, it’s immensely frustrating hearing them pronounced different from one book to the next. 😂

Not exactly similar to Galadriel, though, at least not to me.
I have no idea what it's called in English, but there's this thing (called synérèse/diérèse in French) when you can pronounce it alternatively Fe-lu-rian/Ti-nú-viel or Fe-lu-ri-an/Ti-nú-vi-el.
i doubt Pat will see this but i hope he does, i got into the books through audiobooks and i listen while at work or walking etc etc and the actor doing the reading (Rupert Degas) is pure brilliance and im just wondering if Pat has heard the reading, as he states a few names obviously change depending where your from,Rupert being British pronounces thing a little differently.
Being Australian i pronounce stuff different to the Brits and Americans, so just wondering if hes heard the work and is fine with the pronunciations varying slightly because i reallllly hope Rupert reads the third book aswell :) he is fantastic and is the best english voice acting i think ive ever heard.
You should listen to the version read by Nick Podehl. It's the audiobook I have and most are pronounced correct beside like 2 or 3 but the others are spot on.
biggest surprises were (in my pronounciation) edEEma RAH, SEELdish, and aBENthy. it is nice to finally hear Kvothe's name right. i knew i was pronouncing it wrong, i just didnt know how lol

Or, Letantha is the original Fae spelling because it is the martial art of the Amyr which were all originally Fae, and Latantha is the current spelling, changed over time just like the Lackless name and so many other words that shift over time?
The funny thing is that I didn't read the book but rather listened to the audiobook (Nick Podehl did amazingly with the reading by the way) so this was more of a learning of how the words were spelled for me - Needless to say, Edema Ruh surprised me as I always spelled it Adema Rue in my mind.

I like my pronunciation more. I know this is the author but I put a foreign spin on the words in my head. Like "Ademre" has a L3atin sound to it.

Actually we have several names here in Georgia. Devi is boy's name here (they appear in our mythology). Kote is our version of Constantine (pronounced differently)
