- Hi guys, Tech James here,
PlayStation 2 ELF files running on the PS Vita! The PSVita doesn’t have nearly enough power to emulate the PlayStation 2 with playable performance. However, Xerpi has gone ahead to do the unthinkable and managed to port a PlayStation 2 emulator called ‘Play!‘ to the Vita!

I think the problem with emulator production is that developers and the community want the games to maintain graphical fidelity. So the games end up struggling to run, when in my opinion they should implement vigorous texture and resolution downgrading features so the games will definitely play. For me games are more about the experience and not the visuals.

@home9dog2blue that's a silly thing to say. We absolutely were concerned with graphics. I remember being in awe at the graphics in final fantasy X. I remember being in awe with pretty much every single console generation. I think graphics get a bad rep for devs prioritizing them over gameplay but graphics have always been awe-inspiring and a major pull into many video games of my youth. Witnessing videos games going from flat pixelated world's to insanely detailed 3 dimensional world's is one of the coolest things about growing up playing video games in 90s to now. Immersion is a key factor in enjoyment for me and graphics that pulled me in did a great deal for immersion. The problem is gameplay was tossed to the side in many AAA games which is where people get this narrative that graphics don't matter when they absolutely do. In terms of playing old retro games I'd much rather play them how I remember them and not some chopped up version when I could just play it on a system that won't chop it up. It's not that those games weren't meant to be on uhd, even though that true, it's that our imaginations made up for the flaws and made the graphics life like back in those days. Sounds like you were probably already in your late teens by the time PS1 or PS2 came around cause playing those games as a kid, the graphics would be hyped asf.
Visuals are part of the experience.

Next to that if everyone only cared about graphics they probably wouldn't have made this emulator. You don't just code and create an entire program only to prove you can play. There are a lot of people who defenately did not care about graphics and just wanted ps2 on the go

The PS2 is both a powerful and complicated platform, because of the former it makes low level emulation difficult, and because of the later it makes high level emulation difficult. So I don't know if we'll ever see robust PS2 emulation on the Vita, but boy wouldn't it be wonderful if we did!

This is a really cool proof of concept, but I highly doubt this can ever be taken to a playable state if something so basic barely runs well. I’m definitely keeping watch for further news though, and I will jump for joy if I’m proven wrong.
The thought of playing classics like Silent Hill 3 portably makes me giddy, but I’m not putting my hopes up, lol

This did look like a massive april fools joke and I know I'm late but Xerpi pronounced (Ser-pe) has been working on porting other titles but the going is slow. The PS vita's hardware is very similar and the ELF file launching is actually native given the arm processor but optimizing and the like as well as jobs or whatever. I know only they are working on other projects as well like linux on the vita so this progress might have slowed but really I don't know much other than... see? it's possible!
I hope everything goes well with the emulator, I would love to play some ps 2 games on my Vita.

I'm really hoping they could manage to run a perfect ps 2 emulator on Vita. Vita is a fantastic console,and the library of ps 2 games are great.

@@bryanamorganda5880 it's not possible. The hardware of the vita isn't strong enough to run a "perfect" ps2 emulator. It would be cool if it WAS possible, though

Seeing that the PS Vita is a more powerful system than the PS2 & even having some HD Collections from PS2 games. I won't be surprise to see a PS2 emulator on the Vita. Which this actually gets me excited to play PS2 on the go.

it is actually pretty possible, back in 2008 i had resident evil 4 on psp, it was given to me by a japanese person who ported it to the psp, it wasn't running exactly smooth but it was playable, if i could fix my psp, i will upload the game file and link it here,

Put the gamecube version on a WiiU. That's what I did. I'm currently playing through NFSU2 on mine!

I got a jailbroken PS3 slim. But i wish i could play it on portable devices.
Everything is possible on a Vita! You just have to make things easier to for the handheld to run it. People are insane (in a good way)

Если это все так, то вполне возможно игры региона pal, при замедлении процессора, и его разгона, будут выдавать максимальное количество кадров... Мне лично главное чтобы resident evil outbreak шла.) Hey techJames can you make a video on how to get 1080p on our fat PS2? I've seen some videos but I can't understand them. Your straight forward and don't spend 20 minutes babbling on and on so I would greatly appreciate it friend.

After 3 years I have an idea to improve PS2 emulation on the PS Vita:
The trick will be to use the PSP Hardware; by using the Allegrex at 36.864 MHz, the Vita CPU will no longer have to emulate the I/O Processor and the accuracy will be near perfect. The second core can be used for something else too but at 36.864 MHz I wonder what.
Of course that's not enough to play PS2 games at full speed on the Vita as the CPU will still have to emulates the EE VUs GS SPU2 and more.
An alternate solution will be to use the Allegrex at full speed to emulate something more demanding with its two cores and keep the Vita CPU emulating the I/O Processor. But say good bye to the battery.
In a better world we could use the Media Engine to simulate the I/O Processor and the Allegrex to emulates something else (the VUs or Graphic Synthesizer ?) but unfortunately the Vita semi-emulates the Media Engine IIRC.
And also don't forget that Play! is more optimized today so an update may also help a little.
HOLY FRICK!!! A new possibility of emulation on the Vita. The implications of this are awesome granted the Vita isn't quite powerful enough to run PS2 games. HOWEVER, unless Sony does the unthinkable, which I highly doubt they will even though they only stand to gain from it, and make the PS5 backwards compatible with console games back to the PS1 like the rumors that were going around at the start of the year were speculating. If Sony did that, it would put them way ahead of the pack for the next console generation just based on that alone since maintaining retro consoles brings diminishing returns due to parts scarcity. One can hope...
I honestly think that with some optimization at least some simple 2d games can be ported to the vita.I bet that the vita have enough power to at least run some VN and there are tons of them on ps2, but unfortunately most of them untranslated (I'm still hoping for Amagami but it's safe to say that it's dead at this point).

they should create some plugins for ps2 emulator especially the "overclock" plugin.
Yeah, if this is ever going to be playable, a lot of work is going to have to be done.
Even then, there will be games that just won't work at all.
It's a nice proof of concept though!
I guess the only way for it to work is by convert ps2 game 'ISO' into VPK by using special tool converter.

3 years later....i just hacked my PSVita. Has there been any success? I'd love to run shadow of the colossus on my vita.
Looks interesting, but the only way right now (and probably also in the future) to play ps2 on vita is streaming pcsx2 to the vita via moonlight. I have just finished persona 3 fes with controllable party members and widescreen patch on the vita and appart from a few minor connection drops while i was at work it was a great experience.

i think this will depend on the game 2D titles may run on the vita but 3D depending on the games Mostly unlikely unless the emulator can dumb down the graphics even thin it will still be slow,that doesn't mean no one should try it

I saw the announcement a couple days ago on r/Vitahacks. It's a great proof of concept and makes me very hopeful since the ps2 games I want to play on my vita are:
-Soul Nomad and the World Eaters
-Atelier Iris: Eternal Mana
-Atelier Iris 2: Azoth of Destiny
-Atelier Iris 3: Grand Phantasm

Yo. I know I'm real late to the conversation - Prank or not ;but I've recently acquired a psTV - Overclocked it and I'm also running vita grafix to run games smoother and faster than before. I'm not the brightest when it comes to this stuff but that means it was a conscious decision to nerf the Vitas power for some odd reason right..? - I have also used trash android phones here in South Africa to emulate ps2(although not the smoothest - 28fps)

The PS Vita was kept at a 333mhz default since it needs to last since it runs on a battery. But the PS TV obviously doesn't, so not sure why 500mhz wasn't the default.

Keep in mind play! Emulator even on high end PCs wont run games at full speed due to it being on alpha games that will run full speed on pcsx2 on the same device will not run full speed on play!

The unity port of San Andreas is already somewhat playable on the vita
Malfattio that’s even because unity is a modern engine, games running on emotion engine need a lot of work. Emulation tho is possible but there has to be some resource sacrifice and asset trimming when the are unnecessary
Likely nothing will come of this but it's still very cool that they did it at all.

Sony killing the Vita has only boosted the scene, even though the Vita would never be able to run an actual ps2 game at full speed (minus official ports like persona games.) It's still a huge advancement and makes me happy I bought a Vita back when things were more dormant.

Imagine if it could.. guranteed they could bring vita back and sell millions again. I think many wanted this at first too. Yet another reason to buy one for some and await the ps2 on it. Sadly yes it never came.
But i do wonder...how optimized are the ps2 porta of games like jak and daxter and sly cooper? How were those games ported exactly? Can their vita files be used as a base to port over some other ps2 game? And im not saying anything high profile but at least to try some basic games but port them as s vita title using the vita ps2 ported games. Would be neat to see

I for one want to play Wipeout Fusion on my Vita, that's the only Wipeout for PS2, and with that I could have the entirety of the Wipeout series (minus HD Fury/Omega Collection) on the Vita
