      here it is, a point of interest. perhaps you can dig on this for us. abenthy teaches the young man about the heart of stone, however i dont remember any mention of this at the university, by other students, and also the teachers possess a lack of mentioning it as well. infact im not sure he mentions it to even wil and sim when he is using it during the crafting of his graham. Although i can remember him describing spinning leaf to someone, and it deserved mention as to how they responded, however, im not certain as of how exactly this came about. now, also to mention, he said he was so used to it being active, he forgot it was. and that it felt odd having released it. im thinking there is something more to this. am i wrong, is the heart of stone publicly known at the university. perhaps its stuck now at the inn, perhaps its why he cant use his powers. far stretch, and i know im reaching, but other than it affording him a long stretch of won duels, what else is it good for. (obvious bait, i have many uses for this in mind) since im in a sharing mood i may also adress this in this comment. there are three silences, and one of those are his. yet him and bast talk to each other three times when they want to be heard. brother, this is pure gold, dig it up. AND WHERE IS BOOK 3 OMG!!!! i know your not pat but seriously, im getting old. i was your age when i first read this.......... i think the ctheah has some learning to do, as this was a treatise of leading on a path.

      Captured in Words i think that Cinder cut the Kathae to make the box to hide whatever is inside from Helliax, it says that he did him a bad turn once and that's really the only thing we know that happened between them

    • @jhonnylacksville6765
      @jhonnylacksville6765 4 года назад

      @Amail Someoneeveryone I remember something later when there is mention that his father crawled to his mother, was this mention from the cthea, perhaps not but if so that makes it slightly true. However I was considering the troop to be Chan Dr Ian, for a time. Trip has a knack, he throws sevens. Sevens, mind you. Demon signs. Perhaps they took kvothe from his real parents and tried to set him free. But no, the narrator kote confirms their death. Although it is curious why the seven let the boy live. Leads me back to think about the song if seven sorrows, what if the seven really are the good guys, what if this one eyed selitos was just cracked, and over reacted, blaming lanre for the fall of the cities.

    • @jhonnylacksville6765
      @jhonnylacksville6765 4 года назад

      @Amail Someoneeveryone I'll add, something scared them off. Also the one of the seven in eld vintas looks up right before the lightning. tehlu save us all. Now as a point of interest, eldrich, or eld rice, means faerie kingdom. Or strange realm. Look at etymology of eldrich. Eld vintas is where he made his way into the fae. Also felurian confirms there is no human amir. Let me add that the adem are following the lethany which could translate to the better good. What does kvothe bring back from the sword tree. The bloody hand of amir. Adema rue, ademre.

    Encanis was trapped in an iron wheel where he can not lie. Cthaeh seems like he is trapped too, in a tree where he can not lie. Encanis tried to "bite" Tehlu. Felurian checked if Cthaeh have bitten Kvothe. Encanis is the worst demon and he is full of anger and evil. Cthaeh seems the same.
    Too many people think that Encanis is Haliax because he bring the those signals and the shadow, but Haliax is not sealed as Encanis, he is free.

      @CapturedInWords  4 года назад +44

      Yess great points! This is actually one of the big theories I'll talk about in next weeks video, as the Cthaeh being Encanis is probably the most logical theory in my opinion and it's the one that i believe. There's many theories that Cthaeh is Selitos which also has some good clues to back it up, but I like the Encanis theory most. It fits with the Garden of Eden reference as well, since Encanis is pretty much the devil. In next weeks video I'll also be talking more about the bite of the cthaeh and how Bast mentions it is 'contagious'.

    • @nadie7480
      @nadie7480 4 года назад +14

      @@CapturedInWords Selitos may be the Cthaeh, aswell. Every stories are part of the same story, telled by other point of view. Maybe the Cthaeh is just the Cthaeh and no more, or maybe he is Encanis, Selitos or even both.
      Maybe Encanis is Iax. Iax would be the real enemy in every story. The beast (Skarpi), Encanis (Trapis), the enemy (Shehyn)...
      Encanis was the strongest demon, said Trapis, and Iax was the stronger shaper, said Felurian, and we can be absolutely sure that Encanis was a shaped "demon". Encanis mentioned that he shaped to himself, which is forbidden by the Path of "Tehlu" (he was not Tehlu, actually, it's a palimpsest), or knowers, who won the Creation War. If this theory is right, Encanis can not be the Cthaeh because we know that Iax spoke to the Cthaeh, and nobody talk to himself this way.
      I wonder who is the actual enemy of this chronicle. Lanre, Selitos, Iax or the Cthaeh.

    Here’s my theory on why the Sithe missed Kvothe:
    The Cthaeh knew all possibilities and would choose the worse outcome. It’s possible that since time itself and the Cthaeh was born, the Cthaeh already knew the endgame. It is not multiple worse outcomes that it chooses for each people that had came in contact with it over the eons, but just ONE worse outcome. All the victims were just pieces of the puzzle that would eventually lead to one ending the Cthaeh sought after. The moment the first person came in contact with the Cthaeh, it was already over. The Sithe, the Creation War, the Fasting War, the Candrian, Kvothe, they were all part of the mechanization of the Cthaeh master plan. The Sithe thinks that only by talking to the Cthaeh, it would lead to one devastation, but every contact that came before, as well as all the tragedies that came with it, were just a step of the Cthaeh’s plan since the first contact. The Sithe exists because the Cthaeh expected them to. It expected them to “intervened” those that sought it, but really, it was just another important step for it to get what it wants. Eventually, it knew and expected them to get distracted and lead Kvothe to meet the Cthaeh. To the Cthaeh, Kvothe is just another push over to bring it to the next phase of its plan.
    All this time, there wasn’t multiple devastations caused by the Cthaeh, there had only been ONE, and it’s currently in motion, with Kvothe somehow being the last piece the Cthaeh needed. After all, Patrick Rothfuss said that The Kingkiller Chronicle is the prologue series to something bigger.

    Kvothe didn't just swear on the ever moving moon but by his name and his power. By this we can assume that he does break this promise to Denna and seek to find who her patron is. And if his oath in this world is as powerful as i think, then he must change his name to something else.

  • @ChairmanSteel
    @ChairmanSteel 4 года назад +19

    One of the best fantasy monsters ever. It sets up a really interesting opportunity to explore the question of free will. If Kvothe doesn't have free will, talking to the Cthaeh didn't change anything, and the conversation was just an event that happened in his pre-scripted destiny. It he does have free will, he should be able to ignore its words or resist the urges it created in him. Except if it can truly see all possible timelines, whatever he tries to do to resist it will be what it wanted - hiding in an inn means he's not becoming a hero who can save the world and prevent further suffering and death, for instance. But if that's the case, then he doesn't truly have free will - his future has been foreseen and there's nothing he can do to escape it.

      Well but Denna wrote that song in the end praising Lanre, the leader of the chandrian, and the amyr are still hunting the chandrian so if she’s being trained it isn’t to become an amyr I don’t think. And another thing I remember the Cthaeh saying was that her patron is trying to see how far he could push her with the abuse before she runs away, and then will lure her back with sweet words and promises again. That really doesn’t make it seem like he’s training her in combat.

    • @alistairmacrae4993
      @alistairmacrae4993 4 года назад +3

      Doesn’t hold water to me.
      More likely is that Denna’s patron is the opposite and is in league with the Chandrian.
      I can imagine it playing out that Denna gets more and more closely tied to the Chandrian and that Kvothe ends up working out away to get her out of it. However because of her now perceived association with the Chandrian she is targeted by the Amyr.
      There’s the story about Kvothe having to trick a daemon to get his hearts desire and had fight an angel to keep it.
      Chronicler looks at Kvothe and thinks this is the face of a man who has killed an Angel.
      Kvothe says I have killed men and things that were more than men, and every single one deserved it.
      The Amyr are already painted as brutal and heavy handed. Whatever one did to Denna it angered Kvothe so much that he would kill over it and would still feel justified for doing it years later.
      I’m talking the real Amyr not the human group.
      I also think that Tehlu is one of the real Amyr and that Kvothe has met and spoken with him which would explain what he means when he says that he has spoken with gods.

    I've heard several theories linking Denna's patron to Braden & Cinder. Denna's patron could be one or the other, but not both I think. I think it's incredibly unlikely that Cinder is Braden.
    First, when Kvothe runs into Cinder in the Eld, he can't see his face, but his mere presence is enough to send chills down his spine. Everyone involved seemed to know something was up with the bandit leader. There is no similar feeling when Braden shows up.
    Second, while we don't know Cinder's sign (maybe we do) there isn't any mention of weird phenomena happening when Kvothe and Braden play Tak together.
    Finally, it doesn't seem right. Braden is in the Maer's court and I doubt a Chandrian's presence would go unnoticed ... idk

Imagine being an author like Patrick Rothfuss and how many drafts you must go through to write a book not only as beautiful as these ones, but also select language so carefully to laden it with hints to fuel the theories we love (in more than just the English language). He works constantly with his charity- worldbuilders, and has many more projects than just King killer chronicle.
      It's one thing to disagree with how he's managed his time- that's fine. Think about him seeing this video and appreciating the love people have for his work then he reads your comment calling him fat and lazy to the point hell have a heart attack. Be more careful with your words, please.

However, Pat is probably already tired of working too much in one story. He is risking his book and his first ideas to not old well within our fast-pace changing society. Nevertheles, this is offensive to the author, he may be depressed. And his depression may be linked to his never perfect conclusion.

      I implied that I want this for an educational purpose for him.

      Or wanting someone to get treated badly for educational purposes.
      If he can realise what kind of human he is, without any negative impact by others (of anykind) I am all for it.
      Given how he reacted in the first place, it is a fair assumption that that is highly unrealistic.
      The insults you call out, are all founded on the things he stated by himself, they are not without any basis.
      I said that he is not intelligent.
      Based on the fact that he insulted without reason in the first place and he said that he could not even read (or be bothered to read) more than 5 sentences.
      He embraces his ignorance
      I proclaimed him to be toxic because he was toxic.
      And he had the urge to insult on no basis whatsoever, that for me implies a despicable person.
      I say, every action forces a reaction.
      I understand what kind of point you are trying to make but he had no basis for his reaction, I had one for mine.
      I am not a person to randomly insult on the internet.
      I still have the feeling that it was completly justified.
      And I had the feeling that if there was any chance that an internet comment would make a difference in this persons life, it would need to be a bit harsh.
      I felt that i needed to react to such a blatantly hostile message.
      So in conclusion, I don't think that I need to work on my self,
      1. because i can admit to faults

    There's a scene between Kvothe and Bredon where Kvothe is saying he's almost beaten Bredon, and he'll get him next time. And Bredon becomes very firm and says "No, you aren't." and proceeds to BEAT HIM mercilessly on the Tak board multiple games in a row, viciously. Like he is beating her as winning against her, and it is a game.
    For the walking stick he used, maybe he just used a new walking stick 2 days ago, literally, to walk.
    And for the welts under her clothes, it could be anything, the Cthaeh does not explicitly says her patron inflicted those welts.
    And the "bruises down to the bone" could be anything, it could figuratively refer to deep wounds in Denna's mind, like troubling things that have happened to her in the past.
    But she may admit in the book that her patron literally hits her though, I don't remember quite well...

  • @Voxdalian

    I actually think the Cthaeh isn't evil, it's just very bored because of its immortality and does everything in its power to amuse itself. Action is entertainment, so war is the entertainment for immortals. And because of its practical omniscience it also has a very different sense of morality. It can see the sixth dimension, which is something humans (and fae) cannot even comprehend, which means its understanding of everything is completely different from ours. Keeping it away from everyone is a good idea, but just because it's dangerous doesn't mean it's evil. And it might be a wholly false assumption that it tries to get the worst outcome, maybe it's trying to get the best, but great progress requires great sacrifice, or something like that.

      @@nadie7480 I'm of the opinion that "evil" is bad writing.
      Nothing on history has ever been "evil", everyone always has a reason for their behaviour and thought it was justified. If they didn't they wouldn't have done it. If a character from a book (even an immortal omniscient tree) is evil with no justification that means the author doesn't know what they're doing, I doubt that's the case for Rothfuss.

  • @TimTYT
    @TimTYT 4 года назад +4

    Why does everyone always act as though we could rely on what Bast said about the Cthaeh? How would anyone even know the Cthaeh's abilities? Did they ask it? Would it tell the truth? How would you test it's knowledge of ALL future?
    Also from a meta perspective an all knowing, all powerful being would just ruin any story. And if it were all that, then it would be idiotic to only introduce it after being halfway through the story. If the Cthaeh had manipulated events for millennia and there wasn't any way around it, then we simply wouldn't have a story. It would be the equivalent of saying "...and then everyone died. The end."
    Kvothe said his story were a tragedy, but that was just his assessment. An assessment he made while suffering from some kind of depression, so we can't take it as commentary on the overall narrative. Perhaps his backstory is a tragedy, but obviously there's also stuff happening in the "present", while he tells his tale, so the overarching story hasn't reached it's conclusion yet. Imagine the series would end with Kvothe saying: "ok so that's it. Bb Chronicler. I'ma go die now." and then he leaves and dies.
    The narrative simply isn't structured like a tragedy. If it were just about how Kvothe managed to screw up his life, we wouldn't even need the framing story. There's an implicit promise at the beginning of the story, really at the beginning of any story, that what's about to happen will matter in some way and if things ended just as bleakly as they currently appear, then the telling of the story wouldn't have mattered.

      It didn't finish talking to him, I'm assuming it knows the future but say it knows all of who it sees, not kvothes father though. Remember kvothes mother was a whore, so you could never know the true limits of the oracles abilities. Like maybe the oracle didnt know kvothes father was a fae. That would explain kvothes magical affinity and how he snook past 5 godly fae archers that guard the oracle. Twice.

      Bast says anyone whi gets close gets killed, anyone who makes it out gets killed. Therefore kvothe got past the 5 archers 2 times. Even the oracle didn't see that coming, if kvothe has the ability to overcome fae abilities then I'm assuming it works on the Oracle as well

    Tbh i think cinder being dena's patron is a bit of a bad theory. It only works if you ignore all the painstaking lore and tension put into the books and story telling. In order for Cinder to be the patron he would almost have to be eliminated in a single chapter based on the pace of story telling.
    It's possible. But I find it much more likely that Dena is a Chandrian especially considering the story told of their origin.
    She fits almost perfectly the story of an immortal being, born of sin, who is desperately trying to find a way towards redemption.
