    No one ever seems to mention how broken the Defender Elite was. It was the fastest starship of all time, barring a few FO ships that… never displayed that speed, carried the toughest shields and firepower of any starfighter and many bombers, and was almost insanely user-friendly to fly.
    The thing is: I love that the reason it’s so good is because it’s A) built by the mastermind of all things, B) it costs more than some cruisers, and C) the assembly time is so long and complex that without a Grand Admiral pushing for it constantly and requiring Death Star appropriated funds: it collapsed almost instantly.

    Thank you for finally covering Dooku’s solar sailer! I had kind of clamored to have it included in your rare starships series. I have my doubts about the price tag you assigned to it, it was such a rare and exotic ship. The sail itself was practically a relic, ancient Gree technology. The ship was composed of rare metals, and fitted to suit Dooku’s refined tastes. It was meant to show Dooku’s eminence as CIS head of state.

    The problem with most of the follow-on TIE fighters was they didn't fit in the storage racks which seriously reduced how many could be carried on a Star Destroyer. Also, the lack of a hyperdrive and life support on TIE fighters was a way of preventing pilots from stealing one and defecting. The Empire didn't trust most of its pilots enough to put them alone in a craft capable of damaging the ship that carried it or able to reach somewhere habitable by itself.

    • @leosaffron222
      @leosaffron222 2 года назад +6

      Makes sense though. Historically, pilots have been relatively smart bastards and I feel like tie pilots are no exception, you see it in comics, legends etc. all the time. Fascists and authoritarian governments don’t like smart people working for them and even when they do they’re put on a short leash and kept under suspicion at all times. Erwin Rommels greatest enemy wasn’t the Allies he was fighting in the desert but German high command that employed him. Even Thrawn had to deal with imperial bureaucracy that limited his ability to effectively fuck up rebels despite his success. Checks out, fascists acting like fascists.

    I have 2 suggestions for you:
    The StarViper-class attack platform (Prince Xizor's starfighter) costing a whopping 160,000 credits and the Ginivex-class starfighter (Asaj Ventress's Fan shaped starfighter), only 6 were made so despite i haven't found any values i imagine it must be really expensive.

    • @tba113
      @tba113 2 года назад +4

      Xizor's StarViper was a really sweet ride. Given that it was designed completely from scratch, rather than being a custom mod or a new-model redesign of an existing ship, I'm more than a little surprised it isn't valued in the millions. Maybe the design team was worried Prince Xizor might think they were overcharging him, and only billed him for the parts. That, or the 160K-credit figure is the price tag for the downgraded mass-production model.

    • @thetragicallyhiphippo

      @@tba113 probably the downgraded model

  • @tba113
    @tba113 2 года назад +23

    Ah, good: I was hoping to see the TIE Defender on this list. An extraordinarily powerful machine with no compromises in performance, it was such a hotshot ride that Darth Vader himself felt they compared favorably to even his own custom-designed TIE Advanced x1.
    And they came with a price tag to match. At 300K credits per each, you could buy two TIE Defender fighters or three Arquitens-class light cruisers. Presumably, the Defenders' eye-watering unit price would drop once the fighter entered mass production, but during the R&D stage, they were so expensive that they threatened to push the Death Star project's deadline back by months or even years. For a sense of scale, the DS-1 was such a massive money pit that just scraping together enough material to build the outer hull disrupted metals markets _on a galactic scale._

    • @r2020E
      @r2020E 2 года назад +1

      um you can't buy three Arquitens for 300k. Looking it up an Arquitens is 4 million credits bro. I think you mean "two TIE advanced fighters" as well. A TIE Defender is not worth 2 TIE Defenders unless it has a value of 0 (simple algebra)

    • @NikoLavikainen

      The XG-1's descendent the Nova Wing would also do nicely, though it could be considered more of a bomber (or a "Missile Boat") than a fighter. And the operating costs would be insane. All those missiles can't be cheap to replace.

    I liked almost all of this, with one exception. Surely there's more to being classified as a starfighter than "being small". Wookiepedia even lists it as a sloop and yacht. In fact, an issue you identified, namely its slow acceleration, would exclude it from effective use as a starfighter, even if you replaced its tractor emitters with actual weapons.

    I would say a TIE defender is worth the cost of 300k credits. Even if deployed in low numbers, you could have some of your best pilots fly TIE defenders. Even a handful of TIE defenders (especially with your top pilots) would devastate enemy starfighters easily. For the empire, such a starfighter would be very good for countering the rebel alliance's starfighter based strategy. In addition, the rebel alliance was pretty short on personnel and losing large amounts of starfighter pilots would be crippling. The TIE defender being superior to any rebel alliance starfighter and the empire having far superior pilots (much more trained having formal training) would further this advantage.

    Personally I'd go with the GAT-12m Skipray Blastboat. A heavy starfighter, this variant came equipped with triple ion cannons, a dual 360° medium laser turret, proton torpedo launcher, and either a concussion missile launcher or a tractor beam projector. The m variant was faster in both real space and hyperspace, which put it between a X-wing and a TIE fighter in maneuverability, 3 times the armored hull of a X-wing, twice the shields of a X-wing, and a hyperspace class of more than likely 1.0. Add some sensor jamming equipment and you've got a mean starfighter. New this starfighter cost 285,000 credits.

Also it's just a tad larger than the Firespray-31 at the end of the list and just as heavily armed. Plus it's as fast as a starfighter, as maneuverable as a starfighter and can be carried on capital ships like a starfighter. It's on the large side for a starfighter but in Star Wars sometimes splitting hairs is just what you need to do to survive.

Being carried by a larger vessel doesn't make it a fighter, either, or else Lambda shuttles would also count. Another solid ship choice for an entrepreneur, btw.

      Me too. But it does explain why a lot of characters in Star Wars can afford to have their own ship.

    To fly around the Galaxy? Firespray
    To fly into combat? TIE/D Elite or TIE Silencer

    (Btw, I rather like what your lightsaber sponsor is putting out. They've got a nice selection of pretty simple and practical-looking stuff. :) Figured maybe they ought to know the sponsorship's worth it. :)

    No mention of the "Hell God King of Starfighters?" I mean, you can't fly the thing, but still...
    The Missile Boat is one of the best things to come out of the Imperial fighter designs...

    If I had the means all my bomber pilots would fly Deathravens, the double B Wing designed by mercenary pilot Erron Kell. All my interceptor pilots would fly Twi 'lek "Deathseed" starfighters, redesigned with TIE Defenders being the base instead of the standard TIE, so they are faster and have projectile launchers. I would rename the "Deathraptors". Last but certainly not least, my standard fighter would be the "Deatheagles". These would be TIE Defenders that have been modified to have three laser cannons and three ion cannons as weapons, one of each on each of the three wings. Furthermore, the wings themselves would be fitted to a revolving collar so they would spin around the cockpit, giving the pilots optimal firing arcs for their weapons. I would have twelve squadrons of my "Deatheagle" and six each of my "Deathraptor" and "Deathraven" fighters in the Fighter Bay of my Assertor class Star Dreadnought "Lightbringer".

    Imagine someone using the Death Star as a starfighter?. Just with custom parts to make it actually move like a starfighter. Or lots and lots of force magic.

    Is being pre-Empire another factor in Din taking the N1? Something about the transponder or registration?

    • @spiderboy43
      @spiderboy43 2 года назад +2

      Yup. Pre-Empire ships don't have transponders that give away your registration, which the Empire was very big on to maintain control in the galaxy.

    Personally I realy think the tie phantom should be on this list granted im not sure if this is a cannon only list but regardless it's personally my fav starfighter and is like the tie defender probably one of the best starfighters ever made.

    You should also consider inflation...Chances are 200k credits in any economy would not be equal to 200k credits 100 - 1000 years later.
