The T wing shouldn't be used to try to outturn other fighters. It's basically the P-51 Mustang of Star Wars, designed to fly into and through enemy formations, tear them up, and then run out to distance before coming around to attack again.
Maybe more a p-38 Lightning maybe. As pretty sure the Xwing was meant to be the equivalent of a Mustang.. since it liked to act like one. Being something of ability to do a little of everything but slightly more suited towards dogfighting most enemy fighters
I liked the idea of the R-41 as a stopgap solution to a particular problem before the B-wing arrived. The X-wing is a superb fighter - but its one operational drawback is that without ion cannons, it can’t disable a shuttle or transport (without wrecking its engines). The Y-wing, on the other hand, has ion cannons, but is a lot slower than the X-wing, making interceptions of shuttles and transports difficult if they are fleeing at top speed. The R-41 has ion cannons, and is just as fast as the X-wing, making it ideal for interception and disabling of fast targets (so they can be boarded and captured by a friendly transport).
The R-41 and it's sister design, the R-42(two seat Starchaser variant) is a great design, and you're partially right about it being a stopgap. More accurately, it fits more of a police craft role better than the X- or Y-Wings. It's a capable fighter with the capacity to disable craft. Basically, this is the ship a planet's security force should have as their frontline, while planetary defense going to the aforementioned role specific craft. In addition, it would reduce the learning curve going from planetary security to planetary defense.
5:46 I can picture the phone call with the emperor Palpatine: *"Durable? High-Performance? Nah, lets have our brave Imperial-pilots fly around in unpressurised, unshielded metal balls with the pew-pew sticks on the front and a tiny little viewport so our mostly non-force sensitive pilots can only see forward and above."* Now I know why the Rebels won, they got F-22s while the Imperials bought replicas of the Spirit of St. Louis.
In Legends this may actually have been on purpose, because the Imperial Navy practiced a kind of institutional Darwinism. New pilots would fly basic TIE-L/Ns and as a result, most of them die, so you only have the best of them left. They get moved to flying either bombers or interceptors for their second tour of duty and again, most of them die, leaving only the best of those pilots. Third tour they are flying TIE Avengers and Missile-boats and at the end of that tour, you only have a tiny handful of pilots from the original class at the academy. These pilots, will be terrifyingly skilled and hardened survivors and killers, because they are only ones who could ever make it this far and so they get the very best, most elite ships like TIE Defenders and Scimitar Assault Bombers. Could the Rebel Allinace have ever gotten their hands on a Venator class Star Destroyer? Or did Palpatine really scrap them all? Seems like the perfect ship for a fighter heavy military that constantly needed to be on the move.
Yes, but also no. A single Venator could have housed half the starfighter corps of the Rebel Alliance - but it would have also taken about half of the Alliance to crew the (inefficiently-designed) behemoth. It would make for a pretty fragile - compared to an Imperial Star Destroyer - basket for a lot of eggs. One that would be a big target. Add in that most Rebel ships had hyperdrives of their own, and trying to get a Venator refueled would have been problematic, and the cost-benefit ratio is pretty weak.
