ScannerDanner got it Paul. Not wanting to do another evap repair turned into an epic Hyundai lesson. Hopefully everyone who catches the first video watches all parts. It’s a great story.
I once had a mil with a codepo449 (I think) on a 09 Silverado. He changed a purge valve, and no fix! I got into it, and tested the vent valve, and it was intermittent, so we replaced that!! The money light came right back on, so I went back to read the code. As I was looking at some live data (smaller handheld code reader, with some live data) I witnessed a purge. As it stopped, the tank pressure reading didn’t return back to absolute zero! I removed the cap, and still not to zero. It was just not there, like 6in of water, or the like! The pressure and vacuum did respond, and reacted correctly, but just out of range on zero! I replaced the tank pressure sensor, which fixed the problem! The problem was the sensor zeroing! It was something like -250 in of water, to+250 in of water, in a range!! Since the sensor didn’t return to zero, it was a tick too much positive pressure, looking like the system didn’t vent properly. It responded to tests, and to the reaction of the working system, it just didn’t show zero, when it was zero. It was just a touch positive, at zero, telling my system that it didn’t properly vent!! Since the sensor was only positive to 6 in of water, it didn’t show out of range, and it did act appropriately to vacuum and pressure. My point is that just what Danner suggested!! New don’t mean working!! Or, working don’t mean working CORRECTLY!! It’s crucial to know what the info means, and what info is looked at, and what the info needs to be! In my case, the sensor reacted to pressure, it reacted to vacuum, but it was not in a recognizable range, so the pcm could understand its meaning!!

This video saved me $$$. I had the same exact issue P0455 Large Evap Leak. Bought a new gas cap, cleared the codes and checked all the evap lines. I eventually gave up and brought it to a mechanic to find the "large" leak. The mechanical ran a smoke test, exactly as you had done in your video and they couldn't find the leak. When they activated the purge valve and vent solenoid they both clicked. He noticed the purge valve looked new and asked me if I had replaced it, which I did myself two years ago with an aftermarket purge valve. He looked puzzled and said, "that can't be it then." He cleared the codes and told me to see if it would pop up again. 50 miles later the light popped up to my great frustration. “ScannerDanner parts changer” hahahahahahaha. hilarious!! at least I learned something today. I never work evap leak code yet. I’m actually avoiding it because it look hard. I just need smoke machine. My mom have a 2012 Ford Fusion. She have evap code (have it for years) . Older (2010-2012) Ford Fusion known for bad fuel filler neck pipe. We live in Mississippi. No inspection test for us lol.
After watching this through part 2, I feel your frustration about shitty aftermarket parts. I did a complete brake job with hydraulics on a 1998 Accord EX back in 2017, using aftermarket (Centric) parts. A few months later she called and stated the red brake warning light was on on the dash, and that the fluid was very low, and there was a puddle under the driver's front area. I had her get it towed in due to safety concerns, and determined that the master cylinder sprung a leak. No problem, just warranty the master cylinder...... 4 times total over 18 months! I even paid for a different aftermarket brand on the last one, but it only lasted 2 or 3 months! All of them leaked between the reservoir and main body of the master cylinder in the same spot!! I bought one from Honda, put it on, and there has never been any more problem since. A few months later, the starter went out. She demanded an original Honda starter, even though it cost over double an aftermarket part. This is just one of dozens of crappy parts I've been frustrated by over the past 10 or so years! In some cases, the situation is reversed! I no longer use Motorcraft starters or A/C compressors due to early failures! This is only one of many experiences where crap parts have made me consider going into the ministry! ;)
21:11 If there's a check valve in the filler neck, that's crazy. If there's any pressure in the enclosed system and you start to top off the tank with fuel, that pressure will immediately vent up the filler neck when you start pouring fuel. IRL that will only occur if you are topping off the tank without having just driven the car (to give the enclosed system an opportunity to reduce any pressure (due to thermal volumetric expansion of the fuel) to a slight vacuum via the emissions system). But if you're at home, decanting fuel into the filler from a gas can, you could get a bit of a fuel blow-back from the air rushing out of the tank.
Ha! I was wondering why you were doing another evap system leak after that Honda evap video you did where the leak was so small that you couldn't see any smoke. I remember you saying something in that video along the lines of: "I HATE evap systems... this will be the LAST evap system I ever do!"
I am pretty sure you can do an evap bay test on that car. I recently had a stuck open purge valve on a 2010 Hyundai Elanatra. Replaced the valve with Duralast part. I could not get it to pass the bay test, Finally drove to dealer bought factory purge valve and it passed. The Autel Maxisys elite does the bay test.
I used to always use the flow meter on the smoke machine to tell me if there was a leak or not. However I had one vehicle with a leak so small, the ball dropped all the way to the bottom, but still had a very very small leak. I forget the vehicle, just something to keep in mind.
Hey Paul, my parents had a 2008 elantra, bought it brand new (was my first car!). Just last year it had the large evap leak code and 3 garages smoke tested it and they all said there's no leak. After changing purge and vent valves, and not being able to clear that code, just last week, they traded the car in at the dealer. Seems as though you're having the same issue... A "large leak" where there isn't even a small one. Hope it's nothing nefarious on Hyundai's part... That one simple code makes the car unpassable in many states, requiring you to buy another car. Looking forward to what you find as the cause!
I was told once that using air thru a smoke machine can be dangerous. I still do it because I don't have nitrogen. Just wondered what your thoughts are. I been using shop air for 10 years now.
Yep, I hate EVAP too! The only system on an automobile designed to bilk money out of the owner, and frustrate technicians into changing careers. As only a gov't-mandated system can! 😵 Nice one as always! FUNNY and informative! 👍🍻
This comment may be moot since you say no more evap leak tests. But I do maybe 10 evap leaks a month, for the past 5 years, and yes, almost every Hyundai doesn't "have a leak". I've found a couple tips over time. One, testing the system under a vacuum can better check a leaky cap. Done this by blocking vent valve, then engine running, back probe purge valve control side until max vacuum is shown on data pid, then unplug purge valve and quickly shutoff engine. Watch vacuum bleed-up rate. Also, something to note, a purge valve that fails to open, can set a large evap leak because the computer never sees system go into vacuum and translates that as there being a large leak.
There are two cam sensors. Question What if the year's cam sensor is fired or unemployed, will the car work? My car has two cam sands. One to feed and one for exhaust. I learned from you, the car only works with two signals. Cam sensitive and carnak sensor But I have two cam sensors. Will the car be affected if it's a exhaust cam sensor?
Try blowing air through the purge valve, should not be able to. Is it a BWD brand? I think Eric O. and Ivan call it broke when delivered. Sometimes when those stick open it can cause an extended crank time after refueling.
Have you ever tried to take the hose off of the the vent filter if its separate from the vent valve and smoke tested from there after you verify the vent valve operation?
Comes here to watch danner do a evap leak, instead watches nothing but RUclips commercials. Television never even had these many commercials... Holy commercials Batman! Damn
I changed the front and rear valve and gas cap and still check engine light turned on again same car turned on back again after driving it 40 miles after I reset code, what else could you think off brotha...? I'm like totally giving up on it
I bought a smoke tool as well and on my Acura I see the smoke co king out from the top of the tank so I’m going to have to figure out where it’s coming from and it’s weird I have no cel only the check fuel cap message.
@@ScannerDanner no not yet and I’m watching to learn of course and I’ve done a lot of other work but never evap checks. So for the vent that’s on the actual fuel tank not the canister right? My canister doesn’t leak anything but there’s a ton of smoke coming from the top so I will see if I can access the top via the rear seat or drop the tank. Thanks brother I appreciate the response. I know you hate evap leaks lol dang you guys filmed this during the initial Covid stay at home. I was essential at my job since I was a platoon sergeant but I thought that was funny when he said I’m essential.
@@E85_STI I have a Honda evap video that will help you. The vent valve will be near or on the canister and will have a hose that extends or dumps into the frame or possibly a filter. That is the fresh air inlet and that valve is normally open, so you have to electrically close it or pinch off that air inlet hose anytime your doing a smoke test. So all that smoke your seeing could be dumping out of the frame area from that vent

This is so funny and I bet the majority of people won't get it. The bevis and but head shot when you showed the small cut and drop of blood is from the episode where Beavis earned his redwings (look it up, urban dictionary). And all this talk about adult beverages.. lol. I'm not sure if it was intentional or not. Your son is a lot young to have watched the episode when it originally aired. The only thing that made them watchable back then was the anticipation of the shock content. Now that type of crap is mainstream it seems pretty horrible to watch.
As long as the system is proven sealed. You can test the system front any one location that's not at the purge location. Putting that wheel liner on after taking that off was a bit unproductive. Just a bit
Did it have a Bosch brand OE purge valve? I have replaced so many of those that leak, and now I've found that aftermarket replacement parts "work" but don't "work correctly."

"I'll never do another EVAP leak!" Words of wisdom from my mom many, many years ago, "Son, never say never".
Saludos Paul! No evap leak found! Advise your daughter in law fuel filler cap ALWAYS needs to be properly secured.
This is only one of many experiences where crap parts have made me consider going into the ministry! ;)
Everyday is ministry my brother. It is all in how we use it right?
Definitely felt your frustration on that story.
God bless
Yes, he did say that, BUT, the rules change when it comes to family. Remember, this is his son's fiance's car....
Yes, but I need the training. You have to keep teaching this info.
Hallo paul thanks for this video I'm in Mexico at this moment but when I get back I will get my 3, t-shirts V neck.
Paul, your in PA. Use your emissions machine to test the gas cap. It has a stand alone test for just the cap.
My brother said he doesn't trust it as 99.9% of gas caps pass
@@ScannerDanner fair enough
Paul you love the evap leaks......😊
Lots of fun to follow along Paul.
More to come! Craziest EVAP problem I've ever seen....

DANNER: "i'm essential"
Paul is thinking " no your special erg" lol
then kaleb says you have crap on your head just so you grab a greasy rag lol
"Im essential" sounds like Ralph from the Simpsons LOL
@@dro2204I laughed waaay to hard at that! Love it!
"Parts changer" lol
oddly, the older hyundai's I don't recall fixing a single evap leak, beyond a few gas caps that were worn out from highway mileage and many refills
I used to always use the flow meter on the smoke machine to tell me if there was a leak or not. However I had one vehicle with a leak so small, the ball dropped all the way to the bottom, but still had a very very small leak. I forget the vehicle, just something to keep in mind.
I have a feeling it’s a sticky NLVD solonoid issue. Run those uggas on that rim lol thanks for sharing Paul.
Your follower from Saudi Arabia 🥰🥰
My english bad🤥
I understand you! Thank you my friend
@@ScannerDanner you are welcome❤️❤️
Great Job Brotha as always!-FixItPhillip
Yep, I hate EVAP too! The only system on an automobile designed to bilk money out of the owner, and frustrate technicians into changing careers. As only a gov't-mandated system can! 😵
Nice one as always! FUNNY and informative! 👍🍻
I had this happen to me the new purge valve was stuck closed put a new oem one and it worked lol my kinda luck
Paul, you are such a funny individual 🤣🤣
Great video, very funny, Kaleb you’re doing a good Job
CVVT means Continously Variable Valve Timing. (Cam phaser)...
yeah, I figured that out in the edits, sorry about that
This comment may be moot since you say no more evap leak tests.
Also, something to note, a purge valve that fails to open, can set a large evap leak because the computer never sees system go into vacuum and translates that as there being a large leak.
looking forward to part 2!
There are two cam sensors.
Question
What if the year's cam sensor is fired or unemployed, will the car work?
My car has two cam sands.
One to feed and one for exhaust.
I learned from you, the car only works with two signals.
Cam sensitive and carnak sensor
But I have two cam sensors.
Will the car be affected if it's a exhaust cam sensor?
I hope my question is clear.
Use a Google translator to write 😞😞
Try blowing air through the purge valve, should not be able to. Is it a BWD brand? I think Eric O. and Ivan call it broke when delivered. Sometimes when those stick open it can cause an extended crank time after refueling.
I have this a thumb up after the guidance counselor comment haha
Have you ever tried to take the hose off of the the vent filter if its separate from the vent valve and smoke tested from there after you verify the vent valve operation?
TSB's, bad cap, intermittent vent valve, intermittent purge valve, cracked rubber hose (s).
buenas tardes saludos desde houston
The bleeps make it so much more realistic that you're fixing cars 😆
Comes here to watch danner do a evap leak, instead watches nothing but RUclips commercials. Television never even had these many commercials... Holy commercials Batman! Damn
Happy Father's day!
U did try your leave best
Thanks a lot Danner team =)
Sometimes I smoke through the vent if the car doesn't have a port or ill use my FPT 290 fuel pressure test kit to tap in somewhere
Greetings from Poland!
Couldn't you use the emissions testing machine to test the gas cap?
The frustration is real! 😂😂
Speaking of Gas Caps, every time I take mine off at the Gas Station it vents.
Is a vacuum in a fuel tank a problem?
As long as you're not having trouble filling the tank and you have no EVAP codes, I wouldn't worry about that.
I changed the front and rear valve and gas cap and still check engine light turned on again same car turned on back again after driving it 40 miles after I reset code, what else could you think off brotha...? I'm like totally giving up on it
I bought a smoke tool as well and on my Acura I see the smoke co king out from the top of the tank so I’m going to have to figure out where it’s coming from and it’s weird I have no cel only the check fuel cap message.
you have to make sure you block the Vent valve before smoke testing it. Did you do that?
Mr. Danner, learn one thing that from the point of marriage and on it just gets better, wife, kids, a beautiful home, and one day you look in the mirror and finout that you are starting to look like a father inlaw, and not so far away a promotion to be a grandfather, it happened to me, good luck and thanks for the video
Closer than you think for me my friend. Thank you and God bless you. Can't wait
thanks
This is fantastic
Yup hook to the purge line under hood
I learned you still dont like doing EVAP LEAKS TESTS hhahahaha great video buddy.
Lol evap leaks can be so tricky😏
UGGGGH!!!! EVAP leaks! STILL fighting mine on my truck!
Doesn't Danners emission machine have a gas cap tester Paul?
As long as the system is proven sealed. You can test the system front any one location that's not at the purge location. Putting that wheel liner on after taking that off was a bit unproductive. Just a bit
Did it have a Bosch brand OE purge valve? I have replaced so many of those that leak, and now I've found that aftermarket replacement parts "work" but don't "work correctly."
I cannot reply yet 😉
Evap systems make me so sad. I feel your pain.
Okay Professor no swearing.
Picked up some tips or maybe critiques, just kidding Professor.
Lock down, Ya mean for law abiding citizens but okay to go out and burn, loot, and protest. What a farce.
Okay I'll get off my soap box.
Good vid guys. Happy Motoring.
right? we can gather and loot and burn public and private property but can't bury our loved ones or be with them on their death beds
@@ScannerDanner Amen Brother. We need to call on our Father in heaven to bind the hands of evil people that would do harm to our great country.
thank for the video
1 thing i wont do (when dealing with a evap leak) is to disturb the fuel cap no matter what.
2004 5.3 Z71 a/c with avery thing replaced but computer & starter has periodic no start/ no crank but sometimes starts going backwards in start position & always starts after removing staer relay & jumping engine there. Crazy for this "I'll do it myselfer.??? What's up???
when it doesn't crank, do some voltage measurements at the starter and then go from there, no reason to speculate without those test being done first DURING the no crank situation
